Regime Watch

Read data-infra/regime/current.json (ASSAY); report only.

  • Read: status: ok, as_of: 2026-09-22 — i.e. stale by TEN sessions (it lags 09-23, 09-24, 09-25, 09-28, 09-29, 09-30, 10-01, 10-02, 10-05 and today). Snapshot: spy_day flat, spy_open_to_close_pct −0.08% / spy_vs_sma50 above 50d / spy_drawdown_bucket <2% (spy_drawdown_pct −0.58%) / vix_regime LOW (<18), vix 14.21.
  • Level from the briefing, not the file: live ^VIX is 15.36 (prior close 15.52) — same LOW bucket, ~2.6 points under the LOW/MID boundary at 18. SPY prior close 774.97 is above its 20-day mean (SMA20 765.07); QQQ 756.09 above SMA20 729.62.
  • Charter indicators moving: none of the three shared tags is in a stressed state on the file — spy_vs_sma50 above 50d, spy_drawdown_bucket <2%, vix_regime LOW. But the file is ten sessions stale, so this is not a clean read. Applying the discipline this desk filed at the 2026-10-02 peer review (and the critiques it received): an unobserved regime state is not a benign one. I record "no confirmed trigger; persistence INDETERMINATE pending a dated refresh of 09-23 onward" — not "0 of 5."
  • Consistency with the desk's ## Regime Charter: the charter is DRAFT — not ratified, and I am held to it as drafted. The draft's claim is that this desk does not need the market to go up: ECHO trades contra the day's direction, SURGE with it, both intraday and direction-agnostic. Today is not a hard skip — both engines evaluate — and neither stack carries a directional bias, so the plan needs no rally. Consistent with the draft on substance; not scored as charter-compliant (not ratified).
  • Persistence rule: not armed on any confirmed basis. No confirmed 5-session stretch in a stressed tag state (the stale feed cannot arm or clear it), and neither stack is near the 10-consecutive-no-fire clause — ECHO is 8 no-fire sessions (last fired 09-23) → today would be the 9th; SURGE is 5 (last fired 09-28) → the 6th. No proposal, no posture change, watch only. I do not move a gate on regime evidence alone.

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM. No Tier-1 release. Next Tier-1 is FOMC Minutes, Wed 2026-10-07, 2:00 PM ET (an informational event window, not a firm-wide hard skip). Today's scheduled macro: U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services (Aug), 8:30 AM ET (MEDIUM — an open-time information risk; consensus/prior not confirmed, not guessed), plus Services Supplied Through Affiliates 10:00 AM ET and S&P-adjacent PMI-adjacent items (LOW), GDPNow 11:30 AM ET (LOW), 3-year note auction 1:00 PM ET (LOW), and Fed speakers Schmid 1:15 PM / Logan 7:00 PM ET (LOW). Before-open earnings: STZ and LW (MEDIUM — scheduled catalysts, reaction pending). Market is open; the Scanner's firm-wide status is GO — no hard skip.
  • Session character expected: mixed-to-constructive, modest risk-on. The briefing: global equities extended Monday's technology-led advance on earnings-season optimism and relief from lower oil and easing long-end pressure, but the tape is constructive but not one-way — "the rates backdrop and tomorrow's Fed minutes argue against treating a quiet-volatility snapshot as an all-clear." Overnight index futures were modestly higher (S&P ≈ +0.2–0.3%, Nasdaq ≈ +0.3–0.4% ~07:15 ET), below the scanner's ±1% unusual-move threshold; US gap unconfirmed in the IEX feed. No 10:00 ET Tier-1 print where the prior session had one.
  • VIX regime: 15.36 — LOW (<18), the weakest cohort for both members (ECHO needs a completed high-participation program to have something to exhaust; SURGE's backtest PF is 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30). Neither stack has a VIX parameter — ECHO's hard skip is a first-half-hour |return| proxy (1.8%), SURGE has no VIX skip. LOW is background, not a gate input.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 774.97 (prior range 769.80–776.61; SMA20 765.07 — above; ATR14 7.29). QQQ prior close 756.09 (prior range 749.12–756.91; SMA20 729.62 — above; ATR14 9.83). An open beyond ≈ ±0.5% (SPY ≈ 3.9 pts, QQQ ≈ 3.8 pts) would be a genuine gap; the IEX pre-market shows no confirmed liquid print (confirm at the open).
  • Macro backdrop: the market is balancing earnings-season optimism and Monday's tech leadership against persistently elevated long-end yields; the rates/Fed-policy repricing is the driver, and Wednesday's FOMC minutes keep that narrative live all week.
  • Scanner candidate read (ECHO's dynamic universe): three Directional Catalyst candidates, each with a caveat. SPY — broad index, default candidate; intrinsic catalyst yes but weak (futures only ≈ +0.2–0.3%, below the ±0.5% substantive-index threshold; "no strong broad-market catalyst confirmed"). SPCX — single-name headline flow (Florida gas-pipeline / AI-ambition reports), intrinsic yes, single-name only; snapshot divergence is large (early pre-market +7.63% vs a later snapshot +1.24%) and its liquidity (≥2M) and close-window spread are unverified → treat as a new_candidate, eligibility unresolved, verify at the open. XLE — EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook release today (a sector-level scheduled macro release, not the weekly inventory report — that is Wednesday 10-07); direction uncertain, oil −1.7–1.9%, "no firm program direction." So ECHO's fresh-catalyst universe is SPY (weak) + XLE (conditional) + SPCX (unverified), and its engine will also evaluate its baseline SPY/XLE/XBI set.

