Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: HIGH — Tier-1 August NFP (8:30 AM ET), the week's pivot and read-ahead into the Sept 15–16 FOMC. Cons ~+55K (cluster +53–58K; MUFG +70K), prior −23K (July hard miss that cut Sept hike odds). U/R 4.1% cons, AHE +0.3% m/m. Firm-wide NO-GO — scanner Firm-Wide Status is explicit: NFP today, "All desks hold; no trade inputs this session." This is a deterministic hard-skip for both of my stacks, not a judgment call.
  • Session character expected: direction unknown until the 8:30 AM print, then trending. This is NOT a contained pre-positioning day (EOD directive #2): a data surprise on top of a live ~50/50 rate signal can break the tape at 1.6× ATR or more. Post-print structure forms in the direction the print resolves rate expectations — soft-print risk-on extension (rate-sensitive growth leads) or hot-print risk-off (hike repricing, value defends). Pre-assigning direction before the print is the error the standing direction-refusal discipline (now 9-for-9) exists to prevent — but today it is moot, because the hard skip removes both engines from the tape entirely.
  • VIX regime: 14.18 — LOW (<18), prior close 14.32. My weakest cohort for both stacks on a normal day; on an NFP day it is background, not a gate input — the skip preempts gate evaluation.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 773.12 (above SMA20 769.16) / prior range 767.47–774.01 / ATR(14) 5.48. QQQ prior close 717.67 (at SMA20 717.71) / prior range 709.73–718.89 / ATR(14) 8.17. Both indices have recouped the multi-session pullback after Thursday's Waller-driven relief rally (SPY +1.04% / QQQ +1.18%, SPY true range 1.62× ATR); the mid-August record region is back in reach.
  • Macro backdrop: The September FOMC is a genuine ~50/50 hike/hold coin flip — Warsh hawkish at Jackson Hole vs. Waller's "we can wait one meeting" hold-lean — and today's NFP is the data that decides which regime the market carries in. Soft print locks the hold and extends the rate-sensitive relief leg; hot print / hot wages re-ignites the hike leg. Oil (Brent ~$95 / WTI ~$90.7, easing but up big on the week on the US–Iran / Hormuz escalation) is NOT the driver — the Fed/NFP leg outranks it. Geopolitical weekend-gap risk into Tuesday (Labor Day Mon Sep 7 closed) is a holding consideration, not an intraday input. Single-name color (LULU −18% premarket guidance cut, CIEN/IOT after-close) is non-trade context on a NO-GO day.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

No trade — deterministic NFP hard skip, and no candidate universe exists today regardless. This is the cleanest stand-down of the month, and it is a strategy outcome, not a forecast. Strategy v7's Stage 1 Step 2 is unambiguous: "If any hard skip is flagged (FOMC/CPI/NFP/VIX≥30), the session is done — no evaluation, no trades." The scanner's Firm-Wide Status flags NFP NO-GO, and its Directional Catalyst Instruments section is N/A — there are literally no candidates to screen today (no EIA, no FDA decision, no intrinsic catalyst). Even if the 8:30 print produces a textbook gate-confirmed one-way program that runs and exhausts by 15:20 — which the post-print trending character genuinely could — the skip preempts gate evaluation by design.

  • The disciplined read here matters precisely because today's tape could deliver the cleanest close-leg setup of the month: a post-NFP trending leg that exhausts by 15:20 is exactly the exhaustible program my mechanism is built to fade. That is not a signal to override the skip. NFP is a hard skip that closes the session before any evaluation; a clean post-print program today is foregone by design, not a near-miss. The 08-14 learning ("no exhaustible program forms on LOW-VIX sub-ATR") and its inverse both apply today — but neither licenses a trade through a Tier-1 skip.
  • XLE/energy is not a candidate (no EIA Friday; oil easing and not the driver per EOD directive #1). XLE is not active. XBI is not active (no FDA decision). LULU/CIEN/IOT are single-name event color, not directional-catalyst candidates — and on NO-GO they are non-trade inputs regardless.
  • The one thing I watch is engine honesty: the recurring plan/engine gap (documented 08-19/08-20, where the engine traded XBI against the plan) means a qualifying engine fire on an NFP NO-GO day is a logging event, not a validated setup. The scanner publishes NO-GO and no candidates; my Stage 1 closes the session. If the engine somehow evaluates anyway, that is a gap to flag, not a trade to keep.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.02 — the residual is the engine-honesty tail only, not a real setup). Direction: none — no directional lean, the skip preempts direction entirely (direction hit-rate skipped). Conviction: high — this is a deterministic hard-skip on a day with no candidate universe; the no-trade call is as certain as a forecast gets. Sizing: not invoked — standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget would apply only on a tradeable session; this is not one. Invalidation: any engine fire at 15:30 is a plan/engine enforcement gap to log and escalate (the recurring finding), never a held position; nothing about the post-print tape converts a NO-GO skip into a trade.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade — deterministic NFP hard skip, baked into the locked v9 mechanism at the code level. SURGE's hard-skip list is explicit and unchanged: FOMC, CPI, NFP, PCE, and QQQ (mega-cap) earnings dates. NFP is in that list, and SURGE's cleared code enforces the skip via its is_event_day machinery — every live trade logs is_event_day=False. Today is an NFP day, so the engine will not evaluate. This is not a session-character stand-down like yesterday's ISM-in-window call (which was desk judgment); it is the mechanism's own locked event-day skip.

