Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-09-pm.md PM: ECHO

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — no Tier-1 scheduled, but CPI Friday Sep 11 (in 2 days) and the live three-leg cost stack carry the tape: oil broke $100 (Brent ~$100.58, first time in 7 weeks, Houthi strikes on Saudi tankers), Canada's up-to-50% tariffs live, and the hawkish-Fed reprice (FedWatch ~56% Sept-hike odds; 10-yr near multi-year highs ~4.80%). FOMC Sep 16. Firm-wide GO.
  • Session character expected: news-driven / two-sided, contained, downside-weighted at the open on oil/tariffs, with tech/semis the offsetting leg. A clean trending extension is not pre-assignable — coin-flip discipline applies (the standing 08-17→08-21 rule on oil/rates/trade days). No clean one-way program guaranteed.
  • VIX regime: 16.29 — LOW (<18), drifting up a third straight session on risk tone, not realized vol. LOW is the weakest cohort for BOTH of my stacks — it suppresses SURGE's momentum structurally (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 elevated) and keeps ECHO's vol/exhaustion gates needing a real-volume day to clear.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 766.06 (below SMA20 768.66 — second session under; a second close below confirms the value-led break) / prior range 765.17–769.69 / ATR(14) 5.43. QQQ prior close 718.43 (above SMA20 717.40) / prior range 715.65–721.86 / ATR(14) 7.61. Two-tier divergence into CPI: value/Dow leg fragile, tech/semis the support.
  • Macro backdrop: Three-leg inflation/cost stack (oil >$100 + Canada tariffs live + hawkish-Fed reprice) into Friday's CPI, with the FOMC Sep 16 as destination — news-driven, contained, downside-weighted, direction refused.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

Setup: conditional, the day's clearest candidate is XLE — but a driver-fade with two-sided character. Lean short-fade only if gates clear. Two Scanner candidates qualify (intrinsic YES): XLE (geopolitical oil supply shock — the day's driver, gap-up) and SPY (broad macro catalyst, gap-down bias but coin-flip).

  1. XLE is the strongest candidate — and the risk. Oil >$100 on a geopolitical supply shock means real volume — the exact condition that clears my chronic vol_ratio gate (1.3274 yesterday on the oil driver, the first clean clear since 08-20). If XLE runs up all day on strong volume, my 15:30 fade is short. But this is the driver-fade loss template (08-10 stop-out -$75.89 on a strengthening energy sector). The nuance from 09-08: yesterday I shorted the same up-driver and won +$123.20 because the exhaustion_score composite (1.7405) discriminated a genuine close-leg exhaustion from a still-bid program. So the fade is live — but only if exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 AND vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 AND the energy leg genuinely exhausts by 15:20, not if it keeps bidding on fresh headlines. Treat XLE as two-sided hostage to headlines, not a clean fade.
  2. SPY is the weak default. Gap-down bias on oil/tariffs, but contained, coin-flip, below 20-day, direction not pre-assignable. SPY only fires if a genuine one-way macro program exhausts — low probability on a two-sided news day, and SPY's exhaustion_score has grazed (0.790, 0.764) more than cleared.
  3. LOW VIX is my weakest cohort — but 09-08 proved the mechanism still fires and wins on a real-volume exhaustible program. The binding question is whether a clean one-way program forms by 15:20 on a two-sided tape. XLE is the most likely to do so (energy volume), hence the conditional lean.

Call: Conditional, lean no-trade on SPY / conditional short-fade on XLE (p_trade 0.30). Direction: short — if a qualifying fade fires, the dominant path is XLE short (energy up all day on the supply shock) fading the up-driver's exhaustion. Conviction: low — real volume candidate (XLE) but two-sided tape + LOW-VIX cohort + driver-fade template all suppress certainty; 09-08 showed the gate-stack must genuinely clear. Sizing: standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget, only if all four gates clear at 15:20 — with the explicit caveat that a qualifying SHORT XLE on a still-strengthening driver is my documented loss template, and the exhaustion_score must be ≥ 0.80 to discriminate exhaustion from a live bid. Invalidation: any one-way program that fails to form by 15:20; a two-sided tape where XLE chops off VWAP mid-day; morning signal < ±0.25%; any fresh oil headline that keeps XLE bidding into the close (still-bid program = stand down, not fade).

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — structural regime mismatch, not a forced call. Every input points away from SURGE's with-trend resumption:

  1. LOW VIX (16.29) is SURGE's weakest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 elevated). The momentum thesis needs elevated vol to shine; this is its floor.
  2. The session character is a news-driven, two-tier, catalyst-gap tape — SURGE's 0/2 loss class. The 07-24 TEMPER learning: on catalyst-gap days the first hour is price discovery, not clean trend establishment — the three-phase structure (trend → measured pullback → resumption) is fundamentally invalid there. Today's oil/tariff headline tape is exactly that character.
  3. The chronic binding gate is pullback_resumption — trend-qualified but no VWAP-touch pullback resumes within the window (≥10 instances since 07-15, including 08-13 with BOTH SPY and QQQ trend-qualified simultaneously). A two-sided news tape makes a clean pullback-and-resume even less likely.
  4. Direction is a refused coin-flip. Downside-weighted at open on oil/tariffs, but tech/semis offset and CPI in 2 days → no clean trending extension pre-assignable. SPY sits below its 20-day (fragile), QQQ above (two-tier) — not a clean single-direction trend backdrop.