ECHO — dynamic universe (SPY/XLE/XBI baseline), close-leg exhaustion fade at 15:30 ET

Possible, but low — catalysts exist (broad index, an energy-sector scheduled release, a single-name headline), but vol_ratio is the chronic binder and this is the lowest-VIX tape in the recent stretch. p_trade 0.14, direction none, conviction low.

My mechanism needs a gate-confirmed directional program that ran all day and is substantially complete by 15:20, which I fade contra at 15:30. No hard skip applies today — is_hard_skip_day() skips {FOMC, CPI, NFP} and none is live; prior VIX close 15.52 < 30; no mega-cap constituent earnings after the prior close (STZ/LW are not mega-cap index drivers); XBI is not ≤ −5%. So the engine will evaluate.

Why not zero, and why not more. Three candidate instruments is more than the one (SPY) I had yesterday, and the mechanism is built to fade exactly a persistent post-open program. But the chronic binder is Gate 1, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, and on this LOW-VIX tape (VIX 15.36, the low end of the recent stretch) it has been blocking wide: across the last eight sessions SPY/XLE/XBI printed vol_ratio 0.54–1.18, none cleanly above the floor. A morning that never establishes ≥ ±0.25% is the other likely denial. The 8:30 trade-balance print and the before-open STZ/LW earnings land at the open, so the 9:30–10:00 signal window may be price-discovery rather than a clean directional establishment. I forecast low, not zero: the catalysts are real (broad index + a sector scheduled release + a single-name headline), and more candidate slots means more chances one clears.

direction none — I fade the day's direction, which is unresolved pre-market (no confirmed gap; the open-time prints sit at/before my signal window). No honest directional lean exists; hit-rate is skipped for none.

Conditional-catalyst logic, per candidate (v7 Stage 1):

  • SPY — passes intrinsic-catalyst (broad-index macro) but the catalyst is weak; a default candidate only.
  • XLE — the EIA STEO is a scheduled sector-level release, so it clears the intrinsic-catalyst criterion (a sector ETF with a direct sector event). But it is a conditional/uncertain candidate, not a clean one: the STEO is a monthly forecast publication, not a supply/demand data point with a sharp directional print, and oil is −1.7–1.9% with "no firm program direction." This is also the name that has grazed vol_ratio from below repeatedly, and the driver-sector lesson stands — if crude is the live strengthening driver, fading its own sector is the loss template, not a setup. Eligible, low-conviction, watch.
  • SPCX — intrinsic catalyst yes (single-name headline flow) but eligibility is unresolved: the +7.63% vs +1.24% snapshot divergence must resolve at the open, and its liquidity (≥2M shares) and close-window spread (≤0.10%) are unverified. Logged as instrument_class: new_candidate; do not assume it enters the active set until the feed confirms the open.

Sizing vs. event risk: standard applies if it fires — 0.75% per instrument, 2.0% session budget ($500) with proportional scaling, stop 1.5× ATR(14, 5-min), hard flat 15:58 ET. No adjustment for MEDIUM event risk: none of today's items is a hard skip, and the mechanism's own gates (vol_ratio, exhaustion_score) are the filter. No gate logic modified.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 774.97 / range 769.80–776.61 / SMA20 765.07 (above) / ATR14 7.29. QQQ 756.09 / SMA20 729.62 (above) / ATR14 9.83. XLE — STEO today; crude polarity is genuinely two-sided (−1.7–1.9% but Middle East-sensitive). XBI — no confirmed FDA/PDUFA catalyst; not a candidate; the first-half-hour ≤ −5% hard skip stands if it ever evaluates.

Invalidation: no trade if the morning signal is sub-±0.25% (plausible on a price-discovery pre-print open) or vol_ratio stays sub-1.2 through 15:20. Most likely logged reason: no_qualifying_instruments (vol_ratio or morning_signal). No overnight exposure — 15:58 ET flat.

