Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM. No Tier-1 (Bucket A clear through 09-30; next PCE Sep 30, NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14) and — the operative fact — no US 8:30 AM release, so there is no opening damper and the first hour should form cleanly. The rating rests on two scheduled, known mid-session items and one live policy clock: S&P flash PMI 9:45 ET (est. ~53.6 mfg / ~56.0 svc), Fed Gov. Barr 10:05 ET with the 10-yr ~4.96% and ~even-odds October hike priced, EIA Petroleum Status 10:30 ET (crude consensus −0.600M bbl), a Treasury buyback announcement 11:00 ET, plus Xi's arrival this afternoon and Meta Connect 7:00 PM ET post-close. Firm-wide status GO; both members' hard skips CLEAR (prior VIX close 14.87 < 30; no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE; no mega-cap constituent reporter after prior close — GIS/PAYX/CTAS are pre-open non-constituents, Meta's catalyst is after the close).
  • Session character expected: contained, two-tier, direction unknown — low-range morning, headline chop into the close. This is the briefing's own read and it is the seventh consecutive session of the same refusal case: neither a mild-up default nor a tech-down lean has survived this tape, and yesterday's STUCK-grade AM ("contained, two-tier, direction unknown") was graded correct. There is no mechanical calendar distortion today (Monday's S&P/Nasdaq-100 rebalance is spent) — so a clearance that forms today is evidence of a real program, not the 09-21 rebalance-lifted 0.0013x false-clearance. The day's one genuinely one-way driver is oil: a sixth straight Brent decline, sub-$100, WTI below $90 on Hormuz diplomacy + the Saudi East-West pipeline restart.
  • VIX regime: 14.17 — LOW (<18), and falling (14.87 → 14.21 → 14.17). LOW is the weakest cohort for both members — ECHO's mechanism needs a completed, high-participation program to have something to fade, and SURGE's PF is 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30. Trailing ATRs still carry Monday's 1.9–2.3×-ATR post-rebalance move (SPY ATR14 6.77, QQQ 9.16), but that is trailing elevation, not live range: yesterday's true ranges were 0.37× ATR on SPY and 0.80× ATR on QQQ — a genuinely quiet close-leg tape for the gates to read.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 773.44 (prior range 772.61–775.12; SMA20 765.15 — above; ATR14 6.77). QQQ prior close 747.43 (prior range 740.98–748.31; SMA20 716.70 — above; ATR14 9.16). Both comfortably above their 20-days. XLE has no level in the briefing's authoritative block — the desk's last own print on it is the 09-21 15:30 fill at 62.41 (agents/echo/performance/trades.csv), used as rough context only, never as a trigger. Rates: 10-yr ~4.96%, a push through 5.00% is the leg that would press the AI complex; Brent holding below $100 is the leg that keeps the energy decline one-way.
  • Macro backdrop: AI/semis leadership (Nasdaq's second straight record close, Micron +5%, Asia's semis up again overnight) against a broad tape capped by a near-5% 10-yr and an ~even-odds October hike, with the geopolitical risk premium draining out of crude and a live summit coin-flip — Xi lands today, the main bilateral session is tomorrow.
  • Desk-level consequence: the two members want opposite things from the same tape, and today the day genuinely serves neither well. The shape — narrow leadership, headline chop into the close, sub-ATR closing ranges — is the shape that has produced 15 straight SURGE no-prints and an ECHO gate stack whose binding constraint is vol_ratio. But the one instrument-level exception is real: XLE's driver is one-way, and yesterday XLE's vol_ratio printed 1.180 vs the 1.2 floor (0.02 miss) on a modest −0.93% morning — the closest ECHO has come to a clearance since the gates opened on 09-21. A session with a scheduled sector program (EIA 10:30) inside it is the most plausible route by which a Family 2 mechanism gets a completed program to read today. The honest forecasts, not a hedge: echo p_trade 0.30 / long / med, surge p_trade 0.10 / long / low.

