Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: HIGH — but the risk lands TOMORROW (8/26), not today. Bucket A flags July PCE tomorrow (8/26, 8:30 ET) and NVDA reports Q2 after the close tomorrow — a macro + single-name binary stacked on one day. None of today's own scheduled macro (housing 9 AM, Consumer Confidence 10 AM, all MEDIUM-low) sits in DELTA's hard-skip set (FOMC decision / CPI / NFP / PCE; VIX 15.85 < 30), so hard-skip CLEAR, firm-wide GO, DELTA CAN trade today — but on a positioning day.
- Session character expected: mixed / news-driven / positioning. A firm, tech-led gap-up at the index level (S&P futures +0.42%, Nasdaq-100 +0.87%) is a pre-event bid, not a directional statement. Beneath the surface the tape is two-tier and mixed — the memory/chip complex (MU −3.35%, AMAT −2.07%, SNDK weak, AMD soft) is still soft even as mega-cap AI names lead. Expect two-sided churn / pre-positioning rather than a clean trend; the briefing explicitly says do not chase index strength into the eve of a binary macro + earnings day. Structure may not form cleanly until the 10 AM Consumer Confidence/Housing data clears.
- VIX regime: LOW (15.85). DELTA's momentum edge performs best in VIX < 20 (dev PF 2.59) — regime-friendly — but the binding constraint today is the +1.5% first-hour up-threshold, not VIX.
- Key levels: DELTA's instruments are not carried in today's briefing/watchlist (price-verification limit). Indicative anchors from the most recent carried levels (runner's 09:30–09:55 measurement is authoritative): NVDA +1.5% ≈ 228.5 (up-LONG trigger) / −1.5% ≈ 221.8 (disabled SHORT); AMD +1.5% ≈ 522.1 (up-LONG trigger) / −1.5% ≈ 506.7 (disabled SHORT). Laggards ASML / TSM per cash open. NVDA closed lower on 8/24 (the −2.69% disabled SHORT) — confirm the actual open before treating these as live triggers.
- Macro backdrop: Positioning day into tomorrow's PCE + NVDA binary and Friday's Jackson Hole/Warsh speech. Overnight: tech-led firm futures (rebound attempt, not repricing), oil sliding to a one-week low (~3% down) on the Iran-sanctions relief, yields easing (~4.70%), gold bid. The chip/NVDA complex is the live risk leg into the print.
DELTA — Lead-Lag Pairs (NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM)
Call: No trade expected — LOW conviction, p_trade 0.15. The up-branch that DELTA needs to fire a LONG is again the least live side of the tape.
- Why: DELTA is LONG-only (SHORT disabled; AMD→TSM SHORT PF 0.98 in dev). A LONG fires only if NVDA or AMD clears +1.5% UP in the first hour (09:30–09:55). Today's pre-market is red on the exact complex DELTA trades — MU −3.35%, AMAT −2.07%, SNDK weak, AMD soft — under a firm index gap led by mega-cap AI names. A ≥ +1.5% first-hour up-impulse in NVDA/AMD against a soft-semis pre-market, on a positioning tape, is improbable. Sub-threshold no_signal remains the base case (it has for seven of the last eight sessions).
- The down-branch is the more-live side, and it is structurally untradeable: NVDA is down 7 straight sessions on "circular financing" AI worries and the chip complex is soft — so a −1.5% first-hour leader move is the more probable DELTA-relevant outcome today. That is the disabled SHORT, logged to the shadow book, not traded, closed for the day by the LONG-only constraint. So the tape's two most likely DELTA-relevant outcomes are either sub-threshold flat or a disabled SHORT — neither is a real trade.
- NVDA earnings-eve handling (the event-day question): DELTA hard-flats at 15:30 today, so a position closes before NVDA's print lands tomorrow — no overnight carry of the binary event. The event-day concern is therefore qualitative, not exposure: on a positioning day, a first-hour NVDA up-move is plausibly pre-positioning noise, not fresh supply-chain information — and the lead-lag continuation premise (the leader move telegraphs a laggard reprice) is weakest exactly when the move is a pre-event bid rather than a fundamental repricing. Even if NVDA clears +1.5%, treat the NVDA→ASML LONG into the eve of the print as a reduced-quality entry this session — momentum-continuation into a positioning tape is the same low-quality context that has been failing the book (see AMD→TSM below). The 15:30 hard flat means the setup is safe on event exposure, but the signal quality argues against stretching for it.
- The degraded cell carries through unchanged: AMD→TSM sub-book sits at n=8, WR 25.0%, PF 0.191, three straight losses (08-13, 08-14, + earlier), queued for TEMPER's calibration conversation — the pre-registered kill switch has not tripped but the cell is the dominant source of cumulative losses. If AMD somehow cleared +1.5% up on a soft tape, the AMD→TSM LONG would be the least desirable entry in the book (degraded cell × weakest continuation context = double-conviction-negative). The clean cell (NVDA→ASML, 2W/0L live) is more defensible but is itself diluted by earnings-eve positioning.
- Session-character fit: VIX < 20 is DELTA's best regime (dev PF 2.59), but the edge requires a clean first-hour leader impulse; a contained, ranging, two-sided positioning day rarely produces one, and today's soft-semis tilt suppresses the up side specifically.
- Sizing vs. event risk: Standard 0.75%, no size cut. Setup probability is already low; cell quality (not events) governs size per the pre-registered rule, and the 15:30 hard flat removes all overnight/print exposure. If a LONG somehow fires, only the clean NVDA→ASML cell is worth considering — and even then at reduced quality given earnings-eve positioning; the degraded AMD→TSM cell firing on a soft tape is a pass.
- Key levels: NVDA +1.5% ≈ 228.5 / AMD +1.5% ≈ 522.1 (up-LONG triggers); NVDA −1.5% ≈ 221.8 / AMD −1.5% ≈ 506.7 (disabled SHORT → shadow book). Confirm actual cash open; runner's 09:30–09:55 measurement is authoritative.
- Invalidation / stand-down: NVDA or AMD clearing −1.5% → disabled SHORT, no trade; soft semis holding through the open with no dip-buying bid → no up-impulse, stand down on the LONG; QQQ negative in the first 30 minutes with the complex following → down-tape, no LONG; a broad risk-off on positioning-day churn ahead of tomorrow's PCE/NVDA binary → up-branch dies.
