Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: HIGH — but not a same-day Tier-1, and not a carry risk for this desk. FOMC decision + SEP + presser lands Wed Sep 16, 2:00 PM ET (2 days out) — step-4 flags a Tier-1 inside ~2 days, and it is a decision, not minutes, so literal-HIGH is the honest rating. Today's own US macro calendar is empty. The load-bearing distinction for House Echo: neither of my stacks can ever carry this event. ECHO's hard flat is 15:58 ET and SURGE's is 14:00 ET. Nothing we open today survives to the print. So HIGH event risk for this desk is a tape-character problem, not a carry problem — it degrades the session's structure, it does not size-cap a position. Firm-wide status is GO; the watchlist is explicit that calendar-clean is not setup-clean.
- Session character expected: two-tier de-risk / fundamental-repricing gap — tech and AI lower on capex-return doubt (Amodei's "We Must Pace the Frontier", OpenAI's Astra pause, congressional scrutiny, Oracle's data-center profitability and the ORCL read-through), energy higher on the oil re-escalation (Oman postponed the GCC–Iran Hormuz talks; Brent back past $107, WTI ~$102, Saudi's East-West bypass still shut). Explicitly not a clean single-directional tape, and the briefing names it a repricing gap rather than a catalyst-adjacent dip.
- VIX regime: 17.68 (+1.84 vs prior close 15.84) — LOW (<18), and only 0.32 below the boundary. LOW is the weakest cohort for both of my stacks: ECHO's vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 / exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 gates need real institutional participation, and SURGE's PF is 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 at 20–30. One more up-day flips the regime tag TEMPER disaggregates against — worth logging today's bucket even on a no-trade day.
- Key levels: SPY prior close 764.14 (prior range 763.63–766.35, SMA20 766.84 — below, ATR14 5.57); an implied ~-0.7% open puts SPY below its prior-day low, the cleaner "this is a gap, not a drift" tell. QQQ prior close 714.89 (range 713.69–717.61, SMA20 715.70 — below, ATR14 7.71) with Nasdaq-100 futures ~-1.7%. XLE ~$65 area (09-10 read: price 65.14 vs VWAP 65.01; 09-08 entry 64.93) with Brent's $107 line and the shut East-West pipeline (~7M bbl/d) as the supply tell. Rates: 10-yr near 5%, the equity-multiple constraint and the swing variable into the FOMC.
- Macro backdrop: a stagflation-tilted, FOMC-gated week in which the AI trade's question has flipped from "will they spend?" to "can they profit from what they spent?" — and oil is re-firming into the same gate.
- Desk-level consequence: for the first time in weeks the structural exclusion is shared by both members and comes from the same cause. A fundamental-repricing gap closes the surface for the whole Family 2 mandate: continuation needs a clean directional impulse the repricing won't give (Catalyst-Gap Containment), and the fade is conditional — it re-opens only if the AI complex stabilizes. That single condition is the desk's whole day, and it is measured by Oracle.
ECHO — dynamic universe (SPY/XLE/XBI baseline), close-leg exhaustion fade at 15:30 ET
Call: no trade expected in the mechanism's own terms — forecast p_trade 0.20, direction short, conviction low. The 0.20 is deliberately not 0.05, and not because I like a setup: it is the honest probability that the engine fires, and my plan-level stand-downs are not wired into gate logic (the 08-19/08-20 plan/engine enforcement gap, still open — on 08-20 the plan said no-trade and the engine traded XBI anyway).
Setup present? Partly, on paper — and each live candidate is disqualified for a different reason:
- XLE — the one candidate I expect to clear gates and the one I refuse. The watchlist marks it the strongest ECHO candidate today: intrinsic, sector-level, supply-headline-driven (talks postponed + pipeline shut), Brent past $107 at a four-month high. On a news day like this the morning signal should print well past ±0.25% with vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 and an exhaustion_score that clears 0.80 — i.e. the gate stack that has blocked me for eighteen sessions would finally open. It opens on the driver's own strengthening sector, and my pre-committed 08-10 rule says fading that is the loss template (−$75.89), not a setup. This is the exact trap the XLE re-test of 08-14 was written for. Stand down on XLE.
- SPY — the gap-down leg, and structurally excluded. A repricing gap is not fade fuel until it stabilizes; the briefing's own note says the fade is conditional on Oracle/NVDA stabilizing and is excluded outright if the profitability doubt extends across the complex. My exhaustion_score has also grazed more than cleared lately (0.790 on 09-01, 0.764 on 09-03) and 09-10 blocked wide on ADX 14.9. A negative SPY morning signal faded at 15:30 is a LONG against a repricing tape. Not a setup.
- XBI — not a candidate. No FDA decision dated today (next PDUFAs Sep 19/22/27); the ≤ -5% first-half-hour skip is moot. Sub-book still n=2, WR 0.0%, exclusion trigger (n≥15) far off.
- No new scanner candidates — the watchlist's ECHO section is XLE and SPY only, with GLW explicitly non-qualifying (sector-wide driver, no company-dated catalyst).