ECHO — dynamic universe (SPY/XLE/XBI baseline; Scanner watchlist supplements), close-leg exhaustion fade at 15:30 ET

Setup present: possible — the first session in weeks with a genuine instrument-level one-way program, and the direction it implies is the one I am allowed to take. p_trade 0.30, direction long, conviction med. This is deliberately above the recent 0.22–0.25 range, for one specific reason: the watchlist qualifies XLE on an intrinsic, same-session catalyst (EIA 10:30) sitting on top of a one-way oil decline, and vol_ratio — my historically binding gate — grazed the floor yesterday at 1.180. That is structure, not optimism; and it is below the 0.35 fire-overshoot I logged on 09-18, because the same discipline applies: a contained LOW-VIX day rarely inflates vol_ratio on its own, and the session character today is contained.

Grading the watchlist's Directional Catalyst Instruments against my gate stack (morning signal ≥ ±0.25%, VWAP persistence, ADX(14, 5-min) ≥ 20, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80) at 10:00 and again at 15:20:

  • XLE — DOWN bias, CLEAR, and today's only mechanism-faithful candidate. Not a "down" trade for me: a down morning is the long fade — the energy driver is weakening (sixth straight Brent decline, sub-$100, WTI below $90), so the fade runs against a completed selling program, not against a strengthening driver. That is the correct side of the 08-10 rule, and it is the exact trade that won on 09-21 (XLE long +$24.03, signal −2.05%, vol_ratio 1.3604, ADX 31.47, exhaustion 2.7924 — the plan-consistent leg). The EIA print at 10:30 is inside the session: it makes a completed sector program more likely (a scheduled flow event with a real volume signature), while also being the thing that can reverse the program mid-day. Pre-committed to the long-XLE path if it clears; refused if the morning signal is up (an up-morning fade would be the 08-10 loss template on a strengthening tape, and an escalation headline that reverses crude intraday is the reverse risk the plan will not take).
  • SPY — no pre-assigned direction, weakest catalyst rating, hard skip CLEAR. A qualification is a short (fade an up-morning). If it clears, the clearance is trustworthy — no rebalance or witching lifting vol_ratio — but SPY on a two-tier day is the instrument most likely to be sub-±0.25% and contested (yesterday +0.04%, blocked at morning_signal; 09-09 −0.24%, a 0.01 miss). Evaluated, not pre-committed.
  • VKTX — UP bias, CLEAR, ECHO-eligible only (~$4.2B cap, below TRIDENT's gate). Genuinely +23.7% pre-market on a dated, issuer-intrinsic PR (VK2735 maintenance topline, Sep 22). Refused as a class, twice over: TEMPER's 2026-07-24 finding (single-stock post-earnings/PR gap-ups reverse within the first ~90 minutes, not across the full 6-hour program cycle) and the fact that a +23.7% gap is a strengthening single-name move, not an exhausted program. A fade here is the 09-15 loss template with a bigger gap.
  • META — unclear/positioning, CLEAR on volume only. The catalyst (Meta Connect 7:00 PM ET) lands after my entry and exit windows. There is no intraday event program to fade and no post-close exposure for me (15:58 hard flat). Not a candidate — headline-risk flag only.
  • XBI — not an active candidate. The watchlist is explicit: no FDA PDUFA dated today (next Sep 27, Sep 30), and VKTX's data is constituent-level, so it does not qualify XBI on the intrinsic-catalyst rule. The xbi_leg sub-book (n=2, WR 0.0%) is carried, not touched; the N=2 vol_ratio calibration flag (09-17 1.120 / 09-18 1.187) clears no N≥3 and gets no new data point today.
  • Pre-open reporters GIS/PAYX/CTAS — refused as a class (TEMPER 2026-07-24: single-stock event gaps complete in the first ~90 minutes, not through the 15:20 gate read). GIS's print is the mildest kind — adjusted EPS $0.75 vs $0.72 with FY27 outlook reaffirmed, not raised — i.e. a sentiment gap with no forward-number change, which is exactly the profile that reverses early, not late.

