Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — a live, intensifying US–Iran escalation (two tankers struck Monday night, a third off Oman; Trump vows a "hard" response and threatens Kharg Island; Brent >$90), layered with a 10 AM macro double-header (ISM Manufacturing + JOLTS) where a strong print reads hawkish into the Warsh "not done" Fed. No scheduled Tier-1 today (next NFP Sep 4). Firm-wide GO on a live-catalyst, two-sided tape.
  • Session character expected: Event-driven / choppy, two-sided — energy/defense-led rotation (XLE/CVX/XOM/OXY, LMT/GD/XAR up; airlines and rate-sensitive tech soft) against a mild broad-market risk-off tone. Wide ranges, wide two-tier behavior, possible drift. A de-escalation/ceasefire headline would reverse the oil bid as fast as the strikes started it. For a 5-day swing mechanism this is largely irrelevant — I check IWM once at the open; no intraday view.
  • VIX regime: 15.78 (LOW <18, +0.86 on the overnight geopolitical pop but still under threshold). Broad tape just slipped back below its 20-day SMAs; IWM (small-cap) remains the persistent two-tier laggard and most oil/rate-sensitive leg.
  • Key levels: The only binding level for my mechanism is ±4.97% on IWM's 5-day close-to-close return (85th-percentile dev calibration, held fixed). Structural refs ~$300 ceiling / ~$292 floor. Last logged run thru 08-31: −1.37%.
  • Macro backdrop: Near-record indices into a live oil-supply risk-off — oil-inflation/inflation-shock downside weighted at least equal to any single-name bid; elevated yields (10-yr ~4.7%) with "Fed not done" into the Sep 16 FOMC.

slack — SLACK (Capacity-Ratio Swing Mean Reversion, IWM)

Setup present: no — structurally out of reach. No trade expected.

Flat book (state/position_ledger.json → open_position: null), so no exit due in the 5-day cycle today. The entry that would fire at today's open was determined by the run settling at yesterday's (08-31) close — and the last-logged measurement thru 08-31 was −1.37%, nowhere near the ±4.97% gate. No entry triggers.

Today is therefore a measurement day: the run that could flag an entry for Wednesday's (09-02) open settles at today's close. From a −1.37% baseline, IWM would need roughly +6.3pp (up → contrarian short) or −3.6pp (down → contrarian long) to cross threshold in a single session — a tail-scale, multi-sigma move that does not occur on a LOW-VIX (15.78) tape, geopolitical shock or contained oil bid included. The mild risk-off and oil-inflation tone could press small caps modestly lower — marginally toward the down→contrarian-LONG leg, which is the closer of the two — but a −3.6pp one-day collapse is not reachable on a contained escalation. The run is structurally absent in both directions. (Note: Thanksgiving-adjacent Watch — the coming Sep 7 Labor Day long weekend affects session-count/forward-exit math only in edge cases; no position, so non-binding.)

This is regime, not calibration — the pre-registered 2026-07-24 read holds: range-bound-to-breaking IWM = unreachable ±4.97% threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation. SPRT sits at n=0, LLR +0.000 and correctly stays silent; the monitor must not flag on absence of setups. Prior learnings (08-14/08-20 regime-vs-calibration framing) reinforce the same gate: no threshold graze, no TEMPER conversation warranted.

Sizing / adjustments: None — standard operating procedure. Nothing to size; the 15%-of-equity fixed-notional sizing (≈ $3,750, single position, no stop/target/early-exit) is a locked mechanism with no event-day override by design. The MEDIUM event risk and two-sided oil tape are gate-irrelevant when flat with no signal and no scheduled exit.

What I'm watching (for future windows, not today's action):

  1. The 5-day run magnitude settling at today's close — the only number that matters; whether the −1.37% reading recedes toward either leg (improbable in one session) or a multi-day selloff compounds it toward the down→contrarian-LONG flag.
  2. IWM vs ~$300 — a decisive small-cap catch-up (IWM leading rather than lagging) is the realistic fast path to an up-flag in future windows; conversely a sustained oil-driven risk-off selloff could finally build the down-leg toward a contrarian-LONG flag.
  3. The Hormuz/oil tape and the ISM/JOLTS prints — a sustained oil-inflation shock or hawkish data that pressures small-cap risk appetite is the forward catalyst most likely to finally build an extreme IWM run (down → contrarian long); resolves over subsequent sessions, not today.

Invalidation: None applies — flat, no entry reachable (−3.6pp / +6.3pp away on both legs with only a tail-scale single-day IWM move able to close the gap), no scheduled exit. The two-sided geopolitical tape does not bind an open-and-hold swing entry (no position today; any flag settling at today's close enters Wednesday's open). A no-trade day is the mechanism working as designed, not a failure.

Plan Filed
