Desk Plan — Reversal — 2026-08-19

Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-08-19-pm.md PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — plan covers active members Null + Meridian only)

⚠️ Event-day distinction (read before the per-member calls)

FOMC Minutes (2:00 PM ET today) are the week's policy focal point — but a RELEASE, not a decision day, and it lands at 2:00 PM, AFTER both members' live windows close (Null hard exit 11:00; Meridian hard close 11:30). Firm-wide GO. Neither member's is_event_day() gate fires: Null's tier_filter=2 covers FOMC/NFP/CPI/PCE decision days only (the June-18 TEMPER observation confirmed the event filter sequences ahead of gap measurement on Tier-1 decision days; Minutes are not that class), and Meridian's gate fires on the same Tier-1 decision set. No top-10 QQQ constituent (AAPL/NVDA/MSFT/AMZN/GOOGL/META/TSLA/AVGO/COST/NFLX) reported earnings — TGT/LOW are not on Null's mega-cap exclusion list, so the v2 earnings hard filter does not fire. Both live windows are open. The desk's discipline today: no open position into the 2:00 PM Minutes — which is automatic for both members given their 11:00/11:30 hard closes. The event risk is not a hard-skip; it is a character modifier: expect a possible dry-up into the release (structure in the first hour, then a quieter tape into 2:00).

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — FOMC Minutes (Jul meeting) 2:00 PM ET (the week's policy focal point; three Jul dissents voted hike — Minutes reveal how far hawkish sentiment extended; CME FedWatch ~64% year-end hike chance). Plus pre-market retail earnings TGT (Q2, gapping -7.7% pre-market after ~+50% YTD run) and LOW (Q2, modest EPS beat, subdued reaction) — after HD's beat yesterday. PCE (Aug 26) and Jackson Hole (Aug 21-22) forward. Minutes is a 2:00 PM event — after both members' windows.
  • Session character expected: Event-driven two-tier, news-driven — NOT clean trending. Morning shaped by the retail-consumer test (TGT/LOW) and the lingering AI/memory-valuation unwind; then a 2:00 PM Minutes event window with a possible dry-up into the release. Overnight: the AI/semiconductor selloff deepened/spread across Asia (Nikkei lowest since Aug 4; Kioxia -13%, SoftBank -10%, SK Hynix heavy) — but US index futures are roughly FLAT to slightly lower (S&P +0.01%, NQ -0.10%, Dow +0.00%): the AI-valuation pressure hit Asia far harder than the US cash open. The US tape is not a clean gap-down.
  • VIX regime: 15.81 (LOW, <18) — both members' strongest historical cohort (Null backtest LOW-cohort WR ~80%; Meridian's lone live win logged LOW). A breakaway-VIX day this is not. The AI/tech leg is the live directional risk, but on a LOW-VIX, roughly-flat-open tape.
  • Key levels (authoritative = pm briefing, Alpaca/IEX):
  • QQQ: prior close 717.76, prior high 722.12, prior low 715.97, SMA20 706.21 — above, ATR(14) 11.93. Pre-market thin — confirm the gap at the cash open. Null's tradeable band around prior close (0.1–0.7× ATR) ≈ ±1.19 to ±8.35 pts → ~716.6 to ~709.4 (down) / ~718.9 to ~726.1 (up); tiny gap < 0.3× ATR (< ~3.58 pts) is the strongest, trend-agnostic cohort. Meridian's prior-high sweep level 722.12 sits ~4.4 pts above a flat open.
  • SPY: prior close 767.37, prior high 769.50, prior low 766.95, SMA20 758.64 — above, ATR(14) 7.21. Meridian prior-high sweep level 769.50.
  • Macro backdrop: Uptrend intact but paused a few tenths below the record after a three-session pull (both indexes above SMA20); the AI/memory complex — which drove the recent tech run — is bleeding (valuation unwind), while the broad/value tape holds near flat. Elevated 30-yr yields (~2007 highs), firming oil on Mideast tensions, and the AI-valuation wobble are the competing live risk legs; a hawkish Minutes read would press long-duration tech further. For a reversion desk the tape is genuinely two-tier; today's likely small/flat gap on QQQ is more noise-shaped than a breakaway, but the AI-valuation driver means the character of any gap is the thing to weigh.

