Briefing reference: /Users/dadbot/Desktop/ClaudeBod/projects/dadbrain/Analysis/briefings/2026-08-14-pm.md PM: ECHO

Shared Market Read

  • Event risk today: MEDIUM — July Retail Sales at 8:30 AM ET (cons +0.1% MoM) and Michigan Consumer Sentiment Prelim at 10:00 AM ET (cons ~54.5). Both are second-tier and tradeable — neither stack is on a pre-registered skip set, firm-wide GO. No Tier-1 within the 2-day window (FOMC Minutes 8/19 is next; Jackson Hole Aug 21–22 after).
  • Session character expected: Trending-up bias, event-conditioned. A data-driven open at 8:30; the briefing is explicit that structure may not form cleanly until the Retail Sales dust settles (~9:00–9:30). Two live legs: (1) a benign Retail Sales print keeps the record-high disinflation drift intact (S&P closed at a record 7,798.99 Thursday on back-to-back soft CPI/PPI); (2) the AMAT sell-the-news gap-down (~-5% premarket despite a beat-and-raise) plus the memory-vs-AI-networking divergence (SNDK/MU strength vs. CSCO/CBRS bleed) inject two-sided single-name/semis tension into the open.
  • VIX regime: LOW, 14.53 (<18). Structurally intact uptrend — SPY and QQQ both hold above SMA20 (SPY 777.84 vs 754.50; QQQ 732.11 vs 702.27). LOW VIX is SURGE's weakest backtest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 in VIX 20–30) — a structural headwind, not a skip. No regime impact for ECHO.
  • Key levels: SPY prior close 777.84, prior range 774.19–779.37, SMA20 754.50, ATR(14) 8.40. QQQ prior close 732.11, prior range 724.07–733.94, SMA20 702.27, ATR(14) 13.64. XLE: Brent ~$88, +5%+ this week on the US-Iran Hormuz/blockade escalation + IEA supply-shortfall warning — a live, strengthening energy driver (not the dormant story it was mis-read as on 8/10).
  • Macro backdrop: Benign-expected Retail Sales releases the record-high drift that back-to-back soft inflation prints built; a hot print (consumer reacceleration) would undercut the disinflation narrative and flip the tape two-sided into the close.

Desk-level read: The 8:30 print is an open-conditioner for both stacks — it feeds the first-hour signal SURGE measures at 10:00 and the morning bias ECHO reads for a 15:30 fade. Michigan at 10:00 ET falls INSIDE SURGE's entry window (10:00–12:00) — a mid-window data release, handled as a two-window session for SURGE (see below). The one live directional driver (oil/Hormuz → XLE LONG) is exactly the strengthening-driver class that cost ECHO on 8/10 — the fade on the driver's own sector is the high-risk side of ECHO's thesis, and I will not reach for it. Both stacks are on low-probability, low-conviction footing: SURGE faces a data-open + mid-window print + LOW VIX + a persistent pullback block; ECHO faces a two-sided-conditioned day whose only clean candidate is the leg my own lesson says to stand down from.

ECHO — close-leg exhaustion (dynamic universe: SPY/XLE/XBI + Scanner candidates)

Setup present: possible, not likely — low conviction. Not a skip day (Retail Sales is not in my skip set), and the Scanner lists intrinsic-catalyst candidates, but today's shape has the same trap as 8/10 wrapped in a benign-macro wrapper. Candidates through my v7 eligibility screen:

  • XLE — LONG (oil/Hormuz). This is the mirror of my 8/10 stop-out. On 8/10 the plan triaged XLE as "catalyst dormant" while oil was live and strengthening (+1.5% → ~+5% intraday), XLE ran a +2.77% first-half-hour, cleared my entire gate stack, and my fade short was stopped ten minutes in as the energy bid carried into the close. Today the watchlist explicitly flags XLE LONG on the Hormuz/blockade escalation (Brent ~$88, +5% week, IEA widest supply shortfall in five years). My 8/10 lesson is load-bearing here: the close-leg fade on the driver's own strengthening sector is the high-risk side of the thesis. I am NOT reaching for an XLE fade on an escalation day. It qualifies only if the oil driver itself fades intraday (a de-escalation headline) AND a clean one-way XLE program with all four gates clearing forms — otherwise XLE is a stand-down leg for me today.
  • SPY — intrinsic catalyst = Retail Sales macro leg. Eligible (index-level macro catalyst). But a data-pivot day rarely establishes a clean one-way program that survives to 15:20 — a benign print is more likely a two-sided drift than an exhaustible program — and SPY is my weakest backtested leg (below-benchmark routing). Possible, not likely.
  • AMAT — DOWN (sell-the-news), single-stock. Per my single-stock earnings lesson (INTC-type gap reversals complete in the first 90 minutes, not through the close), a single-stock gap reversal does not concentrate exhaustion at 15:30. Non-qualifying for the close leg — same reason I do not fade the constituent-level semis divergence (SNDK/MU, CSCO/CBRS): the program runs in the names, not an index ETF.
  • XBI — no catalyst today (no FDA decision confirmed). Not a candidate.

