Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM. No Tier-1 event (Bucket A clear through 09-29; next PCE Sep 30, NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14) and no 8:30 AM print — the only release is the second-tier Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index (10:00 ET). The MEDIUM rating rests on two live, un-scheduled vectors instead: (1) a heavy hawkish Fedspeak slate — Hammack 8:50, Williams (permanent voter) + Barr + Paulson clustered 10:05–10:10, Barkin 1:00, Hammack again 2:00 — with long-end yields already near multi-decade highs (10-yr ~4.95–4.97%, 30-yr ~5.28%) after Warsh's Sep 16 hike; and (2) the geopolitical/diplomatic clock — Trump addresses the UN General Assembly today with a possible Iran sideline meeting, oil whipsawing two-way around $100 Brent, and the Trump–Xi summit Wed Sep 24. Firm-wide trade status GO; both members' hard skips CLEAR (prior VIX close 14.81 < 30; no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE; no mega-cap constituent reporter after prior close — AZO/THO are pre-open non-constituents, KBH is after today's close).
  • Session character expected: mixed / two-tier, direction unknown — contained. Pre-market is a gap-up bias, tech-led (S&P futures up modestly, Nasdaq-100 up more, semis among leaders) on the carried AI-optimism bid. The briefing is explicit that the day's live risk is a policy/rates/geopolitical coin-flip, that direction past the open is not cleanly pre-assignable, and that the honest call is contained, two-tier, direction unknown — the refusal, not a lean, is the correct posture. The cleanest intraday structure is expected in the morning window; headline-driven chop is expected into the afternoon (the 10:05–10:10 Fed cluster, the oil tape on UNGA headlines, a 1:00 PM + 2:00 PM Fedspeak double-header).
  • Structural difference from yesterday, stated plainly: the S&P 500 / Nasdaq-100 quarterly rebalance was effective prior to Monday's open — it is now a spent day-1 residual, not a live index-flow catalyst. There is no mechanical calendar distortion on today's tape the way there was yesterday. This matters directly for both members: yesterday's plans had to reason about mechanisms reading corrupted inputs (rebalance-rotated open and VWAP, mechanically-lifted vol_ratio); today there is no such corruption, so a clearance that forms today is more likely to be a genuine program than yesterday's marginal one. The forecast stays low anyway — not because of input corruption, but because the day's direction is a coin-flip.
  • VIX regime: 14.81 — LOW (<18). LOW is the weakest cohort for both members: ECHO's mechanism needs a completed, high-participation directional program to have something to fade, and SURGE's PF is 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30. But the tape is not contained/sub-ATR: trailing ATR is still elevated off Monday's ~1.9–2.3×‑ATR tech-led move (SPY ATR14 7.12, QQQ ATR14 9.50), so wider-than-average ranges should persist. That is the one feature that keeps ECHO's fire probability off the floor.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 773.52 (prior range 766.04–774.89; SMA20 764.65 — well above; ATR14 7.12). QQQ prior close 741.41 (prior range 727.84–743.22; SMA20 714.65 — well above; ATR14 9.50). XLE on two-way crude around $100 Brent (UNGA/Iran/Hormuz headline channel). 10-yr ~4.95–4.97% near multi-decade highs — a push toward 5.00% is the live rates leg that would press the AI complex.
  • Macro backdrop: a tug-of-war between AI optimism and macro headwinds — a hawkish Fed (first hike since 2023, more priced), long-end yields near multi-decade highs, and oil above $100 — with the diplomatic week (UNGA today, Trump–Xi Wednesday) as the live two-way tail. Neither member is exposed to the overnight event tail (ECHO flat 15:58 ET, SURGE flat 14:00 ET).
  • Desk-level consequence: today offers no mechanical edge-of-calendar distortion and no threshold to graze — the question for both Family 2 expressions is purely does a real directional program form, and does the specific structural precondition complete. For ECHO, the elevated-ATR regime makes a genuine completed program more plausible than on a contained LOW-VIX tape, but a two-tier tape mutes index-level direction (leadership is narrow in AI/semis while the broad tape is capped by rates/energy), and the day's leadership leg — the AI complex — is a strengthening driver ECHO is pre-committed not to fade (the 08-10 loss template). For SURGE, a gap-up tech-led open with no rebalance rotation is the cleanest first-hour establishment in weeks, and the 10:05–10:10 Fedspeak cluster sits inside its 10:00–12:00 window as the first natural pullback-generator in a while — but a one-way gap-up drive (the modal case, cf. yesterday's +2.78% QQQ) denies the measured pullback, which is exactly the block that has produced 14 straight no-trades. Honest forecasts, not a hedge: echo p_trade 0.25 / short / low, surge p_trade 0.15 / long / low.

