Desk Plan — House Vesper — 2026-09-23

Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-23-pm.md PM: VESPER — the evening star, the first light after the close.

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the firm's second consecutive MEDIUM, and again rated not on a data print. No Tier-1 (Bucket A clear; next PCE Sep 30, NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14; FOMC Minutes Oct 7), no US 8:30 AM release today, ordinary Wednesday session, firm-wide Scanner status GO. What holds it off LOW is that today sits inside a live policy-coin-flip window: the domestic calendar is macro-loud but macro-light (flash PMIs 9:45, Fed Gov. Barr 10:05, EIA 10:30, Treasury buyback 11:00), while the live vectors are (1) the Trump–Xi summit sequence — Xi arrives at Joint Base Andrews this afternoon (~3 PM ET, Trump greeting him on the tarmac), with the arrival ceremony, main bilateral session and State Dinner on Thursday Sep 24 and the Busan tariff truce expiring Nov 10, i.e. a scheduled trigger for trade/tariff/AI-export/rare-earth headlines that runs straight through my window; (2) the rate regime — 10-yr ~4.96% / 30-yr ~5.30% pinned near multi-decade highs with an ~even-odds October hike priced, so any Fed comment is long-end-reactive; and (3) Meta Connect 2026 at 7:00 PM ET — after the close, an AI-complex read-through that lands while I am holding. Off-cycle earnings (CTAS/PAYX/GIS/CBRL pre-open, FUL/SFIX post-close) are single-name, below index risk.
  • Session character expected: Contained, two-tier, direction unknown — headline chop into the close. Futures flat-to-modestly-higher, no gap bias to fade or chase; the loud catalysts are all known and scheduled rather than surprises. The briefing expects a low-range morning with no 8:30 damper, then headline chop concentrating in the afternoon (Xi's arrival, Barr, the buyback announcement) — and explicitly refuses to pre-assign direction, the same refusal posture as the last six sessions. Trailing ATR is settled but not small (SPY 6.77, QQQ 9.16) on a tape whose last two SPY sessions were 0.37× and sub-ATR respectively. My own relevance: none — I am flat by 09:31 and never in the market while it is open. The character that matters to me is the overnight one (below).
  • VIX regime: 14.17 (-0.70 vs prior close 14.87) — LOW (<18), the calmest print of the week and the regime in which the overnight premium has historically accrued. Logged, never gating (no VIX filter by design — considered and rejected in Phase 2).
  • Key levels: SPY prior close (09-22) 773.44, prior-day range 772.61–775.12, above the 20-day SMA 765.15, ATR14 daily 6.77; QQQ prior close 747.43, above its SMA20 716.70, ATR14 9.16. My only levels are my own anchors: cycle 49's entry — 773.54 (Tue 09-22 16:00 auction-inclusive SIP close; 29.8989 shares, $23,127.97 notional, 90.0% of $25,697.74 equity — currently held, exiting 09:31 ET this morning) and tonight's 16:00 auction print (cycle 50's entry). The exit is temporal, not price-based.
  • Macro backdrop: A hawkish-Fed / high-yields regime layered under a live summit week — Chair Warsh hiked Sep 16 (first since 2023), the long end sits near multi-decade highs with October a coin flip, the dollar is at an eight-week high (DXY ~100.86), and oil is draining as a risk premium (Brent below $100 for a second session, a sixth straight daily decline, WTI in the low $90s) on Hormuz diplomacy and the Saudi East-West pipeline restart. Lower oil is doing double duty — it relieves the inflation channel the hawkish Fed is fighting and it lifts risk appetite. (Input note, desk-blind and minor, second filing: the briefing's own reconciliation section resolves this correctly, but the watchlist's headline still carries the corrected "Wed Sep 24" phrasing that the 09-22 plan flagged as weekday-mismatched — Sep 24, 2026 is a Thursday. Substance is unaffected; flagging for the source, not for me.)
  • The overnight window's own inventory (the only character I trade): the 16:00 Wed → 09:31 Thu leg carries more scheduled content than a macro-silent night — Meta Connect keynote at 7:00 PM ET tonight (post-close), the Xi arrival evening and Asia/Europe headline flow ahead of Thursday's main bilateral session, and, critically, Thursday's 8:30 AM ET BLS claims print and New Home Sales (Aug) lands INSIDE my hold — the week's first US macro releases, printing ~61 minutes before my exit anchor. That is a genuinely populated complement of the trading day.

vesper — SPY (PM: VESPER)

Forecast: p_trade 1.0, direction long, conviction med.

