Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-08-24-pm.md PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — plan covers active members Null + Meridian only)
Event risk today is MEDIUM, but NOT Tier-1 and NOT inside either member's window. No FOMC/CPI/NFP/PCE (PCE + NVDA are Wed Aug 26, Jackson Hole Aug 27–29 — all outside today). No top-10 QQQ constituent earnings (PDD's BMO print and BIIB's FDA decision are single-name catalysts, none on Null's mega-cap list). Neither member's is_event_day() hard-skip gate fires — both live windows open. The 2:00 PM ET Bessent press conference on the US economic-isolation plan for Iran is a MEDIUM scheduled geopolitical headline clock — it lands after both members' hard closes (Null 11:00, Meridian 11:30), so there is no open-position-into-the-print tail. The event's real effect on this desk is tape character, not position risk: a contained, modestly-soft Nasdaq-led pre-market into a scheduled 2 PM catalyst. Firm-wide GO. The live discriminator is noise-shaped overnight imbalance vs. a geopolitical/tariff/rates repricing — the same family distinction both stacks exclude as fundamental-repricing. Per the 5-for-5-confirmed discipline: do NOT pre-assign direction — the honest read is contained, two-tier, direction unknown into the open; key levels over bias.
Setup present: POSSIBLE, low conviction — the honest read favors a small, fadeable gap-down long on the trend-aligned surface, with a flat no-trade as the fallback. No hard gate fires (MEDIUM but non-Tier-1 event risk — Bessent at 2 PM is after my 11:00 close and not on my calendar skip list; light earnings Monday with no top-10 QQQ constituent; VIX LOW; QQQ above SMA20). Overnight is modestly soft, Nasdaq-led — the week's bond-pressure headwind has tech weakest. The honest range: (a) a flat/too-small open (< ~0.97 pts from 713.41) → no-trade (likely fallback on a contained pre-event Monday); (b) a small gap-down in the ~706.7–712.4 band → LONG — my trend-aligned cohort (QQQ above SMA20), which has now won 3/3 live on this leg (08-06, 08-20, plus trend-aligned reads) and is the headline posture on a soft risk-off pre-event tape; (c) a tiny gap-up (<0.3×, ~714.4–716.3) → short (my tiny-gap-up cohort, won 08-17/08-19), lower-likelihood given the soft bias. Executive read: the mechanism is hot (8/8 live) and the surface is live; a soft Nasdaq-led open is the setup that produces a qualifying gap-down. p_trade 0.50, direction long (trend-aligned gap-down — the live repeated cohort), conviction low.
Honest read — the binding risk is whether a qualifying gap forms at all, and secondarily its character. A modestly-soft, contained pre-market is my best structural backdrop for a small noise-shaped gap-down that reverts to the prior close — and it's not a fear-gap (no hard geopolitical gap; contained, futures only modestly soft). The 2 PM event sits outside my window, so no open-position tail; my only exposure is the first-hour tape, which the event suppresses rather than ignites — that containment is favorable to a clean reversion, but it also raises the probability the open is simply too small to trade. The character discriminator stays: a geopolitical/tariff/rates/energy repricing gap (Iran headline, tariff shock, oil spike, yield break) is the fundamental-repricing population my thesis excludes. Volume is the gauge: >2× prior 5-day avg pre-market/first-minute = institutional commitment to a repricing, stand down.
Sizing vs. event risk: Full 0.5% / 1 MNQ IF a clean in-band gap fires (0.1–0.7× ATR, noise-shaped, volume ≤ 2×, clear 1-min FVG by ~9:55 / hard cap 10:30). MEDIUM-but-post-window event risk needs no size lever — I am flat by 11:00, hours before the Bessent print. A gap below ~706.7 / above ~720.2 (breakaway), a too small < ~0.97 pts flat open, a geopolitical/tariff/rates/energy headline gap, or a volume-spike open is a skip.
Session-character fit: Good-to-moderate — a soft contained pre-event Monday is the surface the gap-fade is built for, provided a qualifying gap forms. The soft Nasdaq-led bias favors the gap-down (long) direction; the containment lowers breakaway risk (favorable) but raises the probability the open is too small to trade (the most likely no-trade outcome). My gap-size + volume gates bind; I take only the noise-shaped in-band gap, resolved at entry, not forecast pre-market.
Key levels: prior close 713.41 = the gap-fill target. Tradeable gap-down band ~712.4 (0.1×) to ~706.7 (0.7×) = LONG (QQQ above SMA20 — the eligible trend direction, valid all the way down the band); tradeable tiny gap-up short band ~714.4 to ~716.3 (<0.3× only, needs the tiny-gap exception). Below ~706.7 / above ~720.2 = breakaway, no trade. Confirm the actual gap at the cash open (IEX pre-market too thin to trust).