ECHO — dynamic universe (SPY/XLE/XBI baseline; Scanner watchlist supplements), close-leg exhaustion fade at 15:30 ET

Setup present: unlikely-to-possible. p_trade 0.25, direction short, conviction low.

My mechanism needs a gate-confirmed directional program that ran all day and is substantially complete by 15:20, then fades it contra at 15:30. Today the input-validity objection that dominated yesterday is gone — there is no rebalance distorting the open, the VWAP, or vol_ratio. What replaces it is a direction problem, not an input problem: on a Fedspeak/geopolitical coin-flip day the morning direction is genuinely unknown, and my fade is only as good as the program it fades. Grading the watchlist's Directional Catalyst Instruments against my gate stack (morning signal ≥ ±0.25%, VWAP persistence, ADX(14, 5-min) ≥ 20, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80):

  • SPY — Long bias (weak program), hard skip CLEAR. A qualification is a short (fade an up-morning). Crucially, today a vol_ratio clear would be trustworthy — no rebalance mechanical lift, so a clearance is evidence of real participation, not the 09-21 marginal false-clearance (SPY 1.2013 vs the 1.2 floor, 0.0013x). The objection is directional: SPY is a broad two-tier tape whose up-drive is being carried by a narrow AI/semis leadership while the broad leg is capped by rates and energy — so the morning signal may be contested and sub-±0.25%, and even a clean up-morning is a fade into the leadership leg. Evaluated, not pre-committed.
  • QQQ — Long bias, hard skip CLEAR, the cleaner of the two broad candidates for a fade. Nasdaq-100 futures lead and QQQ printed a record close Monday above its 20-day. Same shape as SPY: a qualification is a short fade of an up-morning — but QQQ is the AI-heavy leg, so fading it sits closest to my pre-committed driver-fade refusal below. Evaluated, not pre-committed.
  • XLE — Two-way (down on diplomacy, spikes on escalation), hard skip CLEAR. Not an EIA Wednesday, so this is pure headline-driven two-way, not a completed institutional program — a supply-restoration headline is not program completion, and an escalation headline spiking crude intraday would reverse a fade mid-program with UNGA live in the same window. Evaluated, not pre-committed.
  • AI-semi / AI-infra complex (INTC, AMD, AVGO, ARM, ALAB, MU) — Long bias, CLEAR. REFUSED as a class. A sector in a live extending bid is a strengthening driver; fading the driver's own strengthening sector is my pre-committed 08-10 loss template (09-15 XLE short −$64.98, stopped in 25 minutes with the complex still rising). exhaustion_score did not discriminate that loss (1.6913) from my 09-08 win (1.7405), so the composite gives me no cover. INTC is the driver itself, not a fade candidate.
  • XBI — not a candidate. No FDA approval/rejection decision published for today. The one calendar-flagged item (zilganersen / Ionis, nominal PDUFA Sep 22) was already approved Sep 3 — a stale-aggregator trap, not a live approval-day program. The xbi_leg sub-book (n=2, WR 0.0%) is carried, untouched; the carried N=2 vol_ratio calibration flag (09-17 1.120 / 09-18 1.187) clears no N≥3 and gets no new data point today.
  • WBD / PSKY — refused. M&A / merger-arb (WBD pinned within ~1% of the $31 all-cash offer; PSKY an acquirer-side move), not a directional program — the watchlist is explicit these are not trend candidates.
  • Single-name earnings names (AZO, THO pre-open; KBH after close) — refused as a class per TEMPER's 2026-07-24 finding (single-stock post-earnings gap-ups reverse within the first ~90 minutes, not across the full 6-hour program cycle), and both are sub-constituent.