The honest caution on my best candidate, stated rather than buried. ECHO's own dev history on XLE-on-EIA-Wednesdays is 1 win in 13 (7.7%) in the v3 backtest — the most catalyst-concentrated sessions produced the worst momentum outcomes — and my single live EIA-Wednesday trade (08-19 XBI, is_eia_wed=True) was a −$118.47 stop. I am not using that to refuse the trade (refusal in prose has no code behind it — see the enforcement-gap disclosure below) and I am not using it to lower p_trade, because p_trade is will it fire, not should it. But it is the reason my conviction is med, not high, on a session where the mechanism path is genuinely present: the recorded session-class expectation for this setup is poor even when the gate structure looks right.

Sizing vs. event risk: event risk is MEDIUM but there is no event tail — the 15:58 ET hard flat means nothing survives Barr, the 11:00 buyback, or the afternoon Xi headlines. No event-driven size reduction. Mechanically standard: 0.75% dollar risk per instrument, 2.0% session budget ($500), proportional scaling if combined risk exceeds budget, stop 1.5× ATR, hard flat 15:58 ET. Sizing engages only if a full gate stack clears; with XLE as the likely single firer, this is likely a one-position session.

Candid disclosure — the plan/engine enforcement gap is N=4, 0W/4L, and nothing here is a defense. Same-shaped instances: 08-19 XBI (−$118.47), 08-20 XBI (−$116.84), 09-15 XLE (−$64.98), 09-21 SPY (−$31.43, on the exact 0.0013x rebalance false-clearance the plan predicted). My refusal of the up-morning XLE fade and of the VKTX class are plan notes, not gate logic. p_trade 0.30 is the honest engine-fire estimate, not the plan's preference.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 773.44 prior close, range 772.61–775.12, SMA20 765.15, ATR 6.77. QQQ 747.43, range 740.98–748.31, SMA20 716.70, ATR 9.16. XLE — no authoritative level today; last own print 62.41 (09-21 fill). Brent sub-$100 / WTI below $90 is the XLE driver line; a break back above $100 Brent inverts the whole energy read. 10-yr ~4.96%. The operative read: a down-morning XLE on continued weak crude is the fade I want; an up-morning XLE or an escalation-reversal is the fade I refuse.

Invalidation: stand down entirely if (1) the morning signal is sub-±0.25% on every candidate, or direction flips ≥2 times in the first half hour — the contained two-tier day's modal chop; (2) vol_ratio sub-1.2 at 15:20, ADX < 20, or exhaustion_score < 0.80 — the standard wide block, and today the likeliest branch given the contained character, since yesterday's whole close-leg tape came in at 0.37× ATR (SPY) and 0.80× ATR (QQQ) and gave the exhaustion gates almost nothing to confirm; (3) XLE's morning bias is up (the fade would then be against a strengthening oil tape — the 08-10 loss template, refused); (4) crude reverses back above $100 Brent intraday on an escalation or a hawkish-Barr/rates shock; (5) any VKTX-class single-name gap presents as a fade — refused. The most likely logged reason is vol_ratio (the modal branch) or morning_signal / vwap_persistence on a contained two-tier tape.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — structurally incompatible session. p_trade 0.10, direction long, conviction low.

SURGE is live today (no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE or QQQ mega-cap earnings hard skip fires). The floor-level forecast is a session-character call, not a mechanical skip, and it is the 16th session on the no-print stretch if it fails again. Four reasons, in order:

  1. The session character is the exact one my precondition cannot complete in. A contained, low-range morning with headline chop into the close has no clean trend establishment to begin with, and the modal outcome is the 08-13/09-21 pattern: a leg trend-qualifies, then no VWAP-touch pullback resumes inside the window. That is my chronic binding gate — pullback_resumption — and it is a structural precondition, not a threshold; the 09-05 deliverable already closed the first-hour-floor question by showing that loosening ±0.30% converts none of the near-miss sessions. Yesterday both legs failed it again (SPY blocked at first_hour_signal +0.11%; QQQ trend-qualified at ADX 37.8 and produced no resumption).
  2. The one genuinely one-way driver on today's tape is not in my universe. Oil is one-way down; SPY and QQQ are the two-tier, headline-capped legs. My instruments have the weakest directional supply of anything on the watchlist today.
  3. The events that could generate a pullback sit badly for me. Barr (10:05) and the flash PMI (9:45) land at the front of my window, which is the same "first natural pullback-generator" argument I made yesterday — and yesterday it produced no resumption on either leg. A pullback that fractures the trend rather than retracing it on contracting volume is my documented loss class, not my setup.
  4. LOW VIX (14.17, and falling) is my weakest cohort — PF 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30. My thesis lives in elevated vol, and the regime has gone the wrong way for three sessions running.

Sizing vs. event risk: event risk is MEDIUM but I never carry it — the 14:00 ET hard flat means no print exposure regardless. Standard sizing applies only if a full three-phase structure completes: 0.75% ($187.50), single position, co-fire limiter (stronger |signal_return| between SPY/QQQ wins). No adjustment — and I am explicitly not sizing for a trade I do not expect. There is no VIX skip in my cleared code and I am not adding one; the session-character read is a forecast, not a parameter.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 773.44 prior close, range 772.61–775.12, SMA20 765.15, ATR 6.77. QQQ 747.43, range 740.98–748.31, SMA20 716.70, ATR 9.16 — QQQ is the leading leg (record Nasdaq close, second straight, semis up again in Asia), so if a full structure somehow completes it would call long on QQQ or SPY. The operative level is each leg's session VWAP through the 10:00–12:00 window — a clean reference today (no rebalance, no witching).

Invalidation (the expected outcome, not a contingency): (1) neither leg prints a ±0.30% first-hour impulse — the modal case on a contained, direction-unknown open; (2) a leg trend-qualifies but no VWAP-touch pullback resumes inside the window — the chronic block, and today's most likely outcome; (3) a first-hour drive reverses after the 09:45/10:05 events (price-discovery, not an establishment); (4) Barr fractures rather than retraces. The most likely logged reason is no_signal at first_hour_signal or pullback_resumption — both structural absence, not threshold grazes.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-23 04:40 PDT
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
  • Firm-wide status: GO (event risk MEDIUM, VIX 14.17 LOW regime, regular Wednesday session, EIA Wednesday). No hard skip fires for either member — both live on paper.
  • Desk net forecast: ECHO p_trade 0.30 / long / med, SURGE p_trade 0.10 / long / low.
  • Calibration disclosure, and why the two are not symmetric. ECHO's 0.30 is above the recent 0.22–0.25 range on a concrete basis: an intrinsic same-session sector catalyst (EIA 10:30) on the one instrument whose driver is one-way, plus yesterday's vol_ratio graze at 1.180 vs 1.2. It stays well below a coin flip and below the 09-18 0.35 overshoot because the session character is contained and a contained day rarely inflates vol_ratio — the lesson the 09-18 reflection already taught. SURGE's 0.10 is at the floor for a real reason: the precondition that has blocked 15 consecutive sessions is precisely the one this session character denies, and no loosened threshold converts it. Conviction is med for ECHO and low for SURGE — the asymmetry is the point, not an averaging.
  • Carry: neither stack carries overnight risk — ECHO flat 15:58 ET, SURGE flat 14:00 ET. No Tier-1 event today, so no event tail. Next Tier-1: PCE Sep 30.
  • Carried TEMPER items unchanged and untouched this session: ECHO plan/engine enforcement gap (N=4, 0W/4L, escalated sizing-(b) — gate-level enforcement of plan stand-downs); ECHO XBI vol_ratio floor flag (N=2, incomplete data — flagged, not escalated); ECHO exhaustion_score binding-gate / live-median watch; XBI exclusion review (n=2, not triggered); ECHO's XLE-on-EIA-Wednesday session-class record (dev 1/13 in v3; live n=1 at 08-19, a stop) — noted here as conviction-lowering context, not raised as a new item; SURGE session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation; SURGE ADX 22.0 floor / re-tune watch (moderate-trend 22–30 outperforms strong-trend ≥30 — watch, not an intervention); SURGE event-day skip diagnostic (resolved MIXED); SURGE 2023 PF 0.95 watch. No gate logic modified — nothing in this plan touches a baseline. The EIA-day, contained-session and one-way-oil reads are forecasts, not parameter changes.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-09-23 (Wednesday)