On conviction, stated plainly so it cannot be misread as a skip or a de-risk: VESPER has no signal gate, no event filter and no skip logic — it takes the overnight hold every session, so p_trade is 1.0 by construction (cycle 49's 09:31 exit books a real long trade this morning; cycle 50 opens tonight at 90% notional). The med is not doubt about whether the trade happens — that is certain — and it is not permission to size down. It is the honest ex-ante discount on the width of tonight's two-sided tail, and today it is earned on harder grounds than yesterday's: the overnight leg is the only leg exposed to the week's two live headline channels and it now contains a real macro release. The meds this desk has used — 5 of 45 prior plans (the 09-11 CPI carry, the 09-14/15/16 FOMC sequence, 09-22) — were all nights whose complement of the trading day was genuinely populated; every macro-silent night has been high. What makes tonight med rather than high:

  • A Tier-2 macro release prints inside the hold. Thursday's jobless claims and New Home Sales (Aug) at 8:30 AM ET land ~61 minutes before my 09:31 exit — the first US data of the week, on a tape that has spent the stretch refusing to pick a direction. A claims surprise or a soft housing print does not have to be a shock to move a broad index in the pre-open hours, when my position is the only one on the book.
  • The headline channel is scheduled, not hypothetical. Meta Connect at 7:00 PM ET is post-close by design, so its read-through into the AI/semis leadership leg — the leg that has been carrying the index — arrives after I enter. Xi's arrival this afternoon opens the summit sequence whose main bilateral session is Thursday, with the tariff truce clock running; a leak, a terse exchange, or a rare-earth/AI-export headline out of Asia or Europe lands squarely in my window.
  • The rate channel is live and shaky. With the 10-yr within a whisker of 5% and October priced near a coin flip, Barr at 10:05 AM shapes today's close (and therefore where cycle 50 starts), while any overnight long-end move presses the high-multiple complex through the hours I own.

None of that is a reason to condition, and I am not conditioning: one trade, standard 90%, no gate. The reason it is not low is the desk's own record — the phase's largest single-night win (+114.89 net bps, cycle 45) and its worst loss (−122.77, the early-phase COVID-adjacent draw) live in the same unconditional distribution, taken at the same 90%. Do not import any other stack's skip logic here — VESPER has none to import, and the firm-wide GO addresses the intraday desks; the overnight holder is unconditional regardless.

  • Setup present: Yes — by design, always. There is no setup to wait for. Cycle 49 (Tue 09-22 16:00 entry 773.54, 29.8989 shares, $23,127.97 notional, 90.0% of $25,697.74 equity — held in the ledger since yesterday's close) exits at the 09:31 bar open THIS morning. At 15:50 tonight VESPER enters cycle 50 at the 16:00 auction-inclusive close, 90% of post-exit equity, held into Thu 09-24 09:31 — an ordinary Wednesday-close overnight observation. Both legs answered unconditionally.
  • Session-character fit: Perfect by construction — the stack is never in the market while it is open, so today's contained two-tier tape and its afternoon headline chop cannot touch me. Flat by 09:31. The character that matters is the overnight one, read above: VIX LOW 14.17 (the regime the premium prefers), both instruments above their SMAs, and a complement-of-the-day that is populated by a post-close keynote, a live summit sequence and Thursday's 8:30 releases. Tonight's hold is an ordinary single-session carry (Wed 16:00 → Thu 09:31) — cycle 49, which exits this morning, was the Tuesday-close carry (one observation by rule, strategy_v2 §Entry Rules 4).
  • What MEDIUM does not change, spelled out because this is where the discipline is actually tested: no event-calendar skip (considered and rejected in Phase 2, strategy_v2 §Entry Rules 5), no conditioned sizing, no direction flip, no early entry, no skip (rules 4 & 5). Any conditioning would have to first beat the unconditional baseline in a Bench study — none exists — without destroying the ~250 obs/yr validation velocity. The cleared sample (n=1,759) held every FOMC, CPI, NFP, PCE, expiry and rebalance night by construction. Tonight is not an edge case; it is an ordinary draw from the same distribution, and the risk is the premium.

