Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the same live US–Iran / Hormuz oil escalation, now firmer, layered under a 3-print macro morning (ADP 8:15, Trade Balance 8:30, Factory Orders 10:00) plus EIA crude at 10:30. CENTCOM struck Iranian rocket/mine-laying capability in the Strait; Iran warns it will block Gulf oil exports after a supertanker was struck. WTI has advanced to a fresh high since late July in the mid-$90s, Brent ~$94.7 — firmer than Tuesday's ~$92. Asian equities hit hard, European futures lower, but the risk-off is contained (pre-market futures ~-23 S&P / ~-166 Nasdaq, sub-ATR-ish, an escalation risk not a crash). Growth/tech is the laggard, energy/defense the bid. Firm-wide GO — no Tier-1 today (NFP Sep 4, 2 days out, named separately). Direction-refusal discipline is carried verbatim from the 09-01 EOD's STUCK grade: on a LOW-VIX, live-geopolitical-clock, pre-data day, do not pre-assign broad-index direction — the headline clock can override any print. Weight oil/rates downside at least equal to any single-name bid.
  • Session character expected: event-driven / ranging, gap-down-leaning, two-tier, with a live two-sided geopolitical risk — energy/defense bid vs. rate-sensitive growth soft; a contained macro-data morning on top of the escalation clock. Expect sub-ATR-to-ATR type range rather than a clean trend; structure may not form cleanly until after the 10:00/10:30 catalysts settle, and a de-escalation headline reverses the oil bid as fast as the strikes started it. (Last session's one wrinkle to keep in mind: realized magnitude came in at 1.4× ATR vs the sub-ATR pre-market framing — the contained pre-market read can understate the realized day.)
  • VIX regime: 16.73 — LOW (<18), creeping up (+0.39) but still the desk's weakest cohort. Elevated geopolitical volume is the read that matters: SPY's vol_ratio finally broke ≥ 1.2 on 09-01 (1.205 — first time in a month) after blocking wide all month, though the exhaustion floor then grazed (0.790 vs 0.80). The vol_ratio wide-block is no longer the automatic base case on energy-driven days.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 761.63 / prior range 759.49–764.67 / SMA20 769.16 (price below) / ATR(14) 5.23. QQQ prior close 707.65 / prior range 704.68–712.24 / SMA20 717.95 (price below) / ATR(14) 8.33. VIX 16.73. Oil: WTI ~$90–95 (fresh post-July high), Brent ~$94.7. Both indices in a multi-session pullback below their 20-day SMAs with a fresh gap-down lean this morning.
  • Macro backdrop: An unresolved oil-supply shock (Hormuz) on an elevated-yield, hawkish-oil-Fed backdrop (Sep rate-hike odds ~60%) into NFP week — cost-push is the core risk, growth/AI the soft leg, and a hawkish-strong ADP/Factory-Orders read compounds the bond selloff into rate-sensitive tech.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

XLE is again the desk's one genuine candidate, and the setup is nearly firing now, not merely possible. The binding gate is no longer the month-long vol_ratio wide-block — SPY crossed 1.2 on 09-01 and today's firmer oil (WTI mid-$90s) + EIA-at-10:30 makes an elevated-volume energy program more likely, not less. Direction stays SHORT on the energy leg (fade a gate-confirmed up-program), but the driver-sector protection applies in its cleanest form.

  • XLE — the real candidate, direction SHORT, and now measurably closer to qualifying than any session this month. Instrument-level geopolitical oil catalyst + EIA Wednesday (intrinsic YES, hard-skip CLEAR, backtested primary edge generator — 68.2% WR / 3.94 PF dev). Oil is firmer than Tuesday (WTI mid-$90s fresh post-July high, Brent ~$94.7 vs ~$92) and energy leads premarket (EOG +2.4%, APA +2.3%), which is what produces an elevated-volume one-way energy program worth fading short at 15:30 — if all four gates pass at 15:20 (VWAP persistence above VWAP, ADX ≥ 20, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80). But the 8/10/8/14 driver-sector lesson is the operative constraint in its clean form: fading a live, strengthening own-driver sector is the loss template, and oil is setting fresh highs — a qualifying XLE short therefore requires the oil bid to have demonstrably exhausted by 15:20 (gates confirm the program completed), not to still be bid. 09-01 was the near-miss on the mechanism (XLE ADX 18.3 < 20 blocked a +0.73% signal; SPY vol_ratio 1.205 then exhaustion_score 0.790 grazed the 0.80 floor) — today energy volume is firmer, so the vol_ratio/ADX legs are closer, but the exhaustion condition (oil done running) is the harder bar on a day oil is setting highs.
  • Energy single-names (XOM/CVX/OXY/SLB) and the defensive bid (LMT/GD/RTX/XAR) — same catalyst, subsumed by XLE; no separate reach, same two-sided reversal risk.
  • SPY — the fade-LONG branch, but no pre-assign. A broad risk-off down-program (growth/tech leading the selloff, both below SMA20, futures lower) is a legitimate gate-confirmed program ECHO would fade long at 15:30 — and yesterday SPY's vol_ratio 1.205 showed the index can now clear the volume gate. But direction-refusal discipline (carried STUCK directive) says do not pre-assign broad-index direction on this two-sided tape, and SPY is the watchlist's weakest-rated candidate. The engine may still fire a long SPY fade on a qualifying down-program; that is a legitimate mechanical fade, not a forecast of direction. I will not pre-assign it beyond the mechanism.
  • DELL / CRDO / MDB — note-only, do not reach. DELL (+7.6% AH, raised FY27 on AI-server strength) is a legitimate single-name post-earnings LONG-catalyst continuation — but single-stock post-earnings reversals complete in the first 90 minutes, not through a full 6-hour program (the standing 7/24 lesson), and DELL gapping up on a soft-AI day is a live-bid single name, not a close-leg fade target. CRDO/MDB beat-but-sold-off are divergence reversion candidates only if selling pressure fades into a VWAP reversion — not clean ECHO programs pre-open.

