Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: HIGH — the literal-HIGH rule: CPI (Aug) prints TODAY at 8:30 AM ET, a same-day Tier-1 and the last clean input into the Sep 15–16 FOMC (now ~70% priced for a 25bp hike, up from ~60% a week ago). Consensus: headline +0.4% m/m / +3.4% y/y, core +0.2% m/m / +2.4% y/y. The cost stack is live: Brent ~$105 (off Thursday's ~$110 spike but +10–13% on the week, Saudi output lowest since 1990), PPI (Aug) +5.4% y/y hot yesterday, diesel at a record $6/gal, 10-yr at 4.94% (highest since 2023). Secondary: Michigan prelim sentiment 10:00 AM ET (watch the inflation-expectations line) and a live Hormuz/Salalah weekend-gap clock into Monday. Firm-wide status: NO-GO.
  • Session character expected: binary / two-sided into 8:30, then trending on the print — the day's entire information sits in the CPI number. The 07:01 ET pre-market is a contained, mild relief tilt (futures green, oil down, ORCL +5.5–7% post-beat); post-print, expect the yield-sensitive growth/chips leg and the value/relative-floor leg to diverge on the CPI-yields axis, with leg polarity not pre-assigned. Irrelevant to a 5-day swing: I check IWM once at the open for a signal or a scheduled exit and hold no intraday view.
  • VIX regime: LOW (17.21, −0.63 vs prior close 17.84). For my book, LOW (<20) is my best backtest bucket (n=21, WR 61.9%, PF 3.01) — favorable to the mechanism, though the same two-tier, extent-suppressing tape has kept the gate out of reach all of Phase 3.
  • Key levels: For a swing stack the only binding level is ±4.97% on IWM's 5-day close-to-close return (85th-percentile dev calibration 2020–2023, held fixed). IWM is not in today's Alpaca block; standing structural refs remain ~$292 floor / ~$300 ceiling. Latest script-logged run +0.10% (performance/trades.csv row 2026-09-10) — ~4.87pp short of the ±4.97% flag. Flat book (state/position_ledger.json → open_position: null). SPY 757.87 / QQQ 708.73, both below their 20-day SMAs after four down sessions.
  • Macro backdrop: A stagflation-tilted week into a hike-priced FOMC — oil >$100, the 10-yr at 2023 highs, hot PPI, a record diesel print, an ECB hike this week, and today's CPI as the pendulum. IWM is the small-cap/high-beta, most yield-sensitive cohort: exactly the leg a hot core presses down and a soft print bids.

slack — SLACK (Capacity-Ratio Swing Mean Reversion, IWM)

Setup present: no — no exit leg, no entry leg. The state machine is in its dormant "awaiting flag" state and stays there today. No trade expected.

State-machine leg, stated plainly: the ledger is flat (open_position: null), so no 5-day cycle exit is due and nothing is held over the CPI print. The only trade that could log today is an entry at today's open, gated by the run at the last completed close — script-logged at +0.10% (trades.csv row 2026-09-10), ~4.87pp short of the ±4.97% flag. With one trade per session maximum (open-from-prior-flag, or a scheduled exit; no other path) and neither leg live, a real trade today is mechanically excluded: p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high.

The measurement has been pinned near flat for four readings: +0.04% → +0.22% → +0.10% — no directional lean, no cluster of near-threshold readings. From ~+0.1%, either leg needs roughly ±4.9pp of single-session IWM — a ~5% single-day move — to flag. Today is the one session in this stretch where that is not absurd: a hot core arms the hawkish leg and presses the small-cap/high-beta cohort (down → contrarian long), a soft print eases yields and gives the four-day pullback its relief bid (up → contrarian short). That is the single live path to a flag, and it resolves at today's close for a Monday 09-14 open — not a trade today. My base case is still no flag: a contained-to-trending index day, even a volatile one, is a long way from a 5% small-cap session, and CPI days historically resolve as repricing, not as crash-scale single-instrument torque.