Monitors check (direct run — run live for this plan, 2026-09-23):

  • Mechanism watch: LIVE-GREEN — n=2189 overnight pairs, last exit 2026-09-22; trailing-250 +6.414 bps/day, trailing-500 +4.240 bps/day vs the 0.655 kill floor (~9.8× / ~6.5× above); full-sample +4.114. ==> OK: premium intact. No DEGRADED flag. Cycle 48's +10.12 net-bps win has rolled into the series, lifting trailing-250 from +6.382 (09-22 plan) to +6.414. The only number that can ever stop me.
  • Execution-cost SPRT: CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST (sticky since obs #8, 2026-07-27; flagged: []), n=48, LLR +18.000. Simulation only — fills price at the anchors, shortfall ≡ 0; decision-relevant only against real broker fills. No realized-cost breach on record (cycle 48 realized 1.000 bps, on the ≤ 1.0 bps/day budget; roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0). Cycle 49's exit rolls in at today's 16:30 ET refresh.
  • Edge SPRT: CONTINUE — formal-only; cannot decide at realistic samples (~18.6 yr). CONTINUE is not evidence of edge — and that honesty label cuts against reading any single night, mine included, as evidence of anything.

Continuity note for the desk record: 48 completed cycles, cumulative net +$697.74 (gross +$807.02, commissions $109.27), ≈ +310.98 net bps, mean +6.479 net bps/day vs the 3.151 anchor (~0.47 SE above on the ~48.8 bps live SD — a reading, not a signal, and the pre-registered oscillation continuing), win rate 58.3% (28/48) — not the benchmark. Cycle 49 (Tue 09-22 16:00 entry 773.54 → Wed 09-23 09:31) exits 09:31 ET this morning, and cycle 50 enters tonight at standard 90%. Recent cycle outcomes: 43 −11.52 / 44 +23.55 / 45 +114.89 (record win) / 46 −18.31 / 47 +127.70 net (+55.54 net bps) / 48 +23.38 net (+10.12 net bps) (booked 09-22 09:31 — the small favorable side of an ordinary two-sided draw). Plan calibration: perfect scored rows since founding (Brier 0.0 on all 44 scored sessions). The 08-07 dispatch hole and the 09-02 reflection gap remain the only record gaps.

Invalidation: None structural. An unconditional strategy has no invalidation condition by design. The kill discipline is the mechanism watch on market data (trailing-250 and trailing-500 < 0.655 bps/day gross → TEMPER review), checked daily, not resolvable intra-session, and not conditional on the flash PMIs, Barr, the buyback announcement, Meta Connect, the Xi arrival, the summit, oil, the Fed, the 10-yr or the semis. Tonight's cycle 50 has no skip trigger by design (rules 4 & 5) — it carries today's close regardless of what the afternoon headline chop or Thursday's 8:30 claims/Housing print do to the tape. If Thursday's 09:31 open gaps against cycle 50, I take and log it; that is the price of the premium. A 2022-regime drawdown (≈ −11.4% on equity at 0.9 notional) is within tolerance and is not a kill signal; the −26.5% COVID drawdown (2020-02-12 → 2020-03-23, 8-month recovery) is inside the validated sample. The only stand-downs are force-majeure (closing-auction failure, account/regulatory constraint, exchange halt) — none indicated.

