Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-22-pm.md PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — this plan covers active members Null + Meridian only)

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — but NOT a Tier-1 for either member, so neither member's event gate fires. Bucket A is clear through 2026-09-29 (next Tier-1: PCE Sep 30, then NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14); FOMC Minutes Oct 7, next decision Oct 28. The only domestic release is the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index (10:00 AM ET, second-tier) — there is no 8:30 AM print. The MEDIUM rating comes from two live, unhiddable vectors: (1) a heavy Fedspeak slate in a hawkish regime — Hammack 8:50 AM, then the Williams (permanent voter) + Barr + Paulson cluster at 10:05–10:10 AM, Barkin 1:00 PM, Hammack again 2:00 PM — with long-end yields already near multi-decade highs (10-yr ~4.95–4.97%, 30-yr ~5.28%) after Chair Warsh's Sep 16 hike; (2) the geopolitical/diplomatic clock — Trump addresses the UN General Assembly today with a possible Iran sideline meeting, oil is whipsawing two-way around $100 Brent on Hormuz-reopening headlines vs. Trump's Iran warnings, and the Trump–Xi summit is Wednesday Sep 24. Firm-wide trade status GO — no Tier-1, VIX LOW, normal Tuesday session. The 10:05–10:10 AM Fed cluster lands inside both members' windows (Null 9:30–10:30, Meridian 9:30–12:00) — that is the day's structural fact for this desk.
  • Session character expected: Contained, two-tier, direction unknown. Pre-market is a gap-up bias, tech-led (S&P futures up modestly, Nasdaq-100 futures up more, semis among the leaders) on the carried AI-optimism bid (Meta's post-Muse read-through into Intel/Arm/AMD/Astera), against a broad tape capped by oil >$100 and long-end yields pushing higher again. The briefing refuses to pre-assign a one-day polarity on a Fedspeak/geopolitical coin-flip day, and I am not inventing one to make the desk's story tidier. Note the range context that matters to both members: yesterday (09-21) was a genuine big day — QQQ +2.78%, SPY +1.56%, both ~1.9–2.3× ATR, tech-led — so trailing ATR is elevated and wider-than-average ranges are likely to persist.
  • VIX regime: 14.81 (LOW, <18) — down a hair from the prior close 14.87. LOW-VIX is the historically favorable cohort for this desk (Null's backtest WR 80.1% in the <18 bucket; Meridian's edge concentrated in the same regime). Cohort logic runs today — but VIX level gates neither mechanism, so it is a tailwind note, not a signal.
  • Key levels:
  • QQQ: prior close 741.41 (Null's gap-fill target), prior-day range 727.84 – 743.22 (range 15.38 — a very wide, trend-day prior session), prior high 743.22 (Meridian's sweep level), 20-day SMA 714.65 (above SMA20, by 3.74%), ATR(14) 9.50. Null's in-band gap band: ±0.95 to ±6.65 pts (0.9% of price); its tiny-gap (< 0.30×) window is ±2.85 pts (0.38%).
  • SPY: prior close 773.52, prior-day range 766.04 – 774.89 (range 8.85), prior high 774.89 (Meridian's sweep level), 20-day SMA 764.65 (above SMA20, by 1.16%), ATR(14) 7.12.
  • IWM: no briefing price block; Meridian marks its sweep level (prior high) at the open. 20-day average range ~2.9 → 1.25× ceiling ≈ 3.6 (refreshes today).
  • Pre-market: no QQQ/SPY print at 07:00 ET (thin IEX) — the futures read is the only directional proxy, and it is a modest up-bias, not the +1% bid of yesterday. Confirm the actual gap at the cash open; on this desk the open print is the one number that matters most.
  • Macro backdrop: one sentence — a firm-wide GO on a macro-silent Tuesday whose real risk is a Fedspeak/geopolitical headline clock, with a modestly firmer tech-led open sitting on top of an already-extended trend day — and both our fade mechanisms are pointed against that bid, each facing a different, concrete structural binder (Null: the gap-size band and the trend-alignment filter, on a tape whose previous two cash opens printed 0.244× and 0.786×; Meridian: a decisive volatility-gate block plus an ADX far outside the band after yesterday's trend day).
  • Desk-wide headline-risk assessment (explicit, because MEDIUM is a rating gap, not structure): neither stack has a Fedspeak or headline gate and I am adding none — no gate changes, no invented filters, for either member. The 10:05–10:10 AM cluster sits inside both windows, so the honest treatment is on the forecast and on sizing: both calls are priced low, both run standard size (a MEDIUM headline day is a reason for standard size, never conviction size), and any signal that fires into or out of that cluster is lower-quality than the same signal on a quiet tape. Null's 09:30–10:30 window is partial mitigation; Meridian's kill zone spans the cluster with none.

