Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — no same-day Tier-1. Empire State Manufacturing at 8:30 AM ET (cons ~10.6–12 / prior 15.6, MEDIUM) and NAHB Housing Market Index at 10:00 AM ET (cons 33 / prior 34, LOW-MEDIUM) are both second-tier and tradeable — neither is on a pre-registered skip set, firm-wide GO. The week's Tier-1s are the FOMC Minutes (Wed Aug 19, 2 PM) and Jackson Hole (Aug 21–22) — outside the 2-day window but the backdrop; the retail-earnings consumer test (HD Tue, TGT/LOW Wed, WMT Thu) frames the week.
  • Session character expected: Mixed / ranging-to-mildly-positive, sub-ATR. A modestly-higher, tech/memory-led futures open (+0.06%) against a consumer-weakness (Friday Retail Sales −0.6%, Michigan 51.0) and an oil/Hormuz headline clock (US-Iran interim ceasefire expires today, Brent ~$88). LOW VIX + near-record base + thin summer conditions argue for a quiet, two-sided tape; the briefing is explicit that structure may not develop until the 8:30/10:00 data dust settles and pre-market single-name gaps (memory complex, EFX/BR) resolve.
  • VIX regime: LOW, 14.93 (<18; prior close 14.25, +0.68). Structurally intact uptrend — SPY and QQQ both hold well above SMA20. LOW VIX is SURGE's weakest backtest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 in VIX 20–30) — a structural headwind, not a skip. For ECHO, the LOW-VIX sub-ATR tape is the class where the vol_ratio gate blocks wide (0.79–1.04 vs 1.2 floor across the last stretch) — no exhaustible program forms to fade.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 776.30, prior range 775.44–778.78, SMA20 756.15, ATR(14) 7.95. QQQ prior close 731.04, prior range 728.34–734.39, SMA20 704.06, ATR(14) 12.92. XLE: Brent ~$88, +5% week on the US-Iran Hormuz/ceasefire-expiry driver — two-sided and headline-reactive, decision point today. XBI: two FDA PDUFA decisions today (BMY iberdomide, MRK Keytruda+Padcev), decisions still pending at pre-open.
  • Macro backdrop: A record-to-flat, near-record base where the consumer leg is the live friction (Friday's soft Retail Sales capped the record) and oil/Hormuz is the live geopolitical tail; the memory/semis rebound and EFX/BR earnings gaps are the single-name textures. Two-sided rather than a clean trending leg.

Desk-level read: Today is the structurally-hostile class for both Family 2 expressions. SURGE faces a LOW-VIX sub-ATR tape (weakest cohort, no impulse) plus a persistent pullback_resumption block (N=5) — trend-qualified first moves keep failing to retrace — plus a light mid-window print (NAHB 10:00) at its entry-window open. ECHO faces a quiet two-sided day where the only live candidates are the high-risk side of its own thesis (an XLE fade into a strengthening/headline oil driver — the 8/10 loss template) or a contingent XBI FDA leg. The memory complex fails ECHO's intrinsic-catalyst test. Base case for the desk: both stacks stand down, consistent with the well-calibrated stand-down side of both books. Neither member's mechanism is incompatible with today — they are simply unlikely to get a qualifying setup.

ECHO — close-leg exhaustion (dynamic universe: SPY/XLE/XBI + Scanner candidates)

Setup present: possible, not likely — low conviction. Not a skip day (Empire State/NAHB are not in my skip set), and the Scanner lists intrinsic-catalyst candidates, but the shape is a quiet two-sided LOW-VIX tape where my vol_ratio gate has blocked wide all recent stretch. Candidates through my v7 eligibility screen:

  • XBI — LONG only contingent on an FDA approval (2 PDUFA dates today: BMY, MRK). This is the one genuinely intrinsic sector-level catalyst today. Decisions are still pending at pre-open and can drop any time on the target date. If a decision confirms (esp. BMY), XBI can establish a clean one-way program on a sector-level FDA leg independent of the EIA cycle. But XBI is my weakest backtested leg (TEMPER monitoring: below-50% WR over 15+ live XBI trades → exclusion review), and FDA-approval days can be chaotic rather than exhaustible. A confirmation + a clean one-way first-half-hour + all four gates clearing at 15:20 is the only path to an XBI short (the contra to a long FDA-momentum morning). A rejection that knocks XBI's first-half-hour ≤ −5% flips it to my chaotic-catalyst flag (not a fade). Contingent and low-probability.
  • XLE — two-sided (headline-driven), NOT a fade leg. The ceasefire expires today; Brent ~$88 after a +5% week. This is exactly the driver-strengthening class that cost me on 8/10 (I faded XLE into a live, strengthening oil driver and was stopped at 15:40) and that I stood down from cleanly on 8/14 (signal +1.26%, vol_ratio 1.042 — the closest since the stop-out; correct stand-down). I am NOT reaching for an XLE fade on an escalation/decision day. It qualifies only if oil de-escalates intraday (a reopening/de-escalation headline) AND a clean one-way XLE program with all four gates clearing forms — otherwise XLE is a stand-down leg.
  • SPY — intrinsic catalyst = Empire State macro leg (default candidate). Eligible (index-level macro catalyst), but it is my weakest backtested leg and a second-tier-data day rarely establishes a clean one-way program that survives to 15:20 — more likely a two-sided drift. Possible, not likely.
  • Memory complex (SNDK/STX/MU/WDC) — sector momentum rebound, NOT intrinsic per-name news. Fails the intrinsic-catalyst test → momentum texture, not a clean ECHO program. The program runs in the names, not an index ETF — non-qualifying, same as the constituent-level semis divergence calls.