What I am watching: (1) Cycle 49's 09:31 exit print vs entry 773.54 — the Tuesday-close carry, on a pre-market of flat-to-modestly-higher futures and draining oil; no pre-assigned direction, either branch is one observation, not a finding. (2) Tonight's 16:00 auction print for cycle 50 — the anchor itself, landing after the afternoon's Barr/buyback headline chop and just before Meta Connect; entered at standard 90% unconditionally. (3) Thursday's 8:30 AM ET claims + New Home Sales, inside my hold — the first US data of the week, printing 61 minutes before my exit; the single most concrete new exposure on tonight's leg. (4) The Xi/Meta Connect headline channel through Asia and Europe — the arrival tonight, the keynote at 7:00 PM ET, and any summit pre-positioning ahead of Thursday's bilateral session. (5) The mechanism watch stays live-green (trailing-250 +6.414 / −500 +4.240 vs 0.655) — the only number that can ever stop me. After 09:31, flat and idle until 15:50 — doing exactly nothing, which is the discipline.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-23 04:36 PDT
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes (vesper: p_trade 1.0, direction long, conviction med)
  • Mechanism watch confirms premium intact: yes — direct run 2026-09-23: trailing-250 +6.414 / trailing-500 +4.240 bps/day vs the 0.655 kill threshold (n=2,189 pairs, last exit 2026-09-22; full-sample +4.114) — GREEN, no DEGRADED flag
  • Cost budget confirmed: no realized-cost breach on record; execution-cost SPRT CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST (n=48, LLR +18.000, flagged: []), edge SPRT CONTINUE (formal-only); cycle 48 realized round-trip 1.000 bps, roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0
  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — no Tier-1 (next PCE Sep 30); the two live vectors are the Xi arrival / Thursday summit sequence and the ~5% 10-yr with an even-odds October hike. Firm-wide Scanner GO; VESPER's own cadence is unconditional and overrides the framing — it takes the overnight hold every session, with size unchanged at 90%.
  • Cycle 49 (Tue 09-22 16:00 entry 773.54, 29.8989 shares, $23,127.97 notional, 90.0% of $25,697.74 equity) exits 09:31 ET this morning. A real trade booked today, held unconditionally (rules 4 & 5).
  • Cycle 50 enters at tonight's 16:00 close — the ordinary Wednesday→Thursday carry (Wed 09-23 16:00 → Thu 09-24 09:31), standard 90% size, unconditionally, no skip, no sized-down de-risk. Its window contains Meta Connect (7 PM ET), the Xi-arrival/summit headline flow, and Thursday's 8:30 AM claims + New Home Sales.

House Vesper — Desk Reflection — 2026-09-23

Plan reference: desks/house-vesper/plans/2026-09-23-plan.md EOD briefing: dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-23-eod.md PM: VESPER — the evening star, the first light after the close.

What Happened (desk level)

One desk, one member, one unconditional overnight stack. Single-session window since the 09-22 filing. Cycle 49 — the ordinary Tuesday→Wednesday carry I entered Tue 09-22 16:00 at the auction-inclusive anchor 773.54 — resolved this morning as a LOSS: exit print 772.51 at the 09:31 bar open, −$30.80 gross / −$33.11 net (−13.3154 gross / −14.3154 net bps), commission $2.31 = 0.9988 bps. The trade booked a real long today (the "hit"), and it was a small loss at the favorable-cost end of the distribution — the 49th completed cycle, and the phase's 21st losing draw.

The sharpest content of the session is what the exit print sat on, and when the day's damage happened. Cycle 49's exit (772.51 at 09:31) landed −0.0414% versus the day's open (772.83) and +0.5964% ABOVE the eventual close (767.93): the overnight leg carried a small −0.1332% loss, and the entire −0.5929% post-exit give-back happened while I was flat and idle. The driver of that give-back was a scheduled print I had put in my own event table at MEDIUM impact and then under-ranked: the 9:45 AM ET S&P Global flash US Composite PMI printed 58.4 (highest since July 2021) and landed as a hawkish rates shock, echoed by Fed Gov. Barr at 10:05 — the 10-yr jumped 13.89bp to 5.106%, its highest since 2007 and its biggest one-day rise since April 2025, and the tape sold off tech-led (QQQ −0.84% versus SPY −0.71%, Russell 2000 −1.60%, Energy the only green sector). Every minute of that move sits outside my hold: the PMI crossed at 9:45 and Barr spoke at 10:05, both after my 09:31 exit and before my 16:00 entry. The overnight leg itself was quiet; the trading day, which I am structurally never in, took the loss.

Cycle 50 then opened at tonight's 16:00 anchor — the ordinary Wednesday→Thursday carry. Entry 767.63 at the 16:00 auction-inclusive SIP print, $23,098.17 notional (30.0902 shares, 90.0% of post-exit equity $25,664.63), held into Thu 09-24 09:31, at standard size, unconditionally (rules 4 & 5) — no skip, no sized-down de-risk. Anchor coherence note, filed so it is not re-derived as a discrepancy: the 16:00 auction-inclusive print (767.63) sits 3.907 bps BELOW the EOD's consolidated SPY close (767.93) — the mirror image of Tuesday's print, which sat 1.29 bps above its consolidated close. That is not a data conflict; it is the designed anchor (P27) — I trade the auction-inclusive 16:00 SIP bar, not the reported consolidated close — and the sign of the few-bps gap simply reflects which side of the closing auction the marginal print landed on. The anchor printed clean; the only event that could stand this desk down (a failed/erratic closing auction — a force-majeure stand-down, not a signal) did not occur.

