Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: HIGH (firm rating — CPI is TOMORROW, Fri Sep 11, 8:30 AM ET, a same-next-day Tier-1 print per Bucket A; literal-HIGH applies). No same-day Tier-1 — PPI (cons +0.4% m/m, strongest in three months) + Jobless Claims at 8:30 and Existing Home Sales at 10:00 are the run-up reads. Neither member's hard-skip set triggers today: no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE today; no QQQ mega-cap earnings during today's session (ORCL/ADBE report after tonight's close — they set tomorrow's gap, not today's book); prior VIX 16.46 ≪ 30. Tomorrow is a skip day for both — today is not. Firm-wide GO.
  • Session character expected: contained / two-tier / direction unknown — a de-risk session into CPI. Two prints land before the open (ECB 8:15, PPI 8:30), so the first 30 minutes are print-driven noise and structure is unlikely to form cleanly before the 10:00 dust settles; sub-ATR is the recent norm. No clean trending extension the day before CPI — the standing 5-for-5 direction-refusal discipline applies verbatim (value/consumer-Dow leg flagged fragile, tech/semis the offsetting leg).
  • VIX regime: 16.53 — LOW (<18), +0.07 vs prior close 16.46 (third straight session drifting higher on the risk/rates stack, not realized vol). LOW is the weakest cohort for BOTH of my stacks — it keeps ECHO's vol_ratio/exhaustion gates needing a real-participation day to clear, and it structurally suppresses SURGE's momentum (PF 1.36 LOW vs 2.18 elevated).
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 762.42 — below SMA20 768.25 for a third session (prior range 761.00–764.45, ATR(14) 5.43). QQQ prior close 716.35 — below SMA20 717.30, its first close under in this pullback (prior range 714.04–719.63, ATR(14) 7.39). Two-tier polarity is the live geometry: SPY (value/Dow) fragile, QQQ (mega-cap tech) the absorbing leg. Energy anchor: Brent holding >$100, WTI ~$97–98 — XLE traded ~$65 on 09-08 (entry 64.93); Brent's $100 line is the energy leg's tell.
  • Macro backdrop: a stagflation-tilted macro week into the FOMC — oil >$100, the 10-yr at a fresh 52-week high (~4.86%), the ECB hiking 25bp this morning, the US–Canada trade war escalating, and FedWatch pricing a Sept hike (~62%) against 65/93 economists expecting a hold — all resolving at CPI tomorrow and FOMC Sep 16.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

Setup: conditional, one live path — XLE — and it is the day's only real exhaustible-program candidate. Lean short-fade, modest probability.

Candidate triage through the v7 eligibility screen (watchlist Directional Catalyst Instruments):

  • XLE — ACTIVE, the one live program path. The live driver is the EIA Petroleum Status Report at 10:30 AM ET TODAY (holiday-shifted from Wednesday) stacked on the Brent >$100 supply shock — the single condition in this regime that actually clears my chronic vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 gate (it cleared at 1.3274 on 09-08 on the same driver and produced a winning fade; it blocked wide at 0.953 on 09-09 when volume dried up). Scanner reads XLE two-sided, tilt UP, so if it runs up all day on real volume my 15:30 fade is SHORT. Two cautions I carry, not dismiss: (a) the driver-fade loss template (08-10 XLE stop-out −$75.89 fading a strengthening energy sector) — the 09-08 win distinguishes genuine exhaustion (exhaustion_score 1.7405) from a still-bid program, so exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 is the discriminator, non-negotiable; (b) EIA-concentrated XLE is historically my weakest catalyst cohort (v1: 1 of 13 EIA-Wednesday sessions). Both are reasons to size conviction down, not to pre-emptively skip.
  • M (Macy's) — NON-QUALIFYING (7/24 class). Pre-market earnings gap-down bias (~−4% pending — confirm the actual print at the open). It clears my liquidity screen, but a single-name earnings gap is the documented non-qualifying class: post-earnings reversals complete within the first 90 minutes, not through the 6-hour program cycle. A gap-down would put me LONG contra, the wrong side of the completion clock. Only a genuinely-formed intraday one-way program (not the gap) could qualify it — base case: no.
  • COO (Cooper Companies) — NON-QUALIFYING (same 7/24 class). ~−6% premarket on a Q3 revenue miss + soft Q4 guide (dual-listed TRIDENT/ECHO; avg vol ~2.2M clears my screen). Same reasoning as M: the reversal is an open-window event, not a close-window exhaustion. Base case: no.
  • SPY — WEAK DEFAULT. Macro catalyst is intrinsic (PPI/claims/ECB/homes into CPI), but the tape is contained/neutral and direction is refused — SPY only fires if a genuine one-way macro program exhausts, a low-probability path on a two-print, two-sided de-risk day. SPY's exhaustion_score has also grazed more than it has cleared (0.790 on 09-01, 0.764 on 09-03).
  • XBI — DROP. No FDA catalyst today (no PDUFA dated Sep 10; nearest is Telix Sep 11 — ASX sponsor, no clean US equity). Sub-book n=2 / WR 0.0%, exclusion trigger (n≥15) far off.

