Desk Plan — Reversal — 2026-09-23
Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-23-pm.md PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — this plan covers active members Null + Meridian only)
Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: MEDIUM — and again NOT a Tier-1 for either member, so neither event gate fires. Bucket A is clear through 2026-09-29 (next Tier-1: PCE Sep 30, then NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14; FOMC Minutes Oct 7, next decision Oct 28). There is no 8:30 AM US release — the first broad print is the S&P Global US flash PMI at 9:45 AM (est. ~53.6 / ~56.0 / ~55.2), then Fed Gov. Barr at 10:05 AM, EIA at 10:30 AM, Treasury buyback announcement at 11:00 AM. The MEDIUM rating is headline risk, exactly as yesterday: the day sits inside a live policy-coin-flip window — Xi Jinping arrives at Joint Base Andrews this afternoon with the main bilateral session tomorrow (Thu Sep 24), US–Iran indirect talks continue through the UNGA, and an ~even-odds October hike keeps the 10-yr (≈4.96%) reactive to Barr. Firm-wide status GO; a live, tradeable session for both members. Barr at 10:05 AM lands inside both windows (Null 9:30–10:30, Meridian 9:30–12:00) — same structural fact as yesterday, one notch softer (one speaker, not a three-speaker cluster).
- Session character expected: contained, two-tier, direction unknown — the briefing's own refusal case: a low-range morning, then headline chop into the close. Pre-market is flat to modestly higher with no gap bias (S&P futures +~0.05–0.1%, Nasdaq-100 +0.04%; Reuters/Morningstar disagree only at the timestamp-noise level) — no QQQ/SPY print at 07:00 ET on a thin IEX feed, so there is no confirmed gap. The range context matters to both members and it changed overnight: yesterday (09-22) was a contained session (QQQ +0.81% on a 7.33-pt range ≈ 0.80× ATR; SPY −0.08% on a 2.51-pt range ≈ 0.37× ATR — the tightest SPY session in the recent window), and 09-21's trend day has now rolled one session further back in both trailing ATR and the 20-day range average. VIX is 14.17 LOW, down from 14.87.
- VIX regime: 14.17 (LOW, <18) — the historically favorable cohort for this desk's Family 1 pair (Null's backtest WR 80.1% in the <18 bucket; Meridian's edge concentrated in the same regime). VIX gates neither mechanism. A tailwind note, not a signal.
- Key levels:
- QQQ: prior close 747.43 (Null's gap-fill target), prior-day range 740.98 – 748.31 (range 7.33), prior high 748.31 (Meridian's sweep level — only 0.88 pts / 0.12% above the prior close), 20-day SMA 716.70 (above SMA20 by 4.29%), ATR(14) 9.16.
- SPY: prior close 773.44, prior-day range 772.61 – 775.12 (range 2.51), prior high 775.12 (+1.68 pts / 0.22% above the prior close), 20-day SMA 765.15 (above by 1.08%), ATR(14) 6.77.
- IWM (no briefing block — my own read off the cached 1-min series, cached session 09-22): prior close 287.15, prior high 288.91 (+1.76 pts / 0.61% above), prior range 2.85.
- Null's gap band off ATR 9.16 / prior close 747.43 (±0.10× = ±0.92 pts; ±0.30× = ±2.75; ±0.70× = ±6.41): tradeable opens are [741.02, 746.51] (gap-down LONG) and [748.35, 750.18] (tiny gap-up SHORT); blocked are 746.51–748.35 (sub-floor both ways), 750.18–753.84 (in-band gap-up but trend-filtered by rule above the SMA20), ≥ 753.84 and ≤ 741.02 (oversize). The whole live window is 0.12%–0.86% of price — a knife-edge, not an opportunity.
- Macro backdrop (one sentence): a firm-wide GO on a macro-silent Wednesday whose real risk is a summit/Fed headline clock, opening flat on top of a contained session that has just cleared both members' pre-session gates for the first time since 09-18 — so the asks today are different in kind: Null needs a qualifying gap size, Meridian needs exhaustion, and neither needs a regime change.
- Desk-wide headline-risk assessment (explicit): no gate changes and no invented filters for either member. Barr 10:05 is a
MEDIUM-rated headline inside both windows; the honest treatment is on the forecast and on sizing — both run standard size, and any signal forming into 10:05 is lower-quality than the same shape on a quiet tape. Null's 9:30–10:30 window is partial mitigation; Meridian's kill zone spans it with none.