Continuity for the desk record: 49 completed cycles, cumulative net +$664.63 (gross +$776.22, commissions $111.59), mean +6.0544 net bps/day vs the 3.151 anchor (SD 48.356, SE 6.908 → ~0.42 SE above), win rate 57.1% (28/49) — not the benchmark. Realized net range to date: −122.77 to +114.89 bps. Cycle 49's −14.32 net bps pulled the realized mean from +6.479 (n=48) to +6.054 (n=49) — a −0.42 bps/day step from a single small loss, the pre-registered oscillation continuing. Plan calibration: the 09-23 row is already scored clean (plan-calibration.csv: p_trade 1.0 → traded 1, direction long → long hit — scored on the setup firing, not the sign of the outcome, Brier 0.0), extending the perfect scored run since founding. The 09-02 reflection gap and the 08-07 dispatch hole remain the only record gaps.

The Load-Bearing Question: What Was the Binding Gate This Period?

Neither regime nor calibration — no gate of this desk was grazed, and the period is an ordinary two-sided draw on the losing side at the small end (−14.32), taken identically to the way the record win (+114.89) and every win around it were taken. For an unconditional stack there is no setup gate to bind and no threshold to graze: the blocked= near-miss notes are empty by construction, always, and no p_trade gate was ever under consideration (p_trade 1.0, direction long, by design). The only kill-capable gate this desk owns is the mechanism watch on market data, and it is not remotely close to binding:

  • Mechanism watch (the only gate that can ever stop this desk) — direct run filed for this reflection (2026-09-23): GREEN, n=2190 overnight pairs, last exit 2026-09-23; trailing-250 +6.308 / trailing-500 +4.178 bps/day gross vs the 0.655 floor (~9.6× / ~6.4× above), full-sample +4.106. ==> OK: premium intact. No DEGRADED flag, nothing appended to monitor-flags.md, no TEMPER review. The two-window condition (P12) is not close: both windows would have to fall below 0.655. Cycle 49's −13.32 gross-bps loss rolled into the series and nudged trailing-250 from +6.414 to +6.308 and trailing-500 from +4.240 to +4.178 — a single loss moved the trailing windows toward the floor by a hair, and they remain roughly an order of magnitude above it. That is what a healthy margin looks like: one bad night does not threaten a kill gate that sits ~9.6× away.
  • Realized-cost check (the pre-registered execution budget, ≤ 1.0 bps/day round-trip) — on budget. Cycle 49's commission was $2.31 on $23,127.97 notional = 0.9988 bps, and the gross→net bps step is exactly 1.0000; roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0. This is the check the desk plan pre-registers every morning and it has never breached — one trade, standard 90%, budgeted cost. No realized-cost failure to fix, no deviation to explain.
  • Execution-cost Gaussian SPRT (decision-capable — decision-relevant only against real broker fills): CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST, n=49, LLR +18.375 (sticky since obs #8, 2026-07-27), flagged: []. Simulation only — fills price at the anchors, shortfall ≡ 0.
  • Edge Gaussian SPRT (formal-only): CONTINUE, n=49, LLR +0.088, E[N] ≈ 4656 obs (~18.6 yr). CONTINUE is not evidence of edge — and that honesty label cuts against reading today's −14.32 as evidence of decay exactly as hard as it cut against reading the record +114.89 as evidence of edge.

Were the pre-registered kill/watch distances right for the session? Yes — and the session is a clean test of which distance is load-bearing. The plan pre-registered exactly two distances: the realized-cost budget (≤ 1.0 bps/day) and the mechanism-watch kill floor (trailing-250 and trailing-500 gross < 0.655 → TEMPER review), and it deliberately pre-registered no price-based watch — the exit is temporal, not price-based. Both pre-registered distances were correct for the session: the cost distance was hit exactly (1.000 bps) and the kill distance was never within an order of magnitude of binding. The session also re-demonstrated why a price watch would be the wrong instrument for this stack: had I held a stop or a "sell the close" rule, I would have worn the full −0.59% intraday give-back that the temporal exit stepped in front of. The distance that mattered today was the temporal one — 09:31 versus 16:00 — and it was right.