Cadence rule header: Weekly/Friday or same-day-on-trade (WS5). Today is same-day-on-trade — both members logged a real trade, so the desk reflects today. Period covered: 2026-09-22 through 2026-09-23 — the sessions since the 09-21 reflection (09-22 was a full-desk no-print; 09-23 both members traded). ECHO traded 1 (XBI long −$134.52); SURGE traded 1 (QQQ short +$30.45).

Nominal desk net P&L this period: −$104.07 (ECHO −$134.52; SURGE +$30.45).

Plan reference: desks/house-echo/plans/2026-09-23-plan.md EOD briefing: dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-23-eod.md

What Happened

Both members printed for the first time on the same session since early September — and the desk split exactly along its two known seams: SURGE's mechanism worked once the tape finally gave it a structure, and ECHO's engine took the one trade its plan had explicitly declined, into a driver that was strengthening rather than exhausting. The session itself was a single-directional open-high fade driven by a data print (flash PMI 58.4, the hottest since July 2021) plus a hawkish Barr speech 20 minutes later: the 10-yr jumped 13.89bp to 5.106% (biggest one-day move since April 2025), QQQ printed its high at the open (747.12 vs 747.08 open) and ground to 738.25, SPY did the same (773.00 high → 766.50), Energy was the only advancing S&P sector, 72% of issues declined, and the last hour was flat (SPY +0.02%, QQQ +0.07%). Contained on the range axis — SPY 1.00× ATR, QQQ 0.97× ATR, VIX 15.18 LOW — but not directionless. That distinction is the whole day.

  • ECHO traded 1 — the plan-declined instrument, not the plan's path. XBI long 320 sh @ 155.95 (15:30), stop 155.5296 (1.5× ATR, ATR 0.2802), stopped at 15:40, −$134.52. Morning signal −0.93% (short bias) → the contra long. Gates: vol_ratio 2.017 (the ≥1.5 tier — the strongest participation tier), ADX 26.84, exhaustion_score 1.8815, notional $49,904, one instrument in the session, is_eia_wed=True. My plan had pre-committed to the long XLE path and listed XBI as "not an active candidate" (no FDA PDUFA today — next Sep 27 / Sep 30). The EOD reports XLE did not fill (vol_ratio gate). So the instrument selection was the engine's, not the plan's, and the trade it chose was the one my own 08-10 rule says to refuse: fading a strengthening driver. XBI's −0.93% first half hour was part of a rates-shock liquidation, not a completed program, and the fade ran straight into it.
  • SURGE traded 1 — the print its plan said not to expect, and it won. QQQ short 29 sh @ 740.51 (11:45), stop 741.79, HARD_FLAT 14:00 @ 740.30, +$30.45. First-hour signal −0.60%, ADX 26.05, retrace 42.1% (a genuine VWAP-touch pullback), resumption at 11:45 — a complete three-phase structure, inside the window. This ends the 15-session no-print stretch since the 08-31 stop-out and is the correct side of the day's tech-led decline (QQQ −0.84% vs SPY −0.71%; Nasdaq −1.13% vs Dow −0.68%). My forecast was p_trade 0.10 / direction long — the fire estimate was wrong (Brier 0.81, my worst) and the direction sign was wrong.

