Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-16-pm.md PM: DELTA
Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: HIGH — literal same-day Tier-1. The FOMC decision + SEP/dot plot lands at 2:00 PM ET, Warsh's presser at 2:30 PM ET, inside the session. ~88–92% priced for a 25bp hike to 3.75–4.00% (first increase since 2023, first under Warsh); the tradable variable is the median 2026-27 dot (one-and-done vs. cycle-start) and the presser tone. Firm-wide status: NO-GO. Also on the tape: Aug Retail Sales at 8:30 AM (cons +0.8%, prior −0.6%) and Import Prices — both five-plus hours ahead of the print — plus EIA crude 10:30 and LEN after the close.
- Session character expected: Event-driven, contained, two-sided — do not pre-assign direction. The briefing is explicit: a low-conviction morning and mid-day where "most desks should get nothing tradeable before 2:00 PM," then a volatility expansion on the statement at 2:00 and a second on the presser at 2:30. Repricing-to-conclusion held in suspension, not a trend day — until it abruptly becomes one. Pre-market leans modestly higher, tech-led (NQ futures ~+0.4%), with the semiconductor complex — the day's most-watched bounce candidate, >20% off highs in bear-market territory — tentatively bid.
- VIX regime: 16.97 (−0.23 vs 17.20 prior close) — LOW (<18), and compressed into a binary. This is exactly the regime DELTA's mechanism does best in (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20) and nowhere near the 30 hard-skip. Favorable vol is moot today: the hard skip closes the session before any vol question is asked.
- Key levels: DELTA's only load-bearing number is the leader's first-hour return off the 09:30 cash open, checked at 09:55, vs. the ±1.5% floor. Index context (briefing, Alpaca-verified): SPY 757.42 prior close, below SMA20 765.30, ATR(14) 5.82, prior-day range 756.18–760.32; QQQ 704.60, below SMA20 713.34, ATR(14) 7.70, prior-day range 703.63–709.52. Gap on the instrument-level pair inputs: the briefing carries no NVDA / ASML / AMD / TSM prices at any verified level — it is Alpaca-owned at the index/ETF level and gives only a directional semis read (tentative bid). The scanner's pre-market tape (CNN, 06:46 ET) supplies directional single-name prints — INTC +3.35%, SKHY +3.05%, NVDA +0.50% — which I adopt as direction and sector dispersion only, not as owned price levels (the briefing itself flags that pre-market magnitude tables conflict across providers at this hour). ASML/AMD/TSM carry no pre-market print at all in either document. No instrument-level price is adopted and none is invented; both pair inputs require live confirmation at the cash open — and today neither will be evaluated.
- Macro backdrop: A rates- and oil-dominated, stagflation-tilted tape into a near-certain hike — 10-yr paused at ~4.99–5.00% (a hair below Monday's 19-year high, and the single change that permits the modest pre-market bid), Brent ~$107.5 after a ~1% technical pullback on a surprise crude build (supply story intact: Hormuz bypass shut, Yanbu suspended, Houthi attacks renewed, Libya disrupted), crypto down ~2% on a failed Clarity Act cloture vote, BOJ expected to hike to a 31-year high. The AI complex's operative question has hardened to "can they profit, and at what discount rate?" — and the Fed raises that discount rate on purpose today.
DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM), LONG-only
Call: No trade expected — FOMC decision day is a hard skip for DELTA, and the session closes before any signal logic runs. p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high. A deterministic stand-down by pre-registered rule, not a hedged maybe and not a shape judgement: there is no branch to evaluate, so today's forecast carries zero signal information and should be scored as such (expected Brier 0.0, matching the 2026-08-12 CPI, 2026-08-26 PCE, 2026-09-04 NFP and 2026-09-11 CPI skips).
- Primary reason — the hard skip. FOMC is in DELTA's hard-skip set (FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE) per
strategy_v2.md, enforced through paper_trade.py off data/event_calendar/. The scanner's own note is carried for the record: the 2:00 PM SEP/dot plot is not itself a Tier-1 data release — the skip fires because FOMC decision day is a hard skip regardless. Do not read this as a soft day. No leader impulse is measured, no LONG is available, no branch is scanned. - Secondary reason — the shape is DELTA's own structural stand-down even absent the calendar rule. The edge is an idiosyncratic design→manufacturer cascade (a leader's demand/capacity news telegraphing downstream to ASML/TSM over hours). Today is a complex-wide semi repricing plus an index-level macro event at 2:00 PM ET that reprices leader and laggard simultaneously, on one systematic factor — systematic beta by construction, not a supply-chain cascade. The scanner reaches the same conclusion independently ("DELTA's lead-lag is confounded"). And the measurement window (09:30–09:55) sits entirely inside Regime A — pre-decision positioning, with the binary still 5+ hours away and the next session's regime undefined until the dots print. The skip and the stand-down agree; that is a clean, redundant-protection case, not a marginal call.