The one honest calibration note, logged so it is not re-litigated as hindsight. The plan's med conviction was the ex-ante statement that tonight's two-sided tail was wider than a macro-silent LOW-VIX night — earned on Thursday's 8:30 AM ET claims + New Home Sales landing inside the hold (~61 minutes before the exit anchor), the post-close Meta Connect keynote, and the live Xi/summit headline channel. It was not a weak directional call, not a skip, and not permission to size down, and nothing about it changed the order. Cycle 49's small loss was set before any of tonight's named content existed — it was a Tuesday-close carry into a quiet overnight, and its loss is an ordinary draw, not a verdict on the med framing. The med's tail belongs to cycle 50, which is still open; its resolution tomorrow is one observation, not a finding. The genuine, if minor, plan miss is elsewhere and is stated in Plan Accuracy: I ranked the summit headline as the primary live risk and the 9:45 flash PMI as a subordinate line in my own event table, and the print I under-ranked is precisely what shaped the close below me.

Plan Accuracy (desk level)

DimensionRating (1–5)Notes
Event risk call4MEDIUM held, and my named rate channel fired exactly as written. The plan put the day's live vectors as (1) the Xi/summit headline sequence, (2) the rate regime — "10-yr within a whisker of 5% with an even-odds October hike, long-end-reactive to any Fed comment," naming Barr 10:05 as the shaping print — and (3) the post-close Meta Connect read-through. Vector (2) fired precisely: the 10-yr jumped 13.89bp to 5.106%, the highest since 2007 and the biggest one-day rise since April 2025, and it shaped today's close — and therefore cycle 50's entry anchor (767.63). The one honest deduction: like the AM briefing I drew on, I under-ranked the 9:45 flash PMI (composite 58.4, highest since July 2021) relative to the summit headline, and that print was the day's actual driver. Rated correctly, ranked imperfectly — the EOD's own verdict on the day. No Tier-1 inside two days; next is PCE Sep 30
Session character call4My character read — "contained, two-tier, direction unknown, headline chop into the close" — was half right. The containment call held exactly: SPY true range 6.94 = 1.00× ATR(14), a normal-range session, VIX 15.18 LOW. The direction refusal was correct (the EOD graded it STUCK). But "headline chop" was wrong: the session was a clean open-high fade — SPY opened 772.83, printed its high 773.00 essentially at the open, and ground to 766.50 — and the decline began mechanically at the 9:45 print, not from a headline. I also carried the AM's tier polarity ("tech/AI leadership against a rate-capped broad tape"), which inverted: tech was the weak leg (QQQ −0.84% vs SPY −0.71%, Russell −1.60%, Dow the most resilient). My only character surface is the overnight leg, and that leg was quiet (−0.1332%) — the mis-read cost nothing
Setup prediction5Unconditional — the only forecast is exit/entry placement, and both landed exactly where pre-registered: cycle 49 exited the 09:31 bar open at 772.51, and cycle 50 entered 767.63 at the 16:00 auction-inclusive close at standard 90% size ($23,098.17 notional / 30.0902 shares), held into Thu 09-24 09:31 — no skip, no conditioned sizing
Adjustments5None made — 90% notional, 16:00 auction-inclusive anchor, 09:31 exit, all standard. Fifth consecutive session of the same discipline with no drift: +114.89, −18.31, +55.54, +10.12, −14.32 net bps across five nights at the identical standard 90% — no de-risk "off a win," no re-size "after a loss," no special handling of the "med" conviction. Cost realized at 0.9988 bps — on the ≤ 1.0 bps/day budget, roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0, no breach. No stand-down condition indicated

Overall plan accuracy: 4.5 / 5. Machine-scored: the 09-23 plan forecast p_trade 1.0 / long / med; cycle 49's exit booked a real long trade today (traded = 1), direction long → long hit — Brier 0.0, extending the perfect scored run since founding (plan-calibration.csv line: 2026-09-23,house-vesper,vesper,1.0,long,med,1,1,long,1,0.0). The scoring subtlety, restated: "direction hit" here means the booked trade was long, as forecast — the score does NOT care that the long lost money, any more than it cared on the winning days. Calibration captures setup-firing fidelity, trivially perfect for an unconditional stack by design; it says nothing about the sign of a single draw.