Null — QQQ (gap fade / FVG; MNQ proxy, gap measured at the cash open)
Setup present: POSSIBLE, and — for the first time in a week — genuinely live on both sides of the tape, but the binder is still the GAP-SIZE band and today the likely block is the SUB-FLOOR side, not the ceiling. p_trade 0.20, direction short, conviction low. Both calendar gates are clean: no Tier-1 (is_event_day(trade_date, tier_filter=2)), and the mega-cap earnings filter is clean — today's pre-open reporters (GIS, PAYX, CTAS) are none of QQQ's top-10 names (AAPL/NVDA/MSFT/AMZN/GOOGL/META/TSLA/AVGO/COST/NFLX), and Meta Connect at 7:00 PM is a product event, not an earnings release. A live, tradeable session.
- The band arithmetic (ATR 9.16, prior close 747.43). In-band gap = 0.92–6.41 pts (±0.12%–±0.86%); the tiny-gap relaxation window (< 0.30× ATR, which suspends the trend filter) = ≤ 2.75 pts. - Tradeable: a gap-down LONG if QQQ opens in [741.02, 746.51]; or a tiny gap-up SHORT if it opens in [748.35, 750.18] — the relaxation path, and the one that filled 09-18. - Blocked: open in (746.51, 748.35) — sub-floor, either direction, and this is where a genuinely flat open lands; (750.18, 753.84) — in-band but ≥ 0.30× on a gap-up above the SMA, refused by the trend filter by rule; ≥ 753.84 — oversize (> 0.70×); ≤ 741.02 — oversize the other way.
- The regime evidence, read honestly. Yesterday printed
gap_ratio=0.045 (gap −0.42, ATR 9.28) — sub-floor, and it blocked. The oversize cluster that ran 09-01 → 09-17 (0.933× / 1.149× / 1.492× / 1.395×) has clearly broken: the last four eligible opens read 0.045, 0.786, 0.244, 0.053 — one in-band fire (09-18, +$84.40), one ceiling block (09-21), two sub-floor blocks. The two-sided band is now doing the honest work, and the tape's most recent four opens have clustered at the small end, not the wide end. Caveat on the mirror side: the ATR feeding today's band (9.16) is lower than yesterday's (9.28), so the same absolute gap reads slightly larger today in ratio terms. - The knife-edge is the sub-floor, and it is 0.92 pts tall. A near-flat open (futures are flat-to-modestly-higher, Nasdaq-100 +0.04%) lands in 746.51–748.35 — a ±0.12% window — and blocks with no edge either way. The live up-side zone starts only 0.92 pts above the prior close and ends 2.75 pts above it; the whole tradeable band is under 0.9% wide in total. Nothing about the pre-market tape says the market is going to hand us a gap in it.
- Direction, if it fires, is short. The plausible path is the modest up-open that clears 748.35 and stays under 0.30×: a tiny in-band gap-up above the SMA20 is the trend-filter-relaxed path. A gap-down long is arithmetically live and I am not collapsing it (standing 08-17 correction: tiny gaps are trend-agnostic — the forecast is about occurrence, not about SMA20), but it requires an open 0.12%–0.86% below a tape that is not showing that.
- A third stand-down path stays live: pre-market NQ/ES volume above 2× its prior 5-day average stands the session down independently (
no_trade:premarket_volume). With no shock overnight, I read this as unlikely today — but it is a real outcome, not a formality.
Sizing vs event risk: standard — 1 MNQ, 0.5% risk, one position at a time, 11:00 ET hard exit. No changes. Not upsized on the LOW-VIX cohort; not downsized for MEDIUM. Barr at 10:05 sits inside the entry window, so a signal forming near it is headline-exposed — that is a sizing and quality statement, not a new filter. Null's cleared rule set has no Fedspeak skip and I am adding none.
Key levels: QQQ prior close 747.43 (fill target), prior high 748.31, prior low 740.98, SMA20 716.70 (price 4.29% above), ATR(14) 9.16; in-band gap 0.92–6.41 pts; tiny window ≤ 2.75 pts; tradeable open zones [741.02, 746.51] ∪ [748.35, 750.18].
Invalidation / stand-down: stand down if the cash open prints in (746.51, 748.35) (sub-floor, ±0.12%), ≥ 753.84 or ≤ 741.02 (oversize), or 750.18–753.84 (in-band gap-up refused by the trend filter), or pre-market volume > 2× its 5-day average. The 11:00 ET hard exit is unchanged. A sub-floor block is the modal outcome today, and no_trade:gap_size is not a near-miss.
Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=15 W14/L1, LLR +2.461, cumulative +$1,965.99, WR 93.3%. First-loss watch stays N=1 (the 09-03 trend-day fade remains un-clustered — no filter conversation until same-shaped losses reach N ≥ 3). No tweak.
Meridian — QQQ/SPY/IWM (kill-zone prior-high sweep + RSI(2) ≥ 88, bearish only)
Setup present: YES for the first time in a week — the volatility gate clears on ALL THREE legs, and the sweep geometry is the most favorable this stack has had in weeks. The binding gate is now, cleanly, the RSI(2) exhaustion — and that is a gate this tape has never satisfied. p_trade 0.20, direction short (mechanically — the stack is bearish-only), conviction med.
- The volatility gate clears — and this is a computed fact, not a vibe. Verified against the cached 1-min series (my own arithmetic; the engine's precheck at the open governs): QQQ prior range 7.33 vs a ~8.9–9.05 ceiling (0.81–0.86×), SPY 2.51 vs ~5.8–6.5 (0.38–0.43×), IWM 2.85 vs 3.33 (0.86×). All three pass. Yesterday the same gate blocked QQQ and SPY 40–70% past the ceiling; 09-22's containment reset it, and 09-21's 15.4-pt QQQ range has rolled one session further back in the 20-day window. This is the first clear on all three legs since 09-18 — and unlike 09-18, the clears are not marginal on SPY at all.
- The sweep geometry is close to ideal. QQQ's prior high 748.31 is only 0.88 pts (0.12%) above the prior close; SPY's 775.12 is 1.68 pts (0.22%) above; IWM's 288.91 is 1.76 pts (0.61%) above. On a flat-to-modestly-higher open, all three levels are tagged almost immediately — the sweep trigger is not the problem today. The mechanism has spent weeks blocked by volatility or by
no_sweep drift-away (09-14's +7.05 short); today the tape opens sitting on the levels. - The ADX band is the genuine unknown, and I am not going to dress it up. The engine read QQQ 42.5 / SPY 45.0 at the 09-21 open — far above the 32 ceiling — and 09-22 was a contained session (QQQ +0.81% on 0.80× ATR; SPY flat on 0.37× ATR). Per the standing desk arithmetic (07-24), a > 35 reading cannot decay into the 18–32 band in a single session — but 09-22 was not a trend day, so the band has had one full quiet session to work with, and a second is now stacking. My own cache-based ADX replication shows a steady decay through 09-22 on all three legs, but it does not reproduce the engine's logged levels, so I treat it as directionally informative only, not as a number to plan against. Calling it: SPY (the flat leg) is the more likely of the two index legs to land inside 18–32; QQQ is the more likely to still be above it; IWM is the leg where the band has historically been the swing factor (09-22 read 11.8 — below the floor). If all three legs land outside the band at the precheck, the day is a no-trade and the volatility clear costs nothing.
- Even if a leg clears volatility AND ADX, the exhaustion gate is the one that has never cleared — and that is the honest weight on this forecast. The live record: 09-18 QQQ swept twice and RSI(2) maxed at 11.1 vs 88; 09-21 IWM produced 10 sweeps with max RSI(2) 84.2 vs 88 — the closest approach this stack has ever had, and still a 3.8-pt miss. The standing read is unchanged and now reinforced: sweep completion + RSI(2) ≥ 88 is the binding gate, and on a mechanically-bid tape the sweeps form while the exhaustion does not. The favorable geometry in (2) raises the chance of tagging a level; it does not manufacture exhaustion.
- What a live setup requires today, stated plainly: one leg — most plausibly IWM or SPY — inside ADX 18–32, opening into a level that is 0.1–0.6% away, producing a spike through
prior_high that closes back below it in the same 5-min bar with RSI(2) > 88, then a bearish 1-min FVG retrace within 15 minutes. Three legs to try, two of the three historical binders now removed. That is a materially better setup than any session since the 09-09 near-miss — and it is still a 1-in-5 call, not a conviction one, because the gate that has never cleared is the one standing between the geometry and a trade.
