Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: LOW — no Tier-1 event (calendar clear through 09-28). The structural items are the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 QUARTERLY REBALANCES, both effective today — the closing auction is the passive-flow completion point, not the data. The live headline risks are external and two-way: the Houthi strikes on Riyadh + the Aramco Yanbu hub (Sat) and the Bab el-Mandeb battle (Sun) keep crude ~2% lower on diplomacy hopes while any escalation headline gaps it back, and the Trump–Xi summit (Wed) / UNGA (Tue) open a diplomatic week with real two-way potential (constructive AI-safety notification deal or a hostile tariff/Iran readout). Domestic macro is silent — only the 7:30 ET Chicago Fed National Activity Index and Fed speakers (Goolsbee, Jefferson, Williams, Barkin), none a market binary. Only second-tier prints pending-release; nothing pre-assigned in the data.
  • Session character expected: modestly risk-on, AI/semis-chip-led, tech-over-value two-tier shape — a macro-quiet Monday opening firm on the chip complex (Nasdaq futures +~1%, S&P +~0.6%) with breadth thin (~31% of S&P names above their 50-day). Per the firm's own discipline the direction past the open is not cleanly pre-assigned — the chip bid carries the tape, but the oil vector is overnight-to-intraday two-way and rates/long-end remain the standing transmission check. For this desk the operative character note is different and simpler: today is an index-rebalance effective date, and per TEMPER's 2026-06-22 calendar-hygiene finding such sessions run below-ATR, low-conviction, rotation-dominated (measured 0.59–0.63× ATR on the last such date), with the effective print completing pre-frontrun passive flow rather than initiating it. Mechanical churn, not price discovery. IWM — small-cap, only a second-order participant in the large-cap rebalance — is even further from the catalyst and even more likely to trade in the suppressed-dispersion zone my gate cannot use.
  • VIX regime: LOW — 14.87 (+0.06 vs 14.81 prior). Under the 18 boundary; scanner's 30-threshold reads CLEAR; firm-wide GO. For my book this remains my best backtest bucket (LOW <20: n=21, WR 61.9%, PF 3.01) — favorable if a run ever flags, and directly suppressive of the 5-day extremity that would flag one. It is gate-irrelevant to a flat stack today.
  • Key levels: the only binding level for this stack is ±4.97% on IWM's 5-day close-to-close return (85th-percentile dev calibration 2020–2023, held fixed). IWM is not in today's Alpaca block (SPY 761.62 below its 20-day SMA 764.26; QQQ 721.36 above its 713.25) and carries no IWM line on the scanner watchlist — the watchlist is TRIDENT/ECHO-instrument-centric and I state no IWM price rather than manufacture one. Standing structural refs remain ~$292 floor / ~$300 ceiling. The number that gates today's open is script-logged from the last completed close: −0.84% (agents/slack/performance/trades.csv, row 2026-09-18, blocked=run_magnitude, thresh=±4.97%) — 4.13pp short of the −4.97% down-flag, 5.81pp short of the +4.97% up-flag. Flat book (agents/slack/state/position_ledger.json → open_position: null).
  • Macro backdrop: a still-stagflation-tilted, tightening-on-two-continents tape three sessions into a post-decision relief trade — the Fed's first hike in three years (3.75–4.00%) read as a credibility positive, yields easing off the ~5% re-test, crude ~$98–102 and two-way on the Iran/UNGA clock, and leadership concentrated in the AI/semis complex on thin breadth. IWM is the small-cap/high-beta, most yield- and risk-sentiment-sensitive leg, and the leg that fails to travel far enough when a move is broad and orderly — the whole Phase 3 problem for this stack.
  • One generalizable TEMPER lesson applied: the 2026-06-22 calendar-hygiene finding — pre-disclosed quarterly index rebalance effective dates produce below-ATR, low-conviction, rotation-dominated sessions with no directional conviction, the effective print being the completion of a frontrun cycle, not an obligated-flow initiation. Today is the first S&P and Nasdaq rebalance to land co-effective since that finding was written. For a strategy whose entire gate is 5-day extremity, mechanically suppressed small-cap dispersion on an index-flow-dominated Monday is a headwind, not a tailwind. A session-character modifier, not a rule change.

slack — SLACK (Capacity-Ratio Swing Mean Reversion, IWM)

Setup present: no. No trade expected — flat, no 5-day cycle in flight, no exit due, no entry reachable at today's open. p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high.

State-machine leg, stated plainly. The ledger is {"open_position": null} — there is no open position, therefore no 5-day cycle in flight: no hold-silently marker, no close-and-log, nothing carried over today at all. Today is day 0 of a cycle that has not started. A real trade today is only even possible in one form — an entry at today's open from a run flagged at the last completed close. The reading that gates today's open is −0.84% against ±4.97% — 4.13pp short of the down-flag and 5.81pp short of the up-flag. There is nothing to hold and nothing to close; today is neither an open day nor a hold day nor a close day — it is a no-signal day. Zero event exposure, by structure, on the quarter's largest dual-index passive-flow session.

The roll, bounded honestly. Today's open is gated by the run settled at Friday 09-18's close — close(09-18)/close(09-11) − 1 from the last completed 5-day window, logged at −0.84% (script telemetry, trades.csv row 2026-09-18) — and it fully receded off the FOMC-week depth (−3.21% on 09-16 → −2.35% → −0.84%) on the composition mechanic the 09-11/09-18 reflections documented: the reading's day-over-day change is window composition, not the day's own move, and a large down session rolling off the back of the window can travel the reading two or three points on a sub-1% tape. From −0.84%, a down-flag needs the reading to deepen ~4.13pp; an up-flag needs ~5.81pp. Both legs are far, and today's own close — the next print after the open — is what would settle the window that gates Tuesday's open, not today's. Nothing about a rebalance-effective Monday with VIX at 14.87 argues for a crash-scale (~4.1pp single-session) small-cap close in either direction. The base case is unambiguously no flag settles — today and into the week.

