Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: MEDIUM — the US–Iran / Hormuz oil escalation is now easing, not firming. Trump frames the latest strikes "short-lived," reiterates US control of Hormuz; WTI has snapped its 3-day rally and slipped toward the low-$90s; crude flows through the Strait still ~8M bbl/day (supply holding). Today's own macro is MEDIUM-impact ISM Services (10:00 ET) plus low-impact Jobless Claims (8:30); NFP is TOMORROW (Fri Sep 4) — today is the pre-positioning session into it. Firm-wide GO (no Tier-1 today). Carried direction-refusal directive (8-for-8, from 09-02 EOD's STUCK grade): on a LOW-VIX, live-but-easing geopolitical-clock, sub-ATR pre-NFP day, do not pre-assign broad-index direction; weight the oil/Hormuz downside at least equal to any relief-driven single-name bid, and treat the flat-to-firm tone as a conditional, not a base.
- Session character expected: contained / flat-to-firm / pre-NFP positioning, direction unknown. A sub-ATR-style, LOW-VIX consolidation day on a live-but-easing geopolitical clock. Expect structure not to form cleanly until after ISM at 10:00; a hawkish/soft data surprise or a fresh escalation headline into the close could set up the gap into NFP. Not a trending session — a positioning session. (Yesterday's 1.4× ATR note applies again: the contained pre-market read can understate the realized day, but today's setup leans genuinely quiet.)
- VIX regime: 15.40 — LOW (<18), ticking up (+0.20) but still the desk's weakest cohort for both stacks. On this regime, the standing 08-14 TEMPER finding is the operative prior: a LOW-VIX sub-ATR tape produces no exhaustible program — ECHO's vol_ratio gate blocks wide (0.79–1.04 vs 1.2 floor) and SURGE's first-hour signal prints under the ±0.30% floor. Expect both engines to block on low-volume/impulse, not to graze a threshold.
- Key levels: SPY prior close 765.13 / prior range 761.74–766.43 / SMA20 768.93 (price below) / ATR(14) 5.09. QQQ prior close 709.32 / prior range 705.18–709.77 / SMA20 717.56 (price below) / ATR(14) 7.92. VIX 15.40. Oil: WTI low-$90s (easing). Both indices in the multi-session pullback below their 20-day SMAs, flat-to-firm off Wednesday's mild contained advance.
- Macro backdrop: The oil-supply shock is de-escalating into NFP-eve — relief (Tuesday's oil-paring growth recovery) has stalled on a flat tape, and the real pivot is tomorrow's payrolls.
ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)
No trade remains the base case, and today's easing oil removes the one near-firing branch of the last two sessions. Yesterday's read was "stand ready on XLE, firmer oil makes an elevated-volume energy up-program closer to qualifying than all month." Today inverts that: oil is easing, not firming (WTI low-$90s, snapped 3-day rally, Trump "short-lived"), which is exactly the regime the 08-14 learning says produces no exhaustible program — ECHO's vol_ratio gate blocks wide (0.79–1.04 vs 1.2 floor), so there is no gate-confirmed one-way program to fade by 15:20.
- XLE — the only genuine candidate (EIA crude 10:30, holiday-shifted Thursday; intrinsic YES, hard-skip CLEAR), but the fade branches are both weak. (1) The SHORT branch (fade a gate-confirmed energy up-program) needs an elevated-volume oil bid that ran all day and demonstrably exhausted by 15:20 — the direct 8/10/8/14 loss template if the bid is still being bid. Today oil is easing, so an up-program is less likely to form, not more; and per the scanner's own note, do not pre-fade a still-live geopolitical bid. (2) The LONG branch (fade an energy down-program on oil easing) is mechanically legitimate — but on VIX 15.40 LOW / sub-ATR, the down-move is a modest give-back of Tuesday's bid, unlikely to print vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 + ADX ≥ 20 + exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80. The EIA print at 10:30 is context (cons −0.40M, last week −4.45M first draw since July), not itself a 15:20-qualifying program.
- SPY — default, weakest-rated candidate, no pre-assign. A broad down-program on the flat tape faded long is possible only if a genuine one-way program forms and exhausts; carried direction-refusal says do not pre-assign broad-index direction into NFP-eve. A mechanical long-SPY-fade on a qualifying down-program is legitimate; a forced pre-assigned reach is not.
- XBI — NOT active. No FDA approval today (Ionis zilganersen PDUFA is Sep 22, not today). XBI is not a candidate.
Call: No trade base case (p_trade 0.25). Direction: short — if a qualifying fade fires at all, it is most likely a gate-confirmed energy up-program faded short at 15:30 on a demonstrably exhausted oil bid; the long-SPY/long-XLE down-program fade is the secondary mechanical branch, deliberately un-pre-assigned under direction-refusal. Conviction: low (this is the LOW-VIX no-program regime per 08-14; both fade branches need a program that today's easing, quiet tape argues against). Sizing stays standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget — no event sizing, no overnight risk (hard flat 15:58). Invalidation: any energy/XLE fade where the oil bid is still being bid at 15:20 (the 8/10/8/14 loss template) rather than demonstrably exhausted; any qualifying fade without all four gates passing at 15:20; any single-name / defense / divergence reach; any forced SPY fade against the direction-refusal directive.
SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)
No trade expected — the deliberate stand-down in the catalyst-gap / price-discovery session class (4-for-4 losing: 07-09, 07-23, 08-24, 08-31, under an active TEMPER session-character conversation) is reinforced again by a catalyst landing directly in the 10:00–12:00 entry window, on the weakest possible VIX cohort. Today is not a hard-skip (no FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE/QQQ-earnings; ISM and Jobless Claims are not in the skip list), so the engine evaluates normally — but the session-character stand-down is the desk's call, and the tape argues for it.
- ISM Services at 10:00 ET lands inside the entry window, exactly the redirect risk that defines this loss-zone class: the first-hour signal (09:30–10:00) that feeds the window is pre-ISM positioning noise, and the 10:00 print can redirect the session precisely as structure would be forming. NFP-eve pre-positioning on a flat tape is the least clean-trend backdrop there is.
- VIX 15.40 LOW is SURGE's weakest cohort. On the quiet-drift, LOW-VIX sub-ATR tape the first-hour signal has routinely printed 0.10–0.25pp under the ±0.30% floor — no impulse to confirm a trend-qualified first move (the 08-14 block-wide reading applies here too: the resumption needs a real first move to retrace from, and a flat positioning session denies it).
- The 09-01 data point carries: the last catalyst-day the engine agreed with the stand-down (both SPY and QQQ blocked on vwap_side), the clean three-phase being rare on this tape. Today's contained flat-to-firm pre-NFP character is the same shape.
Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.12). Direction: short — if the engine does fire a mechanical three-phase, it is most likely a down-move resumption on a flat-to-firm tape that tilts modestly lower post-ISM; but this is a mechanical-tape read, not with-trend conviction, and direction-refusal applies to broad-index direction. Conviction: low. Sizing: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 — not invoked on a stand-down day. The non-zero branch is a genuinely clean, trend-qualified three-phase forming after ISM settles and retracing to VWAP with contracting volume — not the forecast. Invalidation / stand-down condition: the pre-NFP, LOW-VIX, catalyst-in-window character keeps this in the loss-zone class under the active session-character conversation; no trade is the well-calibrated base case.