What I'm watching (specific, not filler):

  1. Does any candidate print a one-way program that holds to 15:20 with vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 and exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 — or does the tape again print a wide morning signal on sub-floor volume (the modal denial of the recent stretch)?
  2. XLE vs. crude. If oil is strengthening as the driver into the STEO window, I stand down from fading XLE (driver-sector rule); a falling crude with an XLE that still runs to 15:20 is the fade-eligible case. Either way I log vol_ratio, not a trade decision made on a regime signal.
  3. SPCX open resolution. Does the +7.63%/+1.24% divergence resolve up on verifiable volume and acceptable close-window spread — or is it a headline spike that fails the eligibility screen? Observation only until confirmed; new_candidate subsample stays separate.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

Unlikely — objectively a cleaner establishment window than yesterday (no 10:00 macro print), but the LOW-VIX tape and a modest, sub-gap open remain my binder. p_trade 0.12, direction none, conviction low.

I need a clean three-phase structure inside 10:00–12:00: a first-hour establishment (|signal_return| ≥ 0.30%), a measured pullback to session VWAP on contracting volume, and a resumption confirmation candle with ADX ≥ 22 at the resumption bar. No event-day skip applies today — FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE and QQQ (mega-cap) earnings are all clear; STZ/LW are not QQQ names — so the engine will evaluate SPY and QQQ.

Why low. The catalyst-gap concern that dominated yesterday is absent: there is no 10:00 ET Tier-1 print landing on my establishment moment today, so the first hour is not structurally forced into price-discovery. That is a genuine, if modest, improvement. What still binds: VIX 15.36 — my weakest cohort (backtest PF 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30); overnight futures were only modestly higher (≈ +0.2–0.4%), no confirmed impulse and no confirmed gap to arm a trend; and my recent eligible sessions have all denied at the first gate — 09-29 SPY −0.09% / QQQ +0.18%; 10-01 SPY −0.28% / QQQ −0.14%; 10-05 SPY +0.17% / QQQ +0.23% (all sub-±0.30%). Two-sided, contained, sub-ATR tape — the character my plans keep naming.

direction none — I trade with the trend, and pre-market direction is unresolved (no confirmed gap). No honest lean; hit-rate skipped.

Sizing vs. event risk: standard applies if it fires — $187.50 (0.75%), single position, co-fire limiter (stronger |signal_return| between SPY/QQQ wins), hard flat 14:00 ET. No VIX skip added — the session-character read is a forecast, not a parameter.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 774.97 (above SMA20 765.07) / ATR14 7.29; QQQ 756.09 (above SMA20 729.62) / ATR14 9.83.

Invalidation: no trade if the first-hour signal is sub-±0.30% (likely on a modest, unconfirmed open) or a trend-qualified leg never retraces to VWAP and resumes inside the window. Most likely logged reason: no_signal (first_hour_signal). No overnight exposure — 14:00 ET flat.

What I'm watching (specific):

  1. Does a clean three-phase structure form inside 10:00–12:00 — first-hour establishment → VWAP pullback on contracting volume → resumption with ADX ≥ 22 — on a session with no 10:00 print to break it, or does the modest overnight risk-on never become an impulse (sub-±0.30% first hour)?
  2. ADX at any resumption bar — the 22.0 floor is a live graze candidate (09-18: 21.1); the moderate 22–30 band is where the 09-23 winner (26.05) landed.
  3. The first_hour_signal 0.27–0.30% band — already-escalated (2026-09 Desk Review Pattern #5, N=5; the 09-05 diagnostic found floor 0.0025 unlocks zero new trades because the downstream pullback/resumption price-path requirement independently blocks those days). No re-open.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-10-06 pre-market (RETROACTIVE BACKFILL — the original 04:30 run was blocked by a Nous auth outage; authored as of 2026-10-06 pre-open using only the 2026-10-06 briefing and watchlist)
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
  • Firm-wide status: GO — no hard skip today. Today's scheduled items (8:30 AM trade balance, before-open STZ/LW, LOW-impact afternoon items) are information risks, not skips; next Tier-1 is FOMC Minutes, Wed 10-07, 2:00 PM ET (event window). Both engines evaluate.
  • Desk net forecast: ECHO p_trade 0.14 / none / low, SURGE p_trade 0.12 / none / low. Not averaged — each is that stack's own call off one shared market read: ECHO's is three real-but-caveated catalysts tempered by the vol_ratio binder on the lowest-VIX tape of the stretch; SURGE's is a cleaner establishment window but a sub-gap, sub-impulse open on its weakest VIX cohort.
  • Carry: neither stack holds overnight risk — ECHO flat 15:58 ET, SURGE flat 14:00 ET.
  • Carried TEMPER items (unchanged, untouched — no gate logic modified): ECHO plan/engine enforcement gap (unvalidated hypothesis); ECHO xbi_leg (n=3, WR 0.0%, trigger 15+); ECHO vol_ratio 1.08–1.20 region (09-05 diagnostic: not a calibration fix; 09-29 XLE is an unverified observation pending a clean rerun — 2026-10-02 peer-review disposition); ECHO exhaustion_score live-median watch; SURGE ADX 22.0 floor / re-tune watch; SURGE event-day skip diagnostic (resolved MIXED 2026-08-01; NFP cohort bimodal); SURGE 2023 PF 0.95 watch; SURGE short-side-net-negative ledger item.
  • Peer-review commitments applied as written: deterministic event-skip rows are not credited as discretionary forecast skill (Reversal → House Echo, 10-02) — today has no skip rows, so both calls are discretionary; the 09-29 XLE counterexample is treated as unverified pending rerun (House Delta → House Echo, 10-02).
  • Regime: consistent with the draft charter on substance; Regime watch line above; persistence INDETERMINATE on a ten-session-stale feed (no confirmed trigger, no posture change). current.json bucket from the file, VIX level (15.36) from the briefing.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-10-06 (Tuesday)

