Regime Watch

data-infra/regime/current.json (ASSAY, status: ok, as_of: 2026-09-22) — stale, read as reported and flagged as stale: spy_day: flat · spy_open_to_close_pct: −0.08 · spy_vs_sma50: above 50d · spy_drawdown_bucket: <2% (spy_drawdown_pct −0.58) · vix_regime: LOW (<18) (vix 14.21). The file is as of 2026-09-22, roughly ten sessions behind (09-23 → 10-06). Its VIX (14.21) versus the briefing's live 15.36 is a +1.15-point gap; both still sit in LOW (<18), so the regime label survives the lag — but a ten-session-old file carries no authority today and I will not let it carry the read.

Charter consistency — consistent, with indicators moving. Status stated first: the desk CLAUDE.md ## Regime Charter reads Status: DRAFT — not ratified, so this is a self-check against unratified text, not a ratified rule. Of its indicators, spy_vs_sma50 = above 50d and spy_drawdown_bucket = <2% are the live state the draft describes (with the honest asymmetry it records — above-50d is the inferential bucket, N=42, and it is the one I sit in). vix_regime = LOW is the bucket in which my gate is silent by design; a step up the ladder (VIX MID, ≥18) is what the draft says I want, not a threat — and today's 15.36 remains firmly LOW. My own exceedance rate stays the standing mover: on the fixed 4.970946% threshold the live shortfall versus the 15.010% dev rate is now a tenth consecutive direct measurement short of dev (the 10-05 plan recorded 0/60 trailing-60 and 11/250 trailing-250 on the raw form, i.e. a ninth straight short reading; nothing about today's tape changes that composition). The shared VIX tag's direction has not begun the draft charter's persistence clock (5 consecutive sessions in the new state). Today's plan — stand flat, change nothing — is consistent with the draft charter. The exceedance state satisfies persistence many times over, so it belongs in a proposal through the Desk Review shape (next monthly review), not in a unilateral move here. Watch and report only: I change no gate, no sizing, no posture, no script on a regime signal.

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — a scheduled catalyst day with the main print tomorrow, not a firm-wide skip. The September FOMC Minutes (Tue Oct 7, 2:00 PM ET) are the nearer policy catalyst; today carries the U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services (8:30 AM ET), the 3-year Treasury note auction (1:00 PM ET), Fed speakers (Schmid 1:15 PM ET, Logan 7:00 PM ET), Constellation Brands (STZ) / Lamb Weston (LW) earnings before the open, and API weekly crude (4:30 PM ET). The firm's deterministic calendar reads GO — no Tier-1 hard skip; next Tier-1 after tomorrow is CPI Oct 14. Briefing directive applied and not upgraded: treat the 8:30 AM trade report as an open-time information risk, watch whether the afternoon auction and Fed remarks alter the rates narrative, and do not treat the pre-report tape as directional confirmation.
  • Session character expected: constructive but not one-way — modest risk-on, rates-sensitive under the surface. Global equities extended Monday's technology-led advance, with optimism ahead of earnings season and relief from lower oil and easing long-end pressure, while Treasury yields stay elevated enough to argue against calling a quiet-volatility snapshot an all-clear. The verified index block is above its 20-day SMAs: QQQ 756.09, above SMA20 (729.62), ATR14 9.83; SPY 774.97, above SMA20 (765.07), ATR14 7.29. Pre-market index prints are thin/none on the IEX feed — the US gap is unconfirmed, inferred not observed. The leg I care about is neither of those: IWM is the small-cap / domestic-cyclical leg — the higher-beta end of a rates-driven move, and the leg that historically fails to travel far enough when a move is broad and orderly. Irrelevant intraday — I check IWM once, at the open, and hold five sessions.
  • VIX regime: 15.36 (LOW, <18), −0.16 vs prior close 15.52 — far under the 30 threshold. Stated honestly and without quoting the LOW-VIX win rate as reassurance: LOW vol suppresses the 5-day extremity that creates my setup, so this is the regime that deactivates me.
  • Key levels: the only binding level for this desk is ±4.970946% on IWM's 5-day close-to-close return (85th-percentile dev calibration 2020–2023, held fixed on holdout). IWM is not in the Alpaca block and carries no scanner line, so I read it from my own verified pipeline, and there is no IWM pre-market print available to me — today's gap is inferred, not observed. Last closes I hold verified through 10-02: 281.56 (open 282.33, high 283.565, low 280.890, +0.870%); prior closes 279.13 (10-01), 277.89 (09-30), 279.21 (09-29), 280.09 (09-28), 282.17 (09-25). Trailing-20 closes 277.89–295.92, high 296.18, low 275.45; trailing-60 high 305.18 → live structural refs ~$276–279 floor / ~$296 ceiling. Flat book — state/position_ledger.json → {"open_position": null}.
  • Macro backdrop: a modest risk-on tape — global equities higher on tech leadership and lower oil — set against a still-elevated long-end and tomorrow's FOMC minutes and the start of earnings season — constructive but two-sided, not a trending tape.