Call: conditional, low-probability short-fade on XLE (p_trade 0.30). Direction: short — the dominant qualifying path is XLE up all day on the oil supply shock / EIA read, faded at 15:30. Conviction: low — a real volume candidate exists (the only one on the board), but the contained de-risk tape, the EIA-cohort caution, and the driver-fade loss template all suppress certainty, and the gate stack must genuinely clear (not graze) at 15:20.

Sizing vs. event risk: standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget — no reduction, no pre-emptive stand-down. The hard flat at 15:58 means zero exposure into tomorrow's 8:30 CPI — the event risk is next-day, and a flat-by-3:58 book never sees it. Sizing only engages if all four gates (+ exhaustion ≥ 0.80) clear; nothing about a HIGH next-day rating justifies a smaller size on a same-day flat book, and pre-emptively cutting size on a tomorrow-event would be the same error as pre-emptively skipping.

Key levels: XLE session VWAP (price must be on the correct side at 15:20); XLE ~$65 area (09-08 entry 64.93, ATR ~0.08 — the stop is tight, 1.5× ATR, and non-negotiable); Brent $100 as the energy leg's directional tell.

Invalidation: no clean one-way program formed by 15:20 (two-sided tape denies an exhaustible trend); morning signal < ±0.25% on all candidates; vol_ratio < 1.2 or exhaustion_score < 0.80 on every candidate (the likely modal block on a contained de-risk day); XLE chopped off VWAP mid-day; XLE still bidding on fresh oil headlines into the close = still-bid program = stand down, not fade; a de-escalation/trade headline that flips the energy leg two-sided. Standing desk note: my driver-sector stand-down remains plan intent, not gate logic (the open plan/engine enforcement gap) — carried forward, no action today.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — structural regime mismatch, not a forced call. Today is a GO day (no hard skip), but every structural input points away from the with-trend resumption:

  1. The first hour is print-driven price discovery, not clean trend. ECB 8:15 + PPI 8:30 land before my 10:00 signal. That is my documented 0/2 catalyst-gap loss class (07-24 TEMPER learning): on catalyst-driven opens the first hour is repricing, and the three-phase structure (trend → measured pullback → resumption) is fundamentally invalid there.
  2. LOW VIX (16.53) is my weakest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 elevated). My momentum thesis needs elevated vol to shine; this is its floor.
  3. No clean single-direction backdrop. SPY is below its SMA20 for a third session (fragile value/Dow leg) while QQQ just closed below its SMA20 for the first time; the tape is two-tier with tech the offsetting leg. A with-trend resumption needs one clean directional trend, not a rotation standoff.
  4. The chronic binding gate is pullback_resumption — trend-qualified but no VWAP-touch pullback resumes inside the window (≥10 instances since 07-15, including 08-13 when BOTH SPY and QQQ were trend-qualified simultaneously and neither retraced). That is structural absence, not a near-miss to tune. The last two sessions blocked at first_hour_signal first (09-09: SPY −0.29% vs ±0.30%, QQQ +0.21%) — a print-heavy morning makes the sub-floor block the modal outcome again.
  5. Direction is a refused coin-flip — no trending extension is pre-assignable the day before CPI.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.12). Direction: none — refused coin-flip, no trending direction pre-assigned (direction hit-rate skipped). Conviction: low — this is a genuine GO day, so a clean-trend pullback-resumption is not impossible, but print-driven first hour + LOW-VIX weakest cohort + two-tier standoff + the chronic resumption no-show all suppress it.

Sizing vs. event risk: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 — invoked only if the full trend→pullback→resumption structure completes within 10:00–12:00. The 14:00 flat means zero exposure into CPI. Neither tonight's ORCL/ADBE prints nor tomorrow's CPI is a today-session skip for this stack; do not pre-emptively stand down for a tomorrow event.

Key levels: SPY prior close 762.42, prior range 761.00–764.45, ATR 5.43, SMA20 768.25 (third session below). QQQ prior close 716.35, prior range 714.04–719.63, ATR 7.39, SMA20 717.30 (first close below — the level the tech-resilience thesis turns on). Both legs' session VWAP at 10:00 and through the retracement window.

Invalidation: both first-hour signals < ±0.30% (modal on a print-heavy contained morning); ADX(14) < 22; wrong VWAP side or flat VWAP slope; trend-qualified but no VWAP-touch pullback by 12:00 — the chronic block; do not force structure; a headline that chops SPY/QQQ off VWAP mid-window (catalyst-gap class → stand down). The one constructive theme to watch, not chase: semis/mega-cap tech relative strength holding against the softer Nasdaq futures — but relative strength is not a VWAP-pullback structure.