Sizing vs. event risk: MEDIUM event risk, not a skip. Standard sizing (0.75%/instrument, 2.0% session budget) applies if a clean program qualifies — no reduction for the data day. The discipline is in selection: do not fade XLE on a strengthening driver, do not chase the AMAT/semis single-stock gap.

Key levels: SPY prior close 777.84, prior range 774.19–779.37. XLE session VWAP and first-half-hour signal measured at 10:00; all four gates (|signal_return| ≥ 0.25%, VWAP persistence, ADX ≥ 20, vol_ratio ≥ 1.2, exhaustion_score ≥ 0.80) at 15:20.

Invalidation / stand-down: No clean one-way program on an intrinsic-catalyst leg by 15:20 = no trade (base case on a two-sided-conditioned day). Explicitly stand down from any XLE fade while the oil driver is strengthening (the 8/10 high-risk side), and from any AMAT/semis single-stock fade (constituent-level, non-qualifying). A clean one-way SPY re-rating on the Retail Sales leg, or an XLE fade only if oil de-escalates intraday, with all four gates clear, is the only path to a trade — and even then, respect the 1.5× ATR stop immediately (stop-out watch N=2, both at 15:40 into pushing tape; do not give a live driver ten minutes).

SURGE — VWAP pullback continuation (SPY/QQQ only)

Setup present: unlikely — low conviction. Not a skip day (Retail Sales/Michigan are not in my skip set), but today is the structurally-hostile class, compounded by a mid-window data release:

  1. Catalyst-gap first hour (Retail Sales at 8:30). The print lands 30 min into the first-hour window, so the first-hour signal (measured 9:30–10:00) is on a data-driven-open session. My live record is 0/2 on catalyst-gap sessions; TEMPER's SURGE retrospective is explicit that first-hour price action there is a price-discovery process, not a trend establishment — the three-phase structure is fundamentally invalid. The briefing itself says structure may not form cleanly until ~9:00–9:30, eating most of my signal window.
  2. Michigan at 10:00 ET is a mid-window data release — handle as a TWO-WINDOW session. The print lands exactly on the pullback/resumption boundary of my three-phase mechanism. Window A (pre-Michigan): a trend-qualified first move measured at 10:00 is fragile — the 10:00 print can invalidate it just as the pullback begins. Do not take a pre-Michigan entry. Window B (post-Michigan, ~10:15–11:00): the only window where a clean structure can re-form and complete after the print settles. If no clean three-phase structure re-establishes post-Michigan, stand down.
  3. LOW VIX (14.53) — my weakest backtest cohort (PF 1.36 vs 2.18 in VIX 20–30). Structural headwind.
  4. Pullback block persists (N=5: 7/15, 7/28, 8/3, 8/4, 8/13). On 8/13 both SPY (+0.74%, ADX 39.9) and QQQ (+1.04%, ADX 29.9) were trend-qualified but no VWAP-touch pullback resumed within the window. So I am getting trend-qualified signals, but the resumption keeps failing; a mid-window print adds a further reason the structure won't complete.

Sizing vs. event risk: MEDIUM event risk, not a skip. Standard sizing (0.75%, $187.50, single position) applies if a genuinely clean, trend-qualified setup forms. The risk control is the no-force discipline + the two-window sequencing: a catalyst-gap first hour triggers no-force before any sizing is relevant (0/2 live on this class), and a pre-Michigan entry is off the table by construction.

Key levels: QQQ prior close 732.11, prior range 724.07–733.94; SPY prior close 777.84, prior range 774.19–779.37. Signal floor at 10:00: |first-hour| ≥ 0.30%, ADX(14) ≥ 22, correct VWAP side + non-flat slope. Pullback + resumption window 10:00–12:00, with post-Michigan (10:15–11:00) the operative sub-window.

Invalidation / stand-down: Stand down entirely — no trade — on a catalyst-gap/price-discovery first hour, on both first-hour signals sub-floor, or if the 10:00 Michigan print invalidates a trend-qualified first move without a clean post-print re-establishment. Do not force the three-phase structure onto a tape with no clean established move, and do not enter pre-Michigan. Only a genuine trend-qualified day with a measured VWAP-touch retracement and a confirmed resumption bar — ideally re-formed in the post-Michigan sub-window — earns an entry; today's data-open, mid-window-print, LOW-VIX, pullback-blocked backdrop is the base case against one forming.