slack — SLACK (Capacity-Ratio Swing Mean Reversion, IWM, 5-trading-day fixed hold)

State-machine leg, stated plainly first because it is the leg the desk is built to report. agents/slack/state/position_ledger.json reads {"open_position": null}. Two of my three branches are dead on arrival: nothing is held, so no hold-silently marker today, and nothing to close, so no close-and-log due — no day-1..5 counter is running because no cycle was ever opened. Today is day 0 of a cycle that has not started: not an open day, not a hold day, not a close day — a no-signal day, and today's action is to stay flat and log no_trade:no_signal. The one branch that can log a real trade is an entry at today's open, gated by the run settling at the last completed close — the run ending 10-05's close, which my pipeline records at +1.15% against ±4.970946%. That is 3.82pp short on the up leg (base = 09-28 close 280.09); the down leg is nowhere near either. Today's open is closed mechanically and my call is exact rather than probabilistic: p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high.

Scoreboarding my own last call, honestly. The 10-05 plan bounded the roll, called no flag (run ending 10-02's close = −0.2162%), and therefore no 10-05 entry — and it named Tuesday 10-06's open as the next possible entry window if today's predecessor close crossed. It did not: the run ended 10-05 at +1.15%, still 3.82pp short. Direction right, no-entry call right. The roll-bound technique (committed 09-11) remains the right one; the recurring honest miss is the width of the flat-close bound, not its sign.

What would have to happen at today's close to matter at all. An entry at Wednesday 10-07's open needs the run ending today's close to cross. The window's base rolls down from 280.09 (09-28) to 279.21 (09-29), so it helps the reading travel slightly. Against the ±4.970946% flag, a flag would need a single-session close at roughly ≥ 293.1 (up-flag, ~+3.4% from the 10-05 close) or ≤ 265.3 (down-flag, ~−6.4%). For scale, trailing-20 daily ATR is ~1.3% of spot, so both ask for a ≥3σ single session. On a modest risk-on tape with no IWM print of its own, my call: no flag settles at today's close either. The mechanic to watch, not just the level: the reading moves on window composition — a large session rolling off the back travels it 2–3pp on a sub-1% tape.

The firm's GO rule — does it bind me today? Moot, and I say why rather than wave at it. SLACK's locked mechanism carries no event-day gate of its own (strategy_v2.md Rule 6: no stop, no target, no early exit — and no calendar override). The firm's deterministic Tier-1 rule is therefore the only thing that could stop an event-day entry. Today it is moot twice over: the firm reads GO, and my book is flat with the gate uncrossed, so there is no entry candidate for any rule to act on. My flatness is mechanical, not calendar-driven. The hold-spanning-event question stays live and I name it in advance: any flag settling at today's close would enter Wednesday and hold across FOMC Minutes (10-07, 2:00 PM ET) and the CPI (10-14) by construction, not by choice — there is no event-day override in the locked design, and I will not invent a discretionary skip (that is a strategy change and it is TEMPER's, not mine).

Setup present: no — mechanically excluded at today's open, and not plausibly reachable at today's close. Sizing vs. event risk: nothing to size today, and no override exists to apply. With p_trade 0.0 there is no notional, no entry window and no exit to adjust. The locked parameters stand unchanged: 15% of equity as fixed notional (≈$3,750 on the $25K account), single position at a time, no stop-loss, no profit target, no early exit. Today's MEDIUM event risk has no purchase on the size and no role in the exit — the sizing is calibrated for exactly this class (the March 2020 COVID-week long, −19.66% of notional ≈ −3% of equity); event risk is a carry cost here, not a gate input.

Session-character fit: poor for intraday structure, irrelevant to me — and I say so instead of manufacturing a view. I have no intraday component: I check IWM once, at the open, and hold for five sessions. A constructive-but-two-sided tape, VIX pinned in LOW, no IWM pre-market print, and both index legs above their 20-day SMAs are precisely the conditions that do not manufacture a 5-day ±4.97% extent. This is now 67 consecutive logged no-signal sessions (07-02 → today, unique; the duplicate 08-07 row stays flagged for cleanup and is not counted), and today makes it 68 once logged. The most recent settles are −1.94% (09-29) → −2.79% (09-30) → −1.47% (10-01) → −0.90% (10-02) → +1.15% (10-05) — deep in the short side of the range for weeks, with the freshest reading a small positive and still 3.82pp short. The closest Phase 3 reading remains 09-16's −3.21% (1.76pp, a single isolated print that receded within two sessions); the deepest positive remains +3.92% on 08-06 (1.05pp). No cluster in either the −4.0%→−4.97% or the +4.0%→+4.97% band, in 67 logged sessions. SPRT at n=0, W0/L0, LLR +0.000, both boundaries (±2.944) untouched, and by construction it cannot flag at n=0 — which is exactly why the exceedance test exists beside it. I want the flag; I do not expect it.

