Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: HIGH — and for the first time this week it is a SAME-DAY Tier-1, not a next-day one. CPI (Aug) prints at 8:30 AM ET TODAY. Headline consensus +0.4% m/m / +3.4% y/y; core +0.2% m/m / +2.4% y/y (range 0.1–0.3% m/m). This is the last clean inflation input before the Sep 16 FOMC, now priced ~70% for a 25bp HIKE after yesterday's hot PPI (+5.4% y/y). Firm-wide status is NO-GO; the watchlist marks every ECHO directional catalyst N/A and states agents must not trade. Both of my stacks carry CPI as a hard skip in their cleared gate logic — this is not a discretionary stand-down, it is deterministic: the engine will log no_trade:hard_event:CPI for ECHO and no_trade:event:CPI for SURGE regardless of what the tape does.
  • Session character expected: binary / two-sided into 8:30, then trending on the print — direction genuinely unknown until it lands. This is not the idle policy-coin-flip profile of the prior two weeks; the day's entire information sits in one number. Expect a volatile open and the first 20–30 minutes consumed by the print; the cleaner structures form after ~9:45–10:00. I will not pre-assign polarity — the briefing and watchlist both explicitly forbid it, and the 09-10 feedback loop graded PARTIAL precisely for calling the tech leg resilient into a yield-driven tape. A hot core re-arms the hawkish leg (yield-sensitive growth/chips the swing leg down); a soft core converts "hike likely" back toward "in doubt," easing yields and giving the four-day pullback its first relief bid (Oracle's pre-market strength is that expression).
  • VIX regime: 17.21 — LOW (<18) vs prior close 17.84. LOW is the weakest cohort for both my stacks (ECHO's vol_ratio/exhaustion gates need a real-participation day; SURGE's momentum PF is 1.36 LOW vs 2.18 elevated). It is also, today, irrelevant to my execution — the skip is calendar-anchored, not vol-anchored.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 757.87 — below SMA20 767.52 (fourth pullback session; prior range 756.64–760.00, ATR(14) 5.34). QQQ prior close 708.73 — below SMA20 716.56 (prior range 706.92–712.01, ATR(14) 7.53). Energy anchor: Brent cooled off Thursday's ~$110 spike to ~$105 (WTI ~$101) but is still +10–13% on the week; XLE last traded in the mid-$60s (09-08 entry 64.93). Rates anchor: the 10-yr at 4.94%, its highest since 2023.
  • Macro backdrop: a stagflation-tilted week into the FOMC — 10-yr at a 2023 high, PPI +5.4% y/y hot yesterday, oil >$104 (Saudi output lowest since 1990, Hormuz traffic at a fraction of normal, Salalah/Hormuz talks Monday = a live two-sided weekend-gap catalyst), diesel at a record $6/gal — all resolving at today's CPI and then the Sep 16 decision.
  • Desk-level consequence: no member has a live path today. Both cleared strategies hard-skip CPI; the watchlist forbids trading. The plan below is therefore a pre-commitment on a structurally empty session — and I am forecasting it as such: p_trade 0.0 for both stacks, direction none, conviction high. A 0.0 is not a hedge and not a default; it is the honest read of a deterministic calendar gate that the engine has already honored twice this cycle (ECHO 07-14 and 08-12; SURGE 07-14) on exactly this event class.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

No trade expected — binding gate: hard_event:CPI. CPI is a hard skip in my cleared v6/v7 gate logic, and today's CPI is a same-day Tier-1 print. The engine evaluates instruments only after the skip check, so no candidate can reach the 15:20 gate stack. p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high.

The skip is not an inconvenience I work around — it is load-bearing for my mechanism. My fade is an exhaustion-by-institutional-participation trade on a program that ran all day; on a CPI print the first hour is price discovery, and any "morning bias" I measured at 10:00 would be a repricing artifact, not a trend program completing. Fading that would be the same error class as the 08-10 driver-fade stop-out (−$75.89), with an event-sized tail. Standing down is the correct expression of my edge, not its suppression.

For the record, since the plan is also a market read: the Scanner watchlist marks every ECHO directional catalyst N/A today, and the candidates I would normally triage are all either non-qualifying by class or calendar-blocked:

  • SPY — blocked (hard skip). Intrinsic macro catalyst (the CPI print), but two-sided and direction-refused by rule; my exhaustion_score has grazed more than cleared recently (0.790 on 09-01, 0.764 on 09-03) and the 09-10 session blocked on ADX 14.9. No path even absent the skip.
  • XLE — blocked (hard skip). Oil cooled off the $110 spike to ~$104–105 and this is not an EIA Wednesday (the weekly petroleum report ran Wednesday), so even the volume path I leaned on 09-10 has no live catalyst. Context, not a setup.
  • XBI — blocked (hard skip). No FDA/PDUFA catalyst dated today. Sub-book n=2, WR 0.0%, exclusion trigger (n≥15) far off — unchanged status, uninformative on a skip day.
  • No new candidates from the scanner — the watchlist's ECHO section is explicitly N/A.