House Echo Desk Reflection — 2026-08-14

Desk: house-echo (Family 2 — Momentum / Trend Continuation) PM: ECHO Period covered: 2026-08-11 → 2026-08-14 — four sessions since the desk's last reflection on 2026-08-10 Trigger: WS5 Friday-cadence (weekly) — today is the desk's scheduled reflection day Members: ECHO (contra-trend, 15:30 ET), SURGE (with-trend, 10:00–12:00 ET)

What Happened

Desk-Level Summary
MemberTrades (period)Net P&L (period)Cumulative P&LSPRT
ECHO0 (four no-trade sessions)$0.00+$28.56 (6 trades, 66.7% WR)CONTINUE (+0.897)
SURGE0 (four no-trade sessions)$0.00+$711.58 (6 trades, 66.7% WR)CONTINUE (+1.425)

Combined desk P&L (period): 0 trades, $0.00. Cumulative desk record: 12 trades, 8 W / 4 L, +$740.14 — unchanged, nothing traded.

The window was four consecutive no-trade sessions across both members, spanning one CPI hard-skip day (8/12) and three LIVE evaluation days (8/11, 8/13, 8/14) that never produced a qualifying setup. The market context was a thin, LOW-VIX, sub-ATR stretch — VIX ranged 14.25–15.59, true ranges ran 0.42–0.47× ATR, and the tape was quiet-drift (8/11), news-driven two-sided (8/13), and compressed-fade (8/14). This is exactly the regime both of Family 2's expressions are structurally hostile to, and it produced a clean, well-calibrated stand-down on every session.

The desk plan forecast no-trade (or near-no-trade) for both members on all four sessions, and every forecast was right: Brier 0.000 on the 8/12 skip and 0.0144–0.0625 on the three evaluation days. The stand-down side of the desk remains its best-calibrated side — now six consecutive reflection periods running.

ECHO — Regime Block, and the 8/10 Lesson Holding on Its First Re-Test

No trade on any session. The binding gate across the window is the vol_ratio gate (≥ 1.2) — but it blocked wide, not by grazing:

SessionSPYXLEXBIBinding block
08-11morning_signal +0.08% (floor ±0.25%)vol_ratio 0.794 (signal +0.42%)vol_ratio 0.754 (signal +0.37%)regime — quiet drift, no program
08-12— CPI hard skip (pre-registered, honored)hard skip
08-13vol_ratio 0.810 (signal +0.66%)vol_ratio 0.786 (signal −1.25%)vol_ratio 0.762 (signal −0.34%)regime — vol_ratio ~0.4 below floor on all three
08-14morning_signal +0.07% (floor ±0.25%)vol_ratio 1.042 (signal +1.26%)vol_ratio 0.968 (signal −1.26%)regime + discipline

On a LOW-VIX, sub-ATR tape (realized volume compressed hard, true range 0.42–0.47× ATR), realized volume never reaches 1.2× the 20-session average — no exhaustible institutional program forms, so the close-leg fade has nothing to fade. The blocks on 08-11 and 08-13 were 0.39–0.45 below the 1.2 floor — wide-margin regime, the same class the 8/10 reflection already classified. No gate misbehaved; no threshold is being repeatedly grazed.

The one session worth close attention is 08-14: XLE produced the strongest non-graze setup since the 8/10 stop-out — a +1.26% morning signal and vol_ratio 1.042, the closest the gate has come to the 1.2 floor since the 8/10 trade (1.2401) — and it was still 0.158 below floor and it was the exact leg the desk had pre-committed to stand down from. The 8/10 lesson ("the close-leg fade on the driver's own strengthening sector is the high-risk side of the thesis") was load-bearing and held on its first re-test: on a day when oil/Hormuz was a live, strengthening driver (Brent ~$88, +5% week), the desk did not reach for an XLE fade — no trade, cleanly. This is the lesson working as intended, not a new finding. Even had vol_ratio cleared, the disciplined read says the fade on a strengthening driver's own sector is the loss template, not a setup.

The binding gate, answered: regime, not calibration. The setup genuinely never formed on a leg the desk would legitimately fade. The vol_ratio gate is doing exactly what it was cleared to do — filtering out low-participation sessions. No repeated grazing, no TEMPER conversation warranted on any gate. The 8/10 lesson's execution is the single most important positive event of the window.

