Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the same live two-sided US–Iran escalation, now hardened overnight, plus a 10 AM macro double-header layered on top. Two tankers (Saudi-, S-Korean-owned) were struck Monday night and a third hit by three projectiles off Oman; Trump vows a "hard" response and threatens Kharg Island (Iran's key export terminal). Brent back above $90 to ~$92, WTI ~$88. The catalyst is stronger and more directional than Monday's reopening — this is the intensified leg of the escalation, an energy-led risk-off with futures modestly lower. Second risk layer: 10:00 AM ISM Manufacturing + JOLTS, where a strong print reads hawkish into the "Fed not done" (Warsh) backdrop. Firm-wide GO — no Tier-1 today (NFP Sep 4, 3 days out, not the driver). Coin-flip discipline holds: do NOT pre-assign broad-index direction, but the energy/defense sector legs have a real one-way lean on the oil bid.
  • Session character expected: event-driven / choppy, two-tier, gap-down-leaning — an energy/defense-led rotation against a broad risk-off tone; structure may not form cleanly until the 10 AM data settles and the oil bid finds a level. Expect wide ranges and two-tier behavior (oil/defense vs rate-sensitive growth), not a clean broad trend. Two-sided: a de-escalation/ceasefire headline reverses the oil bid as fast as the strikes started it.
  • VIX regime: 15.78 — LOW (<18), up +0.86 on the overnight escalation but still the desk's weakest cohort. Across the whole LOW-VIX stretch ECHO's vol_ratio gate has blocked wide (SPY 0.55–1.19, XLE 0.811–1.143, XBI 0.812) and SURGE's first-hour signal has routinely printed under its ±0.30% floor. Today's elevated geopolitical volume is the best chance in a month for ECHO's vol_ratio to finally break ≥ 1.2.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 766.87 / prior range 764.73–767.98 / SMA20 769.64 (price below) / ATR(14) 5.01. QQQ prior close 716.69 / prior range 713.17–717.58 / SMA20 718.75 (price below) / ATR(14) 8.11. Both closed back under their 20-day SMAs Monday on the contained risk-off; today opens with a fresh gap-down lean on the hardened escalation.
  • Macro backdrop: An oil-inflation shock (Hormuz supply risk, Brent ~$92) on an elevated-yield, hawkish-Fed backdrop into NFP week — the cost-push leg is the day's core risk and argues against blindly trusting any single-name pre-market bid; the 10 AM data can add a hawkish cross-current.

ECHO — dynamic universe, close-leg exhaustion fade (15:30 ET)

XLE is the desk's one genuine candidate, and today the oil bid is harder and more directional than Monday — this is the best chance in a month for a gate-confirmed exhaustible energy program. On VIX 15.78 LOW, the wide vol_ratio block is still a live base case, but elevated geopolitical volume makes a genuine qualifying fade more likely than any session this month.

  • XLE — the real candidate, direction SHORT. The catalyst is instrument-level (geopolitical oil supply risk on a sector ETF — the exact class my eligibility screen accepts; intrinsic catalyst YES, hard-skip CLEAR). Oil is firmer today (Brent ~$92 vs ~$90) and the catalyst harder (tankers struck overnight, Kharg threatened) than Monday's reopening, which is what produced XLE's month-strongest +2.13% signal on a 0.811 vol_ratio that denied the fade. If the oil bid holds and XLE runs one-way on elevated volume, that is a genuinely exhaustible program to fade short at 15:30 — if VWAP persistence + ADX ≥ 20 + vol_ratio ≥ 1.2 + exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80 all pass at 15:20. But the 8/10/8/14 driver-sector lesson applies in its clean form: fading a live strengthening own-driver sector is the loss template. A qualifying XLE fade therefore requires the oil bid to have demonstrably exhausted by 15:20 (gates confirm), not to still be being bid — and the tape is two-sided, so a de-escalation headline mid-session kills the program outright. Base case: vol_ratio blocks wide again (it has all month), but today's volume profile is the real shot at breaking it.
  • Defense / aerospace (LMT, GD, RTX; XAR) — same directional read, note-only. A legitimate strike-catalyst defensive bid, but not an enumerated trigger with a first-half-hour concentration I can rely on to exhaust by 15:20. Do not reach in.
  • XOM / CVX / OXY / SLB — same catalyst, subsumed by XLE. If ECHO evaluates any energy single-name it carries the same two-sided reversal risk as XLE; XLE is the cleaner instrument-level expression. No separate reach.
  • SPY — weak candidate, no pre-assign. Broad-market index with the oil-shock catalyst operating at the macro level, direction explicitly TBD / not pre-assignable under coin-flip discipline. Not a strong fade target on a two-sided geopolitical tape.
  • JETS / AAL / UAL / LUV — downside-leaning, but not a clean close-leg program. The fuel-cost headwind is a soft/fade lean, headline-risk two-sided, and the airline leg is not the concentrated one-way program my mechanism needs to fade CONTRA. Do not reach in.