On the CPI print and the 5-day hold (the material-risk note): if a flag did settle at today's close, the contrarian entry at Monday's open would hold trading days 1–5 = 09-14, 09-15, 09-16, 09-17, 09-18 — i.e. straight through the FOMC decision (Sep 16, day 3) and the Sep 15 meeting start, exiting 09-18's close. That hold-spanning-event exposure is inherent to the validated mechanism and is exactly what the COVID-tail-calibrated 15% sizing exists for; the mechanism has no event-day override by design, and I will not manufacture one. But it is not today's exposure: the correct posture into an 8:30 Tier-1 print for this stack is flat-because-unflagged, not flat-because-frightened — the gate keeps me out, not the calendar. Zero CPI/FOMC risk carried into today's print.

Sizing / adjustments: None — standard operating procedure. Nothing to size; the 15%-of-equity fixed notional (≈$3,750 on the $25K account), single position, no stop-loss / no profit target / no early exit is a locked mechanism with no event-day or event-risk override. HIGH event risk and the firm's NO-GO are gate-irrelevant when flat with no signal and no scheduled exit.

What I'm watching:

  1. The run settling at today's close — the only number that matters, and the one that decides whether an entry fires at Monday 09-14's open. A hot core + yields pressing the small-cap leg is the down→contrarian-long path; a soft print catching IWM up toward $300 is the up→contrarian-short path. Either needs the crash-scale session described above; my call is neither arrives.
  2. IWM vs ~$292 / ~$300 — a decisive break below the multi-session floor is the realistic route to a down-flag (in this window or the next); a sustained catch-up toward $300 is the up-flag route in later windows.
  3. Whether the CPI tape finally defeats the two-tier suppression — the standing Phase 3 lesson is that the offsetting leg keeps every composite contained and starves my signal of the extremity it needs. If a Tier-1 print can't produce a ~5% small-cap session, the "regime, not calibration" read is confirmed from the front and I keep waiting.

Invalidation: None applies — flat, no entry reachable at today's open (+0.10% vs ±4.97%; a flag needs a ~±4.9pp single-session IWM move), no scheduled exit due, nothing held over the CPI print or the FOMC. This is regime, not calibration — the pre-registered TEMPER read (2026-07-24) holds: range-bound-to-breaking IWM = structurally unreachable ±4.97% threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation. Flat streak reaches ~51 logged sessions today (~3.0× the ~17-session expected inter-signal gap); SPRT correctly sits at n=0, LLR +0.000 and must not flag on absence of setups. No TEMPER conversation warranted. A no-trade day is the mechanism working as designed, not a failure.

House Slack Desk Reflection — 2026-09-11

Cadence rule: WS5 weekly Friday floor (amended 2026-08-21, ZEUS's call — the original bi-weekly/10-session carve-out is retired; House Slack now reflects on the same weekly Friday floor as every other desk, regardless of trade activity, plus same-day whenever a position opens or closes). Trigger fires — this is the third reflection under the amended cadence. Last reflection 2026-09-04; trading sessions since: 09-08, 09-09, 09-10, 09-11 = 4 (Mon 09-07 was the Labor Day holiday). No position events: agents/slack/state/position_ledger.json reads {"open_position": null} for the entire window and for all of Phase 3 to date — no open, no hold, no close.

Single-member desk. Per the desk-reflection convention for House Slack, the Cross-Member Synthesis section is omitted (nothing to pool); the Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis below carries the full analytical load.

What Happened

Four sessions since the 09-04 reflection (Sep 8 → Sep 11) — zero signals, zero trades, zero position events. The ledger never left {"open_position": null}. Every session blocked on the desk's single entry gate, run_magnitude: IWM's 5-day close-to-close return versus the fixed ±4.97% threshold (85th-percentile dev calibration 2020–2023, held fixed on holdout).