Sizing vs. event risk: MEDIUM event risk, not a skip. Standard sizing (0.75%/instrument, 2.0% session budget) applies if a clean program qualifies — no reduction. The discipline is in selection: do not fade XLE on a strengthening/decision-day oil driver, do not chase the memory-complex single-name momentum, do not pre-assign polarity to XLE.

Key levels: SPY prior close 776.30, prior range 775.44–778.78. XBI session VWAP and first-half-hour signal measured at 10:00; all four gates (|signal_return| ≥ 0.25%, VWAP persistence, ADX ≥ 20, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80) at 15:20. Watch for the FDA decision drop intraday (BMY/MRK) — it defines whether XBI is even a candidate.

Invalidation / stand-down: No clean one-way program on an intrinsic-catalyst leg by 15:20 = no trade (base case on a quiet two-sided day). Explicitly stand down from any XLE fade while the oil driver is live/strengthening or headline-decision unresolved (the 8/10 high-risk side), from any memory-complex single-name fade (constituent-level, non-qualifying), and from any XBI fade absent a confirmed approval + clean one-way program (a rejection with ≤ −5% first-half-hour is the chaotic-catalyst flag, not a fade). A clean one-way XBI program on a confirmed approval (short), an SPY re-rating on the Empire State leg, or an XLE fade only if oil de-escalates intraday, with all four gates clear, is the only path to a trade — and even then, respect the 1.5× ATR stop immediately (stop-out watch N=2, both at 15:40 into pushing tape; do not give a live driver ten minutes).

SURGE — VWAP pullback continuation (SPY/QQQ only)

Setup present: unlikely — low conviction. Not a skip day (Empire State/NAHB are not in my skip set), but today is the structurally-hostile class, compounded by a light mid-window print at the entry-window open:

  1. LOW VIX (14.93) — my weakest backtest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 in VIX 20–30). Structural headwind, not a skip.
  2. Sub-ATR two-sided tape — the modal no-impulse class. The briefing calls for a quiet tape; my first-hour signal (9:30–10:00) is likely sub-floor (recent quiet days blocked 0.10–0.25pp below the ±0.30% floor — wide margin, no impulse exists). An Empire State (8:30) data-open further conditions the first hour toward price-discovery.
  3. Pullback block persists (N=5: 7/15, 7/28, 8/3, 8/4, 8/13). I am getting trend-qualified signals, but the measured VWAP-touch retracement + resumption keeps failing to complete — on 8/13 both SPY (+0.74%, ADX 39.9) and QQQ (+1.04%, ADX 29.9) were trend-qualified yet neither retraced. A resumption bar is a precondition, not an adjustable threshold; structural absence, not calibration.
  4. NAHB at 10:00 ET is a LOW-MEDIUM mid-window print landing exactly at my entry-window open. Lower impact than a macro print (housing sentiment), so I am not locking out a pre-print window the way the 8/14 Michigan handling did — but structure formation is already unlikely on a sub-ATR tape, and if the tape does not establish a clean move by ~10:00, the point is moot before the print matters.

Sizing vs. event risk: MEDIUM event risk, not a skip. Standard sizing (0.75%, $187.50, single position) applies if a genuinely clean, trend-qualified setup forms. The risk control is the no-force discipline: no established move → no three-phase structure → stand down before sizing is relevant. NAHB is LOW-MEDIUM; I will not chase a fragile pre-print pullback, but a clean post-print re-establishment (if the tape turns decisive) remains the only operative sub-window.

Key levels: QQQ prior close 731.04, prior range 728.34–734.39; SPY prior close 776.30, prior range 775.44–778.78. Signal floor at 10:00: |first-hour| ≥ 0.30%, ADX(14) ≥ 22, correct VWAP side + non-flat slope. Pullback + resumption window 10:00–12:00.

Invalidation / stand-down: Stand down entirely — no trade — on both first-hour signals sub-floor, on a price-discovery first hour (Empire State-conditioned open), on a trend-qualified first move that never retraces (the N=5 block), or if the 10:00 NAHB print invalidates a trend-qualified first move without a clean post-print re-establishment. Do not force the three-phase structure onto a tape with no clean established move. Only a genuine trend-qualified day with a measured VWAP-touch retracement and a confirmed resumption bar earns an entry; today's LOW-VIX, sub-ATR, pullback-blocked backdrop is the base case against one forming.