Call: No trade is the base case (p_trade 0.30), but XLE is the month's most-likely-to-qualify fade. Direction: short — the one plausible fade is XLE (or the energy complex) on a gate-confirmed one-way up-program that exhausts by 15:20; I will not pre-assign broad-index direction, but XLE's directional read is up on the firmer oil bid, so a qualifying fade is short. Conviction: low (the vol_ratio break is plausible today but far from assured; the two-sided reversal risk is real). Sizing stays standard 0.75% per instrument / 2.0% session budget — no event sizing, because I hold no overnight risk (hard flat 15:58) and close-window timing is unchanged. Invalidation: any XLE/energy fade without all four gates passing at 15:20 (a big morning gap alone is not a setup); fading a sector that is still being bid at 15:20 (the 8/10/8/14 loss template); any defense/airline reach; any forced SPY fade against a coin-flip read. On VIX 15.78 the wide vol_ratio block is the well-calibrated base case — but today is the strongest candidate for that block to finally break.

SURGE — SPY/QQQ, VWAP pullback resumption (10:00–12:00 ET)

No trade expected — a deliberate stand-down in the exact catalyst-gap / price-discovery session class SURGE is now 4-for-4 losing in (07-09, 07-23, 08-24, 08-31), on an escalated two-sided tape plus a 10 AM macro cross-current. But the frontmatter reflects the hard lesson of 08-31: the stand-down is prose intent, not engine-enforced, and a mechanically valid three-phase can still fire.

  • Not a hard-skip. No FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE/QQQ-earnings today, so the engine will evaluate normally. That makes the stand-down a deliberate one (session-character), not a calendar artifact — and it is exactly why the engine may again trade through it.
  • The structural block is reinforced, not weakened, by today's tape. The overnight tanker strikes mean the first hour is geopolitical price-discovery, not clean trend establishment — the direct 7/24 learning, now at N=4 in the class (SURGE 0-for-4 on catalyst-gap days; the pre-registered "7th trade → 3rd gap-day loss → TEMPER conversation" trigger already fired and was escalated to an active TEMPER conversation in the 08-31 reflection). Yesterday's short SPY (a mechanically complete three-phase on the same geopolitical-gap class, stopped -$119.85) is the freshest evidence the resumption is a trap on a two-sided tape. Today the catalyst is harder (tankers struck, Kharg threatened) and adds a 10 AM ISM+JOLTS cross-current — an even more price-discovery-flavored session. There is no with-trend thesis to buy on a live two-sided escalation whose direction the firm rules a coin-flip.
  • VIX 15.78 LOW is my weakest cohort. The first-hour signal has routinely printed 0.10–0.25pp under its ±0.30% floor on this tape. Even absent the escalation, no impulse is the base case.

Call: No trade expected (p_trade 0.18). Direction: short — if the engine does fire a mechanical three-phase on the down-leaning, energy-led risk-off tape (both SPY and QQQ below SMA20, futures lower), it is most likely a down-move resumption; but this is a mechanical-tape read, not a with-trend conviction, and the coin-flip discipline applies to broad-index direction. Conviction: low. Sizing: standard $187.50 / single position / hard flat 14:00 — not invoked on a stand-down day. The honest p_trade acknowledges 08-31's self-critique: the frontmatter underweighted the mechanical-entry branch my own plan body names, and the engine traded through the stand-down. A clean three-phase forming in the 10:00–12:00 window after the 10 AM data settles is the non-zero branch that fired yesterday and could again. Invalidation / stand-down condition: the catalyst-gap / price-discovery character puts this in the loss-zone class; only a genuinely clean three-phase that forms after the oil bid and the 10 AM data settle — a trend-qualified first move retracing to VWAP with contracting volume and a resumption bar — would be a direction-neutral mechanical entry, and that is not the forecast. No trade is the well-calibrated base case; the session-character filter conversation with TEMPER continues to carry the class-level lesson.
