Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the US–Iran / Strait-of-Hormuz escalation is EASING, not spiking: Trump "short-lived," crude snapping a 3-day rally, flows ~8M bbl/day holding. No Tier-1 macro today (the hard skips — FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE — all clear). NFP is TOMORROW (09-04), DELTA's hard-skip day — but today itself is tradeable, and DELTA's 15:30 hard flat carries zero overnight exposure into both the geopolitical clock and tomorrow's print. Today's own catalysts: 8:30 Jobless Claims (off DELTA's window) and 10:00 ISM Services (lands exactly on DELTA's entry — the hazard of the day). After close: LULU/CIEN/IOT report (irrelevant to DELTA's intraday). Firm-wide status: GO.
  • Session character expected: contained / ranging / flat-to-firm, pre-NFP positioning — sub-ATR-style, low-VIX consolidation off the easing oil bid. Direction unknown and not pre-assigned (carried 8-for-8 direction-refusal discipline), but this is a materially calmer tape than the shock mornings (08-31 → 09-02): oil easing + yields off highs → the rate-sensitive growth/AI leg, DELTA's entire universe, is the recovering side today, not the named soft leg.
  • VIX regime: LOW (15.40, −1.33 from 16.73 — the lowest this week, well under DELTA's 30 hard-skip). DELTA's best-performing regime (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20). This is the best-vol backdrop the up-branch has seen in ~3 weeks.
  • Key levels (as triggers, not forecasts): DELTA measures the leader's first-hour return off the 09:30 cash open, not the gap and not pre-market. NVDA first-hour ≥ +1.5% up → NVDA→ASML LONG (primary, edge-carrying cell, clean live 2W/0L); AMD ≥ +1.5% up → AMD→TSM LONG (degraded sub-book, secondary); ≤ −1.5% on either leader = disabled-SHORT branch → no trade (LONG-only). Prior-close refs are stale (NVDA ≈ 225–230, ASML ~1625–1800, TSM ~418–435, AMD ~426–465 — refresh off the cash open; the only firm-carried single-name context is Scanner's NVDA +0.4% pre-market, a sub-threshold mild bid). No fresh reliable single-name quote is obtainable pre-open; per strategy, single-name pre-market reads are context, not signal — the only number that matters is the 09:55 cash measurement.
  • Macro backdrop: A geopolitical/oil easing day layered over a hawkish-oil-Fed narrative a Fed official has begun to temper — the classic two-tier rotation is narrowing as oil eases, with rate-sensitive growth (semis) the recovery leg.

DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM)

Call: Setup possible, not likely — improved but not clean. p_trade 0.20, direction long, conviction low. Today is the first day in nearly three weeks where the tape's shape could host the up-branch; the up-impulse is still the less-likely outcome, and the 10:00 ISM print is a structural reason not to chase one that fires into it.

  • The character case has genuinely improved vs. 08-31 → 09-02. Those sessions were the wrong shape for DELTA's edge: a geopolitical oil shock repriced the whole semiconductor complex simultaneously and in one direction — systematic beta, not the idiosyncratic design→supplier cascade the mechanism monetizes. Today is the mirror: oil easing, growth recovering, a contained flat-to-firm tape. That is no longer a broad down-shock; it is closer to a normal session that can carry a genuine NVDA/AMD first-hour impulse and a genuine ASML/TSM intraday catch-up. The mechanism-character mismatch that justified the 09-02 stand-down is materially weaker this morning.
  • But the base case is still a no-fire. The up-branch has been structurally absent for most of late August — NVDA's best recent attempt was +1.23% on 09-02, inside the 1.5% floor (a genuine near-miss, not a graze of the disabled-SHORT side). On a contained, low-VIX, pre-NFP positioning day the leaders are more likely to sit sub-1.5% and range than to extend +1.5% off the open. The eased-clock relief is a necessary condition for the LONG branch, not a sufficient one.
  • Concrete hazard unique to today: the 10:00 ET ISM Services print lands exactly on DELTA's entry window (buy the laggard at the 10:00 bar open). A hot/upside-surprise ISM reads hawkish-oil-inflation into the growth leg — a direct headwind into a laggard bought at that same bar. If the leader clears +1.5% up into the ISM print, that is the one case to skip: an unknown MEDIUM-impact data point inside the buy window is a structural reason not to chase. (Jobless Claims at 8:30 is off the first-hour window; no earnings reporter inside DELTA's day.)
  • The one clean path to a LONG: NVDA (or AMD) clearing +1.5% up in the first hour on a move that is cleanly extending, not choppy, with the ISM print already digested or soft. That is the supply-chain cascade the mechanism was cleared on. A de-escalation relief pop that simply retraces the last week's oil-shock gap is sector-wide beta, not idiosyncratic cascade — take it only if the leader's first-hour move is clean and continuing; skip a choppy event-driven relief move, and skip it into the 10:00 ISM print. This restates the 08-27 calibration lesson.
  • Which pair (only if the up-branch fires): NVDA→ASML primary — the edge-carrying cell (combined PF 1.85, clean live 2W/0L). AMD→TSM secondary — strongest-leader-wins; caveat that AMD→TSM is the degraded sub-book (n=8 live, WR 25%, PF 0.191, SPRT CONTINUE — not triggered, untouched by me). No new AMD→TSM LONG should be preferred; NVDA→ASML is today's only pair worth a LONG.
  • Sizing if it fires: standard 0.75%, single position, hard flat 15:30. No extra haircut — a genuine mechanism trade clears its gate and carries zero overnight exposure into the geopolitical clock and tomorrow's NFP. The live-geo + 10:00 ISM risk is a trade-quality concern (macro beta / unknown print inside the entry), not a position-sizing one; if the leader's first-hour move isn't clean and extending, the right response is a skip, not a smaller version of the same trade.
  • Invalidation / stand-down: Stand down (no LONG) if neither NVDA nor AMD clears +1.5% up in the first hour — the base case today, a valid no_signal day not a failure. If either leader is ≤ −1.5%, disabled-SHORT stand-down (the eased tape makes a fresh −1.5% leader impulse less likely than in the shock sessions, but the standing two-tier downside can still assert). Full stand-down regardless if VIX ≥ 30 at prior close (not expected, 15.40). Additionally: skip a LONG that fires on a choppy relief move or one that clears the floor into the undigested 10:00 ISM print — do not chase a floor-clear into an unknown mid-morning macro read.
  • Book state carries forward: Cumulative −$442.33 across 10 trades (SPRT CONTINUE, n=10, LLR −0.159). AMD→TSM sub-book n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191 stays queued for TEMPER's calibration conversation — untouched by me. NVDA→ASML clean cell 2W/0L remains the quality cell and today's only pair worth a LONG. Flagging for learnings if the dry-up persists: the up-branch's structural near-absence (~3 weeks) against an easing-vol backdrop is now a live regime-monitoring question worth TEMPER's desk-blind attention — this desk will formalize the flag if 09-04's NFP hard-skip and the days after extend the pattern. Open event-day diagnostic run (skip disabled) remains moderate priority.
