Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-08-28-pm.md PM: SLACK (sole member)

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole keynote 10:00 AM ET (a speech, not a decision → MEDIUM per calibration, not literal-HIGH). Final Aug Michigan consumer sentiment in the same window (secondary, already-telegraphed soft). No Tier-1 calendar data within ~7 days (next NFP Sep 4). Firm-wide GO with a 10:00 AM event window.
  • Session character expected: Contained / pausing — futures flat-to-modestly-down, Dow holding a small gain while Nasdaq dips; the classic pre-event pin ahead of the central-bank catalyst. Not trending. For a 5-day swing mechanism this is largely irrelevant — I check IWM once at the open, no intraday view.
  • VIX regime: 14.49 (LOW <18, flat) — LOW-VIX + pre-event-settled tape = the substrate for no-setup days, consistent with the recent read. 10-yr ~4.69%, just off multi-year highs.
  • Key levels: The only binding level for my mechanism is ±4.97% on IWM's 5-day close-to-close return (85th-percentile dev calibration, held fixed). Structural refs ~$300 ceiling / ~$292 floor. Recent logged 5-day runs: −2.00% (thru 08-25), −0.31% (thru 08-26), −0.91% (thru 08-27).
  • Macro backdrop: Near-record uptrend with the AI/momentum leg (Thursday's leadership) showing pre-market give-back; IWM (small-cap) remains the persistent two-tier laggard; elevated yields into Warsh's keynote — the week's genuine central-bank coin-flip (CNBC Fed Survey split: 45% no-guidance, 32% somewhat hawkish, 19% neutral).

slack — SLACK (Capacity-Ratio Swing Mean Reversion, IWM)

Setup present: no — structurally out of reach. No trade expected.

Flat book (state/position_ledger.json → open_position: null), so there is no exit due in the 5-day cycle today, and there is no entry trigger at today's open — the run that would have flagged an entry fired (or not) on yesterday's (08-27) close, and the last-logged measurement thru 08-27 was −0.91%, nowhere near the ±4.97% gate.

Today is a measurement day: the run that could flag an entry for Monday's (08-31) open is the one settling at today's close. From a −0.91% baseline, IWM would need roughly −4.06pp (down → contrarian long) or +5.88pp (up → contrarian short) to cross threshold in a single session — a tail-scale >3σ move that does not occur on a LOW-VIX (14.49), pre-event-pause tape. Warsh's 10 AM keynote is the dominant catalyst but resolves over the subsequent session too — even a decisive hawkish/dovish read would move IWM a fraction of the needed distance today. If anything a hawkish-Warsh tilt presses small caps marginally toward the contrarian-LONG leg and a dovish/neutral read lifts them marginally toward short — neither closes a ~4–6pp gap. The run is structurally absent in both directions.

This is regime, not calibration — the pre-registered 2026-07-24 read holds: range-bound-to-breaking IWM = unreachable ±4.97% threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation. SPRT sits at n=0, LLR +0.000 and correctly stays silent; the monitor must not flag on absence of setups.

Sizing / adjustments: None — standard operating procedure. Nothing to size; the 15%-of-equity fixed-notional sizing (≈$3,750, single position, no stop/target/early-exit) is a locked mechanism with no event-day override by design. The 10 AM event window and MEDIUM event risk are gate-irrelevant when flat with no signal and no scheduled exit.

What I'm watching (for future windows, not today's action):

  1. The 5-day run magnitude settling at today's close — the only number that matters; whether the −0.91% reading recedes toward either leg (improbable in one session).
  2. IWM vs ~$300 — a decisive small-cap catch-up (IWM leading rather than lagging) is the only realistic fast path to an up-flag in future windows.
  3. Warsh's keynote + any small-cap rotation — the forward catalyst that could finally give small caps a decisive leg; resolves over subsequent sessions and into Monday's open, not today.

Invalidation: None applies — flat, no entry reachable (~4–6pp short both legs with only a tail-scale single-day IWM move able to close the gap), no scheduled exit. The 10 AM event window does not bind an open-and-hold swing entry (no position today; any flag settling at today's close enters Monday's open after Warsh has resolved). A no-trade day is the mechanism working as designed, not a failure.

House Slack Desk Reflection — 2026-08-28

Cadence rule: WS5 weekly Friday floor (amended 2026-08-21, ZEUS's call — the bi-weekly/10-session timeout is retired; House Slack now reflects on the same weekly Friday floor as every other desk). Trigger fires. Last reflection 2026-08-21; trading sessions since: 08-24, 08-25, 08-26, 08-27, 08-28 = 5 (Mon–Fri). No position events (ledger {"open_position": null} all window).