Sizing vs. event risk: not applicable — no sizing engages. Had the skip not existed, my answer would still be stand-down: a CPI day needs a volume-cleared, non-grazed gate stack on a still-bid-vs-exhausted discrimination, and a print-driven tape does not offer one. Note the structural fact even a trade would have been safe on: my hard flat is 15:58 ET, so this stack never carries overnight exposure into a following event either.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 757.87 prior close / SMA20 767.52 / ATR 5.34; QQQ 708.73 / SMA20 716.56 / ATR 7.53; XLE mid-$60s with Brent's $104–105 line as the energy tell; the 10-yr at 4.94% as the equity-multiple constraint.

Invalidation: already fully invalidated — the binding gate is satisfied on the calendar before the session begins. The only thing that could produce a trade is an out-of-cycle engine behavior, which the prior CPI sessions (07-14, 08-12) show does not happen.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — binding gate: event:CPI. CPI is in my cleared hard-skip set (FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE/QQQ mega-cap earnings), and today's CPI is a same-day Tier-1. The engine logs no_trade:event:CPI before any signal evaluation — exactly as it did on 07-14. p_trade 0.0, direction none, conviction high.

Even setting the skip aside, today is close to a worst-case session for my mechanism, and I want that on the record so the no-trade is not read as merely mechanical:

  1. The first hour is print-driven price discovery, not clean trend. CPI lands at 8:30, before my 10:00 trend-establishment read. That is my documented 0/2 catalyst-gap loss class (07-24 TEMPER learning): the three-phase structure (trend → measured pullback → resumption) is fundamentally invalid when the first hour is repricing rather than establishment.
  2. LOW VIX (17.21) is my weakest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 elevated). My edge lives in elevated vol; this is its floor.
  3. The chronic binding gate is pullback_resumption. Yesterday (09-10) SPY was trend-qualified — signal −0.66%, ADX 41.9 — and still no VWAP-touch pullback resumed inside the window; that is now ≥10 trend-qualified no-shows since 07-15, including 08-13 when both legs qualified simultaneously. Structural absence, not a near-miss to tune.
  4. Direction is a refused coin-flip. Neither leg has a pre-assignable trending extension into a Tier-1 print; the value/Dow vs tech polarity is the thing the print is supposed to resolve.

Sizing vs. event risk: not applicable — no sizing engages ($187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 standard, invoked only if a full three-phase structure completes, which the skip prevents). Worth naming the asymmetry honestly: because my hard flat is 14:00 ET, even a cleared signal would carry zero exposure into the CPI-driven afternoon — the skip is doing calendar-hygiene work, not risk-avoidance work, on this particular session.

Key levels (context, not triggers): SPY 757.87 prior close, range 756.64–760.00, ATR 5.34, SMA20 767.52 (fourth session below). QQQ 708.73, range 706.92–712.01, ATR 7.53, SMA20 716.56 (second session below). Both legs' session VWAP through the 10:00–12:00 window would have been the operative level — moot today.

Invalidation: already fully invalidated by the hard skip. If I were to reconstruct the no-trade conditions: a volatile CPI open, a non-trend or two-sided first hour, and — even if a trend-qualified leg emerged — the pullback_resumption precondition that has denied me all period. The 09-10 result (SPY trend-qualified, no retrace) is the freshest evidence that trend qualification alone is not my gate.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-09-11 (Friday)

Cadence rule header: Weekly/Friday or same-day-on-trade (WS5). Today is Friday 09-11 — a desk-cadence reflection day (reflection cron ran; neither member traded). Period covered: 2026-09-10 and 2026-09-11 — the two live sessions since the 09-09 reflection (the desk has no 09-10 reflection; the WS5 Friday-or-trade rule covers both days here). The desk took no trades in the period — both members stood down Thu on a contained de-risk into the CPI gate, then both hard-skipped Fri on the same-day Tier-1 CPI print.

Nominal desk net P&L this period: $0.00.

What Happened

Two no-trade sessions, one regime stand-down and one deterministic calendar skip.