  • I am honest about the tension the TEMPER MIXED finding (ratified 08-01) surfaces: on event days the skip is off, SURGE's holdout event-day-only trades printed PF 12.11 on ~10 trades, driven largely by NFP and CPI winners — evidence that a with-trend momentum engine can excel on the very days it skips. Today's post-print trending character is exactly the class where SURGE's resumption logic would want to be live. But none of that overrides the locked skip. The MIXED verdict produced no live-path change (per-type skip is a TEMPER conversation + candidate for a targeted future backtest, not a unilateral tweak). Today the engine sits out by design; a strong post-NFP trending leg is a foregone observation, not a near-miss on my book.
  • SPY/QQQ both sit at/above their 20-day SMAs after Thursday's clean trending-up relief day — a constructive backdrop were this a GO day. It is not. VIX 14.18 LOW is SURGE's weakest cohort on a normal day; on NFP it is background. No candidate, no direction, no sizing question.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.0 — the engine's NFP skip is deterministic and code-enforced; there is no misfire tail of consequence). Direction: none — the skip preempts direction entirely (direction hit-rate skipped). Conviction: high — a code-level event-day skip on a named hard-skip date is the most certain no-trade call in SURGE's book. Sizing: not invoked — standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 applies only on a tradeable session. Invalidation: any entry attempt on an NFP day is a mechanism-enforcement bug to log and escalate (the code's is_event_day should block it before any gate runs), never a position to hold. The per-type-skip question stays a TEMPER conversation, not today's action.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-09-04 (Friday)

Cadence rule header: Weekly/Friday or same-day-on-trade (WS5). Today is Friday 09-04 — the weekly Friday cadence trigger (reflect). Period covered: 2026-09-01 through 2026-09-04 (the four sessions since the last desk reflection on 2026-08-31, which was a same-day-on-trade reflection because SURGE traded). No desk member traded on any of the four sessions.

What Happened

A four-session week that split cleanly into the two faces of Family 2's LOW-VIX problem, then ended on the week's one deterministic Tier-1 hard skip. No member traded; desk net P&L $0.00. The week was: Tue 09-01 a contained geopolitical risk-off chop (two-sided US–Iran/oil escalation, 1.4× ATR, SPY −0.68% / QQQ −1.26%, no clean trend); Wed 09-02 a contained mild-up (SPY +0.46% / QQQ +0.24%, sub-ATR, oil firmer to mid-$90s); Thu 09-03 the week's cleanest trending-up relief rally (Waller hold-lean, SPY +1.04% / QQQ +1.18%, both near session highs, SPY true range 1.62× ATR); and Fri 09-04 a hot-NFP Tier-1 (+162K ≈ 3× beat, hike-odds back up) that nevertheless resolved contained two-tier (Dow −0.51% / S&P −0.38% vs QQQ +0.20%, both sub-ATR, VIX 14.53 LOW) — a pre-holiday, partially pre-priced print. VIX stayed LOW all week (14.18–16.73).

The desk read the week honestly: ECHO and SURGE each forecast no trade on all four sessions (all low conviction except the high-conviction NFP skip), and both engines agreed by not firing. The week is not a near-miss story — it is the LOW-VIX structural-absence regime the desk has documented since 08-14 (no exhaustible program for the close-leg fade; no clean first-move + pullback for the with-trend resumption), now with a hard-skip day that removes both engines by design.