Null — MNQ/MES (gap fade / FVG)

Setup present: POSSIBLE, low conviction — the flat-to-slightly-lower US open is actually Null-favorable (a small, likely in-band gap is this stack's core population), with the one binding question being the character (noise-shaped vs. AI-valuation-repricing) of that gap. No hard gate fires (Minutes is a 2:00 PM release, not a Tier-1 decision day and after the window; TGT/LOW are not top-10 QQQ constituents; VIX LOW). QQQ above SMA20 makes gap-down (long) the eligible trend direction. The overnight AI selloff hit Asia, not the US cash open — so a US small gap-down (or tiny gap either direction) is genuinely possible. A qualifying gap needs to land in the 0.1–0.7× ATR band (~±1.19 to ±8.35 pts from 717.76), open with pre-market/first-minute volume ≤ 2× prior 5-day avg (noise-shaped, not institutional commitment to the AI-valuation move), and produce a clean open-drive reversal + 1-min FVG by ~9:55 / hard cap 10:30. p_trade 0.35, direction long (eligible gap-down reversion), conviction low.

Honest read — the binding risk is the character of the gap, not its existence, and today that cuts slightly better than yesterday. Yesterday's QQQ gap was 0.824× ATR (9.6 pts, -down) — outside the 0.7 band → no-trade (blocked=gap_filter). Today US futures are roughly flat, so the cash gap should be smaller and far more likely to land in-band — a genuine improvement in setup likelihood over 08-18. The thing to weigh: the driver is the AI/memory-valuation unwind, which is the fundamental-repricing population my thesis excludes (same family as the 06-17 FOMC and 07-24 INTC observations). But because that pressure is showing up in Asia far more than in US futures, the US gap is more likely to be noise-shaped (a small overnight imbalance, not a US cash breakaway). If it's a small gap (especially < 0.3× ATR, ~3.58 pts — my strongest, trend-agnostic, 78% fill cohort) with normal volume, I fade it. If it's a deeper valuation repricing (>0.7×), high-volume breakaway, or a hawkish-Minutes-anticipation move, I stand down. The 2:00 PM Minutes is after my 11:00 hard exit — no open-position risk, but a hawkish tailwind into the afternoon is not my trade.

Sizing vs. event risk: Full 0.5% / 1 MNQ IF a clean in-band gap fires (0.1–0.7× ATR, noise-shaped, volume ≤ 2×, clear 1-min FVG by ~9:55/10:30). A gap below ~709.4 (down-breakaway) or above ~726.1 (up-breakaway), or a volume-spike/Hormuz/AI-headline/Hawkish-Minutes-anticipation gap is a skip. No size lever on the fundamental-repricing case. FOMC Minutes at 2 PM caps conviction — a one-way reversion into the week's policy focal point is not a high-commitment day even though the event is after my exit.

Session-character fit: Moderate-to-good — an improvement over 08-18. A small in-band gap on a LOW-VIX tape (best cohort) is the surface gap-fade is built for, and the US open is closer to flat than yesterday's out-of-band gap. The two-tier shape (tech weak vs. broad/value flat) is the one thing to weigh: a small tech-led gap-down is tradeable, but a two-tier rotation could bleed tech all day without a clean fill to prior close if the AI-valuation story deepens — and the Minutes looms as the afternoon catalyst. The retrace-floor near-miss from 08-13 (0.30 vs 0.50 floor) remains my open calibration question; today's small-gap surface is the kind that binds on it.

Key levels: prior close 717.76 = the gap-fill target for any long. Tradeable gap-down band ~716.6 (0.1×) to ~709.4 (0.7× ATR) below prior close; below ~709.4 = breakaway, no trade. Tiny-gap < 0.3× (~714.2 and above) is my strongest cohort and is trend-agnostic (both directions live). Confirm the actual gap at the cash open (IEX pre-market too thin to trust).

Invalidation: Gap outside 0.1–0.7× ATR (breakaway below ~709.4 / above ~726.1, or too small < 1.19 pts); pre-market/first-minute volume > 2× (institutional commitment to the AI-valuation move = fundamental repricing); a Hormuz/oil, AI-valuation, or hawkish-Minutes-anticipation headline gap regardless of size; TGT/LOW or a retail read turning the tape into a data-driven breakaway or lifting VIX > 18; no clean 1-min FVG by 10:30. Hard exit unchanged at 11:00 (automatically flat before the 2:00 Minutes).

Context: SPRT CONTINUE (n=6, W6/L0, 100% WR, LLR +1.27); 2026 WR watch intact through 6; ~54 paper trades to the 60-trade minimum. Yesterday no-traded (gap_ratio 0.824, out-of-band); the 08-17 tiny-gap-up short (0.158, +$75.30) proved the tiny-gap exception is live. Today's flat-to-slightly-lower open puts a small gap in play.