Today is a measurement day, not a trade day. Even the next entry opportunity depends on IWM manufacturing a multi-percent single-session close on a macro-quiet, index-flow-dominated day — the least dispersed session template available. Today's open and close both land in the suppressed-magnitude zone; my mechanism waits for extremity, and the tape is engineered in the opposite direction.

Sizing / adjustments: none — standard operating procedure. Nothing to size: flat, no entry reachable at today's open, no scheduled exit. The locked 15%-of-equity fixed notional (≈$3,750 on the $25K account), single position, no stop-loss / no profit target / no early exit has no event-day or event-risk override, and today's LOW event risk plus the firm-wide GO are gate-irrelevant when the cycle says no-signal. A rebalance-flow day is a genuine argument for not adding discretionary exposure — but that argument has no purchase on a book that is already flat because it is unflagged. Flat-because-unflagged, not flat-because-frightened.

What I'm watching:

  1. The run settling at today's close (from −0.84%) — the only number that matters for the next (Tuesday 09-22's) open. Both legs are far (down ~4.13pp, up ~5.81pp); a rebalance-effective, vol-suppressed Monday with VIX 14.87 offers no coherent route to either. On the down leg, the only coherent path remains a yield-sensitive small-cap break on a 10-yr that re-asserts toward 5% and snaps the chip bid; on the up leg, a genuine small-cap catch-up toward the ~$300 ceiling would raise the first live up-flag of the quarter (→ contrarian short). Neither is today's character. My call: no flag.
  2. The closing auction, not the open — on a dual-index rebalance-effective day the mechanical weight sits in the closing auction and the last half hour; the point is only that today's close is the print my gate reads and it is the quarter's most passive-flow-distorted close. A close printing outside the session's range would be rebalance/completion churn, not a small-cap repricing — and a single such print is not the sustained 5-day extremity the gate trades. If a flag ever settles off an auction artifact, I want it to be the mechanism's call, not a calendar narrative's.
  3. IWM vs ~$292 / ~$300 — the standing structural bound. A decisive break below the multi-session floor remains the realistic route to a down-flag (→ contrarian long); a sustained catch-up toward the ceiling is the up-flag route (→ contrarian short). IWM is not Alpaca-owned and not on today's scanner, so I bound rather than assert a price.
  4. Whether the geopolitical week (Houthi/oil two-way, Trump–Xi Wed, UNGA Tue) generates the crash-scale small-cap extremity my gate needs — the standing Phase 3 falsification test, now running its ninth consecutive window. The 09-11 CPI, 09-14/15 AI-repricing gaps, 09-16 FOMC, and 09-17 post-decision session all failed to produce a flag; FOMC pressed the leg to its all-time Phase 3 depth (−3.21%) and even that receded to −0.84% within two sessions. A news-driven policy day is a repricing day, not a 5%-single-session small-cap torque day. I want the flag; I do not expect it.

Invalidation: none applies — flat, no entry reachable at today's open (reading −0.84% vs ±4.97% = 4.13pp short), no scheduled exit, nothing held into the rebalance print. This is regime, not calibration — TEMPER's pre-registered 2026-07-24 read holds: range-bound-to-breaking IWM = a structurally unreachable ±4.97% threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation. Today is the 56th consecutive logged session since Phase 3 began (07-02 → 09-21; the duplicate 08-07 row in trades.csv remains flagged for cleanup, so the row count is 57 for 56 unique sessions), roughly 3.3× the ~17-session expected inter-signal gap. The nearest Phase 3 graze remains 09-02's −2.95%, still 2.02pp away — with the closest-ever single read being 09-16's −3.21%, an isolated brush 1.76pp short that receded within two sessions and never clustered. No cluster in either the −4.0%→−4.97% or +4.0%→+4.97% band. SPRT sits at n=0, LLR +0.000, both boundaries (±2.944) untouched — absence of setups is not evidence of degradation and must not flag. A no-trade day is the mechanism working as designed, not a failure. No TEMPER conversation warranted.

Record-hygiene item carried (not a gate item, not a change — carried from 09-18): the desk's standing convention reads each trades.csv row's prior_5d_run as the run settling at that row's own date's close, gating the next session's open; paper_trade.py's telemetry computes it from the last close strictly before the row's trade date (paper_trade.py ~line 332). The two readings are one day apart. It does not change today's call — the gap is 4.1pp either way against a threshold nothing has come within 1.76pp of in 56 sessions. One of the two is wrong and the desk should know which before flat-streak bookkeeping is cited again; flagged for TEMPER/the weekly audit to settle. No unilateral change to any script.

Plan Filed

  • Filed: 2026-09-21 04:34 PDT (pre-market, House Slack desk session)
  • Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
  • Firm-wide status: GO (event_risk LOW; no Tier-1 event; S&P 500 + Nasdaq-100 quarterly rebalance effective today = structural, not informational) — gate-irrelevant for a flat swing stack: no position to hold, no exit due, no entry reachable
  • Expected action: no trade — no_trade:no_signal (blocked=run_magnitude; reading −0.84% vs ±4.97% = 4.13pp short; flat book, no 5-day cycle in flight; next entry window = Tue 09-22's open if today's close flags a run, which would exit 09-29's close)
