Desk Plan — Reversal — 2026-09-21
Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-21-pm.md PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — this plan covers active members Null + Meridian only)
Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: LOW — and the event gate does NOT fire for either member. No Tier-1 today or through the next 7 trading days (next: PCE Sep 30, NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14). FOMC (Sep 16) and the BOJ hike are both in the past. Firm-wide status GO. Both active members'
is_event_day() checks return clean — a live, tradeable session. The only scheduled reads are second-tier (Chicago Fed Nat'l Activity Index 7:30, Fed speakers Goolsbee/Jefferson/Williams/Barkin) — none a market-binary. The live risk this session is external, not calendar: the two quarterly rebalances, the Houthi/oil vector, and the diplomatic week. - Session character expected: AI-chip-led risk-on open on a macro-quiet day — but the session's structural story is the dual index rebalance. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 quarterly rebalances are effective at today's open — a passive flow cluster. Futures are firm (QQQ ~+0.9–1.0%, SPY ~+0.6% implied; semis/AI-memory the leadership), and Nasdaq opened the week higher on the AI bid despite a "net-negative" weekend news cycle (Anthropic IPO delay, OpenAI cash burn). For THIS desk the rebalance is the load-bearing character note, not a footnote: per the standing TEMPER learning (2026-06-22, Nasdaq-100 effective-date), index-rebalance-effective sessions are below-ATR, low-conviction, rotation-churn tapes — passive program volume dominates intraday structure with dislocated index prints rather than clean price discovery. That is precisely the distortion both our mechanisms measure at the open (Null's cash gap; Meridian's prior-high sweep geometry). Do not read a firm risk-on open as a guaranteed directional day — the rebalance can deliver a different open print than the implied futures, and the two-way oil vector (Houthi strikes on Riyadh/Yanbu + Bab el-Mandeb vs. UNGA/US-Iran de-escalation hopes) plus the Trump–Xi summit (Wed) / UNGA open a live headline clock.
- VIX regime: 14.87 (LOW, <18) — up a hair from the prior close 14.81. LOW-VIX is the historically favorable cohort for this desk (Null backtest WR 80.1% in the <18 bucket; Meridian's edge concentrated there too). Cohort logic runs today — but VIX level does not gate either mechanism, so it is a tailwind note, not a signal.
- Key levels:
- QQQ: prior close 721.36 (Null's gap-fill target), prior-day range 715.19 – 721.73 (range 6.54 — a normal-wide prior day), prior high 721.73 (Meridian's sweep level), 20-day SMA 713.25 (above SMA20), ATR(14) 8.25. Null's in-band gap band: ±0.83 to ±5.78 pts.
- SPY: prior close 761.62, prior-day range 757.98 – 762.00 (range 4.02), prior high 762.00 (Meridian's sweep level), 20-day SMA 764.26 (below SMA20), ATR(14) 6.50.
- IWM: no briefing price block; Meridian marks its sweep level (prior high) at the open. 20-day average range ~2.9 → 1.25× ceiling ≈ 3.6 (refreshes today).
- Pre-market: QQQ 728.00 (+1.01%), SPY 766.43 (+0.62%) implied — both above their prior highs and both imply an OVERSIZE open gap (QQQ gap ≈ +6.64 ≈ 0.80× ATR; SPY gap ≈ +4.81 ≈ 0.74× ATR). Confirm the actual gap at the cash open — on a rebalance-effective day the open print is the one number that matters most for both members, and it can dislocate from the implied read.
- Macro backdrop: one sentence — a firm-wide GO whose tape is an AI-chip-led risk-on open sitting on top of a passive-flow cluster (S&P + Nasdaq rebalance effective today) plus a live two-way geopolitical/diplomatic clock — and both our fade mechanisms are pointed against a bid whose dislocations are exactly what the rebalance can manufacture.
- Desk-wide rebalance-open assessment (explicit, matching the standing learning): on rebalance-effective dates the passive program volume can (a) make Null's cash-open gap print oversize even when the implied read is in-band, or the reverse; and (b) dislocate Meridian's prior-high sweep geometry — indexes that open above their prior highs have the sweep level behind the tape before the mechanism's kill-zone bar can form. This is the same class of predictable rotation-churn noted in the 2026-06-22 learning. Neither member has a rebalance gate and I am adding none — no unilateral tweak. The honest treatment is on the forecast: both calls are priced low, and if a signal does fire its quality is degraded relative to a clean two-sided tape.
Null — QQQ (gap fade / FVG; MNQ proxy, gap measured at the cash open)
Setup present: POSSIBLE, but the expected binder is the GAP-SIZE filter (oversize gap-up) — not the trend filter that bound on the last two live-eligible attempts. p_trade 0.20, direction short, conviction low. Null's event gate is clean (no Tier-1); the mega-cap earnings filter is also clean (Monday is earnings-light; nothing QQQ top-10 reports overnight into today).