Desk net P&L this period: $0.00 (no member traded). ECHO unchanged at −$206.75, SURGE unchanged at +$482.98 — both cumulative figures identical to the 08-31 reflection because neither member traded in the window. Both SPRT trajectories CONTINUE and comfortably mid-channel: ECHO LLR +0.184 (+2.761 to CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST, −3.128 to DEGRADED); SURGE LLR +1.131 (+1.813 to CONSISTENT-WITH-BACKTEST, −4.075 to DEGRADED). No boundary risk on either stack. ECHO's XBI sub-book (n=2, WR 0.0%) still well short of the n=15 exclusion trigger.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

ECHO — binding gate migrated from vol_ratio to exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 as SPY volume finally cleared → regime, not calibration (n=2, below the clustering bar; watch)

This is the notable mechanism event of the period. Across the entire June–August live book the binding gate was essentially always vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 — SPY blocked wide (0.55–1.19) on the LOW-VIX tape and the close-leg fade had nothing to fade. This week SPY cleared vol_ratio on two of four sessions — 1.205 on 09-01 (the first SPY clear in a month) and 1.335 on 09-03 (the highest sustained SPY volume reading in the live book) — and on both the operative binding gate shifted to exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 (floor T=0.80 = vol_ratio × |morning signal_return|), grazed twice: 0.790 (0.010 under) on 09-01 and 0.764 (0.036 under) on 09-03.

Regime or calibration? Regime, on three grounds. (1) The two grazes are on structurally distinct sessions — 09-01 a two-sided geopolitical chop (flat last hour) and 09-03 a clean trending-up relief day — so there is no repeated-threshold cluster on one session type; the vote-gate clustering diagnostic (≥3 same-value, same-character hits) is not met at n=2. (2) The 09-03 exhaustion denial reads as correct, not too-tight: signal +0.57% (up) → ECHO fades short, but the day closed +1.04% near session highs — the up-trend had not exhausted, and fading it is the 08-04/08-10 short-loss template. exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 would have required |signal| ≳ 0.60% at that volume; a +0.57% morning that kept running to +1.04% is not an exhausted program, and the composite correctly kept ECHO off it. (3) The behavior is exactly the AND-logic the mechanism is built on: each gate binds only once the earlier ones clear — vol_ratio binding all summer then exhaustion_score binding the moment volume clears is the gate stack working as designed, and it is consistent with the 08-14 TEMPER finding (on LOW VIX, either no program forms or, now that volume is finally showing up, the day's |signal| is too modest / the trend not yet exhausted to produce a genuine exhaustion composite).

Action: none. T=0.80 is in-sample-derived and must not be re-optimized in production (TEMPER Phase-3 monitoring condition #6, Key Rule #5). n=2 is below the N≥3 clustering bar, so this is an initial characterization, not a regression — too early for a regime-vs-calibration determination to firm. The thing to watch: whether exhaustion_score keeps grazing 0.76–0.80 as SPY volume clears — if it accumulates to ≥3 structurally-distinct thin grazes, that becomes a calibration-flavored conversation worth a TEMPER look (framed around the exhaustion_score distribution validation, never a unilateral tweak of T). The mild regime signal worth recording positively: vol_ratio clearing twice in a week is the first real uptick in ECHO's tradeable-volume conditions all summer. ECHO's no-trade forecasts were clean all period (09-04 p_trade 0.02 high-conv on a deterministic skip).

SURGE — binding gate: catalyst absence / no three-phase VWAP-pullback formed (plus the NFP hard skip) → regime, not calibration

SURGE produced no trades and no near-firing setup across all four sessions — every live session was blocked before a three-phase structure formed, and 09-04 was the deterministic code-level NFP skip. The blocks were: 09-01 vwap_side on both legs (price on the wrong side of VWAP at entry — the engine agreed with the stand-down); 09-02 first-hour signal sub-floor (SPY +0.21%, QQQ −0.16%); 09-03 SPY vwap_side + QQQ first-hour +0.27% (a 0.03pp graze of the ±0.30% floor); 09-04 NFP hard skip (is_event_day, locked in the v9 mechanism). None of these were numeric-gate misbehaviors — the first-hour blocks at 0.21–0.27pp are the documented LOW-VIX catalyst-absence signature, not a threshold being repeatedly grazed at a calibration-relevant level.

Regime or calibration? Regime. The whole week sat in the catalyst-gap / price-discovery / NFP-week session family — the exact class where SURGE has structurally no with-trend edge (the active TEMPER session-character conversation, escalated 08-31 from the 4th catalyst-gap loss). Two data points stand out and both point to regime, not a gate problem: (1) 09-01 was the first catalyst-gap session without a fire since the 08-31 escalation — both legs blocked on vwap_side, i.e. the geopolitical gap did not resolve into a clean trend-qualified structure, weakly supporting that the three-phase structure is genuinely rare on this tape (the clean-with-trend branch the stand-down conversation is really about). (2) 09-03 was the week's cleanest trending-up day — SURGE's preferred, with-trend class, the day the engine is built to earn on — and it still did not fire: QQQ first-hour +0.27% grazed 0.03pp under the floor and SPY was on the wrong side of VWAP at entry despite closing +1.04% near highs. On a LOW-VIX tape even a genuine trend day can fail to produce the measured first-move + VWAP-touch pullback the three-phase structure needs. That is structural absence (the resumption bar is a precondition, not an adjustable threshold), not calibration evidence.