- The honest tension worth naming — today the calendar is the binding gate, not the shape, and for once that may cost something. Unlike 09-14 and 09-15, where the pre-market was unanimously down and the interesting branch was the disabled-SHORT side, today the semis are tentatively bid and named as the day's most-watched bounce candidate — i.e. the pre-market lean is on the LONG side, the side this book can actually take. NVDA has not cleared +1.5% in the first hour since 08-03. So today is the first session in weeks where an up-impulse is plausible on the leaders rather than structurally absent — and it is closed out by the calendar rule before the impulse is measured. I am not re-litigating the rule (no unilateral gate change, ever). I am recording that this session is precisely the data point the open event-day diagnostic run (skip disabled) exists to interrogate, and that run remains unperformed (open, moderate priority per
strategy_v2.md's risk register). The skip is not evidenced as costly by today alone — one session, and any qualifying move today would still have to clear the complex-wide-repricing stand-down to be tradable. But it is the cleanest candidate window the diagnostic has had in weeks, and stating otherwise would be sanding a real observation. - Sizing vs. event risk: n/a — no position. Standard 0.75% single-position risk is irrelevant on a closed session. Zero exposure at the 8:30 AM print, at the 2:00 PM statement, at the 2:30 PM presser and into the close — and therefore no overnight or event-carry into Thursday's post-decision digestion. Worth correcting one thing in the shared read:
intelligence/2026-09-16-macro-briefing.md's desk-impact line describes DELTA as carrying "an open position through the print (live stop-out risk)." That is not correct for today and cannot be — the hard skip means no position exists. (It would also be the wrong framing on a non-skip day: DELTA's hard 15:30 ET flat and 2.0× ATR stop are set by the same rule set, and a 2:00 PM print inside the window is one of the exact reasons the FOMC skip exists at all.) Flagging for the record; not a strategy question. - Session-character fit: Poor by construction, and today's fit question is unanswerable — which is the point of the rule. An event-gated, two-sided, repricing-to-conclusion Wednesday is a macro/beta tape, not a pairs-convergence tape. DELTA takes no view on which fork the dot plot opens — direction-refusal applies here exactly as it does every session, and the briefing's "both tails are live and roughly symmetric" is the honest pre-print state.
- Up-branch / calibration status (carries forward, unchanged): The 09-04 pre-registered flag — a third NVDA up-graze inside ~0.3pp turns regime into a TEMPER calibration question — is not advanced today. A hard skip contributes no signal evidence either way (the same disposition the 09-04 NFP and 09-11 CPI skips got). The ledger stands: NVDA +1.23% (09-02), +1.02% (09-03), AMD +1.20% (08-31); 09-10 logged NVDA −1.44% (down-side, inside the floor, disabled-SHORT side); 09-14 logged AMD −0.27% / NVDA −0.21% — leaders flat and well inside the floor, the starved shape persisting. Flag stays queued, untouched. No unilateral gate change.
- Invalidation / no-trade reasons: The hard skip is itself the binding gate —
no_trade:hard_event:FOMC. No further invalidation condition is reachable, because no evaluation runs. If the engine were live, the standing invalidation would still apply: a leader move reading as whole-complex macro repricing is stood down, and any intraday VIX ≥ 30 closes consideration. Next hard-skip after today: PCE Sep 30 (NFP Oct 2, CPI Oct 14). - Book state carries forward untouched: Cumulative −$442.33 across 10 LONG trades (4W/6L, WR 40.0%, PF 0.494, SPRT n=10, LLR −0.159, CONTINUE — +3.103 to CONSISTENT, −2.786 to DEGRADED). AMD→TSM sub-book n=8, WR 25.0%, PF 0.191 — the 09-05 stop-calibration diagnostic read NO (widening the stop does not rescue that cell: PF 0.073 → 0.119 across 2.0–4.0×, nowhere near 1.5), pending TEMPER cadence-ratification; signal/regime watch, not a parameter fix. NVDA→ASML clean cell 2W/0L remains the quality cell and its trigger has simply not recurred since 08-03.
- ✔ Operational item — NEW and desk-top priority: the 09-15 run is a confirmed runner failure, not a no-trade.
intelligence/runner-health-2026-09-15.md (verdict REVIEW) lists delta | failed_or_timeout | missing: agents/delta/performance/daily_2026-09-15.md | runner_failed — delta is the only stack on that report in a REVIEW state; the other nine completed. There is no trades.csv row for 09-15 (the last row is 09-14 no_trade:no_signal) and no plan-calibration.csv row, so 09-15's plan forecast (p_trade 0.04) is unscoreable and the session's leader first-hour returns were never captured — on a day whose plan flagged the semis gapping down hard (NVDA ~−2.9%, AMD >−7%, ASML −7.25%) into the disabled-SHORT side the mechanism is closed out of by design. This is the second observation hole in two weeks: 09-09 (also run-trades watchdog, still unfilled) and now 09-15. Both are silent observation loss, and neither is a no-trade. Per the standing rule, a missing observation is not evidence of a near-miss and is not calibration evidence — it is a pipeline defect. Carried forward as: (a) backfill 09-15 and 09-09 standalone (python agents/delta/paper_trade.py , unset PYTHONPATH), and (b) the already-proposed ledger-freshness post-run check — every active stack must have today's performance/daily_.md after run-trades, else flag — which now has two instances supporting it, one of them after the fix was first proposed. Already logged in learnings.md 2026-09-10; the 09-15 repeat is the escalation case for wiring the check in rather than re-noting it. - Watch items (informational only — no action today): (1) the 2026 year-end median dot as the single most informative number of the day and the 10-yr's hold-or-reject of 5.00% as the transmission check — the confirmed-hike branch is the least informative outcome and the surprise tails carry the move; (2) whether the semis' pre-market bounce attempt survives the 8:30 Retail Sales print and then the dot plot — a dovish-relative surprise is the one path that could hand this complex a clean up-impulse into Thursday, and it is the branch that would matter most to a LONG-only book that has not cleared the up-floor since 08-03; (3) the open event-day diagnostic run (skip disabled) — today is its most informative candidate window in weeks (see the honest-tension item above), still not performed, moderate priority, and not something DELTA runs unilaterally.