Meridian — QQQ/SPY (kill-zone sweep + RSI(2), bearish only)

Setup present: UNLIKELY — a flat-to-down, AI-valuation-tilted US open is structurally the WRONG backdrop for a bearish prior-HIGH sweep, and ADX is likely off-band. No hard gate fires (Minutes is a 2:00 PM release, not a Tier-1 decision day and after the 11:30 hard close); window live. My bearish prior-high sweep needs price to push UP into QQQ prior high 722.12 / SPY prior high 769.50 and reject with RSI(2) ≥ 88, forming a bearish 1-min FVG. Today the overnight tone is an AI-valuation selloff (though US futures are only ~flat), i.e. the tape is at best flat, at worst tilting down — pointing away from my upside sweep levels, which sit ~4–7 pts above a flat open. This is the 06-18 learning in its cleanest form: "reachable in principle is not the same as likely to be reached" — an upside sweep needs price to push up into the level, and a flat/down-drifting AI-valuation tape is the wrong structural backdrop regardless of how close the level sits. p_trade 0.10, direction short (bearish — my only direction), conviction low.

Sizing vs. event risk: No fire expected. Bearish-only + hard-close-11:30 discipline unchanged; I will not loosen the sweep/RSI/ADX gates to manufacture frequency (standing rule, ECHO v5 lesson). A position is only possible if the tape reverses up hard into the prior highs and exhausts within the NY Kill Zone — low-probability on this backdrop. Minutes at 2:00 PM is after my hard close, so no open-position-into-event risk — but a hawkish Minutes tailwind points further down, away from my upside levels, not toward them.

Session-character fit: Poor. A flat/down-tilted AI-valuation tape is the antithesis of the backdrop that produces an upside stop-hunt above the prior high. The ADX read is the dominant live gate: yesterday QQQ 36.6 / SPY 56.6 — far outside the 18–32 band (blocked), and the persistent elevated ADX off the tech-driven pull is exactly the structural block that has kept this stack near-frozen. Today, even if ADX normalizes toward the band, the flat-to-down tape still points away from the upside sweep levels. Either way the sweep is blocked: elevated-ADX outside the band, or a tape that never pushes up into the levels. The near-miss pattern (sweeps-but-RSI-capped, levels missed, ADX off-band) is the firing-rate cost that keeps recurring — and today the backdrop makes even the surface unlikely to form.

Key levels (informational; no-trade expected): QQQ prior high 722.12, SPY prior high 769.50 — the sweep levels, now ~4–7 pts above a flat open and pointed away from by the tape. A close above the prior high on a two-tier day would be a breakout, not this trade.

Invalidation: Vol gate > 1.25× (prior-day ranges QQQ ~6.15, SPY ~2.55 — sub-ATR, should clear); ADX outside 18–32 (the live risk: yesterday QQQ 36.6 / SPY 56.6, elevated well outside the band; a hawkish-anticipation tape keeps ADX elevated in the wrong direction); a flat/down-drifting/tech-bleeding tape turning away from the upside levels (invalidating backdrop, not enabling); clean close above prior high = breakout; sweep without RSI(2) ≥ 88; no bearish FVG within 15 min; TGT/LOW or an AI-valuation/hawkish-Minutes-anticipation headline turning the tape sharply down (wrong backdrop); Hormuz headline mid-sweep; hard close 11:30.

⚠️ Reconfirmation ledger — outranks any single session: Meridian's expansion backtest was due 2026-08-09 — binding — and is now ten sessions past-due with no completion evidence in the stack. The binding rule (desk CLAUDE.md, WS2c, TEMPER: "binding, not advisory") makes Meridian a park candidate — a decision that escalates to ZEUS, not a unilateral desk-PM call. I do not park Meridian (ZEUS's call) and it stays an active member; the obligation remains escalated. Today's structurally-absent sweep is not the firing-rate evidence that backtest must quantify (that evidence is the sweeps-but-no-RSI / level-miss / ADX-off-band pattern from 08-10/08-17/08-18); this is a no-surface backdrop.

Context: SPRT CONTINUE (n=2, W1/L1, LLR −0.156); spy_leg n=1, WR 100%, no trigger. Yesterday QQQ/SPY both blocked on ADX precheck (36.6 / 56.6 — outside band). Today's flat/down-tilted tape points away from the sweep levels and ADX is likely elevated — no fire expected.