Action: none on the gate. The active TEMPER session-character filter conversation (from the 08-31 escalation) continues to carry the class-level lesson and remains the standing deliverable; 09-01 (engine agreement) and 09-03 (clean-trend-day-still-gated) are the two new data points to feed it. SURGE's stand-down forecasts were honest and well-calibrated (p_trade 0.12–0.18 low-conv on the live days, 0.0 high-conv on the NFP skip), correctly reflecting the 08-31 frontmatter self-critique. SPRT unchanged at CONTINUE — no boundary risk.

Narrative finding: the week shows the two Family 2 expressions starving for opposite reasons on the same LOW-VIX tape, both correctly forecasting their own no-trade. ECHO's constraint finally loosened at the volume leg (SPY vol_ratio 1.205 / 1.335 — real, mild tradeable-condition uptick) only to bind at the exhaustion composite — and the binding read correctly refused a fade of a 09-03 up-trend that was not exhausted. SURGE's constraint never loosened: not one session produced a clean first-move + VWAP-pullback three-phase, and even the week's clean trend day (09-03, SPY +1.04%) was gated sub-floor on QQQ and vwap-side on SPY. The shared structural fact is that LOW VIX (14.18–16.73) suppresses the clean one-way directional day both mechanisms need — ECHO needs an exhaustible program (volume now shows up but magnitude/exhaustion doesn't), SURGE needs a clean trend establishment with a retracement (the geopolitical / NFP-week character denies it). Both desks' engines agreed with their plans all week — a clean execution period with zero plan/engine divergence (a useful contrast to the 08-31 session-character fire on SURGE).

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • ECHO — exhaustion_score binding-gate observation (NEW): vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 cleared on SPY twice in the window (09-01 1.205, 09-03 1.335) and the operative binding gate migrated to exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80, grazed at 0.790 and 0.764 on structurally distinct sessions. Regime, n=2 — below the N≥3 clustering bar; too early to firm. Flag for learnings.md (do not append). Watch whether it clusters to ≥3 distinct thin grazes; any framing is the exhaustion_score distribution validation, never a unilateral T=0.80 tweak (in-sample, must not be re-optimized).
  • ECHO — plan/engine enforcement gap: stayed latent this period (engine agreed by blocking on all live days; NFP skip held). Open.
  • ECHO — XBI exclusion review (WR < 50% over 15+ live trades): sub-book n=2, WR 0.0% — NOT triggered (needs n≥15). Carried forward.
  • SURGE — session-character / catalyst-gap filter conversation (escalated from watch to active in the 08-31 reflection, 4th class loss): open, unchanged this period (no new catalyst-gap fire). Two new data points to carry: 09-01 engine agreement (first catalyst-gap session without a fire) and 09-03 clean-trend-day-still-gated (with-trend edge absent on LOW VIX even off a Tier-1-adjacent trend day). Carried to the next Desk Review as a sizing-(a)-shaped candidate; do not touch the gate.
  • SURGE — plan/engine enforcement gap (shared with ECHO): dormant this period (stand-downs honored by the engine on all three live days). Open.
  • SURGE — event-day skip diagnostic (resolved 2026-07-17, MIXED): the blanket skip covers only scheduled calendar events — the code-level NFP skip held cleanly 09-04. The per-type-skip question (NFP/CPI winners vs FOMC dog) stays a TEMPER conversation, not a live change.
  • SURGE — 2023 PF 0.95 watch: rolling 6-month PF monitor, no trigger this period.
  • SURGE — ADX re-tune watch (moderate-trend 22–30 vs strong-trend ≥30): watch, not an intervention; no new data this period.

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Four-session week (09-01→09-04), zero trades and $0 desk P&L — both members forecast no-trade on every session and both engines agreed by blocking. ECHO's binding gate finally migrated off the month-long vol_ratio wide-block: SPY cleared vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 twice (1.205, 1.335) and the operative gate became exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80, grazed at 0.790 and 0.764 on structurally distinct days — regime, n=2, no tweak (T=0.80 is in-sample and must not be touched), flagged for learnings.md as an early mechanism-shift observation. SURGE was catalyst-absent all week (no three-phase formed; the code-level NFP skip held cleanly on 09-04), with the two standout reads being the 09-01 engine agreement with the catalyst-gap stand-down and the 09-03 clean-trend-day that still fired nothing — regime, feeding the already-active TEMPER session-character conversation. Both SPRT trajectories CONTINUE (ECHO +0.184, SURGE +1.131), no boundary risk; desk net $0.00. Next session Tue Sep 8 after Labor Day; next Tier-1 CPI Sep 11.