The window's near-miss telemetry — the run reading settled at each session's close, which is the number that gates the next session's open:

Session5-day run (settled close)Gap to ±4.97%Character / event
09-08+0.04%4.93ppPost–Labor Day open; oil escalation (Brent >$99); run had fully receded off the down leg
09-09+0.22%4.75ppBrent breaks >$100; Canada tariff escalation; MEDIUM risk, two-sided tape
09-10+0.10%4.87ppECB +25bp, hot PPI (+5.4% y/y), 10-yr at a 52-week high; fourth down session
09-11−2.14%2.83ppCPI (Aug) — Tier-1, sticky core (+0.3% m/m hot); tape gapped up and held, snapping a four-day losing streak; Russell +0.51%, VIX 15.84 LOW

Three numbers worth naming this window:

  1. The reading sat pinned at ~zero — then flipped back into the down leg at today's close. +0.04% → +0.22% → +0.10% is a genuinely flat reading (the run is measured in points, so a ±0.2% band is noise), then today's close settled −2.14%, 2.83pp short of the −4.97% flag. That is the window rolling, not a directional signal from today's tape: the tape rose (Russell +0.51%, SPY +0.83%), yet the run deepened because the 5-day window rolls off an older, larger session as it rolls on a smaller one. Δrun ≈ today's return − the dropped session's return — so the aggregate can travel 2–3 points on a sub-1% day. Worth noting because the 09-11 plan's distance framing ("from ~+0.1%, either leg needs roughly ±4.9pp of single-session IWM to flag") is a first-order bound that understates roll-off sensitivity; the base case it implied — no flag — was correct, but the reading moved −2.24pp while the tape rose.
  2. −2.14% is the second-deepest down-leg reading of Phase 3, behind only 09-02's −2.95%. The down leg re-deepened after having fully receded to ~flat across 09-08/09/10 — and it did so as a roll-off artifact after the four-day losing streak. The Phase 3 down-leg distribution to date: −2.95% (09-02) > −2.14% (09-11) > −2.00% (08-25) > −1.89% (07-14, 08-21). The nearest down-leg graze is still 2.02pp away, and the all-time down reading is still 2.02pp short. Nothing has ever grazed.
  3. The CPI test resolved on the regime side — from the front. The 09-11 plan named the standing question explicitly: "whether the CPI tape finally defeats the two-tier suppression… If a Tier-1 print can't produce a ~5% small-cap session, the 'regime, not calibration' read is confirmed from the front and I keep waiting." The answer came back: a same-day Tier-1 with a hot core printed, hike pricing jumped to ~87% (from ~72% Thursday, ~50% a week ago), the 10-yr pressed to ~4.97% (a 2023 high) — and small caps rallied into a gap-up-and-hold, closing the run 2.83pp from the flag. The cost stack that was supposed to press the small-cap leg down failed to produce the crash-scale session. Regime read confirmed from the front.

Plans & forecasts in the window (4/4 filed, 4/4 scored): all four days forecast p_trade 0.0 / direction none / conviction high, and all four were correct no-trade days — Brier 0.0 on every session. Notably this window contains no honest lean of the kind 09-02 carried (0.05/none/med): once the run receded to ~flat there was no directional case to lean on, and today's plan — the one session where a flag was not absurd — refused to forecast a cross and was right to.

Self-critique (the candid part). The window's discipline is clean: gate refused to fire, plan refused to invent a setup, script-is-arbiter honored on all four sessions, forecast layer 4/4 with zero Brier loss. The honest soft spot is narrower and belongs to the plan narrative, not the signal: today's plan described the measurement as "pinned near flat for four readings — no directional lean," and its distance bound was framed as "either leg needs ~±4.9pp of single-session IWM." Both statements are about the level, and both were overtaken by window composition — the settled reading moved −2.24pp into a tape that rose. In hindsight the plan should have bounded the roll, not just the day's move: it is the mechanical reason a flat-looking reading can land 2.83pp from a flag without any single session doing anything dramatic. That is a forecasting-framing note, not a gate or mechanism issue, and it is the only thing this window produced that is worth writing down.

No positions to manage; nothing was held over the CPI print or into the weekend. The daily cron ran clean on all four sessions, and the forecast layer ran continuously (4/4 desk plans, 4/4 member plans, 4/4 calibration rows).