Thu 09-10 — contained, sub-ATR, tech-led downside on the oil/yields cost stack. The third consecutive no-trade session for both members (ECHO's 18th consecutive no-trade on a non-skip day's gate read; SURGE's 16th consecutive no-trade). SPY −0.60% (1.08× ATR), QQQ −1.06% (1.25× ATR), VIX 17.84 LOW, the fourth straight down day into tomorrow's CPI. Both legs held exactly as the morning framed them — no clean trending extension the day before CPI (Morning Narrative PARTIAL, the sole miss being sub-leg polarity, not the avoidance). Neither Family 2 expression formed a qualifying structure:

  • ECHO blocked on all three legs — its plan-lean, XLE, blocked at vwap_persistence (price 65.14 vs VWAP 65.01, signal −0.65%, no sustained VWAP-side program), and both SPY and XBI blocked wide on adx (14.9 / 11.6 vs the 20 floor — no trend even established). No exhaustible institutional program existed by 15:20.
  • SURGE produced the period's single most informative read: SPY was genuinely trend-qualified — first_hour_signal −0.66% cleared the ±0.30% floor, ADX 1000-bar 41.9 — yet the chronic pullback_resumption gate denied (no VWAP-touch pullback resumed inside the window); QQQ blocked on vwap_side. This is the first time in the catalyst-absence cluster (09-02→09-09) that a first-hour signal actually cleared, isolating the chronic mechanism gate as the binding constraint rather than the preliminary floor.

Fri 09-11 — same-day Tier-1 CPI → both hard-skipped by cleared logic. CPI printed +0.4%/+0.3% core m/m (core 0.1 hot), headline in line; the tape treated it as confirmation, not shock — SPY +0.83% (1.52× ATR by gap, ~0.5× intraday = contained), QQQ +0.87%, VIX −2.00 to 15.84 LOW, a broad gap-up-and-hold relief rally snapping a four-day losing streak (both SPY/QQQ still below their SMA20 — a bounce inside the de-risk, not a trend break). The skip was correct on the merits too: the print produced no volatile print-driven intraday tape — the whole move was the 8:30 gap. ECHO logged no_trade:hard_event:CPI and SURGE no_trade:event:CPI exactly as their cleared gate stacks dictate and as the 09-11 plan pre-committed (p_trade 0.0 / direction none / conviction high for both). FOMC Sep 16 (~87% hike pricing) is now effectively locked and the week's pivot.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

ECHO — binding gate: adx (wide) on the non-candidate legs Thu, vwap_persistence on the plan-lean XLE; then hard_event:CPI Fri — all regime

The period's two gates were structurally distinct and both read regime. On 09-10 the plan's only live candidate — XLE, conditional short-fade (p_trade 0.30) — cleared its morning signal (−0.65%, past the ±0.25% floor) but blocked at vwap_persistence (price 65.14 sat only 0.13 above VWAP; no durable VWAP-side program formed). The two fallback legs blocked wide on adx — 14.9 (SPY) and 11.6 (XBI) vs the 20 floor — i.e. on a contained sub-ATR de-risk day there was no trend for a program to exhaust. This is a different gate from the 09-09 vol_ratio block, which tells the same story from the other side: contained, two-sided, pre-event tape simply does not produce ECHO's exhaustible-institutional-program precondition. 09-11 is a deterministic calendar skip that held by rule (07-14, 08-12 precedent) and was also correct on the merits — the CPI's gap-and-hold relief tape was a still-bid, participation-light move that a close-leg fade had nothing to exhaust even without the skip.

Regime or calibration? Regime. 09-10's binding blocks were wide, not grazes (ADX 14.9/11.6 vs 20; XLE's VWAP persistence never formed a sustained program), and none of them was a repeated threshold cluster against a single mechanism gate — the binding gate rotated (vol_ratio 09-09, ADX/vwap_persistence 09-10) across structurally absent setups. 09-11 is a calendar gate, not a learning event. No gate misbehavior, no repeated-threshold cluster, no tweak, no TEMPER conversation warranted.

SURGE — binding gate: pullback_resumption on SPY Thu — the mechanism gate finally confirmed as THE binding constraint; then event:CPI Fri; regime / structural, feeding the standing deliverable

Thu 09-10 gave the cleanest diagnostic of the entire no-trade stretch: SPY cleared both preliminary gates (first_hour_signal −0.66% > the ±0.30% floor; ADX 1000 41.9 ≫ 22) and was genuinely trend-qualified, yet the chronic pullback_resumption gate denied — no VWAP-touch pullback resumed inside the window. This isolates the binding constraint unambiguously: it is the three-phase resumption precondition, not the trend-establishment floor. All prior catalyst-absence sessions (09-02→09-09) blocked at the preliminary first-hour gate, so the chronic-gate story was inferred; today's read is the first where the preliminary floor cleared and the mechanism gate held. This is now the ≥11th trend-qualified no-show since 07-15 (including 08-13 when both legs qualified). 09-11 is the deterministic event:CPI skip (07-14, 08-12 precedent); the tape's gap-and-hold relief was not a clean first-hour trend + VWAP-touch retrace, so the mechanism had nothing to resume regardless.