Sizing vs. event risk: event risk is MEDIUM but there is no event tail — my 15:58 ET hard flat means no position survives a print regardless. No event-driven size reduction. Mechanically standard: 0.75% dollar risk per instrument, 2.0% session budget ($500), proportional scaling if combined risk exceeds budget, stop 1.5× ATR (trailing ATR: SPY 7.12, QQQ 9.50), hard flat 15:58 ET. Sizing engages only if a full gate stack clears.

Candid disclosure — the plan/engine enforcement gap is now N=4 and costful, and nothing here is a defense. Same-shaped instances: 08-19 XBI (−$118.47), 08-20 XBI (−$116.84), 09-15 XLE (−$64.98), 09-21 SPY (−$31.43) — a plan-no or plan-refused stack the engine traded, 0W/4L, two of them cost money. Yesterday was the first live validation of the 09-18 false-clearance hazard: the plan predicted a rebalance-lifted marginal vol_ratio, and SPY cleared by 0.0013x and stopped out. Today there is no rebalance, so that specific hazard is absent — but my refusal of the AI-complex fade and the XLE headline fade remain plan notes, not gate logic. p_trade 0.25 is the honest engine-fire estimate, not the plan's preference.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 773.52 prior close, range 766.04–774.89, SMA20 764.65 (well above), ATR 7.12. QQQ 741.41, range 727.84–743.22, SMA20 714.65 (well above), ATR 9.50. XLE on two-way crude around $100 Brent. 10-yr ~4.95–4.97% — a push toward 5.00% is the rates leg that would invert the tech bid mid-session. The operative read: an up-morning short fade into a narrow, AI-led tape is fading the leadership leg — acceptable only if the broad tape is genuinely exhausted, refused if the driver is still strengthening.

Invalidation: stand down entirely if (1) the morning signal is sub-±0.25% or the direction flips ≥2 times in the first half hour — the two-tier coin-flip's modal chop; (2) vol_ratio sub-1.2 at 15:20, ADX < 20, or exhaustion_score < 0.80 — the standard wide block; (3) the AI/semis driver is still strengthening into the close window (the 08-10 rule / 09-15 loss template — refused); (4) the XLE leg is driven by an escalation headline rather than a weakening driver; (5) any 15:20 clearance rests on a contested, two-tier tape rather than a single completed directional program. The most likely logged reason is vol_ratio or morning_signal / vwap_persistence on a direction-unknown two-tier day.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — structurally incompatible session, but the closest thing to a real path in weeks. p_trade 0.15, direction long, conviction low.

SURGE is live today (no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE/QQQ-earnings hard skip fires). My mechanism needs a clean three-phase structure: a first-hour trend establishment → a measured pullback to VWAP with contracting volume → a resumption confirmation candle, entered anytime 10:00 through the 12:00 window. The chronic binding gate is pullback_resumption, and this is my 15th session on the stretch if it fails again.

Why today is not yesterday — the honest upgrade, small but real: (1) No rebalance rotation distorts the open, so the first-hour establishment I read is a clean input rather than a passive-flow artifact (yesterday both the open and the session VWAP I measure against were rebalance-rotated). (2) The 10:05–10:10 Fed cluster sits inside my entry window — a hawkish read that retraces a gap-up back toward VWAP on contracting volume, then a resumption if the trend holds, is textbook three-phase, and it is the first natural pullback-generator in weeks (a relentless one-way drive is what has denied me 14 straight sessions).