Reversal Desk Reflection — 2026-08-19

PM: Wicker (persona; own stack retired 2026-07-14 — desk covers active members Null + Meridian only) Briefing reference: dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-08-19-eod.md Cadence: same-day-on-trade (Null traded → desk reflection run)

What Happened — Desk Summary

The desk had a clean, mixed day: Null traded and won; Meridian correctly stood down on a no-surface day. Net desk paper P&L +$98.30.

  • Null — TRADED, +$98.30. SHORT QQQ, entry 720.23 09:35, stop 723.4052, target 717.76 (prior close), exit 09:39 on target. A tiny gap-UP (gap_ratio 0.220, <0.3× ATR — his strongest, trend-agnostic cohort) on a LOW-VIX (14.9) tape, above SMA20; filled straight back to prior close. His seventh live v2-track trade, extending the streak to 7/7 (100% WR), SPRT n=7 W7/L0 LLR +1.483, 2026 WR watch intact through 7 of the first 30 Phase 3 trades.
  • Meridian — NO-TRADE, $0.00. Structurally-absent surface, exactly as forecast (p_trade 0.10). QQQ no_sweep: prior_high 722.13 vs day_high 721.39, missed by just 0.74 — and notably ADX was in-band (29.5) on QQQ today, so the binding gate was the backdrop (tape drifting away from the upside level), not ADX. SPY adx_precheck blocked at 40.1 (outside 18–32). SPRT n=2 CONTINUE, LLR −0.156.

Session Character Read

Two-tier, contained, and mildly UP — the AM's two-tier geometry was correct, the direction lean was the wrong side of a coin-flip. SPY +0.22% (snapping a 3-day losing streak) vs QQQ -0.24%, both sub-ATR; VIX LOW (14.89); both indices above SMA20. The day's actual fuel was an unanticipatable positive policy catalyst — the Treasury buyback announcement (10-yr -5bp to 4.65%, 30-yr ~9bp) plus the Canadian tariff pause — layered over the Moderna +151% marquee vaccine headline. The FOMC Minutes released hawkish-split but were looked-through (no tech selloff), so the day's named risk did not bite. Both our members' windows closed (Null 11:00 / Meridian 11:30) well before the 2:00 Minutes, so neither carried open-event risk — the event was a non-factor for the desk.

For a reversion desk the takeaway is that this was a genuinely quiet, contained, LOW-VIX session where the only setup that formed was Null's small-gap fill — which is precisely the population the gap-fade is built for. Meridian's upside-sweep mechanism is structurally a poor fit for a flat/down-tilted tech tape, and today confirmed that cleanly.

Desk-Level Learnings Flags

  • Null — direction-lean vs. executed-trade divergence (restate as calibration evidence). The desk plan forecast Null long (gap-down eligible); he executed short on the tiny gap-up. This is the second clean instance of the pattern TEMPER already logged (2026-07-24): gap direction for a gap-reversion strategy is resolved at entry time, not forecast pre-market. The plan's body had the tiny-gap trend-agnostic cohort both-directions-live, so it was a forecast-vs-execution framing gap, not a strategy failure. Flag for plan scoring: weight p_trade over direction for Null; direction accuracy is a noisy metric for his setup.
  • Null — tiny-gap-up short is now a live, repeated cohort. The <0.3× ATR trend-agnostic short has now won twice (08-17, 08-19). It should be headline posture on a flat-open session, not a caveat.
  • Meridian — backdrop and ADX are independent blockers. Today QQQ ADX was in-band (29.5) yet the level was still missed (0.74). This confirms the level-miss/backdrop blocker is genuinely independent of the ADX band. This is the firing-rate evidence the expansion backtest (due 2026-08-09, binding, still no completion evidence, escalated to ZEUS) must quantify — the desk's standing open obligation. Meridian stays active; no gate loosening to manufacture frequency.
  • No desk-level no-unilateral-tweak. Both members' gates behaved as designed; nothing today warrants a parameter change.

Reconfirmation Ledger

  • Meridian expansion backtest — due 2026-08-09, binding, still no completion evidence. Now ~10 sessions past-due. Park question remains escalated to ZEUS; Meridian stays active, desk does not park and does not loosen gates. Today's no-surface backdrop is not the firing-rate evidence that backtest must quantify (that is the sweeps-but-no-RSI / level-miss / ADX-off-band pattern); this was a clean structural absence.