Self-critique — the desk's shared market read was right about shape and wrong about every direction inside it. The plan's character call ("contained, two-tier, direction unknown") held: both legs were sub-1.3× ATR and the tape refused direction at the index level until 15:20. But the two directional anchors the desk plan assigned both inverted: (1) it named the AI/semis leadership leg plus a one-way oil decline as the desk's persistent edge, and the session delivered the mirror image — tech was the weak leg (Nasdaq worst major, −1.13%) and Brent reversed hard, +3.3% back above $100 to ~$103, snapping a six-session losing streak. The plan had written down the Brent-$100 reversal as its own framing-flip trigger and as ECHO invalidation (4); it fired, and the desk still ended the day with a contra-long on (XBI) count. (2) Both members' direction: long frontmatter calls were anchored to the pre-market tilt, and the session closed mildly down with tech leading — SURGE's sign was simply wrong, and ECHO's was right only because the engine's contra rule made a short morning into a long trade on an instrument the plan had ruled out. The forecast layer was honest; the mechanism layer was exposed.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

ECHO — binding gate: none (the stack cleared); the binding failure is the plan/engine enforcement gap at N=5, and today it is calibration, not regime

Today inverts the desk's dominant story of the last six weeks. ECHO did not need to be blocked — a full gate stack cleared at 15:20 (vol_ratio 2.017, ADX 26.84, exhaustion 1.8815) — and the trade the engine took was on an instrument my plan had removed from the candidate list in prose. That makes today the 5th same-shaped instance of the plan/engine enforcement gap: 08-19 XBI short (−$118.47), 08-20 XBI long (−$116.84), 09-15 XLE short (−$64.98), 09-21 SPY short (−$31.43), 09-23 XBI long (−$134.52). 0W/5L. Three of the five cost money. The 09-15 learnings entry already crossed the N≥3 calibration bar and the 2026-09 Desk Review sized it sizing-(b) (gate-level enforcement of plan stand-downs); today is the fifth instance and the largest single loss in the sequence.

The mechanism reading is the part worth keeping. XBI's morning program was a strengthening risk-off driver — hawkish flash PMI at 9:45, Barr at 10:05, a 13.89bp 10-yr breakout, Russell −1.60%, 72% of issues declined — and ECHO's rule faded it contra. That is the 08-10 loss template in a new driver class (macro rates shock), and it is exactly the side my plan's own 08-10 rule refuses. The plan said so in prose ("refused as a class", "invalidation (4)"); nothing in the gate logic says so. Note also that the gate stack's strongest participation reading — the vol_ratio ≥1.5 tier, which the cleared strategy treats as the highest-quality cohort — was awarded precisely to a one-way liquidation in which sellers were accelerating, not completing, at 15:20. Regime or calibration? Calibration, for the enforcement gap (5 same-shaped, 0W/5L, plan-intent vs. gate-logic, no threshold involved). The vol_ratio-tier question is a watch at N=1, not evidence.

Not a grazed floor, and the 09-22 near-miss confirms it. Yesterday's XLE block was vol_ratio 1.180 vs 1.2 — a 0.02 miss, the third consecutive week XLE has grazed that floor, and the plan forecast 0.25 (correctly no-trade, Brier 0.0625). The 09-05 deliverable already showed those grazes do not convert at floors 1.05/1.10 because exhaustion_score binds independently. Today sharpens the same point from the other side: when the gate stack did clear, the instrument it cleared on was the one the plan had excluded on a calendar basis (no PDUFA), the same calendar-anchored-not-mechanism- anchored exclusion TEMPER flagged on 08-20. No gate touched.

SURGE — binding gate: none (three-phase structure completed); pullback_resumption was the block for 15 sessions and today it released — regime, now with a counter-instance

15th straight session was a no-print; today broke it. QQQ trend-qualified down (first-hour −0.60%), retraced 42.1% into VWAP, and resumed at 11:45 — textbook three-phase, ADX 26.05, HARD_FLAT 14:00 for +$30.45. Two structural notes:

  1. The catalyst day is what made the structure. The 9:45 flash PMI and the 10:05 Barr speech were the front-of-window events the plan feared would "fracture rather than retrace." They did the opposite: the decline began mechanically at the 9:45 print and gave the cleanest establishment → controlled retrace → resumption the strategy has seen since 08-31. This is a counter-instance to the standing session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation (the 07-24 finding that catalyst-driven sessions are price-discovery, not establishment — then 0W/2L). N=1, so it closes nothing; it does mean the filter conversation should not be advanced on the old two-loss sample alone.
  2. Moderate-trend ADX, not strong-trend. Today's ADX 26.05 sits inside the 22–30 band that the supplemental breakdown found outperforms ADX ≥30 (PF 2.14 vs 1.65), and it won. The two prior strong-trend qualifications in the stretch (09-21: ADX 54.9 SPY / 71.0 QQQ) produced no pullback at all. The ADX re-tune watch gains a live data point in its own favor — still a watch, not an intervention. Today's win also came in VIX 15.18 LOW, SURGE's weakest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 at 20–30) — n=1 counter-evidence, logged, not acted on.

Regime — the precondition was structurally unmet for 15 sessions, then met once. No fix, no gate change, no TEMPER threshold conversation. The plan's p_trade 0.10 was wrong in the honest direction: a session-character forecast is not a substitute for reading the structure that actually forms, and today a mechanical data print did the establishing the plan said wouldn't exist.

Narrative finding: the desk's forecast layer and its enforcement layer are now visibly separated. The forecasts this period were honest and mostly well-calibrated at the p_trade level (ECHO 0.30 → traded, direction hit, Brier 0.49; SURGE 0.10 → traded, Brier 0.81 — its worst, and honestly so), while the two things that actually decided the desk's P&L were (a) a plan-declined instrument being traded against a strengthening driver, and (b) a session class the plan had written off delivering a textbook structure. Both are plan-narrative vs. engine-behavior gaps, and neither is visible in Brier or the direction-hit column.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • ECHO — plan/engine enforcement gap: N=5, 0W/5L, three cost money. 08-19 XBI (−$118.47), 08-20 XBI (−$116.84), 09-15 XLE (−$64.98), 09-21 SPY (−$31.43), 09-23 XBI (−$134.52). Already escalated (N≥3 crossed in the 09-15 learnings entry) and sized sizing-(b) by the 2026-09 Desk Review. Today adds the largest single loss in the sequence and the second instance where the plan-declined instrument was declined on a calendar basis rather than a driver basis. No live gate modified.
  • ECHO — xbi_leg sub-book: n=3, WR 0.0%, PF 0.0. Exclusion review trigger is WR < 50% over 15+ live trades, so not triggered — but all three losses are plan-declined-then-traded instances, so the sub-book is currently measuring the enforcement gap more than it is measuring XBI.
  • ECHO — EIA-Wednesday session class: now 0-for-2 live (08-19 XBI −$118.47; 09-23 XBI −$134.52), against a dev record of 1 win in 13 (7.7%). Carried as context, not a new item — but N=2 live with the same sign is worth the next checkpoint's attention.
  • ECHO — vol_ratio ≥1.5-tier discrimination watch (N=1): the strongest participation reading of the week was awarded to a rates-shock liquidation that continued rather than exhausted. Logged, not escalated; needs more shock-day samples.
  • ECHO — exhaustion_score binding-gate / live-median watch: today's clear was 1.8815, against a dev median of 1.952. Sample is still far from the 40-trade validation point; the 09-08/09-15 non-discrimination caveat (the composite does not separate the 09-15 loss from the wins) is unchanged.
  • SURGE — session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation: open, carried, with a counter-instance attached. Today's winning structure was created by the 9:45 data print the plan feared. Do not advance the filter on the old 0W/2L catalyst-gap sample alone.
  • SURGE — ADX 22.0 floor / ADX re-tune watch: gains a data point in its own favor. The 09-23 win qualified at ADX 26.05 (moderate band); the two strongest qualifications of the stretch (09-21: 54.9 / 71.0) produced no pullback at all. Watch, not an intervention.
  • SURGE — first-hour floor question: closed (09-05 deliverable); unchanged, no new graze today (QQQ cleared its impulse cleanly at −0.60%).
  • SURGE — event-day skip diagnostic (resolved MIXED 2026-08-01) and 2023 PF 0.95 watch: carried, no new data.
  • Plan-scoring note (desk-level, for score_plans.py): both of today's metrics are structurally blind to what happened. ECHO shows traded=1, direction_hit=1 for a trade its plan had declined, on an instrument its plan had excluded — the instrument-selection divergence is invisible to Brier. SURGE shows direction_hit=0 on a winning trade, because its mechanism resolves direction from the observed first-hour impulse at evaluation time rather than from a pre-committed sign. The p_trade and direction columns measure the plan's narrative, not the engine's selection.