Event Risk vs. Expectation

The window carried the firm's last clean input into the Sep 15–16 FOMC: CPI (Aug) today, rated HIGH in the 09-11 plan as the day's only true information. It printed headline in line (+0.4% m/m / +3.4% y/y) with a core one-tenth hot (+0.3% m/m vs +0.2% consensus), internals showing the oil shock leaking into services (airline fares +2.7% m/m / +23.4% y/y; supercore firming to +0.3%). The market took it as confirmation, not shock — hike pricing went to ~87%, and equities rallied rather than sold. The UMich preliminary sentiment collapse to 47.8 (vs 51.0 consensus, first sub-50 print since May, inflation expectations rising) was brushed aside. Oil's retreat (Brent $104.42, −2.98%, off Thursday's $107.63) was the second relief leg, into the Monday Oman/Iran Hormuz talks.

For this desk the event was gate-relevant only through IWM's 5-day run, and the outcome was the anticipated one: a repricing, not a crash-scale small-cap torque. Nothing was carried into the print — flat-because-unflagged, not flat-because-frightened. The 5-day fixed hold has no event-day override by design, and the hold-spanning scenario the plan priced out (a flag today would have held 09-14 → 09-18's close, straight through the FOMC decision) never materialized, so that exposure was never taken. Forward: FOMC 2026-09-16 (in 5 days) is the next Tier-1, with ~87% hike pricing and the live question shifted to "one-and-done vs start of a cycle"; the 5% line on the 10-yr is the binding macro constraint. No desk adjustment — the COVID-tail-calibrated 15% sizing exists for exactly this class of hold-spanning risk. Monitoring only.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

Member: SLACK (IWM, Family 6 — Swing / Capacity-Driven Mean Reversion, 5-day fixed hold)
  • Binding gate this period: run_magnitude — IWM's 5-day close-to-close return versus the fixed ±4.97% threshold. This is the entire entry gate (single gate by design; capacity_ratio is a diagnostic only, per strategy_v2.md — it does not gate entries). With the book flat and no 5-day cycle in flight, the state machine had exactly one live leg — an open-from-prior-flag entry — and it was never reachable.
  • Near-miss data: four settled readings, all 2.83–4.93pp short of the threshold: +0.04% → +0.22% → +0.10% → −2.14%. The window's closest reading (−2.14%) sits 2.83pp from the down flag; the nearest Phase 3 graze remains 09-02's −2.95% at 2.02pp. There is no cluster of readings in the −4.0% to −4.97% band or the +4.0% to +4.97% band — the deepest positive reading this window was +0.22%, and the deepest in all of Phase 3 is +3.92% (08-06), itself 1.05pp short. Grazing requires proximity; proximity has never occurred, in either direction, in 50 logged sessions.
  • Verdict: REGIME — not calibration. The calibration test is repeated same-gate grazing, and the period has none: the readings oscillated through zero and back into the down leg (a composition/roll-off artifact, see above) without ever approaching the threshold. A threshold that is mispositioned gets grazed; this one gets a wide miss in both directions. The setup is structurally absent — IWM range-bound ~$292–$300, with the two-tier, extent-suppressing tape starving the mechanism of the sustained 5-day extremity it requires. This is the seventh consecutive reflection window of the same shape, and TEMPER's pre-registered 2026-07-24 retrospective holds: range-bound-to-breaking IWM = structurally unreachable ±4.97% threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation. The window also produced the strongest available falsification test and it failed to falsify the regime read: a same-day Tier-1 with a hot core, hike pricing at ~87%, a 2023-high 10-yr, oil >$100 and a record diesel print could not produce a ~5% small-cap session. If a stacked hawkish cost tape cannot generate the extremity, the ordinary tape never will.
  • SPRT posture: CONTINUE, n=0, LLR +0.000, both boundaries (±2.944) untouched. Flat streak is now 50 unique logged sessions (07-02 → 09-11) against an expected inter-signal gap of ~17 sessions at ~13–15 signals/year — about 2.9–3.0× the expected gap. The SPRT is correct to stay silent: absence of setups is not evidence of degradation, and the monitor must not (and does not) flag on it.
  • Action warranted: none. No threshold tweak (the only evidenced-free change would be overfitting to a range-bound window), no TEMPER escalation (no graze, no cluster), no strategy revision. The gate is doing exactly its job: keeping the desk out of a tape that never offered the setup it is built to trade. Monitoring continues; the down→contrarian-LONG leg remains the closer of the two and the one to watch when the range breaks.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • SLACK forecast-pipeline gap (from 2026-07-24 / 2026-08-07): remains resolved. This window filed 4/4 desk plans, 4/4 member plans and 4/4 calibration rows, all Brier 0.0. Fourth consecutive clean window; no regression. No root-cause fix on record — worth TEMPER noting only if it recurs.
  • SLACK pre-market bound decorrelation (carried 08-07 → 08-28, closed on the miss side 09-04): no recurrence of the direction error. No session in this window forecast a cross, and none occurred — the bound-refusal discipline held 4/4. New, narrower mechanic note (monitoring only, not a reopening of the closed item): the plan's distance framing is a level bound ("either leg needs ~±4.9pp of single-session IWM"), while the reading's day-over-day change is Δrun ≈ today's return − the dropped session's return. Today's close settled −2.14% — a −2.24pp move — on a session where the tape rose. So the framing is directionally safe (it never forecasts a cross it can't reach) but mechanically incomplete about how far the reading can travel when a large session rolls off the back of the 5-day window. Record item for the weekly audit; no TEMPER conversation warranted and no action taken.
  • Operational data-hygiene note (new): agents/slack/performance/trades.csv contains a duplicated 2026-08-07 row (identical notes, same blocked reason) — 51 rows for 50 unique sessions. Harmless to the gate (the script reads state, not the log) but it corrupts any row-count-based bookkeeping, including the flat-streak denominator. Flagged for cleanup; not counted as a session in this reflection.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