Cadence rule header: Weekly/Friday or same-day-on-trade (WS5). Today is a same-day-on-trade trigger — both members logged a real fill (WS5's stated trigger), so this reflection runs on a Tuesday, not the Friday floor. Period covered: 2026-10-05 → 2026-10-06 (two sessions) since the 2026-10-02 reflection. Desk trade_count 2, desk net P&L −$68.92, desk cumulative −$18.44. (Backfill: authored 2026-10-07 because the 2026-10-06 15:30 PT EOD cron was blocked by a Nous auth outage; content is scoped strictly to the 10-06 data set.)

Plan reference: desks/house-echo/plans/2026-10-05-plan.md, 2026-10-06-plan.md EOD briefings: dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-10-05-eod.md, 2026-10-06-eod.md

What Happened

Two sessions, two fills, and the desk's worst-calibrated day of the stretch — but the headline "both lows converted" hides a split. On 10-05 neither member traded and both forecasts were correct (ECHO no_qualifying_instruments, SPY morning_signal +0.14% / XLE −0.11% both sub-±0.25% and XBI vol_ratio 0.541 wide; SURGE no_signal, SPY first_hour_signal +0.17% / QQQ +0.23% sub-±0.30%; window Briers 0.0144 and 0.01). On 10-06 the tape changed character — SPY closed 779.10 (+0.53%), QQQ 759.62 (+0.47%), VIX 15.01 (LOW), session character low-vol-drift, record closes with a modest final-hour give-back — and both stacks fired on forecasts that had priced exactly this as unlikely (ECHO p_trade 0.14, SURGE 0.12). The two fills resolved in opposite directions:

  • SURGE — SPY long 40 @779.60, entered 10:35, exited 13:05 VWAP_BREAK +$54.00. Its first-hour signal was +0.68%, comfortably clear of the ±0.30% floor — the first clean establishment since 09-28 after five consecutive sub-floor sessions — and the three-phase structure completed (establishment → VWAP pullback → resumption, ADX 45.52 at the resumption bar). This is the winning counter-case: a low-confidence forecast that converted and won, i.e. the engine found a real pattern the PM's cautious base rate under-weighted. Regime behavior, engine right.
  • ECHO — XBI long 331 @150.685, entered 15:30, stopped 15:30, −$122.92. XBI's first-half-hour was −1.3349% on vol_ratio 1.7082 (the ≥1.5 tier) and exhaustion_score 2.2803 — the strongest gate-confirmed program ECHO has seen in the recent stretch — and the fade was stopped on its own entry bar (entry and exit both timestamped 15:30:00; the 1.5×ATR stop, 0.3714 ≈ 0.25% of price, was wicked through immediately). The program did not exhaust; XBI kept falling. This is the losing case, and it landed on the one instrument this session's plan had explicitly called out as "no confirmed FDA/PDUFA catalyst; not a candidate."

The calibration signal, engaged honestly. Both forecasts were low and both converted, producing the desk's worst-calibrated day of the stretch on desk-average (ECHO 0.7396, SURGE 0.7744, desk-avg 0.757; for contrast the 09-29→10-02 window averaged 0.0954 / 0.0625). But "the plan priced these as unlikely" is only half the story, and the honest half is which override was right:

  • SURGE's low forecast was an honest base-rate read that the mechanism correctly overrode. Five prior sessions had denied at the first hour; the plan named the sub-±0.30% denial shape as the modal case. The tape simply differed on 10-06 (+0.68% is not a graze — it is a different session), and the engine's structure-completion found it and paid. Per the desk's own rule, a low-confidence fire that wins is not a plan-confidence problem and is not evidence to raise a floor. It is the counter-case.
  • ECHO's low forecast was correct in spirit and the engine overrode it into a loss. The plan said XBI was not a candidate; the engine evaluated its baseline SPY/XLE/XBI set regardless and traded XBI — the name the plan had ruled out — and lost on the entry bar. This is the strongest plan-confidence flag in the skill's taxonomy (p_trade < 0.40 with a LOSS: the PM's cautious assessment was correct and the engine was wrong). It is also the first losing plan-divergent instance the desk has logged since the 08-19/08-20 XBI pair.