Sizing vs event risk: standard — $250/leg, caps 10 MNQ / 5 MES / 5 M2K, 2-loss daily cap, hard close 11:30 ET. No changes. A cleared book is not a reason to size up, and a MEDIUM headline day is not a reason to size down from a standard that already assumes normal conditions. Barr at 10:05 sits inside the kill zone; any fire into it is treated as a standard-size, lower-quality fire. iwm_leg remains n=0 — honest live anchor ~56%, not the 73.3% headline.
Key levels: QQQ prior high 748.31 (sweep level, +0.12% from prior close) / prior close 747.43; SPY prior high 775.12 (+0.22%) / prior close 773.44; IWM prior high 288.91 (+0.61%) / prior close 287.15. ADX band 18–32 (09-21 read 42.5 / 45.0; the level today is the day's real question). Volatility ceilings ≈ 8.9–9.05 QQQ / 5.8–6.5 SPY / 3.33 IWM (1.25× the 20-day average range). ATR(14) QQQ 9.16 / SPY 6.77 → the 2.0× ATR(5m) stop, with the same-sign guard voiding any malformed stop.
Invalidation / stand-down: stand down if the ADX precheck lands outside 18–32 on every leg (the base case I am not assuming away), or if a leg sweeps but never prints a close-back-below bar with RSI(2) ≥ 88, or if no leg reaches its prior high at all. The 11:30 ET hard close is unchanged. rsi_reject is the gate I expect to carry the day again — and it is not a near-miss when it reads 11 or 84 against an 88 line.
Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=3 W2/L1, LLR +0.222, cumulative +$385.22, WR 66.7%; spy_leg n=1 WR 100%; iwm_leg n=0. Standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. No tweak.
Plan Filed
- Filed: 2026-09-23 (pre-market, 04:38 PT / 07:38 ET)
- Frontmatter forecasts complete for active members only (Null, Meridian): yes. Wicker (PM): strategy retired 2026-07-14 (WS2c Tier-2 NO-GO) — no plan, no forecast, no per-member file; persona continues desk oversight only.
- Firm-wide GO; event risk MEDIUM (no Tier-1 through Sep 29 — next PCE Sep 30 — but an active summit/Iran headline clock and Barr at 10:05 inside both windows). Both members' Tier-1 event gates and Null's mega-cap earnings filter are clean. Null p_trade 0.20 / direction short / conviction low; Meridian p_trade 0.20 / direction short / conviction med.
- The two calls are equal in probability and opposite in structure — and that is the day's real content. Null's session is narrow: the tradeable band is 0.12%–0.86% of price and the modal open (flat) lands in the sub-floor block. Meridian's session is wide open for the first time in a week: the volatility gate clears on all three legs with real margin, and all three prior highs sit within 0.1–0.6% of the prior close — but the gate that has actually been binding (RSI(2) ≥ 88) has never cleared on this tape. Null's binder is a magnitude question; Meridian's is an exhaustion question.
- Base-case desk outcome: two no-trades — Null on
gap_size (sub-floor), Meridian on rsi_reject or adx_precheck. Both are priced at 0.20 rather than collapsed lower because each stack's likeliest blocker is now one gate away from releasing, not a regime wall: Null's band is two-sided and active (one fire in the last four sessions), Meridian's volatility + geometry binders are gone. - Headline-risk note: no gate changes and no invented filters for either member. MEDIUM is a rating gap (Tier-1 clear, headline risk live) — absorbed as standard size, not as a plan-level stand-down and not as a new Fed-speech gate.
- Reconfirmation ledger: no open item gates today. Meridian IWM expansion CLOSED 2026-08-20 (strategy_v7); standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. Wicker's feed/session re-run remains the desk's highest-priority open reconfirmation (unchanged; own stack retired, not a today blocker).
- Carried watch: Null — needs a QQQ open in [741.02, 746.51] (gap-down long) or [748.35, 750.18] (tiny gap-up short), with pre-market volume ≤ 2× its 5-day average. Meridian — needs a leg inside ADX 18–32 with a sweep into 748.31 / 775.12 / 288.91 and RSI(2) ≥ 88; 09-21's IWM 84.2 vs 88 remains the closest the exhaustion gate has come and the number to keep watching.
- Method note (transparency, no execution impact): the volatility-gate and IWM-level numbers in this plan are my own read of the cached 1-min series (
data/market_data/assay/_1min_exthrs.parquet, through the 2026-09-22 session), because the cache lags the current session and the briefing carries no IWM block. Every pre-session number that actually matters is the engine's own precheck at the open — nothing here touches execution, and no member's gate stack was read from or written to.
