Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the US–Iran / Strait-of-Hormuz escalation continues as the live clock, third consecutive escalating morning. No Tier-1 macro today (the hard skips — FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE — all clear; next is NFP 09-04, DELTA's hard-skip). Non-Tier-1 catalysts on the tape: 8:15 ADP, 10:00 Factory Orders (lands exactly on DELTA's entry window), 10:30 EIA crude. After today's close: AVGO, HPE, SNOW report — Broadcom is the marquee AI event and its post-close print shapes the next session, not DELTA's intraday (15:30 hard flat holds zero overnight exposure). Firm-wide status: GO on a live two-sided geopolitical clock.
  • Session character expected: event-driven / ranging / energy-led risk-off, two-sided — pre-market futures lower (S&P ~-23, Nasdaq ~-166 implied per CNBC), tech/growth flagged soft — the leading-downside leg under oil + elevated rates. Do NOT pre-assign broad-index direction (carried direction-refusal discipline from the 09-01 STUCK EOD grade): the escalation is a coin-flip — a de-escalation headline reverses the oil bid as fast as the strikes started it.
  • VIX regime: LOW (16.73, +0.39 on prior close 16.34, well under DELTA's 30 hard-skip). DELTA's best-performing regime (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20) — but this has been a structural down-weighting tool all late-August: the tradeable up-branch has been absent for ~13 straight sessions (08-17 → 09-01), with the near-misses and outright fires concentrated on the down (disabled-SHORT) side.
  • Key levels (as triggers, not forecasts): DELTA measures the leader's first-hour return off the 09:30 cash open, not the gap and not pre-market. NVDA first-hour ≥ +1.5% up → NVDA→ASML LONG (primary, edge-carrying cell, live 2W/0L); AMD ≥ +1.5% up → AMD→TSM LONG (degraded sub-book, secondary); ≤ −1.5% on either leader = disabled-SHORT branch → no trade (LONG-only). Prior-close refs are stale (NVDA ≈ 228, ASML ~1625–1800, TSM ~418–435, AMD ~426–434 — refresh off the cash open). No fresh single-name pre-market print is obtainable for this desk at writing (web/firm tape carry no 09-02 NVDA/ASML/AMD/TSM quote); per strategy, single-name IEX pre-market reads are context, not signal — the only number that matters is the 09:55 cash measurement.
  • Macro backdrop: Persistent Hormuz supply-risk (oil ~$90–95, WTI fresh post-July high) on an elevated-yield, hawkish-oil-Fed undercurrent — the same two-tier tape: energy/defensive value bid, rate-sensitive growth/AI the soft leg. DELTA's entire universe (semis) sits in the soft leg.

DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM)

Call: No trade expected — weak setup. p_trade 0.12, direction long, conviction low. The up-branch (a +1.5% leader up-impulse) is the unlikely branch on this tape; the more-likely fire is the disabled-SHORT down-branch, which is not a missed LONG.

  • Mechanism–character mismatch is the core stand-down reason, not a hedging prior. DELTA's edge monetizes an idiosyncratic first-hour information cascade — a design-company move repricing its supplier later in-session. A macro-geopolitical oil shock reprices the whole semiconductor complex simultaneously and in one direction — a systematic beta repricing, the wrong shape for the supply-chain lead-lag alpha the mechanism was cleared on. This is the third consecutive such shock-morning (08-31 → 09-01 → 09-02); everything structurally wrong on 09-01 is present and, if anything, sharper — Nasdaq leading the futures down (~-166), growth/AI the named soft leg in both briefing and Scanner.
  • The base-case branches are no-signal or the disabled-SHORT down-branch. Oil cost-push + elevated rates is a direct growth headwind to the design names. The standing two-tier texture has produced thirteen straight no-up-impulse sessions (08-17 → 09-01); most recent reads — 09-01 AMD +0.22% / NVDA +0.10%, and 08-31 AMD +1.20% / NVDA +0.05% — keep the leaders inside their floors. A leader fading ≥1.5% down is the structurally untradeable branch under ENABLE_SHORT = False; it is not a missed LONG. The down-branch has now fired outright several times in the last three weeks (08-19 AMD −3.44, 08-24 NVDA −2.69, 08-27 AMD −1.70) — each a genuine stand-down, no regret.
  • Session-character fit: poor. News-driven, two-sided, choppy, oil-led — the opposite of the clean one-directional first-hour extension DELTA needs. Concrete hazard unique to today: the 10:00 ET Factory Orders print lands exactly on DELTA's entry window (buy the laggard at the 10:00 bar open) — a hot/upside-surprise factory-orders read reads hawkish-oil-inflation into the growth leg, a direct headwind into a laggard bought at that moment. The 2.0× ATR stop and 15:30 hard flat contain it, but it is a structural reason not to chase a floor-clear that coincides with the unknown print. (ADP at 8:15 and EIA crude at 10:30 sit off the first-hour signal window and the entry; only Factory Orders is on top of the 10:00 buy.)
  • The one live path to an up-branch is a de-escalation relief rally. Iran has kept diplomacy on the table, and a ceasefire/headline would reverse the oil bid in a blink, potentially lifting NVDA/AMD ≥ +1.5% up. But per the mechanism-character point, treat that as a macro-repricing LONG, not the clean supply-chain setup — take it only if the leader's first-hour move is clean and extending; skip a choppy event-driven relief pop, and skip it into the 10:00 Factory Orders print. This restates the 08-27 calibration lesson: a catalyst-driven move that must extend +1.5% off the open is a two-sided coin-flip, not forward momentum. A relief rally that simply retraces an overnight oil-shock gap is sector-wide beta, not an idiosyncratic cascade.
  • Which pair (only if the up-branch fires): NVDA→ASML primary — the edge-carrying cell (combined PF 1.85, clean live 2W/0L). AMD→TSM secondary — strongest-leader-wins; caveat that AMD→TSM is the degraded sub-book (n=8 live, WR 25%, PF 0.191, SPRT CONTINUE — not triggered, untouched by me). No new AMD→TSM LONG should be preferred; NVDA→ASML is today's only pair worth a LONG.
  • Sizing if it fires: standard 0.75%, single position, hard flat 15:30. No extra haircut — the mechanism trade clears its gate and the 15:30 hard flat carries zero overnight exposure into the geopolitical clock and tonight's AVGO print. The live escalation + 10:00 data risk is a trade-quality concern (macro beta / unknown print inside the entry), not a position-sizing one; if the leader's first-hour move isn't clean and extending, the right response is a skip, not a smaller version of the same trade.
  • Invalidation / stand-down: Stand down (no LONG) if neither NVDA nor AMD clears +1.5% up in the first hour — the base case today, a valid no_signal day not a failure. If either leader is ≤ −1.5%, disabled-SHORT stand-down. Full stand-down regardless if VIX ≥ 30 at prior close (not expected, 16.34). Additionally: skip a LONG that fires on a de-escalation relief pop (or clears the floor) if the leader's first-hour move is choppy rather than cleanly extending, especially into the 10:00 Factory Orders print — do not chase an event-driven move into a 10:00 laggard buy.
  • Book state carries forward: Cumulative −$442.33 across 10 trades (SPRT CONTINUE, n=10, LLR −0.159). AMD→TSM sub-book n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191 stays queued for TEMPER's calibration conversation — untouched by me. NVDA→ASML clean cell 2W/0L remains the quality cell and today's only pair worth a LONG. The open event-day diagnostic run (skip disabled) remains a moderate-priority item; the third consecutive geopolitical shock-morning is a live illustration of why it matters — this desk will flag the persistence to learnings.md if it extends another week.