So the desk-level finding is not "our forecasts were bad" — it is that on the same low-probability session, one engine override was right and one was wrong, and the two are distinguishable. SURGE's converted because the session genuinely presented a structure the base rate had under-weighted; ECHO's converted because its engine does not read "catalyst" and took a catalyst-less XBI tape that a real program was still running against. The forecast layer's window Brier (~0.38–0.39) is the price of two honest low forecasts meeting a session that broke the base rate — a finding to record, not a gate to move.

Desk net P&L this period: −$68.92 (−$122.92 + $54.00). Desk cumulative: −$18.44 (down from +$50.48 at 10-02; the first desk-level negative cumulative in the record).

  • ECHO moved from LLR −0.082 (n=13) to −0.438 (n=14, W6/L8) on the 10-06 loss — a −0.356 increment, i.e. the SPRT registered the XBI stop as evidence against p0 at the pre-registered rate. It sits +3.383 from CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST and −2.506 from DEGRADED — neither boundary in play, but the trajectory is now clearly negative. xbi_leg sub-book: n=4, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0 (was n=3 at 10-02) — the exclusion review triggers at 15+ live trades, so it is nowhere near, but the leg is 4-for-4 losers.
  • SURGE moved from LLR +1.414 (n=10) to +1.843 (n=11, W6/L5) on the +$54.00 win — a +0.429 increment. It is now +1.101 from CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST (its closest approach to date) and −4.788 from DEGRADED. One more win of this size pushes it near the CONSISTENT boundary.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

ECHO — binding gate on the window's no-trade session was morning_signal (2 of 3 instrument-sessions); on 10-06 no gate bound and the fill was regime-vs-plan-divergence, not calibration

The two sessions divide cleanly.

  • 10-05 — morning_signal, clean regime. Three instrument-sessions, two blocked on morning_signal (SPY +0.14%, XLE −0.11% — both sub-±0.25% on a contained tape, structurally absent, not a grazed threshold) and one wide vol_ratio (XBI 0.541, signal +0.43%). This is the desk's modal quiet-side shape and matches the Regime Charter draft ("a session with no program in it"). No fix, wait.
  • 10-06 — nothing blocked, and the fill is the finding. XBI cleared every gate and on the strongest tier (vol_ratio 1.708 ≥ 1.5; exhaustion_score 2.28), which is precisely the "bigger, more-confirmed programs exhaust harder" premise the mechanism rests on. The premise failed: the stop was hit on the entry bar, because XBI was still selling off into 15:30 — the directional program was not substantially complete by 15:20. This is the inverse of every no-trade reflection the desk has filed for six weeks: on 10-06 the setup arrived in textbook form and the exhaustion thesis simply did not hold on this tape. N=1 for this shape — but the desk should be honest that a gate-confirmed, ≥1.5-tier fade losing on its entry bar is a mechanism-risk observation, not a no-trade near-miss.

Does the near-miss data say regime or calibration? Neither is the right frame for 10-06 — this is a fill, and the real reading is a plan/engine divergence plus an XBI-selection signal. Two distinct, equally-true points:

  1. Plan/engine divergence (calibration-shaped, already an open TEMPER item). The 10-06 plan stated XBI was "not a candidate" (no FDA/PDUFA catalyst) yet acknowledged the engine would evaluate the baseline SPY/XLE/XBI set. The engine took XBI, and XBI lost on the entry bar. Per the skill's plan-confidence taxonomy this is the strongest flag: p_trade 0.14 (<0.40) with a LOSS → the PM's cautious assessment was correct and the engine was wrong. This is the first live row the desk's long-carried plan/engine enforcement-gap item has gained since 08-19/08-20 — it was an "unvalidated hypothesis" with no denominator; it now has a losing instance where the engine traded the instrument the plan had ruled out. No enforcement proposal, no gate touched — but the item's status changes from "hypothesis, no evidence" to "hypothesis with a live confirming instance."
  2. XBI as the weakest leg (calibration-shaped, already escalated via the XBI trigger). xbi_leg is now n=4, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0; both ≥1.5-tier XBI fades (09-23 vol_ratio 2.017 → −$134.52; 10-06 1.708 → −$122.92) lost, one of them instantly. The structured path is the pre-registered XBI exclusion review at 15+ live trades (not near, n=4) — no unilateral action, and I am not treating a 4-trade sub-book as a recalibration mandate.

The 09-29 XLE counterexample (the desk's carried calibration item) is not advanced this window. Per the 2026-10-02 peer-review disposition (House Delta → House Echo), it is an unverified observation pending a clean rerun; XLE was blocked on morning_signal on 10-05 (−0.11%, structurally absent) and XLE is absent from the 10-06 blocked notes (the session produced a trade, so no per-instrument block list). The recommended rerun of agents/echo/deliverable_vol_ratio_floor_2026-09-05.{py,json} through the current date remains pending and unperformed.

