Shared Market Read
- Event risk today: MEDIUM (briefing). FOMC Minutes — July 28-29 meeting — TODAY, 2:00 PM ET — not a decision day, not in DELTA's hard-skip set (FOMC decision/CPI/NFP/PCE only; VIX ≥ 30), so hard-skip check CLEAR, firm-wide GO — this desk CAN trade. The Minutes reveal how far hawkish sentiment extended beyond the three dissents (Hammack, Kashkari, Logan voted hike); a hawkish read presses long-duration tech/memory further. This is the day's structural difference from 08-18: the Minutes lands at 2:00 PM, inside DELTA's holding window (10:00 entry → 15:30 hard flat) — so any LONG taken this morning would be carried through the event window into a HIGH-impact scheduled print on an already-fragile AI tape. That is live position risk, not the pre-absorbed events of yesterday.
- Session character expected: Event-driven / two-tier, second day. The global AI / memory / semiconductor selloff that opened Tuesday deepened and spread across Asia overnight — Kioxia -13%, SoftBank -10%, SK Hynix and Samsung heavy (Nikkei lowest since Aug 4) — the exact complex DELTA trades. US index futures roughly flat to slightly lower (S&P +0.01%, NQ -0.10%, Dow flat) — not a clean US gap-down; the AI/tech weakness is the live directional risk, the broad/value tape holds near flat. Expect a two-part session: a morning shaped by the retail-earnings consumer test (TGT gap -7.7%, LOW modest beat) plus the lingering AI/tech downside, then a 2:00 PM event window with a likely dry-up into the Minutes. Two-tier / news-driven, not clean trending.
- VIX regime: 15.81 — LOW (<18), DELTA's best backtest regime (dev PF 2.59 in VIX < 20 vs. 1.30 in 20-30); the ≥ 30 hard-skip barrier is far away. Supportive, licenses trading — but regime does not make the direction, and today's direction bias is down.
- Key levels (DELTA, prior 08-14 closes as the last verified anchor): NVDA 225.16 → +1.5% ≈ 228.5 = clean NVDA→ASML LONG trigger (2W/0L live, the cell that makes money); −1.5% ≈ 221.8 = disabled SHORT. AMD 514.39 → +1.5% ≈ 522.1 = AMD→TSM LONG trigger (the degraded cell, sub-book n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191, three straight losses); −1.5% ≈ 506.7 = disabled SHORT. Laggards ASML ~1,844 (indicative), TSM 426.35. Runner measures actual first-hour returns — authoritative; the cash open confirms where NVDA/AMD actually gap relative to these anchors.
- Macro backdrop: A second day of the AI-valuation unwind (rates + oil + memory down) against a roughly flat broad index; TGT gaps -7.7% (new CEO, weak consumer read) while LOW prints a modest beat; the retail cluster continues (WMT Thu) and FOMC Minutes at 2PM plus oil/Mideast and the 2007-high 30-yr keep the tail live — a hawkish Minutes read on this fragile tape is the day's main escalation risk.
PRICE-VERIFICATION LIMIT (stated per dispatch): the pm briefing (Alpaca/IEX-verified) carries none of DELTA's four instruments and no consolidated pre-market prints for them. I carry forward the last verified closes (08-14: NVDA 225.16, AMD 514.39, TSM 426.35; ASML ~1,844 indicative) as indicative anchors only — today's cash open and the runner's 09:30–09:55 measurement are the only authoritative signal inputs.
DELTA — NVDA→ASML, AMD→TSM (LONG-only, Phase 3)
Forecast: p_trade 0.12 | direction long | conviction low
Verdict: the direction bias is against my LONG — and today it is structurally reinforced, not just tilted. Yesterday the AI-valuation wobble was the driver; overnight that same complex deepened into a second, harder rout (Kioxia -13%, SoftBank -10%, SK Hynix/Samsung heavy) — the names whose first-hour +1.5% up-move I'd need to fire a LONG are exactly the ones bleeding into the US open. This inverts and widens the setup I want. On top of that, the 2:00 PM FOMC Minutes sits inside my holding window — so even the low-probability LONG branch carries a real hawkish-Minutes stop-out risk that yesterday's session didn't. My base case is a disabled-SHORT shadow-book no-trade or a no_signal — not a trade.
- Base case (down-semis, shadow): the overnight AI/memory rout carries NVDA and/or AMD to −1.5% in the first hour → disabled SHORT (structural no-trade under the LONG-only book), logged to the shadow book (AMD_TSM shadow n=8→n=9, or NVDA_ASML's second live disabled-SHORT datapoint after 07-16). This is the most likely real-session path: two consecutive down-semis days, the deeper one today, pushes the leaders' first-hour returns negative, and LONG-only turns that into information, not exposure.
- Second branch (no_signal): the down-gap is absorbed but leaders' first-hour |return| stays under ±1.5% (sub-threshold, fading-bid tape) → no trade (the 07-17/07-20/07-23 pattern). Plausible — US futures are roughly flat, not a clean gap-down, so the impulse may simply not clear the bar. Yesterday's own no_signal (AMD -1.28%, NVDA -0.05%) shows how close to the threshold this tape runs without firing.
- Third branch (a LONG actually fires — the low-probability contrarian reversal): for a LONG I need NVDA or AMD to clear +1.5% up in the first hour — i.e. a leader to reverse its second-day rout and push up on an AI-valuation-down tape. That is a genuine dip-buy scenario, but it is not the base case and is less likely than it was yesterday given the deepened overnight unwind. If it fires, the operative cell question (NVDA→clean vs. AMD→degraded) is the same one I've been carrying — and today it carries an additional 2:00 PM Minutes stop-out risk on top.
