Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-09-08-pm.md PM: DELTA
Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: LOW (scheduled). No Tier-1 today — NFIB already printed (98.7), NY Fed SCE ~11:00 AM and Consumer Credit 3:00 PM are LOW impact. CPI Fri 09-11 is DELTA's next hard-skip; FOMC 09-16 behind it. The live risk is the geopolitical oil escalation, not the calendar: Brent >$99 (Houthi strikes on Saudi Aramco — Jazan/Abha/Jizan, 73 wounded) layered on the US–Iran tanker war.
- Session character expected: News-driven / two-sided, modest risk-off open — NOT a clean trend. First session in 4 days (post-Labor-Day). Downside-weighted at the open (oil >$99), but the Iran–Oman Hormuz route deal reported "in final stages / days away" is the live counterweight, and tech is holding relatively — Dow ~-0.7%, S&P ~-0.2%, Nasdaq near flat. Direction genuinely not pre-assignable for the session.
- VIX regime: LOW (15.70, up +0.40) — DELTA's best-performing regime (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20) and well under the 30 hard-skip. Regime is favorable; no VIX-based stand-down.
- Key levels: DELTA's only load-bearing number is the leader's first-hour return measured off the 09:30 cash open, checked at 09:55 vs the ±1.5% floor. Instrument reconciliation (briefing is Alpaca-verified and shows no semi print; web-filled): NVDA pre-market ~flat (+0.2%, ~230.8 vs the 230.36 Fri close) — consistent with the flat-Nasdaq read. Broad "chip selloff -2/-5%" articles are stale prior-Iran-episode snapshots (07-06/08-18) and are not today's tape, consistent with the briefing/watchlist's discard discipline. TSMC+ASML today announced a High-NA photomask industry initiative (mild constructive, idiosyncratic supply-chain news for the laggard legs).
- Macro backdrop: Oil-supply escalation (stagflation fuel) + hawkish-Fed reprice (~60% Sept-hike odds, 10-yr ~4.79% near three-year highs) + a live Canada–US tariff escalation — the geo/rates/trade coin-flip profile; the desk refuses the broad-direction call.
DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM), LONG-only
Call: No clean LONG setup expected — LOW event risk and firm GO mean the session is technically open, but the escalation-open shape is structurally unfavorable to DELTA's up-branch, which has been starved for ~5 weeks and is now watching for its trigger rather than assuming it stays absent. p_trade 0.10, direction none, conviction low. Flat by default; trade only if a leader actually clears the first-hour ±1.5% floor.
- Setup present: possible but unlikely. Today is not a hard-skip (no Tier-1; LOW event risk, firm GO), so the engine will evaluate both pairs. But the setup DELTA needs is a leader (NVDA or AMD) to print a first-hour ≥ +1.5% up-move measured off the 09:30 open. Against that on today's tape: a modest risk-off open on an oil escalation biases the semis toward flat-to-down (the disabled-SHORT side) rather than an up-surge, and a broad macro/geo driver like this reprices the whole semi complex systematically — the wrong shape for the idiosyncratic supply-chain cascade DELTA was cleared on. NVDA opening ~flat (+0.2%) gives no pre-market hint of an up-impulse forming. The only in-favor thread: tech is the relatively-holding leg (vs. the oil/consumer Dow weakness), NVDA held leadership into the holiday (Fri NVDA +1.8%, chips on the upswing Friday per IBD), and the TSMC+ASML High-NA initiative is constructive idiosyncratic news — but none of that alone moves a leader ≥1.5% off a quiet, flat pre-market.
- Up-branch status (the honest watch): The reflection flagged this as the load-bearing question — NVDA has grazed the +1.5% floor three times inside ~0.5pp (09-02 +1.23%, 09-03 +1.02%, plus AMD +1.20% on 08-31), twice on the primary NVDA→ASML cell, and the desk pre-committed that a third NVDA up-graze inside ~0.3pp turns regime into a TEMPER calibration question. That escalation is not advanced by today's forecast — today is not a clean two-tier contained tape (the texture where the grazing happened); it is an escalation-open, so an NVDA sub-threshold flat day carries no calibration evidence either way. The flag stays queued.
- Sizing vs. event risk: Standard 0.75% single position if a leader clears — no size reduction warranted. Event risk is LOW (no Tier-1 today), the book holds one position max, exits hard-flat at 15:30 (no overnight exposure), and VIX 15.70 is DELTA's best regime. Nothing about today argues for scaling below the pre-registered risk budget. The real gate is frequency (the setup almost certainly won't fire), not risk per trade.
- Session-character fit: A news-driven two-sided escalation tape is not a pairs-convergence day. DELTA does not call broad direction (direction-refusal is the desk discipline), and its mechanism only fires on an idiosyncratic first-hour leader impulse — which today's macro-driven shape suppresses. Low-session-fit day for the setup; the correct stance is flat-until-cleared.
- Invalidation / no-trade reasons: (1) Leaders opening broadly down ≥1.5% together on the escalation = the disabled-SHORT side (LONG-only book); by rule no trade and not a missed LONG. (2) A leader first-hour move that is plainly broad macro repricing (whole-complex, one-way) rather than a supply-chain cascade — the same structural stand-down DELTA applied through the oil-shock mornings. (3) Any intraday VIX spike to ≥30 closes consideration. No additional pre-registered stand-down beyond the existing hard-skips (CPI Fri 09-11) applies today.
- Book state carries forward: Cumulative -$442.33 across 10 trades (SPRT n=10, LLR -0.159, CONTINUE). AMD→TSM sub-book n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191 stays queued for TEMPER (the 09-05 stop-calibration diagnostic read NO — widening the stop does not rescue that cell, so this is a signal/regime watch, not a parameter fix). NVDA→ASML clean cell 2W/0L is the quality cell and the only one whose trigger DELTA is genuinely watching for today.
- Watch items (informational): Whether NVDA decouples and produces the ≥1.5% up-impulse the primary cell has been grazing toward; whether the Hormuz route-deal headline reverses the open mid-session (a de-escalation rally could finally give the semis the up-leg); and whether the semis' Friday leadership survives the oil escalation into the next tradeable window.