Sizing vs. event risk: no reduction — standard 0.75% per instrument, 2.0% session budget, unchanged. There is nothing to trim for the FOMC: the 15:58 flat means this stack never carries the Wed event, and a blanket size-down would be risk theater. The discipline today is selection, not size — and specifically not upsizing a driver-sector fade because its gates happen to clear.
Session-character fit: poor, and I want it on the record. My edge is exhaustion of a program that ran all day; a repricing gap makes the first hour price discovery, so any "morning bias" I measure is a re-anchoring artifact rather than a completing institutional program. The two-tier split actually hands me candidates pointing opposite ways (XLE up = a fade-short, SPY down = a fade-long), which is a two-sided surface my single-direction "the morning's program is finished" premise is not built to arbitrate.
Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 764.14 / range 763.63–766.35 / SMA20 766.84 / ATR 5.57 — sub-763.63 open is the gap confirmation. QQQ 714.89 / SMA20 715.70 / ATR 7.71. XLE ~$65 with Brent $107 as the tell; 10-yr near 5% as the multiple constraint.
Invalidation: the XLE path is invalidated by my own pre-commitment (driver-sector fade) before the session starts; the SPY path is invalidated at the mechanism level by the repricing character. A same-day Hormuz de-escalation headline flips XLE's morning sign so no VWAP persistence forms. Mechanically, any leg blocking on vol_ratio < 1.2, ADX < 20, or exhaustion_score < 0.80 closes the day by gate.
SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)
Call: no trade expected — binding gate pullback_resumption (regime / structural). Forecast p_trade 0.10, direction short, conviction low.
Setup present? No — and today is close to a worst-case profile, on four independent grounds. Note first what isn't blocking: unlike Friday, there is no calendar skip today. FOMC is Wednesday, not today; PCE/NFP/CPI are out of window; and today's after-close LEN report gaps tomorrow's open (outside my window), so nothing in today's session is calendar-closed. Today's no-trade is a mechanism forecast, not a skippable-event forecast — which makes it the more informative kind of plan:
- The first hour is a repricing gap, not trend establishment. This is my documented 0/2 catalyst-gap loss class (07-24 TEMPER learning): when the open is price discovery, the three-phase structure (trend → measured pullback with contracting volume → resumption candle) is fundamentally invalid. A Nasdaq-100 futures ~-1.7% / S&P ~-0.7% AI-capex gap-down is exactly that shape.
- LOW VIX (17.68) is my weakest cohort — PF 1.36 in VIX < 20 vs 2.18 in VIX 20–30. My momentum thesis lives in elevated vol; this is its floor, not a gradation.
- The chronic gate, and it is not the floor. On 09-10 SPY was genuinely trend-qualified —
first_hour_signal −0.66% cleared ±0.30%, ADX 41.9 — and pullback_resumption still denied. That is now ≥11 trend-qualified no-shows since 07-15, including 08-13 when both legs qualified simultaneously. A first move that never retraces-and-resumes inside the window is structural absence of the three-phase structure, not a threshold being grazed — and the 09-05 deliverable settled that loosening the first-hour floor wouldn't have converted those days anyway. - Today the geometry is actively hostile. Both my legs (SPY, QQQ) sit on the same correlated down side — QQQ is the concentrated expression of the same catalyst — so the only directional side available to me is SHORT, and on a gap-down day session VWAP sits above the open: a with-trend short has to pull upward into VWAP to trigger, which is the counter-direction retrace geometry that killed 09-10. That is why the direction field is
short while p_trade is only 0.10 — I can name the side, and I still expect the precondition to fail.
Sizing vs. event risk: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 ET — unchanged. No VIX skip is being added (there is none in the cleared v9 mechanism and the standing rule is no tuning for throughput), and no size-down is warranted: the 14:00 flat means a cleared signal carries zero exposure into the FOMC-gated afternoon, so today's HIGH rating is again a structure problem, not a carry problem.
Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 764.14 / range 763.63–766.35 / ATR 5.57 / SMA20 766.84 (second session below). QQQ 714.89 / range 713.69–717.61 / ATR 7.71 / SMA20 715.70. Session VWAP through the 10:00–12:00 window is the operative level — above the open on a gap-down tape, which is the whole problem.
Invalidation: a sub-±0.30% first-hour impulse on both legs (the modal outcome on a news-gap morning); a two-sided chop that leaves neither leg ADX-qualified; or a trend-qualified leg whose VWAP-touch-and-resume does not complete inside 10:00–12:00. Even a genuine stabilization of the AI complex — which would convert the open from a repricing gap into an ordinary pullback — would leave pullback_resumption as the binding gate, which is the point.
Plan Filed
- Filed: 2026-09-14 04:35 PDT
- Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
- Firm-wide status: GO (no Tier-1 today, prior VIX 15.84 well under threshold) — but two no-trade calls on structural grounds, not calendar grounds, for the first time this cycle.
- Desk net forecast: ECHO
p_trade 0.20 / short / low, SURGE p_trade 0.10 / short / low. Neither is a hedge: ECHO's 0.20 prices the engine firing on XLE's clearing gates despite the desk's driver-sector stand-down (the plan/engine gap is real), and SURGE's 0.10 prices the chronic resumption precondition on a tape whose geometry is hostile to it.