- The implied open is OVERSIZE for the size filter. QQQ prior close 721.36; implied open ≈ 728.00 → gap +6.64 pts ≈ 0.80× ATR(14) 8.25 → above the 0.70× ceiling. The last live-eligible session (09-18) finally printed a clean in-band 0.244× tiny gap and Null converted it (+$84.40). Today the same AI-chip bid that produced that gap has widened it to oversize — the oversize-gap regime that ran 09-01 → 09-17 has not gone away; 09-18 was an isolated break, not a regime change (the standing watch).
- The rebalance dislocation is the only live path — and it is the whole call. Null measures the gap at the cash open, not the implied future. On a rebalance-effective day, passive index flow can print a materially different open than the overnight bid implies. The tradeable paths: a gap-down long if QQQ opens in [715.59, 720.54] (in-band gap-down below prior close), or a tiny gap-up short if it opens in (721.36, 723.84] (below 0.30× — the relaxation path that fired 08-05). Blocked: open ≥ 723.84 and in-band-but-≥0.30× (above ~724 → trend filter: above SMA20 gap-up fade, skip), open ≥ 727.14 (oversize), or open < 715.59 gap-down (oversize the other way). The implied ~728 sits in the oversize blocker — so base case is
no_trade:gap_size. A rebalance print that undershoots the implied bid by ~0.6% is what would flip it live. - Direction, if it fires, is short — the plausible qualifying path is the tiny gap-up fade (high-probability, given the tape opens firm); a gap-down long is possible but contrary to the pre-market read.
Sizing vs event risk: standard — 1 MNQ, 0.5% risk, one position at a time, 11:00 ET hard exit. No event risk to size against (LOW, no Tier-1). Do not upsize on the LOW-VIX cohort, and do not upsize on a rebalance-effective day — the oversize blocking is the mechanism working, and any trade that does slip through an undershooting rebalance print is still a lowered-quality entry vs. a normal session. atr14_daily 8.25 (marginally below 09-18's 8.42) — arithmetic only.
Key levels: QQQ prior close 721.36 (fill target), prior high 721.73, prior low 715.19, SMA20 713.25, ATR(14) 8.25; in-band gap 0.83–5.78 pts; tradeable open zone 715.59–720.54 ∪ 721.36–723.84.
Invalidation / stand-down: stand down if the cash-open gap prints ≥ 0.70× ATR (≥ 5.78 pts, open ≥ ~727.1) — the base case today, an oversize AI/rebalance gap is the population v2 excludes; or < 0.10× ATR (open ~720.5–722.2) — no edge; or in-band but ≥ 0.30× on a gap-up above the SMA — refused by the trend filter by rule. The 11:00 ET hard exit is unchanged. no_trade:gap_size is, on this tape, the expected outcome — not a near-miss.
Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=15 W14/L1, LLR ~+2.25+, cumulative +$1,965.99, WR 93.3%; first-loss watch stays N=1 (the 09-03 trend-day fade remains un-clustered). Standing watch renewed: 09-18 (0.244×) was an isolated in-band break; today's implied oversize open tests whether the oversize regime truly broke or merely paused. No tweak.
Meridian — QQQ/SPY/IWM (kill-zone prior-high sweep + RSI(2) ≥ 88, bearish only)
Setup present: POSSIBLE, but the rebalance dislocation, not the volatility gate, is now the structural binder. p_trade 0.15, direction short, conviction low. Meridian's event gate is clean (no Tier-1); all three legs are evaluated.
- The volatility gate likely CLEARS for the second consecutive session. The gate compares the prior day's (09-18) range to 1.25× its 20-day average. QQQ prior range 6.54 vs ceiling ~8.4; SPY 4.02 vs ~5.7. Both pass. IWM is the uncertain leg — its small average range (~2.9 → ~3.6 ceiling) and its 09-18 range (not in briefing) leave it the leg most likely to volatility-block, especially on a rebalance day where small-cap churn can run wide.
- With volatility cleared, ADX (18–32) is the first live filter — and it is genuinely unknown. After a firm risk-on implied open, 15-min ADX is plausibly lifted, and the high-side ceiling has bitten repeatedly (SPY 45.6 / IWM 38.7 on 09-09, IWM 32.5 on 09-18). If ADX sits above 32 at the open, the volatility gate has simply been swapped for the ADX gate.