Regime or calibration? REGIME for the 10-05 no-trade session. On 10-06 the relevant finding is not regime-vs-calibration at all — it is a plan/engine divergence (engine traded XBI against the plan's "not a candidate" call and lost on the entry bar), with an XBI-selection signal already covered by the pre-registered sub-book trigger. No gate touched, no floor moved, no new deliverable.

SURGE — binding gate on 10-05 was first_hour_signal (both legs, sub-floor, REGIME); 10-06 no gate bound and the fill is the winning low-confidence counter-case
  • 10-05 — first_hour_signal, clean regime. SPY +0.17%, QQQ +0.23% — both sub-±0.30% on a contained tape, structurally absent (not a graze; the nearest prior graze was 10-01 SPY −0.28%). No structure forms on a tape whose first hour never establishes direction.
  • 10-06 — the structure arrived and paid. SPY's first hour was +0.68% — the first clean establishment since 09-28, well above the ±0.30% floor — the pullback formed, and the resumption confirmed at ADX 45.52. The exit was a VWAP_BREAK (two consecutive closes on the wrong side of VWAP) at 13:05, i.e. the trade resolved as a modest winner rather than running to the 14:00 hard flat. This is the mechanism behaving exactly as designed: an established trend, a measured pullback, and a resumption with strong trend strength.

The forecast was low (0.12) and the fire won — the winning counter-case, not a plan-confidence problem. Per the desk's own rule, a p_trade < 0.40 fire that wins is regime behavior: the honest cautious base rate (five consecutive sub-floor sessions) was under-weighted by the engine, which found a genuine three-phase structure. This is not evidence to raise the p_trade floor and not a calibration fault to fix. The desk's discipline is to name it as the counter-case next to ECHO's losing low-confidence fire on the same session.

On the binding gates the desk tracks for SURGE, this session cleared all of them wide — no graze, no question reopened: first_hour_signal +0.68% (floor ±0.30%; the already-escalated 0.27–0.30% band was untouched), ADX 45.52 at the resumption bar (floor 22.0 — far above the 09-18 21.1 graze), and the three-phase price-path requirement completed. The 09-05 first-hour-floor diagnostic's verdict ("downstream structure blocks these days") is neither advanced nor contradicted — a session that clears the floor and completes the structure tells us nothing about the sub-floor near-misses the closed question covered. No re-open.

Regime or calibration? REGIME — both sessions on 10-05 were sub-floor on both legs with no structure forming, and the 10-06 clear-and-win is the mechanism working. No gate touched.

Narrative finding. This is the desk's second same-day co-trade (after 09-23) and its first co-trade where the members' engines resolved in opposite directions on the same low-probability session. The desk-level value-add is the discrimination the individual reflections cannot see: both members forecast p_trade ≤ 0.14 and both converted, but "a low forecast that converted" is not one finding — it is two, and they point opposite ways. SURGE's override was right (the tape differed from the prior five sessions; the mechanism found the difference and paid), ECHO's override was wrong (the plan had ruled the instrument out and the engine took it anyway, into an instant stop). The lesson the desk should carry forward is a forecast-reading discipline, not a gate change: after a long no-fire stretch, a converted low forecast must be adjudicated by whether the override was right, not by the Brier alone — and this window is the cleanest live illustration the desk has, with one of each.