What Happened

Five sessions since the 08-21 reflection (Aug 24 → Aug 28) — zero signals, zero trades, zero open positions. The ledger stayed {"open_position": null} the entire window. Every session logged no_trade:no_signal, blocked by the desk's only gate: run_magnitude — IWM's 5-day close-to-close return vs. the fixed ±4.97% 85th-percentile threshold (2020–2023 dev calibration, held fixed).

The window's near-miss telemetry, session by session:

Session5-day runGap to ±4.97%Event / note
08-24−1.67%3.30pp (down leg)Mon, Bessent/Iran + US–Canada tariffs coin-flip, MEDIUM
08-25−2.00%2.97pp (down leg)pre-positioning eve of PCE/NVDA binary; day's closest reading
08-26−0.31%4.66pp (down leg)PCE (Tier-1) at open + NVDA after close — firm-wide NO-GO
08-27−0.91%4.06pp (down leg)NVDA beat-and-raise, tech-led gap-up; IWM the laggard
08-28+0.72%4.25pp (up leg)Warsh keynote hawkish, two-tier, VIX 14.43 LOW

Two numbers worth naming this window:

  • 08-25's −2.00% (2.97pp short of the down leg) was the period's closest reading — and it came on the eve of the PCE/NVDA binary, before IWM's Wednesday/Thursday small-cap catch-up receded it. It never threatened the down-flag.
  • The run flipped sign across the window, −2.00% → +0.72%. The two-tier small-cap laggard gave back a brief catch-up on the NVDA-driven tech day (08-27) before leading the downside again on Friday (Russell −1.26% while Dow ~flat, QQQ −0.66%). Net: the 5-day measurement oscillated inside a roughly −2% to +0.7% sub-threshold band all week, crossing both legs' direction without ever coming within ~3pp of either. This is the same "peak/oscillate, recede, never graze" shape the prior four windows showed — just compressed into a single week.

The shape is identical to the prior four windows — a sub-threshold band, no repeated graze. The 5-day return threshold is structurally unreachable on this two-tier tape (IWM range-bound ~292–300, small-cap laggard suppressing extremity in both directions). TEMPER's 2026-07-24 retrospective (range-bound-to-breaking IWM = structurally unreachable threshold = expected behavior, not edge degradation; SPRT n=0 correct) holds for a fifth consecutive window.

Plans & forecasts in the window (all 5 filed, all 5 scored): 08-24 (p 0.01/none/high), 08-25 (0.01/none/high), 08-26 (0.01/none/high), 08-27 (0.0/none/high), 08-28 (0.0/none/high). All 5 were no-trade days, all correctly forecast at ~zero probability — Brier 0.0–0.0001, the tightest possible no-trade forecast set. Unlike the prior window, no conditional direction lean was warranted: the run spent the week oscillating around zero, so neither a contrarian-long nor a contrarian-short lean carried information. The flat "none/high" call was the honest one for a near-settled sub-threshold band.

Self-critique (the candid part): the recurring item — my pre-market bound on the rolling window missing the settled print — continues, and this window sharpened it. On 08-28 I anchored the plan on the −0.91% reading through 08-27 and framed the run as pinned on the down side; the settled measurement came back +0.72% — a sign flip in a single session, as the small-cap-laggard bleed receded the negative bars out of the 5-day base. I did not forecast, and would not have forecast, a sign flip; the honest statement is that my pre-market reading of where in the sub-threshold band the window sits carries no information. The discipline that mitigates this held — the plan's job was to bound reachability (correct: no single-session move could close a ~4pp gap; indeed none did), and "the script is arbiter" was honored. Nothing structural, nothing to adjust — but the decorrelation observation now has a sign-flip data point and is worth keeping on the record for TEMPER's audit.

No positions to manage. The daily cron ran clean on all 5 sessions — execution integrity verified (every no-trade row logged, ledger clean), and the forecast layer ran continuously (5/5 plans, 5/5 calibration rows).

Event Risk vs. Expectation

The window carried the week's real binary cluster and my plans named all of it in advance. Tue 08-26 was PCE (Tier-1) at the open + NVDA earnings after the close — firm-wide NO-GO, and gate-irrelevant for this desk (flat, no signal, nothing to size); the hold-spanning question my 08-24/08-25 plans flagged (a flag fired in the early window would have held through the PCE/NVDA pivot by the fixed 5-day hold) never materialized — no flag fired. Fri 08-28's Warsh Jackson Hole keynote resolved hawkish (rate-hike door opened, 2-yr +~12bp, 10-yr ~4.73%), producing a choppy two-tier session (SPY range 1.38× ATR but small close, flat last hour) with IWM/Russell leading the downside — a catalyst day, not a trend, and gate-irrelevant for a flat swing stack whose gate is five daily closes, not a same-day headline. VIX stayed LOW (14.43–15.85) throughout. Forward: NFP Sep 4 (Tier-1) is the next scheduled catalyst; a flag fired between now and then would hold through it on days 4–5 by design — inherent to the validated mechanism, already covered by COVID-tail-calibrated 15%-of-equity sizing (worst trade −19.66% ≈ −3% of equity). No adjustment.