Why the forecast still stays low — three structural objections, in order: (1) A gap-up tech-led open is my documented loss class — the 2026-07-24 catalyst-gap finding (0/2: on a gapping, news-driven tape the first hour is a price-discovery process, not a clean trend establishment), and 09-17's relief-gap-and-hold blocked me on vwap_side/vwap_slope. (2) The modal case denies the pullback. Yesterday both legs trend-qualified hard (SPY +0.77%/ADX 54.9; QQQ +1.47%/ADX 71.0) and neither produced a VWAP-touch pullback that resumed — a one-way drive structurally never gives the retracement the precondition requires (the 08-13 finding on repeat). (3) LOW VIX (14.81) is my weakest cohort — PF 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30. My thesis lives in elevated vol.

Sizing vs. event risk: event risk is MEDIUM but I never carry it — my 14:00 ET hard flat means no print exposure regardless. Standard sizing applies only if a full three-phase structure completes despite the gap-up frame: 0.75% ($187.50), single position, co-fire limiter (stronger |signal_return| between SPY/QQQ wins). No adjustment — and I am explicitly not sizing for a trade I do not expect. There is no VIX skip in my cleared code and I am not adding one; the session-character read is a forecast, not a parameter.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 773.52 prior close, range 766.04–774.89, SMA20 764.65 (well above), ATR 7.12. QQQ 741.41, range 727.84–743.22, SMA20 714.65 (well above), ATR 9.50; QQQ is the leading leg (Nasdaq-100 futures up more than S&P), so a with-trend resumption would call long on QQQ or SPY. The operative level is each leg's session VWAP through the 10:00–12:00 window — today a clean reference, unlike yesterday's rebalance-rotated one.

Invalidation (the expected outcome, not a contingency): (1) neither leg prints a ±0.30% first-hour impulse — the modal case on a quiet-drift or direction-unknown open; (2) a leg trend-qualifies but no VWAP-touch pullback resumes inside the window — the chronic block, and today's most likely outcome given a gap-up drive; (3) the gap-up first-hour drive reverses after 10:00 (price-discovery, not an establishment); (4) the Fedspeak cluster fractures the trend instead of producing a controlled pullback. The most likely logged reason is no_signal at first_hour_signal or pullback_resumption — both structural absence, not threshold grazes, and neither re-opens the first-hour-floor question (closed by the 09-05 deliverable: loosening the floor converts none of those sessions).

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-22 04:38 PDT
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
  • Firm-wide status: GO (event risk MEDIUM, VIX 14.81 LOW regime, normal Tuesday). No hard skip fires for either member — both live on paper.
  • Desk net forecast: ECHO p_trade 0.25 / short / low, SURGE p_trade 0.15 / long / low.
  • Calibration disclosure: ECHO's 0.25 sits modestly above yesterday's 0.22 (which fired; Brier 0.6084) — justified not by optimism but by the removal of the input-corruption that made yesterday's clearance marginal, plus the still-elevated trailing ATR (real ranges persist post-Monday). It stays low because the day's direction is a genuine coin-flip and a two-tier tape mutes index-level programs. SURGE's 0.15 sits above yesterday's 0.10 for one concrete, non-generic reason — the 10:05–10:10 Fedspeak cluster inside its window is a real pullback-generator and the open is no longer rebalance-rotated — but stays low because the gap-up drive class and the 14-session pullback_resumption block both point the other way. Both are honest structural calls, not fences.
  • Carry: neither stack carries overnight risk — ECHO flat 15:58 ET, SURGE flat 14:00 ET. No Tier-1 event, so no event tail.
  • Carried TEMPER items unchanged and untouched this session: ECHO plan/engine enforcement gap (N=4, 0W/4L, escalated sizing-(b) — gate-level enforcement of plan stand-downs); ECHO XBI vol_ratio floor flag (N=2, incomplete data — flagged, not escalated); ECHO exhaustion_score binding-gate / live-median watch; XBI exclusion review (n=2, not triggered); SURGE session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation; SURGE ADX 22.0 floor / re-tune watch (moderate-trend 22–30 outperforms strong-trend ≥30 — reinforced, not an intervention); SURGE event-day skip diagnostic (resolved MIXED); SURGE 2023 PF 0.95 watch. No gate logic modified — nothing in this plan touches a baseline. The gap-up/two-tier session-character reads are forecasts, not parameter changes.