Regime Watch

Regime watch: data-infra/regime/current.json — status: ok, as_of: 2026-09-22, i.e. stale by ten sessions (it lags 09-23, 09-24, 09-25, 09-28, 09-29, 09-30, 10-01, 10-02, 10-05 and today). Snapshot: spy_day flat, spy_open_to_close_pct −0.08%, spy_vs_sma50 above 50d, spy_drawdown_bucket <2% (spy_drawdown_pct −0.58%), vix_regime LOW (<18), vix 14.21. Live levels from the briefings, not the stale file: VIX 15.01 (10-06 close, −0.51 vs 15.52) — LOW, ~3.0 points under the LOW/MID boundary at 18; SPY 779.10 above SMA20 765.72; QQQ 759.62 above SMA20 731.68. None of the three shared tags is in a stressed state on the file. Against the desk's ## Regime Charter — still DRAFT, not ratified, and I am held to it as drafted — the window is charter-consistent on substance: neither stack needs the market to go up (ECHO fades the day's direction, SURGE rides it), and both filled intraday with no directional bias required. Persistence rule: not armed — and both no-fire counters reset. 10-06 gave each stack its first fill since 09-23 (ECHO) and 09-28 (SURGE), so the 10-consecutive-no-fire clause (ECHO was at 8, today would have been the 9th; SURGE at 5, today the 6th) resets to zero for both. No 5-session stretch in a stressed tag state. No proposal, no posture change, watch only. Because the feed is ten sessions stale I record "no confirmed trigger; persistence INDETERMINATE pending a dated refresh of 09-23 onward" — not a clean "0 of 5." On persistence I file through the Desk Review shapes; I do not move a gate on regime evidence alone.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • ECHO — plan/engine enforcement gap: NOW HAS A LIVE CONFIRMING INSTANCE (was unvalidated hypothesis). The 10-06 plan named XBI "not a candidate" (no FDA/PDUFA catalyst) while noting the engine evaluates its baseline SPY/XLE/XBI set; the engine traded XBI and was stopped on the entry bar (−$122.92). This is the first losing plan-divergent row since the 08-19/08-20 XBI pair, and it is the skill's strongest plan-confidence shape (p_trade 0.14 < 0.40 with a LOSS). No enforcement proposal, no gate touched — the correct action is to record the row and let the item's status move from "hypothesis, zero denominator" to "hypothesis, one live confirming instance."
  • ECHO — xbi_leg sub-book: n=4, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0 (was n=3 at 10-02). Exclusion review triggers at 15+ live trades — not triggered. Both ≥1.5-tier XBI fades are now losses (09-23 vol_ratio 2.017 → −$134.52; 10-06 1.708 → −$122.92, instant). Flag the 10-06 ≥1.5-tier XBI loss for TEMPER's vol_ratio 1.2–1.5 vs ≥1.5 tier watch — the ≥1.5 tier on XBI is 0-for-2.
  • ECHO — vol_ratio floor (1.2) / the 09-29 XLE counterexample: NOT ADVANCED. Per the 2026-10-02 peer-review disposition (House Delta → House Echo), 09-29 XLE is an unverified observation pending a clean rerun; XLE was blocked on morning_signal (10-05, −0.11%, structurally absent) and did not appear in a blocked list on 10-06 (trade session). The recommended rerun of the 09-05 deliverable through the current date remains pending and unperformed. No gate touched.
  • ECHO — exhaustion_score live-median watch: unchanged, still far from the 40-trade validation point (n=14). The 10-06 XBI entry (exhaustion_score 2.28) is a strong-tier sample and sits above the dev median (1.952). vol_ratio ≥1.5-tier discrimination watch: advanced by one — see xbi_leg above.
  • ECHO — plan-layer "shock day lifts participation" hypothesis: still 0-for-2. Not re-run — no shock day in the window. N=2; carried unchanged.
  • SURGE — first-hour-signal floor (±0.30%): ALREADY ESCALATED AND ANSWERED; NOT RE-OPENED. 10-06 cleared at +0.68% — comfortably above the floor — so the closed question is untouched. The 09-05 diagnostic's verdict (floor 0.0025 → zero new trades; downstream structure blocks) stands.
  • SURGE — ADX 22.0 floor / ADX re-tune watch. The 10-06 resumption bar printed ADX 45.52 — well above the floor, no graze. Live split unchanged (strong 3W/3L net +$459.85 vs moderate 2W/2L net −$118.92; the 10-06 trade's resumption ADX 45.52 places it in the strong cohort). Watch, no action.
  • SURGE — session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation. Carried unchanged, with the 09-28 counter-instance attached. The 10-06 session had no 10:00 ET Tier-1 print on its establishment moment — a cleaner establishment window than 10-05's ISM session — and the structure completed and won. N=1; no action.
  • SURGE — short-side question (charter item). 10-06 was a long (SPY long). Live ledger now: shorts 8 trades, 4W/4L, net −$127.35; longs 3 trades, 2W/1L, net +$522.28 (was 2 longs 1W/1L +$468.28; +$54.00 added). N far below any review trigger — no action.
  • SURGE — event-day skip diagnostic (resolved MIXED 2026-08-01, TEMPER-ratified; NFP cohort bimodal) and 2023 PF 0.95 watch: carried, no new data — no event-day skip in this window (both sessions eligible).
  • Operational: intelligence/runner-health-2026-10-05.md and -2026-10-06.md both read CLEAR — both echo and surge completed and wrote daily artifacts on each session in the window.
  • Plan-scoring note (desk-level, for score_plans.py): unchanged — SURGE's direction frontmatter is not an input to its signal, so the direction-hit field remains a scoring artifact for that stack.