Call: No trade remains the base case (p_trade 0.32), but this is the third consecutive session where a qualifying energy fade is the live, near-firing branch — and today's firmer oil is the strongest volume read of the month. Direction: short — the primary plausible entry is a gate-confirmed XLE/energy up-program faded short at 15:30 on a demonstrably exhausted oil bid; a long SPY fade on a qualifying down-program is the secondary mechanical branch, deliberately un-pre-assigned. Conviction: low (oil is firmer, not exhausting — the very condition that makes the fade legitimate is the one today's tape argues against, and the two-sided reversal risk is real). Sizing stays standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget — no event sizing, no overnight risk (hard flat 15:58). Invalidation: any XLE/energy fade where the oil bid is still being bid at 15:20 (the 8/10/8/14 loss template) rather than demonstrably exhausted; any qualifying fade without all four gates passing at 15:20; any defense/airline/single-name reach (DELL/CRDO/MDB/energy single-names); any forced SPY fade against the direction-refusal directive (a mechanical long-SPY-fade on a genuine qualifying down-program is fine; a reach is not).

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — again a deliberate stand-down in the catalyst-gap / price-discovery session class (07-09, 07-23, 08-24, 08-31 = 4-for-4 losing, now under an active TEMPER session-character conversation), reinforced today by two catalysts landing directly in the 10:00–12:00 entry window. The 09-01 read stands: the escalation is unresolved, oil is firmer, and the first hour is geopolitical price-discovery, not clean trend establishment.

  • Not a hard-skip. No FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE/QQQ-earnings today — the engine evaluates normally. The stand-down is session-character intent, not a calendar artifact — which is exactly why the engine can still trade through it (as it did 08-31, the -$119.85 SPY stop that escalated this class to an active TEMPER conversation). But 09-01 is the important new data point: on the previous catalyst-gap day the engine agreed with the stand-down — both SPY and QQQ blocked on vwap_side (SPY close 762.20 vs VWAP 761.91, dir short — price on the wrong side of VWAP at 10:00), i.e. the geopolitical gap did not resolve into a clean trend-qualified structure. That is the first catalyst-gap session without a fire, and it weakly supports that the clean three-phase structure is rare on this tape.
  • Today is an even more price-discovery-flavored session than 09-01. The live geo clock is unresolved and oil is firmer; ADP (8:15) and Factory Orders (10:00) land inside/at the edge of the 10:00–12:00 entry window, and EIA (10:30) adds a third catalyst mid-window. The first-hour signal (09:30–10:00) that feeds this window is catalyst/geopolitical noise, and a 10:00 macro print can redirect the session exactly as structure would be forming. There is no with-trend thesis to buy on a two-sided escalation whose broad-index direction the firm rules a coin-flip.
  • VIX 16.73 LOW is SURGE's weakest cohort. The first-hour signal has routinely printed 0.10–0.25pp under the ±0.30% floor on this tape; even absent the escalation no impulse is the base case.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.15). Direction: short — if the engine does fire a mechanical three-phase, it is most likely a down-move resumption on the gap-down-leaning, growth-soft, energy-led tape (both indices below SMA20, futures lower); but this is a mechanical-tape read, not a with-trend conviction, and direction-refusal applies to broad-index direction. Conviction: low. Sizing: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 — not invoked on a stand-down day. The p_trade is honest about the 08-31 lesson: the frontmatter must not underweight the mechanical-entry branch the plan body names — a clean, trend-qualified three-phase that forms after the 10:00 data and the oil bid settle, retracing to VWAP with contracting volume and resuming, is the non-zero branch. It did not form on 09-01 (vwap_side blocked both legs), and two mid-window catalysts make it less likely today. Invalidation / stand-down condition: the catalyst-gap / price-discovery character keeps this in the loss-zone class under the active session-character conversation; only a genuinely clean three-phase forming after the catalysts and oil bid settle would license a direction-neutral mechanical entry, and that is not the forecast. No trade is the well-calibrated base case.