Learnings (desk level)

  • The temporal exit stepped in front of the entire day's damage for the second consecutive session — and today it is the difference between a small loss and a large one. Cycle 49's 09:31 exit sat at 772.51, essentially the day's open (772.83, −0.0414%), while the session then faded −0.5929% to 767.93. The move that hurt the day — the flash PMI's hawkish rates shock and its 14bp 10-yr jump — began at 9:45, fourteen minutes after I was flat. The overnight leg paid a small −0.1332%; the trading day, which I am never in, paid the larger loss that I never took. This is the mechanism's own signature and the standing argument for the temporal exit: a "sell the close" variant would have surrendered the 0.60% the 09:31 print preserved. Filed once as desk-record color; no strategy implication (rules 4 & 5 untouched, no conditional exit contemplated).
  • The realized-cost check is the desk's pre-registered distance, and it was hit exactly on a losing night — which is the point. Commission 2.31 on 23,127.97 notional = 0.9988 bps; the gross→net step is exactly 1.0000 bps, roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0. The cost budget is orthogonal to the sign of the draw: on a −14.32 bps night the cost discipline read identically to a winning night. Cost is a first-class design question tracked separately from mechanism decay, and today confirms the two are still separable — the loss was the premium's two-sided drift, not an execution failure.
  • One small loss moved the trailing-250 window toward the floor by a hair (+6.414 → +6.308) and left it ~9.6× above it — the clearest possible illustration that the kill gate is not a P&L-pain detector. A −13.32 gross bps night on a ~48 bps live SD is a ~0.3σ realization; the kill discipline is measured on market data (rule 4), never on the night's P&L, and the market data says premium intact. No single night — win or loss, large or small — is evidence about the mechanism.
  • Check performed, nothing new filed. I checked backtest-agent/learnings.md before filing, per standing instruction. Two candidate items were examined and both declined: (1) the mechanism-watch silent-cache-fallback item (filed 2026-08-04) was marked RESOLVED on 2026-09-04 when the watch began returning a live as-of-today read — today's direct run again returns a live read (n=2190, last exit 2026-09-23), so re-filing would be re-filing a closed item; (2) the EOD-generator mechanism-watch line item, on file as a 09-21→09-22 update, is unchanged today (the line is omitted a third consecutive session — see the operational note below) and a third identical omission is not a new finding. No learnings flag is filed this period.
  • Operational note (unchanged item, described not re-filed): the shared EOD desk-summary's VESPER line again carries only the execution-cost SPRT readout (CONSISTENT, n=49, LLR +18.375) and the edge SPRT (CONTINUE) and makes no mechanism-watch assertion — the third consecutive omission (09-21, 09-22, 09-23), so the eight-session false-escalation streak (09-08 through 09-18) stays broken in output. Stated honestly: the line is omitted, not corrected; a correctly-populated mechanism-watch line (trailing means read as above the 0.655 floor) has still not been observed. The standing convention is unchanged and is already on file: the direct daily run (filed each morning in the plan, and re-run for this reflection) governs; if the generator resumes asserting any mechanism-watch status for this desk, treat it as unreliable until a correctly-populated line is observed.
  • Record-keeping, self-caught, unchanged convention: the auto-generated performance/daily_2026-09-23.md again opens "No trade taken today" / Session P&L $0.00 even though its own cumulative line (n=49, +$664.63 net, WR 57.1%) correctly carries cycle 49's realized −$33.11 and reconciles to the ledger to the cent, and today's shared EOD desk-summary inherits it (VESPER | 0 (state)). On an exit day the exit leg books a real trade at 09:31 and cycle 50's position-open is a separate no_trade:position_opened row; the generator's "no trade" framing reads the open row, not the exit. Unchanged generator convention, not a new gap — the trades.csv row is the record. Also unchanged and not a data error: the perf log's SPY daily return prints N/A (a known VESPER-specific generator quirk with no monitor or scoring dependency).
  • Operational: no runner-starvation recurrence. Both trades.csv rows reconcile to the ledger exactly (cycle 49 exit at 09:31:00 on 772.51; cycle 50 position-open at 767.63 / $23,098.17, open_position in state/position_ledger.json matching to the cent). Mechanism watch (GREEN, ~9.6× / ~6.4× floor, n=2190, live as-of today), execution-cost SPRT (CONSISTENT, n=49) and edge SPRT (CONTINUE, n=49) all ran clean.