Calibration math (day-conditional): P(signal) ≈ 0.45 — semis are the day's dominant theme and a two-session rout brings real first-hour volatility, so an impulse is genuinely likely. But P(LONG | signal) ≈ 0.28 — the first-hour direction bias is down (disabled), and the deepened overnight unwind makes an up-reversal less likely than yesterday's ~0.35. Net tradable-signal probability ≈ 0.13. Direction long by construction (LONG-only book — the only direction that counts as a real trade). Conviction low: the most probable outcome is a shadow-book no-trade, and the LONG branch — if it fires at all — most likely hands me the chronically-degraded AMD→TSM cell plus an open position into the 2PM Minutes. This is a genuinely low-stakes-stake day, the lowest-stakes of the week's active-trade candidates.
Sizing vs. event risk: standard 0.75%, single position — no change. No same-day Tier-1 hard skip (Minutes are not a decision). The Minutes exposure is a conviction and entry-selection caution, not a size cut — the per-trade risk (0.75% with a 2.0×ATR stop) is the standing risk control, and hard flat at 15:30 removes all overnight. What today changes vs. yesterday is entry selectivity: if a LONG fires, a hawkish Minutes at 2PM is a real stop-out tail on a fragile AI tape — so the clean NVDA→ASML cell (2W/0L) is the only LONG I'd want at all, and the degraded AMD→TSM cell firing into the Minutes would be a double-conviction-negative (lossy cell + event-window stop risk). Cell quality stays the binding risk, handled by scrutiny and the standing TEMPER gate conversation, not a size cut.
Key levels: NVDA +1.5% ≈ 228.5 → clean NVDA→ASML LONG (2W/0L live, the cell that makes money — the only LONG worth taking into the Minutes); NVDA −1.5% ≈ 221.8 → disabled SHORT (shadow). AMD +1.5% ≈ 522.1 → degraded AMD→TSM LONG (n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191, three straight losses — the chronic loser; least desirable entry today, doubly so with the Minutes window open); AMD −1.5% ≈ 506.7 → disabled SHORT (shadow). Laggard cash-open gaps are the second read: ASML (~1,844) / TSM (426.35) gapping with their leader closes the lead-lag spread (late entry); a laggard not gapping is the only genuine lead-lag shape left. But the first read is direction: today the leaders' first-hour move is most likely negative, which maps to a shadow-book no-trade, not a LONG.
Invalidation (stand down entirely):
- AMD and/or NVDA clears −1.5% in the first hour — disabled SHORT, not a trade; the desk is closed for the day by the LONG-only constraint (the down path is structurally untradeable).
- SPY or QQQ cash-open gap > 1.5% in either direction — impulse absorbed before measurement; a fresh mid-session >1.5% move against the LONG direction also stands me down.
- A hawkish FOMC Minutes (2PM) read extending beyond the three dissents while a LONG is open — the AI/memory leg presses down, the stop-out tail becomes the base outcome; close exposure attention goes to red on that print.
- A further overnight-oil escalation or 30-yr yield spike that breaks the whole AI complex — the down-gap deepens, no LONG, the reversal branch dies.
- The memory complex sells through the open and keeps bleeding (day-two rout accelerating, not fading) — confirms no up-impulse; stand down.
- QQQ turns sharply negative in the first 30 minutes while the complex follows — down-tape confirmed, no LONG.
Information cost (documented, not acted on): a down-semis day remains this desk's structural blind spot — on the most likely real-session path today (AMD/NVDA cascading −1.5% on the second day of the rout), the disabled SHORT is logged to the shadow book (AMD_TSM n=8→n=9; NVDA_ASML n=1→n=2 if NVDA fires it) but LONG-only keeps costing information in exactly the down-tape this sector is in. TEMPER's ruling is explicit and I do not recommend re-enablement — the 2026-07-15 rejection stands (NVDA→ASML short holdout 1.60 carried entirely by 2022; 2023-24 that cell is loss-making), and the "30 LONG paper trades at PF ≥ 1.5" gate is the governing path; today's near-miss is information cost under the constraint, not evidence of a gate failure. The load-bearing continuity thread is the AMD→TSM sub-book — n=8, WR 25%, PF 0.191, three straight losses, tracking at its pre-registered kill switch; SPRT still reads CONTINUE (n=10, LLR -0.159) but trails the sub-book problem. Today's down-bias protects that book (no AMD up-impulse → no fresh degraded LONG), but if the low-probability up-reversal DOES fire on AMD — and loses a fourth straight into the Minutes window — the standing TEMPER gate conversation's evidence strengthens materially. NVDA→ASML remains 2W/0L and is the only cell whose LONG I'd want at all today.
Plan Filed
- Filed: 2026-08-19 07:50 ET (pre-open, morning dispatch)
- Frontmatter forecasts complete for every active member: yes
- Hard skip check: CLEAR (FOMC Minutes is NOT a decision and NOT in DELTA's skip set; VIX 15.81 < 30) — firm-wide GO, desk CAN trade. The 2:00 PM Minutes is a live-position event-window risk for any LONG held from 10:00, and a conviction/selectivity caution — not a skip.
- Price-verification limit stated: briefing carries no DELTA-instrument prices; prior 08-14 closes carried forward as indicative anchors (NVDA 225.16, AMD 514.39, TSM 426.35; ASML ~1,844) — the cash open and runner measurement are authoritative
- Dominant input: the AI-valuation unwind deepened overnight across Asia into a second day — my complex gaps into weakness, so my base case is a disabled-SHORT shadow-book no-trade (p_trade 0.12), and even the low-probability LONG branch now carries 2:00 PM FOMC Minutes stop-out risk. The degraded AMD→TSM cell firing into the Minutes is the entry I most want to avoid.