Invalidation: Gap outside 0.1–0.7× ATR (breakaway below ~706.7 / above ~720.2, or too small < ~0.97 pts — the likely flat case is a no-trade, not a trade); pre-market/first-minute volume > 2× (institutional commitment to a repricing); a geopolitical/tariff/rates/energy headline gap regardless of size (Iran, tariff, oil, yield); a hard risk-off breakaway lifting VIX > 18; no clean 1-min FVG by 10:30. Hard exit unchanged at 11:00.
Context: SPRT CONTINUE (n=8, W8/L0, 100% WR, LLR +1.695); 2026 WR watch intact through 8; ~52 paper trades to the 60-trade minimum. Last session (08-21) was a correct trend-alignment stand-down (QQQ gapped up 0.379× on an above-SMA20 surface — a with-trend fade, excluded). Today the soft pre-event bias flips the base case toward the eligible gap-down long.
Setup present: UNLIKELY, low conviction — a soft, risk-off-leaning pre-event tape actively suppresses the upside prior-high sweep that is my only trigger. No hard gate fires (MEDIUM non-Tier-1 risk; my gate fires on Tier-1 decision-day macro only; the 2 PM Bessent print is after my 11:30 hard close). Window live. My bearish prior-high sweep needs price to push UP into QQQ prior high 715.65 / SPY prior high 767.84 and reject with RSI(2) ≥ 88, forming a bearish 1-min FVG. Today futures are modestly soft, Nasdaq-led — the tape opens below or at the prior highs and the week's bond-pressure headwind tilts tech down, which is the opposite structural backdrop for a driven up-move into my levels. This is the 06-18 / 08-21 no-surface lesson, now with the bias working against the sweep: reachable in principle is not the same as likely to be reached, and on a soft pre-event day it is structurally improbable. p_trade 0.10, direction short (bearish — my only direction), conviction low.
Sizing vs. event risk: No fire expected. Bearish-only + hard-close-11:30 discipline unchanged; I will not loosen the sweep/RSI/ADX/vol gates to manufacture frequency (standing rule, ECHO v5 lesson). MEDIUM event risk is entirely after my hard close — no open-position-into-the-print concern. A position is only possible if the tape unexpectedly drives hard up into the prior highs within the Kill Zone and exhausts — low-probability on a soft, contained, pre-event backdrop whose directional bias points away from my levels.
Session-character fit: Poor — the soft pre-event tape is the wrong structure for my upside-sweep bearish signal. The contained LOW-VIX character is my best cohort, but it does not manufacture an upside sweep; the sweep needs a driven up-move into 715.65/767.84, and a soft Nasdaq-led morning (the weakest leg on elevated yields) is the antithesis of that. Yesterday both established legs were ADX-blocked in opposite directions (QQQ 13.4 below-band, SPY 35.3 above-band) on the contained tape; the IWM leg had in-band ADX (25.5) and touched its prior high by 0.02 with no confirm — the first live evidence the expansion leg can surface a coherent level where QQQ/SPY cannot. Today a soft pre-event tape gives IWM no more up-drive than the established legs, but IWM remains my highest-surface watch given the weekend's rate/geopolitical pressure is on small-caps too. Legs evaluate independently; ADX re-checked per-leg at open.
Key levels (informational; no-trade expected): QQQ prior high 715.65, SPY prior high 767.84 — the sweep levels (~2–3 pts above a soft open). Vol gate: prior-day ranges QQQ 6.36 (713.41, 709.29–715.65), SPY 3.66 — sub-ATR, should clear the 1.25× gate, confirm per-leg. ADX band 18–32: re-check at session open per-leg (yesterday QQQ 13.4 / SPY 35.3, both off-band on the contained tape).
Invalidation: Vol gate > 1.25× (prior-day ranges sub-ATR — should clear, confirm); ADX outside 18–32 per leg (the live gate risk on a quiet tape: low ADX below the 18 floor); a soft/risk-off tape that never drives up into the levels (invalidating backdrop — the base case); any geopolitical/tariff/rates headline turning the tape sharply or creating a fear-gap character; clean close above prior high = breakout (not this trade — the close-back-below condition is required); sweep without RSI(2) ≥ 88; no bearish FVG within 15 min; hard close 11:30 (all positions closed by 12:30 per strategy).
Reconfirmation ledger (closed 2026-08-20): Meridian's expansion backtest CLOSED — backtest_v8 (QQQ+SPY+IWM) TEMPER-cleared GO; IWM adopted (strategy_v7.md). Firing rate 14.0→19.0/yr (1.36×, short of "double or triple"), edge did not degrade (WR 69.0→70.2%, PF 2.17→2.64). Binding obligation is now the standing ~6-month periodic re-backtest decay check, next due ~2027-02-20 — not a today blocker.
Context: SPRT CONTINUE (n=2, W1/L1, LLR −0.175); spy_leg n=1, WR 100%; iwm_leg sub-book n=0 after Friday's touched-but-unconfirmed sweep (prior_high 300.04 vs day_high 300.06, gap −0.02). A soft pre-event Monday is structurally the same no-surface backdrop — no fire expected, IWM the one leg to watch.
No trades taken.