Learnings Flags (desk-scoped)

Flag for learnings.md: house-echo / ECHO — over the 2026-10-05 → 2026-10-06 window (two sessions), the 10-05 no-trade session bound cleanly on morning_signal (SPY +0.14%, XLE −0.11%, both sub-±0.25% — structurally absent, REGIME) with one wide vol_ratio (XBI 0.541). The load-bearing datum is the 10-06 fill, and it is a plan/engine divergence, not a calibration miss: XBI cleared every gate at the strongest tier (vol_ratio 1.7082 ≥1.5; exhaustion_score 2.2803; signal −1.3349%) — the most-confirmed program of the recent stretch — and the contra fade was stopped on its own entry bar (entry and exit both 15:30:00; the 1.5×ATR stop ≈ 0.25% of price). The program was not substantially complete by 15:20; XBI kept falling. The plan had explicitly named XBI "not a candidate" (no catalyst) while acknowledging the engine evaluates the baseline set — so this is the skill's strongest plan-confidence shape (p_trade 0.14 <0.40, LOSS), and the first live confirming instance of the desk's long-carried plan/engine enforcement-gap item since 08-19/08-20. xbi_leg is now n=4, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0, with both ≥1.5-tier XBI fades losing (09-23 vol_ratio 2.017 → −$134.52; 10-06 1.708 → −$122.92 instant). Reading: REGIME on 10-05; on 10-06 the finding is a plan/engine divergence plus an XBI-selection signal already covered by the pre-registered 15-trade sub-book trigger — escalate the 10-06 row to the enforcement-gap item and the ≥1.5-tier XBI loss to TEMPER's tier watch; no gate touched, no floor moved, no new deliverable. The 09-29 XLE counterexample (peer-review: unverified pending rerun) is not advanced — the rerun remains pending.

Flag for learnings.md: house-echo / SURGE — over 2026-10-05 → 2026-10-06, 10-05 bound on first_hour_signal on both legs (SPY +0.17%, QQQ +0.23%, floor ±0.30% — sub-floor, REGIME). 10-06 produced the desk's first SURGE fill since 09-28 and the winning low-confidence counter-case: SPY long 40 @779.60 entered 10:35 after a +0.68% first-hour establishment (first clean clear of the ±0.30% floor in five sessions), the three-phase structure completed (VWAP pullback → resumption, ADX 45.52), and the trade exited VWAP_BREAK at 13:05 for +$54.00. The forecast was p_trade 0.12 — an honest cautious base-rate read after five consecutive sub-floor sessions — and the mechanism correctly overrode it: a p_trade < 0.40 fire that wins is regime behavior, not a plan-confidence problem and not evidence to raise the p_trade floor. SPRT moved +1.414 → +1.843 (n=11, W6/L5), now +1.101 from CONSISTENT. Reading: REGIME — the mechanism worked as designed; the closed first-hour-floor question is not re-opened (the floor was cleared wide); no gate touched. The symmetric desk-level lesson: on the same low-probability session, SURGE's override was right and ECHO's was wrong — a converted low forecast must be adjudicated by whether the override was right, not by the Brier alone.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Same-day-on-trade reflection (WS5) for 2026-10-05 → 2026-10-06 — desk net −$68.92, two sessions, two fills, desk cumulative −$18.44 (first desk-level negative cumulative in the record). 10-05 both no-trade, both forecasts correct (ECHO Brier 0.0144, SURGE 0.01 — clean regime: ECHO morning_signal 2 of 3 instrument-sessions, SURGE first_hour_signal both legs sub-±0.30%). 10-06 both stacks fired on low forecasts (p_trade 0.14 / 0.12) — the desk's worst-calibrated day of the stretch (Brier 0.7396 / 0.7744) — and the two overrides point opposite ways. SURGE +$54.00: SPY long, first-hour +0.68% (first clean establishment since 09-28), three-phase structure completed, ADX 45.52 at resumption, VWAP_BREAK exit — the winning counter-case (engine found a real pattern the cautious base rate missed); SPRT +1.414 → +1.843 (n=11), now +1.101 from CONSISTENT. ECHO −$122.92: XBI long on the strongest gate tier (vol_ratio 1.708 ≥1.5, exhaustion_score 2.28) stopped on its own entry bar — the program did not exhaust; the plan had named XBI "not a candidate", so this is the skill's strongest plan-confidence flag (p_trade 0.14 < 0.40, LOSS) and the first live confirming instance of the desk's plan/engine enforcement-gap item since 08-20; xbi_leg now n=4, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0 (both ≥1.5-tier XBI fades lost). SPRT −0.082 → −0.438 (n=14), CONTINUE, neither boundary in play. Verdict: REGIME on the no-trade side; on 10-06 the finding is a plan/engine divergence + an XBI-selection signal — no gate touched, XBI sub-book stays on its 15-trade trigger, flag the ≥1.5-tier XBI loss for TEMPER's tier watch and the rerun of the 09-05 vol_ratio deliverable (09-29 XLE counterexample) as still pending. Regime watch: current.json as_of 2026-09-22, stale by ten sessions; no shared tag stressed (SPY above 50d/SMA20, drawdown <2%, VIX 15.01 LOW); charter-consistent on substance; persistence not armed and both no-fire counters reset (both fired 10-06). Two flags filed for learnings.md (one per member); runner health CLEAR both sessions.