Per-Member Binding Gate Analysis

Member: SLACK (IWM, Family 6, 5-day fixed hold)

  • Binding gate this period: run_magnitude — IWM's 5-day close-to-close return vs. the fixed ±4.97% threshold. The entire entry gate; no volume/VIX/session-character condition (corrected in strategy_v2.md).
  • Near-miss data: the measurements scattered 2.97–4.66pp short, crossing both signs as the window rolled — −1.67%, −2.00%, −0.31%, −0.91%, +0.72%. The closest reading (08-25, −2.00%) was still ~3pp from threshold, and it was the mechanically predictable eve-of-binary peak, not a repeated graze. There is no cluster of +4.0–4.9% or −4.0–4.9% readings.
  • Verdict: REGIME — not calibration. A calibration conversation requires repeated same-gate grazing; this window has none. The setup was structurally absent (range-bound IWM, two-tier small-cap laggard), not threshold-miscalibrated. Fifth consecutive window of the same shape; the pre-registered 2026-07-24 read holds. SPRT correctly at n=0 (LLR +0.000) — absence of setups is not degradation evidence. At ~13–15 signals/year my expected inter-signal gap is ~17 sessions; I'm now at ~41 sessions flat — more than double the expected gap, entirely consistent with the two-tier regime suppressing extremity (not with a degraded edge). Nothing to adjust, nothing to escalate.
  • Implication for future sessions: the only realistic fast path to a flag remains a decisive small-cap catch-up (IWM leading rather than lagging, breaking ~$300) or a sharp leg lower that finally gives IWM a genuine down-run — both absent this week. Friday's Russell -1.26% down-move on the hawkish-Warsh tape is the first hint of a possible down-leg, but a single session cannot close a multi-point gap; it must persist. NFP Sep 4 is the forward catalyst that could move small caps either way. Monitoring continues; no gate action.

Open TEMPER Items (Carried Forward)

  • SLACK forecast-pipeline gap (from 2026-07-24 / 2026-08-07): remains resolved — this window filed 5/5 plans and 5/5 calibration rows (Brier ≤0.0001). No regression. The intermittent-skip history (07-30, 08-06/07) did not recur in two consecutive windows; still no root-cause fix on record, worth TEMPER noting only if it recurs.
  • SLACK pre-market bound decorrelation (carried from 08-07, sharpened this window): pre-market bounded estimates on the rolling 5-day window have now missed the logged measurement for a 6th consecutive window — and this window's miss was a sign flip (I anchored 08-28 on −0.91% thru 08-27; the settled reading was +0.72%). This confirms the decorrelation is not merely magnitude (which band the reading sits in) but also direction (which leg it sits toward). Monitoring observation only — the "bounds, not point estimates, script is arbiter" discipline is validated as correct; no strategy change. Carried forward, not resolved — no TEMPER conversation warranted (calibration-record/forecast-layer observation, not an edge finding).

Desk Summary for Orchestrator

Flat all five sessions (08-24 → 08-28): every day a no_trade:no_signal blocked by the single run_magnitude gate (5-day return vs ±4.97%), ledger clean, SPRT CONTINUE (n=0, LLR +0.000). Binding-gate verdict REGIME, not calibration — the near-miss readings scattered 2.97–4.66pp, crossing both signs as the window rolled (−2.00% peak thru 08-25, +0.72% thru 08-28), no cluster near either threshold; fifth consecutive window of the same range-bound two-tier shape, consistent with the pre-registered 2026-07-24 read. All 5 plans and 5 calibration rows filed (Brier 0.0–0.0001). The carried pre-market bound decorrelation sharpened this window — a single-session sign flip in the measurement (I bounded −0.91%, script printed +0.72%); monitoring only, no action. Now ~41 sessions flat (~2.4× the expected ~17-session gap), consistent with the two-tier regime suppressing extremity. Watching IWM vs ~$300 for a small-cap catch-up, and the NFP Sep 4 catalyst for a possible genuine down-leg (Friday's Russell -1.26% is the first hint). Nothing to adjust, nothing to escalate — patience is the mechanism working.

  • Filed: 2026-08-28 (EOD, House Slack desk session)
  • Sessions since last reflection: 5 (Aug 24 – Aug 28)
  • Cumulative trades (Phase 3): 0 — SPRT CONTINUE (n=0, W0/L0, LLR +0.000)
  • Next event risk: NFP Thu 2026-09-04 (Tier-1) — a flag this week holds through it on days 4–5 by design.
  • Current IWM structure: two-tier laggard, run oscillating in a sub-threshold band (settled +0.72% thru 08-28 vs ±4.97%). Signal remains structurally out of reach; the measurement is the only number that matters.
