Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — the weekend US–Iran / Strait-of-Hormuz escalation (first US military action against Iran in ~a month: strike on rocket launchers reportedly preparing Hormuz mines; Iran launched a response Aug 31). Oil gapped up sharply (Brent +2.2–3% to ~$90, WTI ~$85–86). This is NOT in DELTA's hard-skip set (FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE all clear; next Tier-1 is NFP 09-04, a DELTA hard-skip). Firm-wide status: GO on a live two-sided geopolitical tape.
  • Session character expected: news-driven / choppy, energy-led rotation against a mild broad risk-off tone — a live-catalyst morning, not a panic gap. Oil is the clear leader; equities futures modestly lower; tech/AI flagged soft (oil + elevated rates = a growth headwind, the standing "leg-led-down" risk). Do NOT pre-assign broad-index direction — the coin-flip discipline applies; weigh the downside (oil-inflation shock / risk-off) at least equal to any single-name bid. A de-escalation headline would reverse the oil bid as fast as the strike started it — the tape is genuinely two-sided.
  • VIX regime: LOW (15.23, +0.80 on the weekend pop, still well under DELTA's 30 hard-skip). DELTA's best-performing regime (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20) — but a LOW-VIX sub-ATR tape has structurally starved the tradeable up-branch for ~10 straight sessions (08-17 → 08-28); the disqualifications kept clearing on the down side (disabled-SHORT).
  • Key levels (as triggers, not forecasts): DELTA measures the leader's first-hour return off the 09:30 cash open, not pre-market and not the gap. NVDA first-hour ≥ +1.5% up → NVDA→ASML LONG; AMD ≥ +1.5% up → AMD→TSM LONG; ≤ −1.5% on either leader = disabled-SHORT branch → no trade (LONG-only). Prior-close refs carried from 08-28: NVDA ≈ 228 (227.98), ASML ~1625–1800, TSM ~418–435; AMD prior close from 08-28 read ~426–434 range. Single-name pre-market IEX/feed reads this morning are conflicting and unreliable (one unverified feed claims an ASML +8% "ceasefire" pop that contradicts the authoritative escalation briefing) — treat all pre-market as context, not signal; the gate is the 09:55 cash measurement.
  • Macro backdrop: First US military action vs. Iran in a month re-opened the Hormuz supply-risk that ran all August — a live geopolitical clock layered on the labor-heavy week ahead (NFP Fri), with an elevated-yield (10-yr ~4.7%) restrictive-Fed undercurrent. Oil-inflation shock risk-off is the tape's dominant direction of travel this morning.

DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM)

Call: No trade expected — weak setup. p_trade 0.15, direction long, conviction low. The up-branch (a +1.5% leader up-impulse) is the unlikely branch on a risk-off geopolitical tape where the leadership is energy/defense, not semiconductors.

  • Mechanism–character mismatch is the core reason to stand down, not just the prior. DELTA's edge monetizes an idiosyncratic first-hour information cascade (a design-company move repricing its supplier later in-session). A macro-geopolitical shock reprices the whole semiconductor complex simultaneously in the same direction — that is a systematic beta repricing, the wrong shape for the lead-lag alpha the mechanism was cleared on. Even a relief-rally LONG (de-escalation headline lifting semis across the board) would be a sector-wide beta move, not a supply-chain signal. This is structurally a poor day for the edge regardless of which way the index resolves.
  • The base-case branch is the disabled-SHORT down-branch or no-signal. Oil-shock cost-push + elevated rates is a direct growth headwind to the design names; the briefing and Scanner both flag tech/AI "soft / watch for rotation-fade," and the standing "leg-led-down" pattern (SMH −3% wk-to-date, NVDA −3% Friday) is the tape's current texture. That texture has produced ten straight no-up-impulse sessions — today's risk-off leans amplify it, not break it. A leader fading ≥1.5% down is the structurally untradeable branch under ENABLE_SHORT = False; it is not a missed LONG.
  • Session-character fit: poor. News-driven, two-sided, choppy, energy-led — the opposite of the clean one-directional first-hour extension DELTA needs. DELTA's up-floor has been structurally absent for ~11 sessions; nothing about a geopolitical risk-off morning changes that prior. The runner still measures the 09:55 first-hour return — no pre-judging — but the honest prior is no-impulse.
  • The one live path to an up-branch is a de-escalation relief rally. The escalation is two-sided (Iran signaled diplomacy "isn't impossible"). If a de-escalation headline fires before/at the open and lifts NVDA/AMD ≥ +1.5% up, a LONG could trigger. But per the mechanism-character point, treat that as a macro-repricing LONG, not the clean supply-chain setup — take it only if the leader's first-hour move is clean and extending; skip a choppy event-driven relief pop. This is exactly the 08-27 forecast-calibration lesson restated: a catalyst-driven move that must extend +1.5% off the open is a two-sided coin-flip, not forward momentum — price it accordingly, don't chase.
  • Which pair (only if the up-branch fires): NVDA→ASML primary — the edge-carrying cell (combined PF 1.85, clean live 2W/0L). AMD→TSM secondary — strongest-leader-wins; caveat that AMD→TSM is the degraded sub-book (n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191, kill switch not triggered).
  • Sizing if it fires: standard 0.75%, single position, hard flat 15:30. No extra haircut — the mechanism trade clears its gate and the 15:30 hard flat carries zero overnight exposure into the geopolitical clock. The live escalation headline risk is a trade-quality concern (macro beta, not supply-chain alpha), not a position-sizing one; if the first-hour move isn't clean and extending, the right response is a skip, not a smaller version of the same trade.
  • Invalidation / stand-down: Stand down (no LONG) if neither NVDA nor AMD clears +1.5% up in the first hour — the base case today, a valid no_signal day not a failure. If either leader is ≤ −1.5%, disabled-SHORT stand-down. Full stand-down regardless if VIX ≥ 30 at prior close (not expected, 15.23). Additionally: if a LONG fires on a de-escalation relief pop but the leader's first-hour move is choppy (not cleanly extending), treat it as a macro-repricing entry and skip — do not chase an event-driven relief rally into a 10:00 laggard buy.
  • Book state carries forward: Cumulative −$442.33 across 10 trades (SPRT CONTINUE, n=10, LLR −0.159; last two are AMD→TSM LONG stop-outs 08-13/08-14). AMD→TSM sub-book n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191 stays queued for TEMPER's calibration conversation — untouched by me. NVDA→ASML clean cell 2W/0L remains the quality cell and is today's only pair worth a LONG. The event-day diagnostic run (skip disabled) remains an open moderate-priority item — a geopolitical shock-day like today is a live illustration of why it matters.