Regime or calibration? Regime / structural, with an active conversation. The binding gate (SPY resumption, Thu) is not a threshold graze — the first-hour floor cleared and the resumption precondition genuinely failed to form (VWAP-touch then resume). A trend-qualified first move that never retraces-and-resumes inside the window is structural absence of the three-phase structure, not a threshold being repeatedly grazed. This is the documented ≥N-hundreds-thousands behavior feeding the active session-character / catalyst-gap TEMPER conversation (the standing deliverable, sizing-(a)-shaped at the next Desk Review). No unilateral tweak; the preliminary-floor question and the resumption-precondition question both remain TEMPER's to hold.

Narrative finding: the two Family 2 expressions again sat correctly on the sidelines, for different structural reasons. SURGE's Thu read is the period's most valuable: it confirms the binding constraint is the resumption, not the signal floor — a stage of the diagnostic that the 09-02→09-09 catalyst-absence cluster never reached because the preview gates always blocked first. ECHO's Thu read confirms the parallel: the binding gate rotates across structurally-absent setups rather than a single mechanism grazed — strong regime evidence. Both 09-11 hard skips were correct on the merits (gap-and-hold relief is neither an exhaustible program nor a retrace-resume structure) and vindicated the pre-committed p_trade 0.0 / conviction high forecasts. Sixteen consecutive no-trade sessions for SURGE and eighteen for ECHO's non-skip gate reads are long — but the explanation has been regime-anchored and now, for SURGE, mechanism-gate-confirmed — and neither SPRT is near a boundary.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • ECHO — exhaustion_score binding-gate observation: live watch; no exhaustion_score data point this period (both sessions blocked before the composite gate). 09-11 reinforces 09-08/09-09: a high morning signal on a still-bid-but-participation-light tape is not an exhaustible program. No tweak (T=0.80 in-sample, must not be re-optimized). Flagged for learnings.md (monitoring).
  • ECHO — plan/engine enforcement gap: stayed latent (no divergence — stands-down honored). Open, as carried.
  • ECHO — XBI exclusion review (WR < 50% over 15+ live trades): sub-book n=2, WR 0.0% — NOT triggered (needs n≥15). Carried forward.
  • SURGE — session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation (escalated 08-31, stand-alone THL): open, strengthened this period by the cleanest single-session evidence yet — Thu's SPY cleared the preliminary first-hour floor (−0.66%, ADX 41.9) and still lost to the chronic pullback_resumption gate. The pre-lim-thesis (09-02→09-09, "gate blocked vsw floor") is now subsumed: the resumption precondition is the binding constraint. Carried to the next Desk Review as a sizing-(a)-shaped candidate; do not touch the gate.
  • SURGE — plan/engine enforcement gap (shared with ECHO): dormant (stand-downs honored). Open.
  • SURGE — event-day skip diagnostic (resolved 2026-07-17, MIXED): 09-11's CPI skip is again consistent with the skip-correct thesis (gap-and-hold, no volatile print tape); the per-type-skip question stays a TEMPER conversation.
  • SURGE — 2023 PF 0.95 watch: rolling 6-month PF monitor, no trigger this period.
  • SURGE — ADX re-tune watch (moderate-trend 22–30 vs strong-trend ≥30): watch, not an intervention; no new data this period.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Desk-cadence reflection covering 09-10 and 09-11 — desk net $0.00, no trades by either member (Thu: contained sub-ATR de-risk into CPI — SPY −0.60%/QQQ −1.06%, VIX 17.84 LOW, four days down; Fri: same-day Tier-1 CPI, both hard-skipped, SPY +0.83%/QQQ +0.87% gap-and-hold relief, VIX 15.84 LOW; FOMC Sep 16 now ~87% hike-priced and the week's pivot). ECHO stood down correctly and by-regime: Thu its plan-lean XLE blocked at vwap_persistence and SPY/XBI blocked wide on adx (14.9/11.6 vs 20), not a graze — no trend to exhaust on a contained pre-event tape; Fri the deterministic hard_event:CPI skip held (and was merited — a still-bid, participation-light gap); cumulative −$83.55 (5W/4L), SPRT CONTINUE (+0.586). SURGE produced the period's key diagnostic: Thu SPY cleared the preliminary first-hour floor (−0.66% vs ±0.30%, ADX 41.9) — the first time in the catalyst-absence cluster it did — yet the chronic pullback_resumption mechanism gate denied, confirming (≥11 trend-qualified no-shows) that the resumption precondition, not the signal floor, is the binding constraint; Fri the event:CPI skip held; regime/structural, no gate touch, feeding the standing session-character TEMPER deliverable; cumulative +$482.98, SPRT CONTINUE (+1.131). Both engines agreed with their 09-11 plans (p_trade 0.0 / conviction high, Brier 0.0); no boundary risk. Next: FOMC Wed Sep 16 (decision + SEP + presser) is the week's Tier-1 gate.