Desk Summary (orchestrator-facing)

  • VESPER (SPY, unconditional overnight): cycle 49 — the ordinary Tue 09-22 → Wed 09-23 carry (entry 773.54, $23,127.97 notional) — exited this morning at the 09:31 bar open 772.51: a LOSS, −$30.80 gross / −$33.11 net (−13.3154 / −14.3154 bps), an ordinary losing draw at the small end, taken at the same standard 90% as the record +114.89 and every win around it; realized cost 0.9988 bps, roundtrip_shortfall_bps = 0.0, on budget. The temporal exit stepped in front of the day's entire damage: the 09:31 print sat essentially at the day's open (772.83, −0.04%) and +0.5964% above the eventual close (767.93) — the session's −0.59% give-back, driven by the 9:45 flash PMI (58.4) and Barr (10:05) pushing the 10-yr +13.89bp to 5.106% (highest since 2007) and selling the tape tech-led (QQQ −0.84% vs SPY −0.71%, Russell −1.60%), happened entirely while I was flat. Cycle 50 entered tonight at 767.63 ($23,098.17 notional / 30.0902 sh, 90.0% of $25,664.63 equity — the ordinary Wed→Thu carry into 09-24 09:31), held unconditionally, no skip, no sized-down de-risk (rules 4 & 5); the 16:00 auction print sat 3.907 bps below the consolidated close (767.93) — the designed anchor (P27), not a discrepancy. Monitors: realized-cost 0.9988 bps on budget; execution-cost SPRT CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST (n=49, LLR +18.375, flagged: []); edge SPRT CONTINUE (formal-only, not evidence of edge); mechanism watch GREEN — trailing-250 +6.308 / −500 +4.178 vs the 0.655 floor (n=2190 pairs, last exit 2026-09-23; ~9.6× / ~6.4× above), full-sample +4.106, premium intact. Cumulative +$664.63 net over 49 cycles, mean +6.0544 net bps/day vs the 3.151 anchor — ~0.42 SE above, continuing the pre-registered oscillation (not decision-relevant). Plan calibration perfect (Brier 0.0). Binding gate this period: none — neither regime nor calibration; no threshold grazed → no tweak, no TEMPER conversation on any gate.
  • Watching: (1) cycle 50's Thu 09-24 09:31 exit — the ordinary Wed→Thu carry (767.63 entry, held unconditionally at standard size), whose window contains the Xi/summit headline flow, the post-close Meta Connect read-through, and Thursday's 8:30 AM ET claims + New Home Sales printing ~61 minutes before the exit anchor; either branch is one observation. (2) The mechanism watch (trailing-250 +6.308 / −500 +4.178 vs 0.655) — the only number that can ever stop this desk; one small loss moved it toward the floor by a hair and left it ~9.6×/6.4× clear. (3) Whether the EOD generator's mechanism-watch line returns or is corrected — a third consecutive omission (09-21/22/23), already on file as an open item; the direct daily run governs regardless. (4) The realized-cost check — 0.9988 bps again on budget; no breach on record. No skip by design.

Reflection Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-23 (EOD reflection run, 15:38 PDT)
  • Desk-blind rule observed: no other desk's directory read or referenced
  • Next-session event risk (from EOD briefing tomorrow's calendar): MEDIUM — no Tier-1 within the next 7 days (next: PCE Sep 30, NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14; FOMC Minutes Oct 7), but Thu Sep 24 carries US jobless claims 8:30 AM ET and New Home Sales (Aug) 10:00 AM ET, plus the Trump–Xi bilateral session — and the 8:30 releases print inside cycle 50's hold, ~61 minutes before the exit anchor. VESPER's cadence is unaffected regardless: cycle 50 (Wed 09-23 16:00 entry 767.63 → Thu 09-24 09:31) is held unconditionally at standard 90% size (rules 4 & 5) — no skip, no sized-down de-risk, and nothing about today's small loss (or the four wins before it) changes the size of the next trade by a single share.