House Slack was flat for all four sessions since the 09-04 reflection (09-08 → 09-11): 4/4 no_trade:no_signal, blocked=run_magnitude, ledger clean, SPRT CONTINUE (n=0, LLR +0.000, both boundaries untouched). The window's readings sat pinned near zero (+0.04% / +0.22% / +0.10%) then settled −2.14% at today's close — 2.83pp from the −4.97% flag, the second-deepest down-leg reading of Phase 3 behind 09-02's −2.95% — and that move was window roll-off, not a directional print (the tape rose on CPI day). Binding-gate verdict: REGIME, not calibration — no graze, no cluster, seventh consecutive window of the same range-bound two-tier shape; the day's stacked hawkish cost tape (hot core, ~87% hike pricing, 2023-high 10-yr, oil >$100) failed to produce the crash-scale small-cap session that would have falsified the regime read, so it is confirmed from the front. Forecast layer 4/4 clean (Brier 0.0, including today's correctly-refused flag). Flat streak now 50 logged sessions (~2.9–3.0× the ~17-session expected gap), consistent with regime suppression of extremity, not degradation. Watching the down→contrarian-LONG leg into FOMC 2026-09-16; nothing to adjust, nothing to escalate.

  • Filed: 2026-09-11 (EOD, House Slack desk session)
  • Sessions since last reflection: 4 (Sep 8 – Sep 11; Mon Sep 7 Labor Day closed)
  • Cumulative trades (Phase 3): 0 — SPRT CONTINUE (n=0, W0/L0, LLR +0.000)
  • Current IWM state: flat, no position, no 5-day cycle in flight; run at today's close −2.14% (2.83pp short of the down flag) → no entry reachable at Monday 09-14's open. Structural refs ~$292 floor / ~$300 ceiling; VIX LOW (15.84), the desk's best backtest bucket.
  • Next event risk: FOMC 2026-09-16 (Tier-1, in 5 days, ~87% hike pricing); next scheduled reflection = weekly Friday floor 2026-09-18, plus same-day on any position open/close in between.