- The sweep geometry is pre-empted by the implied open — the rebalance is the binding shape. Both implied opens sit ABOVE their prior highs: QQQ ~728.00 vs prior high 721.73, SPY ~766.43 vs prior high 762.00. Meridian's Rule 1 is an exhaustion up-push into the prior high, closing back below it in the same 5-min bar. Opening above the level consumes the up-push pre-market; what remains is the wrong half of the sequence. On 09-18 (a smaller, sub-equilibrium gap) QQQ actually swept twice — the first sweeps in weeks — but RSI(2) read only 11.1 vs 88 (a 76.9-pt shortfall, categorically not a graze). Today's larger (+1%) rebalance bid makes the sweep threshold further behind the open and the tape even more mechanically-bid — the exact construction in which the standing desk finding says exhaustion does not form.
- The exhaustion (RSI(2) ≥ 88) gate remains the deepest binder. The standing watch (upgraded 09-18): sweeps now form on a bid tape, but the exhaustible up-push — RSI(2) ≥ 88 — has not appeared on any mechanically-bid session, and a rebalance-effective ~+1% open is the most mechanically-bid tape in weeks. Reachable-in-principle is not likely-to-be-reached (06-18 lesson; 09-10
no_sweep precedent).
Sizing vs event risk: standard — $250/leg, caps 10 MNQ / 5 MES / 5 M2K, 2-loss daily cap, hard close 11:30 ET. No event risk to size against (LOW, no Tier-1). Do not read the volatility-gate clearing as a reason to size up — it removes a blocker; it does not raise the quality of a sweep that opens already-dislocated above. iwm_leg remains n=0 — honest live anchor ~56%, not the 73.3% headline.
Key levels: QQQ prior high 721.73 / SPY prior high 762.00 (sweep thresholds — both implied to be below the open, the rebalance pre-emption); IWM sweep level marked at the open. ADX band 18–32. Volatility ceilings ≈ 8.4 QQQ / 5.7 SPY / ~3.6 IWM (1.25× 20-day avg range). ATR(14) QQQ 8.25 / SPY 6.50 → the 2.0× ATR(5m) stop.
Invalidation / stand-down: stand down if the ADX precheck lands outside 18–32 on all evaluated legs, or the volatility gate still blocks the legs that clear ADX (IWM most likely), or the tape opens above the sweep levels and holds — never producing a close-back-below bar with RSI(2) ≥ 88 (the drift-above analog of the repeated drift-away absence). The 11:30 ET hard close is unchanged and keeps the position out of the rebalance/close-auction flow.
Mechanism health: SPRT CONTINUE — n=3 W2/L1, LLR +0.222, cumulative +$385.22, WR 66.7%; spy_leg n=1 WR 100%; iwm_leg n=0. Standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. No tweak.
Plan Filed
- Filed: 2026-09-21 (pre-market, 04:35 PT / 07:35 ET)
- Frontmatter forecasts complete for active members only (Null, Meridian): yes. Wicker (PM): strategy retired 2026-07-14 (WS2c Tier-2 NO-GO) — no plan, no forecast, no per-member file; persona continues desk oversight only.
- Firm-wide GO; event risk LOW (no Tier-1 through the next 7 sessions). Both active members' event gates are clean. Null p_trade 0.20 / direction short / conviction low; Meridian p_trade 0.15 / direction short / conviction low. Both are "possible, not likely" — the honest forecast is that each setup is live but held by a binder: Null's implied open is OVERSIZE (≈0.80× ATR), re-blocking the gap filter after 09-18's one-session in-band break — only a rebalance-undershooting cash open flips it live; Meridian's volatility gate likely clears for the second straight session, but both implied opens sit ABOVE their prior highs (rebalance pre-emption), and the exhaustion (RSI(2) ≥ 88) edge stays structurally absent on a mechanically-bid tape.
- Rebalance note: no gate changes and no invented filters. Both members' meets are the shapes a passive-flow cluster can dislocate. Null's 09:30–10:30 window is the only structural mitigation (it can wait for the auction dust to settle); Meridian's kill zone covers the noisiest morning and has none. Both forecasts priced low accordingly.
- Reconfirmation ledger: no open item gates today. Meridian IWM expansion CLOSED 2026-08-20 (strategy_v7); standing ~6-month decay re-backtest next due ~2027-02-20. Wicker's feed/session re-run remains the desk's highest-priority open reconfirmation (unchanged, not a today blocker).
- Carried watch: Null needs the cash-open QQQ to print materially below the implied ~728 (below ~723.8 tiny-gap, or below ~720.5 gap-down) for a tradeable gap — an oversize open is the base-case blocker; Meridian needs a leg to push into (not open above) its prior high with RSI(2) ≥ 88 inside the ADX band — the rebalance pre-emption and the exhaustion deficit are the carry-forward binders.