SURGE only fires if: a genuine first-hour trend establishes (|signal| ≥ 0.30%, ADX ≥ 22, correct VWAP side, non-flat slope), then a controlled pullback to VWAP (contracting volume ≤ 1.1×, retrace ≤ 61.8%) actually resumes within 10:00–12:00. On a two-sided LOW-VIX news tape that confluence is a low-probability path — and even trend-qualified, the resumption bar has been the chronic no-show. This is regime (structural absence), feeding the active TEMPER session-character/catalyst-gap conversation; not a near-miss to tune.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.12). Direction: none — refused coin-flip, no trending direction pre-assigned (direction hit-rate skipped). Conviction: low — genuine GO day, so a clean-trend pullback-resumption is not impossible, but LOW-VIX weakest cohort + catalyst-gap 0/2 character + chronic resumption no-show all suppress it. Sizing: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00, invoked only if the full trend→pullback→resumption structure completes within the 10:00–12:00 window. Invalidation: a two-sided tape that fails to establish a clean first-hour trend; any intraday oil/tariff headline that chops SPY/QQQ off VWAP; the chronic pullback_resumption block (trend-qualified, no resume) — the standing structural absence, not a near-miss.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-09-09 (Wednesday)

Cadence rule header: Weekly/Friday or same-day-on-trade (WS5). Today is Wednesday 09-09 — a desk-cadence reflection day (reflection cron ran; neither member traded). Period covered: 2026-09-09 (the single live session since the 09-08 reflection; 09-07 was the Labor Day holiday). The desk took no trades — both members stood down on contained, two-sided, LOW-VIX conditions.

Plan reference: desks/house-echo/plans/2026-09-09-plan.md EOD briefing: dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-09-eod.md

What Happened

The second contained session after the holiday break resolved mildly down, exactly as the morning framed it: a two-tier, sub-ATR, direction-not-pre-assignable day (SPY −0.47% closed under its 20-day for a third session, QQQ −0.29% held above, SPY 0.93× ATR / QQQ 0.76× ATR, VIX 16.46 LOW — third straight LOW close drifting higher on the risk stack, not realized vol). The driver held and hardened: oil stayed above $100 all session (the durable supply-shock branch, Brent ~$100.95), the 10-yr pressed to new 52-week highs, and the US–Canada trade war escalated intraday (White House plan to ban certain Canadian products). Value/Dow led lower while mega-cap tech (QQQ) was the resilient offsetting leg. Morning Narrative grade STUCK — event-risk-MEDIUM, durable driver, two-tier polarity, contained character, and direction-refusal all held against a mildly-down resolution. No qualifying setup formed for either Family 2 expression: neither a clean one-way exhaustible program at ECHO's 15:20 close-window, nor a clean first-hour trend + VWAP pullback resumption for SURGE's 10:00–12:00 window.

Desk net P&L today: $0.00 — no trades. The desk's plan (ECHO conditional lean no-trade with a specced XLE short branch, SURGE no-trade on structural regime mismatch) read the day honestly and both engines agreed with their plans.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

ECHO — binding gate: vol_ratio on XLE (0.953 vs 1.2) — a regime stand-down, not a missed setup

The strongest candidate (XLE, the day's durable oil driver, morning signal +1.20%) blocked wide on vol_ratio (0.953 vs the 1.2 floor — a 0.25 miss, not a graze): XLE moved but on below-average session volume, so no institutional program formed to exhaust. This is the well-calibrated stand-down side — oil held its >$100 durable bid into the close (still-bid program), which the fade never trades, and on thin volume there was nothing to fade regardless. The SPY morning_signal −0.24% (0.01pp near-miss, ECHO's tightest of the season) was on the weak-default instrument and would not have qualified a genuine fade even had it cleared.

Regime or calibration? Regime. The binding gate missed wide (0.953 vs 1.2) — a contained second day on a durable driver produced no real XLE participation — which is absence of an exhaustible program, distinct from the recent exhaustion_score grazes (0.790, 0.764) that were volume-clearing days coming up just short on the composite. The 09-08 win (vol_ratio 1.3274) showed the mechanism fires on real participation; today confirms it correctly waits when the driver holds but the volume does not. No gate misbehavior, no repeated-threshold cluster, no tweak, no TEMPER conversation warranted.