SURGE — Regime (Session Character) Block, and the Pullback Block Reaches N=5

No trade on any session. Two distinct no-trade classes, both structural:

  1. Wide-margin first-hour-signal blocks on the quiet-drift days — the modal no-trade class: - 08-11: SPY +0.11% / QQQ +0.05% vs ±0.30% floor (0.19 / 0.25pp below). - 08-14: SPY +0.09% / QQQ +0.20% vs ±0.30% floor (0.21 / 0.10pp below). Decided by 10:01. The Michigan 10:00 mid-window print never became operational — both first-hour signals were sub-floor, so the two-window sequencing (Window A pre-Michigan / Window B post-Michigan) never opened an entry. The QQQ +0.20% was the closest of the two but still sub-floor by 0.10pp — a wide-ish margin, not a graze.
  2. The pullback_resumption block — now N=5 trend-qualified sessions (7/15, 7/28, 8/3, 8/4, 8/13). On 08-13 this was the cleanest instance yet: both SPY and QQQ were trend-qualified simultaneously (SPY +0.74% / ADX 39.9; QQQ +1.04% / ADX 29.9) yet neither produced a VWAP-touch retracement within the window. A one-way post-CPI rally day denied the measured pullback on both legs at once. The resumption bar is a structural precondition of the three-phase mechanism — a trend-qualified first move that never retraces is not a setup that is being rejected by a threshold, it is a setup that structurally never completes. Not a graze; no calibration evidence.

The binding gate, answered: regime (session character), not calibration. On the quiet-drift days the impulse is absent (sub-floor by wide margins); on the trend-qualified days the retracement is denied (one-way/gap-and-go character). Both are the mechanism's structural absence, not a parameter being grazed. The LOW-VIX cohort (VIX 14.25–15.59 all window) is SURGE's weakest backtested cohort and continued to behave as such. The pre-committed TEMPER conversation on the ADX band / session-character filter remains the deliverable — this window's N=5 pullback block and the 08-13 both-legs-trend-qualified instance strengthen the session-character (regime) reading, and argue against any threshold action. No fix needed; wait.

Reading: Perfect stand-down record across all four sessions — both members forecast no-trade (or the 8/12 pre-registered skip) correctly on every single day. Sum Brier: echo 0.1574/4, surge 0.0513/4. The stand-down side of the desk is the well-calibrated side (now six consecutive reflection periods). The one directional nuance — ECHO forecast short on 08-14 (the XLE fade it then correctly stood down from) and long on 08-11 — was never scored because neither leg traded, which is itself the point: the forecast carried the low-p_trade, and the discipline held. No calibration problem this window; the no-trade calls were right.

Learnings Flags (Desk Level)
  • [x] Flag for learnings.md: SURGE pullback_resumption block reaches N=5 trend-qualified sessions (7/15, 7/28, 8/3, 8/4, 8/13); on 8/13 both SPY and QQQ were trend-qualified simultaneously yet neither retraced — a one-way post-CPI rally denied the measured pullback on both legs at once. A trend-qualified first move that never retraces is structural absence, not a threshold graze. Strengthens the session-character (regime) reading behind the pre-committed TEMPER conversation on the ADX band / session-character filter; argues against any threshold action.
  • [x] Flag for learnings.md: ECHO 8/10 lesson held on its first re-test (8/14) — XLE posted the strongest non-graze setup since the stop-out (signal +1.26%, vol_ratio 1.042) on a strengthening oil/Hormuz driver, and the desk stood down from the XLE fade per the pre-committed rule. Confirms the driver-sector-fade lesson is executable discipline, not a written note.
  • [x] Flag for learnings.md (desk-level): a 4-session LOW-VIX sub-ATR stretch (VIX 14.25–15.59, true range 0.42–0.47× ATR) produced no qualifying setup for either Family 2 expression — ECHO's vol_ratio gate blocked wide (no program), SURGE either got sub-floor signals or a denied retracement. Both forecast no-trade correctly on all four sessions. Regime, not calibration; the stand-down side remains the well-calibrated side.

Paper P&L

Period net (desk): $0.00 — no trades from either member.

Running paper P&L (cumulative): +$740.14 (12 trades, 8 W / 4 L)

  • ECHO: +$28.56 (6 trades, 66.7% WR)
  • SURGE: +$711.58 (6 trades, 66.7% WR)

Event Risk vs. Expectation

The window's event-risk calls were all correctly handled. 08-12 (CPI): HIGH as rated — and the hard skip for both members was honored (no phantom trade, clean no_trade logs, Brier 0.0). The benign CPI resolution (headline +0.1%/+3.4%, core +0.2%/+2.5%) was exactly the backdrop both members' mechanisms dislike — the skip was a scored, correct stand-down, not a missed opportunity. 08-13 (PPI + claims): MEDIUM as rated, two-sided data/AI-gap day, no qualifying program — as forecast. 08-14 (Retail Sales −0.6%, Michigan 51.0): MEDIUM as rated; both prints were soft, the index slipped ~0.2% sub-ATR off the record, and the tape never formed a clean one-way program for either member. The EOD's "consumer-weakness cap" read validated the desk's stand-down — neither a fadeable exhausted program (ECHO) nor a clean established trend + pullback (SURGE) formed on a compressed consumer-caution fade. VIX closed 14.25 — LOW regime, unchanged. No event risk was mis-rated, and no hard-skip condition was violated.