Null — QQQ (gap fade / FVG; MNQ proxy, gap measured at the cash open)

Setup present: POSSIBLE, not likely. The binder is the GAP-SIZE band first, then the TREND-ALIGNMENT filter — and the whole call reduces to how big the cash-open gap is. p_trade 0.25, direction short, conviction low. Null's event gate is clean (no Tier-1; is_event_day(trade_date, tier_filter=2) returns clean) and the mega-cap earnings filter is also clean — today's pre-open names (AZO, THO, MLKN, HERE) and the after-close KBH are not QQQ top-10 constituents (AAPL/NVDA/MSFT/AMZN/GOOGL/META/TSLA/AVGO/COST/NFLX), and Meta Connect is Sep 23–24, not an earnings release. A live, tradeable session.

  1. The band arithmetic (ATR 9.50, prior close 741.41). In-band gap = 0.95–6.65 pts (0.9% of price); the tiny-gap relaxation window (< 0.30× ATR, which suspends the trend filter) = ≤ 2.85 pts (0.38%). - Tradeable: a gap-down long if QQQ opens in [734.76, 740.46] (in-band gap-down below prior close); or a tiny gap-up short if it opens in (741.41, 744.26] (below 0.30× — the relaxation path, and the one that fired 09-18). - Blocked: open in (740.46, 741.41) (sub-floor, < 0.10×), (744.26, 748.06) (in-band but ≥ 0.30× on a gap-up above the SMA — the trend filter refuses it by rule), ≥ 748.06 (oversize, > 0.70×), or < 734.76 (oversize the other way).
  2. The tape's recent cash opens say the base case is a block, not a fire. Null's last two live-eligible sessions printed 09-18 0.244× (fired, +$84.40) and 09-21 0.786× (oversize block) — i.e. the oversize regime that ran 09-01→09-17 reasserted immediately after the one in-band break. The ATR has risen 8.49 → 9.50, so yesterday's same absolute gap now reads 0.703× — still above the ceiling. A repeat of the same AI-bid magnitude tomorrow-morning is a block by ~0.00x, and a modest up-gap of +0.3–0.5% (2.2–3.7 pts = 0.23–0.39×) sits exactly on the 0.30 boundary: just below 744.26 it is a live tiny-gap short, just above it the trend filter refuses it. That knife-edge — not a broad opportunity — is why this is priced 0.25 and not higher.
  3. The pre-market volume filter is a genuine third path to a stand-down. After a +2.78% AI-led day, pre-market NQ/ES volume running > 2× the prior 5-day average indicates institutional commitment to the gap direction and independently stands the session down (no_trade:premarket_volume). Treat that as a live outcome today, not a formality.
  4. Direction, if it fires, is short — the plausible qualifying path is the tiny gap-up fade. A gap-down long is possible but contrary to the pre-market read. Per the standing forecast-model correction (08-17): tiny gaps are trend-agnostic and both directions stay live — p_trade must not collapse on the SMA20 side alone. The forecast is therefore about occurrence, not about the SMA20.

Sizing vs event risk: standard — 1 MNQ, 0.5% risk, one position at a time, 11:00 ET hard exit. No changes. Not upsized on the LOW-VIX cohort, and not upsized on a MEDIUM headline day: the 10:05–10:10 AM Fed cluster lands inside Null's 9:30–10:30 window, so a signal forming near it is headline-exposed in a way a quiet tape's is not. That is a sizing statement, not a new filter — Null's cleared rule set has no Fedspeak skip and I am not inventing one here.