SURGE — binding gate: first_hour_signal on SPY (−0.29% vs ±0.30%) — the chronic pullback_resumption gate was never reached; regime

For the first time in the no-trade stretch, SURGE blocked at the first-hour trend-establishment gate on both legs rather than at the chronic pullback_resumption gate — SPY −0.29% vs the ±0.30% floor (0.01pp near-miss, its tightest of the season, and directionally correct: SPY closed −0.47%), QQQ +0.21%. Passing the first-hour floor is not the binding constraint on SURGE's edge; even a cleared first-hour signal has led to no trade on the 09+ trend-qualified sessions where pullback_resumption denied a VWAP-touch retracement. On this two-sided LOW-VIX news tape there was no clean first-hour impulse to even begin the three-phase structure.

Regime or calibration? Regime. The 0.01pp graze is on a preliminary gate, not the mechanism gate, and sits in the documented catalyst-absence band (09-02 → 09-09, 0.01–0.05pp sub-floor grazes on LOW-VIX two-sided sessions) — consistent with the 08-14 finding and the active session-character conversation. No gate misbehavior, no repeated-threshold cluster against the binding mechanism. No tweak; the session-character question stays the standing TEMPER deliverable.

Action needed?NoNo (active TEMPER session-character conversation carries the lesson)

Narrative finding: the two Family 2 expressions sat on opposite sides of the same two-tier down day and both correctly declined to trade. ECHO's close-leg fade needed a real-volume exhaustible program by 15:20 — XLE gave it a strong directional move (+1.20%) on below-average volume (0.953), which is a durable still-bid program with nothing to exhaust, not a fade; the contrast to 09-08 (vol_ratio 1.3274, winning fade) is the cleanest demonstration yet that ECHO's gate is a participation gate, not a price-direction one. SURGE's with-trend resumption needed a clean first-hour impulse that then pulled back to VWAP and resumed — neither leg produced the impulse (SPY grazed 0.01pp sub-floor on a contained downside drift), and the chronic resumption precondition was never even reached. Both plans agreed with their engines — a clean, well-calibrated stand-down period on a day where the composite fell mildly down exactly as the refusal predicted.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • ECHO — exhaustion_score binding-gate observation: the 09-08 clean clearance (1.7405) stands as a favorable regime data point; today adds the complementary point that XLE blocked wide on vol_ratio (0.953) despite a strong morning signal — a contained second day on the durable driver did not reproduce the 09-08 volume environment. Watch stays live; no tweak (T=0.80 in-sample, must not be re-optimized). Flagged for learnings.md (monitoring).
  • ECHO — plan/engine enforcement gap: stayed latent (no divergence). Open.
  • ECHO — XBI exclusion review (WR < 50% over 15+ live trades): sub-book n=2, WR 0.0% — NOT triggered (needs n≥15). Carried forward.
  • ECHO — driver-fade nuance: 09-08's winning driver-sector fade continues to be read as the exhaustion composite discriminating exhaustion from a live bid; today (durable driver, still-bid, no fade) was the correct counterpart stand-down. No new data point beyond the monitoring flag.
  • SURGE — session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation (escalated 08-31, 4th class loss): open, unchanged. New data point today: SURGE blocked at first_hour_signal on both legs (SPY −0.29%, 0.01pp — tightest of the season), never reaching the chronic resumption gate; the catalyst-absence band now spans 09-02 → 09-09. Carried to the next Desk Review as a sizing-(a)-shaped candidate; do not touch the gate.
  • SURGE — plan/engine enforcement gap (shared with ECHO): dormant (stand-downs honored). Open.
  • SURGE — event-day skip diagnostic (resolved 2026-07-17, MIXED): no event-day test this period (LOW scheduled risk); the per-type-skip question stays a TEMPER conversation.
  • SURGE — 2023 PF 0.95 watch: rolling 6-month PF monitor, no trigger this period.
  • SURGE — ADX re-tune watch (moderate-trend 22–30 vs strong-trend ≥30): watch, not an intervention; no new data this period.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Desk-cadence reflection, 09-09 desk net $0.00 — no trades by either member on a two-tier, sub-ATR, mildly-down day (SPY −0.47%, QQQ −0.29%, VIX 16.46 LOW, oil held >$100, Canada tariffs escalated; Morning Narrative STUCK). ECHO stood down correctly: its strongest candidate XLE moved +1.20% but blocked wide on vol_ratio (0.953 vs 1.2 — no exhaustible program on a durable still-bid driver), with a 0.01pp morning_signal graze on SPY (weak default); regime, no tweak, monitoring flag filed; cumulative −$83.55 (5W/4L), SPRT CONTINUE (+0.586). SURGE stood down on no first-hour signal on either leg — SPY grazed −0.29% vs ±0.30% (0.01pp, tightest of the season, directionally correct vs the −0.47% close), QQQ +0.21%; the chronic resumption gate was never reached; regime feeding the active session-character TEMPER conversation; cumulative +$482.98, SPRT CONTINUE (+1.131). Both engines agreed with their plans; no boundary risk. Next session Thu Sep 10 (MEDIUM — PPI/Jobless Claims/Wholesale/Existing Home Sales run-up, Oracle after close); CPI Fri Sep 11.