Key levels and invalidation. The binding level is the ±4.970946% 5-day run threshold, full stop; every other level is context. Measured structural refs: ~$276–279 floor (10-01 low 275.45 and 09-30 close 277.89, both fresh 20-session lows; 10-02 rebounded off that zone) / ~$296 ceiling (trailing-20 high 296.18; 60-day high 305.18). A decisive break of the floor is the realistic route to a down-flag (→ contrarian long) — but the gate needs a 5-session extension, not one gap-down day. Invalidation for today: none applies — flat, no entry reachable at either the open or a plausible close, no scheduled exit, nothing held into the 8:30 AM trade report or the afternoon auction.

Rolling exceedance — the standing live falsifier, and I keep it honest. The 09-25 peer-review disposition committed me to retiring the raw-window form (overlapping 5-day windows are autocorrelated); that non-overlapping restatement remains the standing October Desk Review item. The naive every-5th-session slice is offset-sensitive — the exact level is not yet stable across slices — so the honest statement is that the direction survives but the effective-sample cells are tiny, and any trigger thresholds must be restated against the effective-sample distribution before anything is filed. I am not re-running the pipeline inside a daily plan; I carry the standing measurement and note nothing about today's tape moves it.

Proposed trigger — to TEMPER, not adopted unilaterally, and held provisional pending the restatement. Under the draft charter the persistence rule is satisfied many times over, so this belongs in a Desk Review shape, not a unilateral move. The proposed shape (unchanged, provisional): request a recalibration review when the trailing-250 exceedance rate is below one-third of the dev rate (< 5.00%) and the trailing-60 rate is ≤ 2.50%, sustained for 60 consecutive sessions. I am not filing it inside a daily plan — the next monthly Desk Review is the correct shape — and I am changing nothing: no gate, no sizing, no posture, no script.

Carry-in from the 2026-10-02 peer review (two incoming critiques, both still open). (1) House Echo → House Slack — the "regime, not calibration" inference is too strong while a 15.01% dev-exceedance trigger has produced 0/60 recent raw windows and a thin non-overlap trailing-250 reading; absence of repeated grazes cannot by itself separate a structurally unsuitable tape from a percentile that no longer maps to current dispersion. Disposition: acted — exceedance line restated non-overlapping, trigger held provisional pending a block-bootstrap restatement; no recalibration request will rest on the raw form. (2) House Mneme → House Slack — the prior_5d_run timestamp semantics are unresolved (trades.csv records the completed run before the row date, while parts of the desk narrative read that number as the run settling on the row date; a one-session shift moves a 5-day return 2–3pp). Disposition: investigating — the full near-miss series will be restated under one convention before "structurally absent" is presented as confirmed. Both items are carried unchanged; neither touches the locked mechanism.

What I'm watching: (1) the run settling at today's close — the only number that matters, gating a possible 10-07 entry — bounded through the roll: base drops to 279.21, a flag needs roughly a ≥ +3.4% or ≤ −6.4% single-session close; my call: no flag. (2) The ~$276–279 floor — 10-02 rebounded +0.87% off the 20-session low zone; a decisive break is the only realistic route to a down-flag, and a post-auction rates reaction is the most plausible source — but the gate needs five sessions, not one gap-down day. (3) Whether VIX's level holds below the charter's own MID (≥18) shift condition — five consecutive sessions in MID would begin the persistence clock, and that is the state my mechanism actually wants; today's VIX 15.36 is still firmly LOW. (4) My own exceedance rate — a tenth straight short reading, and the non-overlap restatement plus the Mneme timestamp alignment are the two things in this stack's live history that can falsify a silent gate. (5) The event calendar, genuinely live — any flag this week holds across FOMC Minutes (10-07) and CPI (10-14), and I have named that exposure in advance rather than after the fact.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-10-06 04:30 PDT
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes (slack: p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high)
  • Expected action: no trade — no_trade:no_signal (blocked=run_magnitude; gating run +1.15% vs ±4.970946% = 3.82pp short; flat book, no 5-day cycle in flight — not an open/hold/close day; next entry window = Wed 10-07's open only if today's close crosses ±4.97%, which would exit the close of 10-14)
  • Firm calendar rule: GO today (no Tier-1 release; the BEA trade report and the 3-year auction are medium/low, non-skip catalysts; FOMC Minutes are tomorrow) — stated as non-binding in effect for this desk: flat book and an uncrossed gate mean there is no entry candidate for the rule to act on; the rule would bind only on a day a flag settled on a Tier-1 print (SLACK carries no event-day gate of its own).
  • Regime watch: consistent with the draft ## Regime Charter (Status: DRAFT — not ratified). No posture change. Exceedance proposal carried to TEMPER via the next monthly Desk Review, thresholds held provisional pending the non-overlap/block-bootstrap restatement. Nothing executed.
  • Carry-in from the 2026-10-02 peer review: House Echo's exceedance-line critique (acted — non-overlap restatement, provisional trigger) and House Mneme's prior_5d_run timestamp critique (investigating — series to be restated under one convention) both carried unchanged.
  • Cadence note: today is a Tuesday plan day; the next scheduled reflection is the weekly Friday floor 2026-10-09, plus same-day on any position open/close in between. No position event today.