Key levels: QQQ prior close 741.41 (fill target), prior high 743.22, prior low 727.84, SMA20 714.65 (price 3.74% above), ATR(14) 9.50; in-band gap 0.95–6.65 pts; tiny window ≤ 2.85 pts; tradeable open zone [734.76, 740.46] ∪ (741.41, 744.26].

Invalidation / stand-down: stand down if the cash-open gap prints ≥ 0.70× ATR (≥ 6.65 pts, open ≥ ~748.1) — the population v2 excludes, and the shape yesterday's open took; or < 0.10× ATR (open 740.46–741.41) — no edge; or in-band but ≥ 0.30× on a gap-up above the SMA (open 744.26–748.06) — refused by the trend filter by rule; or pre-market volume > 2× its 5-day average. The 11:00 ET hard exit is unchanged. A block is the base case today — no_trade:gap_size / no_trade:trend_filter are not near-misses.

Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=15 W14/L1, LLR +2.461, cumulative +$1,965.99, WR 93.3%. First-loss watch stays N=1 (the 09-03 trend-day fade remains un-clustered — no filter conversation until same-shaped losses reach N ≥ 3). No tweak.

Meridian — QQQ/SPY/IWM (kill-zone prior-high sweep + RSI(2) ≥ 88, bearish only)

No trade expected — the VOLATILITY GATE blocks decisively, on every leg, off yesterday's trend day; and the ADX band would block what survived it. p_trade 0.05, direction short (mechanically — the stack is bearish-only), conviction low.

  1. The volatility gate is the binding gate today, and it is not a graze. The gate compares the prior day's range to 1.25× its 20-day average. The prior day was a genuine trend day: QQQ range 15.38 against an estimated ceiling of ≈ 9.2 (≈ 1.67× the ceiling), SPY 8.85 against ≈ 6.2 (≈ 1.43× the ceiling), with IWM's ceiling ≈ 3.6 and yesterday's small-cap range unavailable in the briefing but certainly not small on a +1.56% SPY day. This is the widest volatility block since the gate last bound (09-14: QQQ prior_range 10.21 vs 8.14 ceiling), and unlike the 09-18/09-21 clears it cannot be argued around: the numbers are 40–70% past the ceiling, not near it. (Ceilings are my arithmetic off the engine's own recent avg_range reads — 6.81 QQQ / 4.72 SPY as of 09-17 rolled forward with 09-18's 6.54/4.02 and 09-21's 15.38/8.85; the engine's own precheck value governs at the open.)
  2. Even if a leg cleared volatility, ADX blocks it. Yesterday's precheck read QQQ 42.5 / SPY 45.0 — far above the 32 ceiling. Per the standing desk learning (07-24): a 14-period smoothed ADX more than ~10% above the ceiling cannot decay back into an 18–32 band within a single session. A +2.78% trend day's ADX does not reset overnight. So the two independent gates stack against QQQ and SPY, and IWM is the only leg with any residual path — and its ceiling (~3.6) is the tightest of the three.
  3. The sweep geometry is moot today but the near-miss series is worth the record. Yesterday IWM printed sweep_chain sweeps=10, rsi_reject=10, max_rsi2=84.2 vs 88 — a 3.8-point exhaustion miss, the closest approach this stack has had, against 09-18's QQQ double-sweep at max_rsi2 11.1 and the 08-17/08-10 cluster (80.0, 73.0/78.4). The standing read holds and is now reinforced: sweep completion + RSI(2) ≥ 88 exhaustion is the binding gate, not the ADX band, not the volatility gate — the sweeps are forming on bid tapes, the exhaustion is not. That is a carry-forward watch, not a reason to touch a threshold: the 88 line is cleared-parameter territory and only TEMPER can move it.
  4. What a trade would require today is near-impossible, and I say so plainly rather than dressing it up: a leg whose prior day was unusually contained (none was), inside ADX 18–32 (no leg is), producing an up-push into its prior high with RSI(2) ≥ 88 and a bearish 1-min FVG retrace within 15 minutes — while a Fedspeak cluster fires at 10:05–10:10. There is no fifth path.