Learnings Flags (desk-blind)

Flag for learnings.md: house-echo / ECHO — the plan-level stand-down gap reaches N=5 same-shaped instances, 0W/5L, three costing money (08-19 XBI −$118.47, 08-20 XBI −$116.84, 09-15 XLE −$64.98, 09-21 SPY −$31.43, 09-23 XBI −$134.52). The 09-23 instance adds two new pieces of evidence: (a) the engine traded an instrument the plan had removed from the candidate list on a calendar basis (no FDA PDUFA) while the plan's own pre-committed path (long XLE) blocked at vol_ratio — the same calendar-anchored-not-mechanism-anchored exclusion class flagged on 08-20; and (b) the fade ran against a strengthening macro driver (hawkish flash PMI 58.4 + Barr, 10-yr +13.89bp to 5.106%, Russell −1.60%, 72% of issues down) while the gate stack awarded its strongest participation reading (vol_ratio 2.017, the ≥1.5 tier). The plan's own 08-10 driver rule and its invalidation (4) (Brent back above $100 — which fired) would have refused the trade; both are prose, not gate logic. This is the evidence a gate-level enforcement of plan stand-downs conversation should cite.

Flag for learnings.md: house-echo / SURGE — the 15-session pullback_resumption stretch ended on a macro-data-print day: the 9:45 flash PMI generated a mechanical, single-directional establishment (QQQ first-hour −0.60%), a 42.1% VWAP-touching retrace, and a resumption at 11:45, ADX 26.05, +$30.45. This is a counter-instance to the catalyst-gap / session-character filter hypothesis (which rested on 0W/2L catalyst-gap losses), and the win landed in the moderate-trend ADX 22–30 band the supplemental breakdown found outperforms strong-trend, while the two strongest qualifications of the stretch (09-21: ADX 54.9 / 71.0) produced no pullback at all. N=1 — the conversation should not be advanced on the old sample alone, and no gate was touched.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Desk-cadence reflection for 2026-09-22 → 2026-09-23 — desk net −$104.07. ECHO traded 1: XBI long −$134.52 (plan-declined instrument; engine's IOU — the pre-committed XLE path blocked at vol_ratio), stopped 10 minutes in against a strengthening rates-shock driver while awarding the vol_ratio ≥1.5 tier; cumulative −$290.45 (n=13, 46.2%, SPRT CONTINUE). Load-bearing verdict: calibration — the plan/engine enforcement gap is now N=5, 0W/5L, three cost money, and xbi_leg is n=3 / WR 0.0% (review trigger at 15+ not reached). SURGE traded 1: QQQ short +$30.45 (first print in 15 sessions, ADX 26.05, 42.1% retrace) — cumulative +$513.43, SPRT CONTINUE, +1.384 from CONSISTENT; direction: long was wrong on a winning trade (mechanism resolves direction at eval time), forecast p_trade 0.10 → Brier 0.81. The desk's shared read was right on containment and wrong on both assigned directions (tech was the weak leg; Brent reclaimed $100 — the plan's own flip trigger). Both stacks flat at their hard-flat times; next Tier-1 PCE Sep 30, Sep 24 carries claims + New Home Sales + the Trump–Xi bilateral. Two flags filed for learnings.md (ECHO enforcement N=5; SURGE catalyst-day counter-instance + moderate-ADX win).