Sizing vs event risk: standard — $250/leg, caps 10 MNQ / 5 MES / 5 M2K, 2-loss daily cap, hard close 11:30 ET. No changes. Nothing here licenses size: a blocked book is not a reason to size up when it unblocks, and a MEDIUM headline day is not a reason to size down from a standard that already assumes normal conditions. iwm_leg remains n=0 — honest live anchor ~56%, not the 73.3% headline.

Key levels: QQQ prior high 743.22 / SPY prior high 774.89 (sweep thresholds); IWM sweep level marked at the open. ADX band 18–32 (yesterday's read far above it). Volatility ceilings ≈ 9.2 QQQ / 6.2 SPY / 3.6 IWM (1.25× the 20-day average range). ATR(14) QQQ 9.50 / SPY 7.12 → the 2.0× ATR(5m) stop, and the same-sign guard voids any malformed stop.

Invalidation / stand-down: stand down (as expected) if the volatility gate blocks the legs at the precheck — the base case on all three — or ADX lands outside 18–32 on whatever clears it, or the tape never produces a close-back-below-bar with RSI(2) ≥ 88. The 11:30 ET hard close is unchanged. On this tape volatility / adx_precheck are the expected blocking gates, not near-misses — I do not turn a trend-day follow-through into a trade the rules do not authorize.

Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=3 W2/L1, LLR +0.222, cumulative +$385.22, WR 66.7%; spy_leg n=1 WR 100%; iwm_leg n=0. Standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. No tweak.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-22 (pre-market, 04:45 PT / 07:45 ET)
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for active members only (Null, Meridian): yes. Wicker (PM): strategy retired 2026-07-14 (WS2c Tier-2 NO-GO) — no plan, no forecast, no per-member file; persona continues desk oversight only.
  • Firm-wide GO; event risk MEDIUM (no Tier-1 through Sep 29 — next PCE Sep 30 — but a heavy hawkish Fedspeak slate plus an active UNGA/Iran/Trump–Xi clock, with the 10:05–10:10 AM cluster inside both members' windows). Both active members' Tier-1 event gates are clean. Null p_trade 0.25 / direction short / conviction low; Meridian p_trade 0.05 / direction short / conviction low.
  • The two calls are deliberately far apart, because the two stacks are in genuinely different positions today. Null's session is live but knife-edged — the band's tiny-gap window is only ±0.38% wide, yesterday's gap magnitude would now read 0.70× and block, and the whole call is whether the cash open lands below 744.26. Meridian's session is structurally closed — the volatility gate blocks 40–70% past its ceiling on QQQ/SPY and the ADX band would block the remainder, so this is the desk's clearest "no trade expected" in weeks and I have priced it at 0.05 rather than hiding behind a mid-probability number.
  • Headline-risk note: no gate changes and no invented filters for either member. MEDIUM is a rating gap (Tier-1 clear, headline risk live) — it is absorbed as standard size, not as a plan-level stand-down, and not as a new Fedspeak gate.
  • Reconfirmation ledger: no open item gates today. Meridian IWM expansion CLOSED 2026-08-20 (strategy_v7); standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. Wicker's feed/session re-run remains the desk's highest-priority open reconfirmation (unchanged, not a today blocker).
  • Carried watch: Null needs the cash-open QQQ below ~744.3 (tiny-gap short) or 734.8–740.5 (in-band gap-down long) for a tradeable gap, and pre-market volume ≤ 2× its 5-day average; Meridian needs a leg that is not post-trend-day (contained prior range) with ADX inside 18–32 and a genuine RSI(2) ≥ 88 exhaustion push into its prior high — yesterday's IWM 84.2 vs 88 is the closest the exhaustion gate has come and the number to keep watching.
